  1. My boys (ages 20 and 17) just took the Motorcycle Safety Course this weekend. So now that they passed, it will be time to look for bikes. My oldest wants my RSTD thats been sitting in the garage. I think he would be able to handle it, hes a big kid (6' 3" and 190 pounds) and really level headed. But still it would make me nervous. My other son isnt as big, only about 5' 9" and 130 pounds. So I am going to have to find something to fit him. Maybe in the 500 to 650 range. Let the fun begin in the hunt for the right bike! I'm really looking forward to some rides with my boys!!!!
  2. After having to go back to the eye surgeon and having to deal with a detached retina, instead of seeing some improvement, it has got worse. I called the Dr's office yesterday and they told me to come in immediately. It has now been determined that my loss of sight in my right eye is due to a lack of adequate blood flow. Unfortunately, this is not fixable. And, this goes back to being type 2 diabetic for 30 years and not always doing a good job keeping it in good control. After my marriage separation and divorce and losing about 50 pounds, I was able to get my diabetes in such good control that I had my A1C in the 6.4 range, which is very good, and that was after going off insulin. After my last A1C creeping back up to 8.3, I have now gone back on insulin. I have gained a few pounds back, but with this eye problem, loosing my job and dealing with some depression, I have not been getting the exercise I was getting. Now, my primary concern is to try to keep the other eye healthy. RandyA
  3. Some of you might appreciate this. Machinist's Workshop magazine tested penetrants for break out torque on rusted nuts. This was specifically addressed to rusted, other material results may vary The results are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist, Bud Baker. They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment. Penetrating oil ..... Average load None ...................... 516 pounds WD-40 ................... 238 pounds PB Blaster ............... 214 pounds Liquid Wrench ......... 127 pounds Kano Kroil .............. 106 pounds ATF-Acetone mix.......53 pounds The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price. Somtimes grandpa's solution still holds water...
  4. Hey all, its been awhile since I last posted, probably since the last Meet and Eat in Rome with Eck and Blackjack. Lifes beens nuts here, but anyways, I am pretty sure I have blown my rear shock. I have noticed oil under it and it seems my ride has deteriated to the point that I bottom out on most any bump and sometimes the bike feels a little squirrley in a curve, kinda like a cocker spaniel wagging its tail! lol anyways, I found an OEM for about 550 but I really wanna make sure that I ain't replacing it for nuthin! I have heard that I should not bottom out the shock and I know we've been packing a few more pounds, but it does bottom out a lot,and it seems to float a bit? I plan on a rear tire as well if I can find a venom on sale, hoping to hit the Keys in a few weeks so I have my hands full! Hope all is well with all and we'll meet up again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  5. The U. S. S... Constitution (Old Ironsides), as a combat vessel, carried 48,600 gallons of fresh water for her crew of 475 officers and men. This was sufficient to last six months of sustained operations at sea. She carried no evaporators (i.e. fresh water distillers). However, let it be noted that according to her ship's log, "On July 27, 1798, the U.S.S. Constitution sailed from Boston with a full complement of 475 officers and men, 48,600 gallons of fresh water, 7,400 cannon shot, 11,600 pounds of black powder and 79,400 gallons of rum." Her mission: "To destroy and harass English shipping." Making Jamaica on 6 October, she took on 826 pounds of flour and 68,300 gallons of rum. Then she headed for the Azores , arriving there 12 November.. She provisioned with 550 pounds of beef and 64,300 gallons of Portuguese wine. On 18 November, she set sail for England . In the ensuing days she defeated five British men-of-war and captured and scuttled 12 English merchant ships, salvaging only the rum aboard each. By 26 January, her powder and shot were exhausted. Nevertheless, although unarmed she made a night raid up the Firth of Clyde in Scotland . Her landing party captured a whisky distillery and transferred 40,000 gallons of single malt Scotch aboard by dawn. Then she headed home. The U. S. S. Constitution arrived in Boston on 20 February 1799, with no cannon shot, no food, no powder, no rum, no wine, no whisky, and 38,600 gallons of water. GO NAVY! ****************************
  6. How do you guard your scooter from theft? This is my main method. Nearly three hundred pounds and no sense of humor. http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w337/Owen064/IMG_0410s.jpg http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w337/Owen064/IMG_0399s.jpg
  7. Well you knew it was coming. The only battery talked about anymore, Lithium ion (hybrid car's, cell phones, etc.) has come to motorcycle's. For those who spend more on batteries this might be your answer. SHORAI brand Lithium ion motorcycle battery. Spec's, has two to four times service life of regular batt., hold's charge for one year without maintenance, and weight's about 1.5 pounds vs about 9.5 pound's regular batt. Interestingly it comes in military spec carbon fiber case. Cost about $130.00 If you don't like the battery you may like the ladies on the sight.SHORAI.com
  8. Looking at the max. load ratings on some of these tires and I'm wondering, on these bikes, what the weight distribution is? Say these 1st gens weigh about 800 pounds, then add 70 pounds for a tank of gas, oil & filter, plus another 250 pounds for the rider, clothing, leathers, boots, gloves, helmet, keys, pocket knife etc..., that's roughly 1120 pounds. How much of that weight load rides on the front tire and how much on the rear ? Is it about the same for the RSV's ?
  9. Went for a ride with some friends up to Geneva on the Lake over the weekend. My one buddy couldn't go (working) but his wife asked to join us. She wanted to ride the Harley 1200 Sportster (Nightster?) that she recently bought. A great time was had by all, and on the way home, I happened to be in the lead, with her next in line, just pulling away from a stop sign with a straigt_away ahead when I hear her stomp on it. I'm pretty quick on the draw, and did the same thing. I don't suppose I have to tell anyone here how it turned out, but it gave me a great feeling putting that Harley in it's place. She, alone, 120 pounds soakin' wet,.... me, with the wife on the back, 350 pounds between us, plus all three compartments loaded with a duffel strapped to the back. Well, lets just say we ran it up to about 85 before letting off, (wife yelling at me the whole time) and the Harley was further behind than when we started, buddies wife looking astonished. Next stop she said "that thing's a beast". (87 Standard) I believe she's correct. I love it.
  10. i happened to stop at my kawasaki dealer yesterday to look at the new victories again. when i was leaving , there happened to be a new kaw jet ski by the front door. i asked my salesman what size motor it had, just out of curiosty. he said 260 horsepower supercharged 1500 cc with 1500 pounds of thrust. blew my mind. any one ever ride one of these things? it must be awesome. where does it end?
  11. since i have lost 235 pounds ( i think 175 pounds were muscle) i am having trouble handling my venture.. it seem to have gained 400 pounds.. so i have decided to build a trike kit similar to the voyager trike kit.. being as money is the issue.. so i called my insurance man, and got the ok from him, that it is ok... so i have started my prototype.. so far this is where i am at.. if anyone with avoyager kit could send me pictures of how it hooks up to the rear of the bike, and the setup on the voyager frame that would help..
  12. The manual states the maximum weight you can place on an 09 RSV is 418 pounds, including rider, passenger, gear (helmets, etc.) and luggage. Thats not a whole lot. Is this max weight more to do with tire wear and emissions than what the bike frame can safely support? From some of the pics and posts in here, people are loading WAY over 418lbs of trailers, accesories, rider, etc. Heck, I'm 280 of the 418 pounds!
  13. I check the Tires every time I wash the bike or fill the tank. I have been airing up to 37 pounds, the sidewalls say 40 pounds cold MAX. I'm one that enjoys a stiffer ride. Yes feeling every stone is a good thing Am I causing excessive wear to my tires? Am I airing it up too much? Should or can I go to the 40 pounds MAX that the tire says?
  14. the first week I lost 44 pounds , after my stomach surgery..(mostly water, but it works for me). down to 355 pounds now.. how far can i go? but it will slow down from here out.. still cant tell it tho.
  15. I was looking at the specs for these two bikes and it struck me very odd that the RSV was only about 20 pounds heavier, does that sound right? It also appears that a different frame is used between the two, is that correct also?
  16. Hi everyone, I have a 2006 RSTD and have read several posts (and Freebird's excellent detailed step-by-step picture show - Thanks!) regarding 17.5 pilots and going up one size on all main jets. I have a question about altitude. I am at 3500 feet in Calgary, AB and often travel the Rockies at 6000 ft plus... I have K&Ns, BUB slipons and the Dyna ignition module. Has anyone with similar equipment run for long periods at 3500 - 6000 feet? If so, how did the richer mixture work out? I'm for anything that adds smooth and more HPs but don't want to go the wrong direction and end up too rich.... Oh and I pull an Aspen Classic which is large as trailers go - probably 500 pounds loaded
  17. today, jeannie ate her first solid food, in almost three weeks! all four of her doctors, told her she is definitely a "diabetic", with no diabetic tendencies. she has lost 42 pounds! about half of which, was fluid. down to a lean ,mean, 151 pounds! lol her lymphoma, appears to be "only in the bone marrow", and easily treated, with a high success rate! Dammn, i'm happy! i should have planned on going back to work a week ago! thank you all again, and again, for all the prayers, good thoughts, and most of all , the pm's ,phone calls, and moral support! just jt

  19. Has and/or will a reverse gear help you decide on your next purchase of a touring bike? This is for men and women owners of RSTD or Venture. My wife is also a driver and has suggested that reverse would be a nice consideration for her when we're talking about 800 give or take pounds. Only the Goldwing and BMW have reverse as far as we know. Will Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, HD, and others join in and add reverse or is reverse not an issue to you owners of the big rigs?
  20. The April/May edition of Machinist's Workshop did a test of penetrating oils where they measured the force required to loosen rusty test devices. Buy the issue if you want to see how they did the test. The results reported were interesting. The lower the number of pounds the better. Penetrating oil .. Average load .. Price per fluid ounce None ................. 516 pounds .. WD-40 .............. 238 pounds .. $0.25 PB Blaster ......... 214 pounds .. $0.35 Liquid Wrench ... 127 pounds .. $0.21 Kano Kroil ......... 106 pounds .. $0.75 ATF-Acetone mix.. 53 pounds .. $0.10 The ATF-Acetone mix was a 50/50 mix (1 to 1 ratio).
  21. Yamaha has just produced this 350hp Goliath. Weigh's 'only' 800+ pounds..
