  1. I have just completed the test ride after the installation of my aux. fuel tank. All went perfect. Not a problem in sight...or hidden. Of course, I have done this a time or two before, as I have installed aux. fuel tanks on 11 previous bikes, so I kind of have experience doing this. However...this was my first time on a RSTD, so there is always something new...or things to learn. We all know about the stock tank...nothing new there. And if the bike is ridden at a steady and quick pace, it can consume fuel a little faster than I want to have to stop. Therefore...add aux. fuel. The tank I bought is the 5 gallon tank from Tour Tanks. Here is the link to their site: http://www.tourtank.com/TourTanks.html I am 100 % happy with the product, and the additional hardware kit that needs to be bought along with the tank. Everyhting is top notch, no junk here. As you can see by the pictures, I ride a solo bike. In place of the rear seat is a leather rear fender bib, and on top of that is the Yamaha rear fender rack (in place of the rear seat. On top of that rack...I mount a 10" x 18" aluminum rack I got from Aerostich. Then I mounted the Saddlemen bag onto that aluminum rack. All of the leather(fake leather) bag and aluminum rack are through bolted to the yamaha rear fender rack, with 3/8" u-bolts (4 of them) so it is very solid. Then the Tour Tank slides down into the Saddlemen bag...with an extremely snug/tight fit. There is no way that fuel tank is coming out of that Saddlemen bag unless three of us tug with all of our might. The vent hose up next to the filler cap is routed up over the top and far edge of the tank, then down to one of the side pockets of the Saddlemen bag, where I have hidden a catch tank, with secondary vent to the outside of the catch tank. The red petcock on the left side of the solo seat, attached to the yamaha chrome seat rail, works perfectly. I routed the fuel hose to a brass T-fitting that is spliced into the OEM fuel line about 4 inches above where the fuel filter is. The tank I chose from Tour Tank is tank design # 2, meaning it has two exit bungs at the bottom of the tank, one at either end of the bottom of the tank, so that all fuel is drained from the tank, despite cornering. I filled the tank with 2 gallons, filled my regular fuel tank up all the way, then went for a ride. I started out using only the aux. fuel tank, with the main tank turned off at the OEM petcock. The fuel from the aux. tank flowed perfectly, and after 82.7 miles I had used up the two gallongs I put in the aux. fuel tank, and had to switch fuel petcocks on the fly. Simply turned off the aux. fuel tank, and turned on the main fuel petcock, and after a moments hesitation, fuel was flowing again, and zoom... This additional 5 gallon fuel tank "could" give me a total capacity of 10.3 gallons, however I will not fill the aux. fuel tank up all the way, so the max I will put in it is 4 gallons...just to be safe. Even with that additional 4 gallons, I now have a very useable 8.5 gallons, without any concerns for running low. With that capacity, I can run...at speed...for 350 to 400 miles. That is what I am used to, and this will now satisfy my need to go as far as I want to.   2. Talked with Hannigan Motor Sports this morning about the auxiliary fuel tank they will be offering for their trike conversion kit. It is still in R&D and no date is available as to when it will be available. The tank will be 5 gallons. It will be placed under the passenger seat and a filler nozzle nearby with key The unit will not be a gravity fed unit and will have a pump and switch. The price with be just under 700.00 and does not include installation.
  3. I found a cardboard box full of ammo laying in the back of the closet that I don't even remember buying, it had been so long ago. While poking thru all the different calibers I ran across this Mobile Oil gas receipt dated 11/6/65 where the customer bought 11.4 gallons of fuel for the grand total of $3.40. Works out to around .29/gal. We've come a long way baby!!!

Hi folks, we just got back from another road trip and on the second day out, found ourselves in one of those cliff hanger rides on the back roads, where your GPS says there is a gas station, but it's no longer there and the 'next' one is erhm beyond your range.. Tempting fate we continued on with few options on this long stretch of back roads.. By the time we got to a gas station, we were on fumes.. The F counter showed 23.7 Miles, and we pumped in 4.8 Gallons of fuel into the empty tanks.. that means we had what, .2 gallons left sloshing around? I had always been curious to know just how far I could go on reserve, and I just found out.. At least now I know.. To be honest, it actually gave me more confidence to ride the tank lower than I normally would... What if we had run out of fuel? Well the emergency plan was that since my bike burns slightly more fuel than my buddy, we would have pulled the hose off at the petcock and drained what ever I had left into an empty drink container and put that fuel into my buddy's bike and see how far he could go on it.. prolly a few more miles further and closer to a gas station etc.. and he would come back with some fuel to get me there as well.. (contingency plans abound....) What's the lowest you got your tank down to? T
  5. About a month ago I was on my way home from work. With about 25 miles to go my fuel light came on. The gage still showed 3 bars. Well 10 mile later she runs out. I have to stop, lean the bike over, turn on the key till the pump stops. Drive for a few miles and do it again. I stopped 3 time before I made it to a gas station. I filled her up as far as I could and it only took 4.6 gallons. The same thing happend last night and when I made it to the gas station I could only get 4.5 gallons in and that gage still had two bars. Has anyone else had this problem. Where is the other 1.5 gallons?
  6. I've done about all I can do to my carbs over the last couple of years and have done alright with fuel mileage. Usually pull between 36 and 40 mpg in town a running in traffic. I'm not all that gentle on the throttle most the time. I was happy with that. A good day is 42 to 44. I had a morning off for a change today so I took off and wandered around on the back roads for a while. Did about 300 miles. I've always wondered how far I could push the bike for miles before I ran it dry. I usually lose my last fuel bar about 140 miles and start looking for a pump. So today I filled a gallon gas can and put it in the side tank and figured I would find out. I kept my speed as close to 60 - 65 as I could for most the miles and lost my last bar at about 160 miles on the odo. Kept rolling until I got nervous as the last 45 miles were going to have to be Interstate. Stop and filled it up. 226.4 on the odo. Took 4.73 gallons. That figures to be 47.86 mpg. I got nuttin to complain about. I must have learned something hanging around here. Ok, So I did not get to answer one question I had. I know the tank is 5.3 gallons. I should have had about 1/2 of a gallon left. Any of you know about how much you can actually draw from the tank? Later, Mike

I decided to run with Shell V-Power High Test ($1.43L)($6.50 a Gallon)gas I found that the FJR ran much smoother than my other Brand The Overall average for Gas Mileage was 54.94 mpg with speeds min of 118kph/73,23 mph to a top end of 173kph /107.43 mph and this is a guy who weighs 255 lbs and lots of gear ( IM IMPRESSED) The FJR holds 25 litres or 5,5 gallons of full travelling at 120 kph or 74.54 mph before hitting reserve I used 19.7 litres or 4.33 gallons of Fuel I managed to get 374.2kms or 232.4 miles
  8. The U. S. S... Constitution (Old Ironsides), as a combat vessel, carried 48,600 gallons of fresh water for her crew of 475 officers and men. This was sufficient to last six months of sustained operations at sea. She carried no evaporators (i.e. fresh water distillers). In the ensuing days she defeated five British men-of-war and captured and scuttled 12 English merchant ships,salvaging only the rum aboard each. By 26 January, her powder and shot were exhausted. Nevertheless, although unarmed she made a night raid up the Firth of Clyde in Scotland . Her landing party captured a whisky distillery and transferred 40,000 gallons of single malt Scotch aboard by dawn. Then she headed home. The U. S. S. Constitution arrived in Boston on 20 February 1799, with no cannon shot, no food, no powder, no rum, no wine, no whisky, and 38,600 gallons of water. GO NAVY! ****************************
  9. I recently bought a 1983 Venture 1200. I only get 25-28 miles per gallon. the previous owner sent it to Topeka Powersports for poor fuel mileage. They installed new Diaphragm assemblies. Is this milelage typical? or is something wrong? I have talked to two other venture riders, one on a poker run, and one @ the truck stop, and apparently fuel milelage is low. On the Venture history page, it states the average fuel mileage @ 42.5 mpg, it states the capacity @ 5.3 gallons, the owners manual says 5 quarts. The warning light came on and I put 3.92 gallons in. Trying to decide if another carb overhaul is warranted this winter? Gilbert
  10. OK, LD rally season is upon us. I am reviewing my setup and realize a bigger/better aux fuel cell is needed. The IBA rules allow up to 11.5 gallons to be carried on the bike at any time. With the stock tank of 5.9 gallons, this allows 5.5 gallons extra to be carried. My current aux tank is 3 gallons. I am going to upgrade to a 5 gallon tank (don't want to push it and get disqualified due to tolerances). Also, the 3 gallon tank does not have a vent (although it appears to have a vented cap) or a grounding lug. Both these items are required to run in an IBA sanctioned event (or an event that uses the IBA rules). These features are not required to use this tank to run a SS1k or any of the other 'self documented' IBA rides. Only required for the IBA Rally and related organized rallies. Therefore, the current 3 gallon tank is up for sale. It works great to extend your station to station range 50% (to about 300 miles). It is very easy to plumb this into your current fuel line using a simple brass 'T' available at any auto parts store. The tank has an internal baffle to keep the gas from sloshing about. The pictures show the tank mounted on a board with a check valve. I would like to keep the board and check valve (and hose) since the new tank will be the same style - just bigger and with the vent and grounding lug. I will be glad to provide a pattern for the construction of new mounting board. The mounting bands are included. $125 including shipping CONUS. $100 if no shipping required (would prefer this since I suspect UPS will be kind of squimish about shipping a used gas tank).   11. I don't know how to create a poll, but, I'm curious as to the biggest fill-up you've had. A couple times I've done more than 5.8 gallons,but, today was my biggest: 5.976 Gallons. Talk about running on fumes! Guess you could say I just about maxed out the available gas. And some say you can't get 6 gallons in the tank.
  12. Hi All, I am a new member. Not even sure is I have all the settings correct in my profile as I am new for going into forums also. I bought my 2008 Venture in December and could not wait for the snow to melt to pick it up at the dealer. I put it on the road on March 7th and already have it broken in. This is the best bike I have riden. Traded in a 2005 Goldwing for it. Going down south in a month with a friend of mine and we will be riding the tail of the dragon and the blue ridge parkway. Can't wait. My fuel level warning light comes on with about 2 gallons left. The manual says it should come on with .92 gallons left. The dealer is stumped and is checking with the local Yamaha rep. They think it might be a misprint in the manual, but that doesn't sound right. The warning should'nt come on with 1/3 of the fuel left. I have to turn the fuel cock to reserve or the engine will stop running. Any ideas?
  13. If I am not mistaken, and I may be, my 08 RSV is suppose to hold 5.9 gallons of fuel. I think I read in my manual that when the fuel light comes on, I have about 1 gallon of fuel remaining and I will have to switch to reserve pretty soon after the light somes on. It is true that I have to switch to reserve pretty soon after the light comes on. However, when I fill up, it only holds about 4 gallons. If my tank does hold 5.9 gallons, I should have almost 2 gallons of fuel remaining. My question is do you think my fuel light is coming on a little soon or does the tank hold 5.9 gallons and only 5 gallons is usable fuel? Or do I have 1.9 gallons of reserve fuel? I'm a little confused because I was thinking I only have 1 gallon of reserve fuel.

Been reading about it and was wondering who has tried it on motorcycle or truck tires and if anyone knows if the formula is different for trucks and motorcycles I would rather buy a couple 5 gallons than a bunch of bottles. Everything I've read says it doesn't harm the wheel like the other stuff can someone verify ? or know of something better? Thanks, Scott
  15. can anyone tell me, at what R.P.M., the idle circuit drops off and the main carb circuit takes over? my problem is, if i can't get my engine to idle, then 4 gallons of pure sea foam, isn't going to clean the idle jets, and other idle circuit components. just jt
  16. I purposely let my bike run out of fuel on the regular fuel petcock setting. I wanted to see how much fuel it would take. I filled up and noticed it only took 4.3 gallons arent these supposed to be 5.3 gallons with a 1.06 reserve or am I misreading it and the total capacity is 5.3 which includes the 1 gal res? (Though 6 gallons seems like alot for 1990.)
  17. No, not in my bike. I'm smarter than that. Okay, this is way off the topic of bikes & ridin', but the roads are icy, it's the middle of winter and I'm trying to get caught-up on my "to do" list, and I'm looking for a little advice. Last winter, I pulled-out a really old kerosene heater to see if I could warm up my garage enough to putter around with my bike (okay, I guess this is bike related). This heater hasn't been fired-up in probably twenty years. But, it's still in great shape and operates just fine. So, I went out and bought a few gallons of K1 kerosene and filled up the heater. Well, it actually did work well. However, when it was time to turn the wick down, it would not lower enough to extinguish the flame. That was a challenge. I finally ended up smothering it with a tin-foil cap. Anyway, someone recently suggested that my problem with the wick not lowering was probably because the wick was really old and needed to be replaced. So, I got on-line and ordered a new wick. I have my new wick all ready, to put in the heater, but a new concern has been raised. I read somewhere on-line that Kerosene doesn't store well and the quality degrades after a while. Well, I still have about four gallons of the kerosene which I purchased last winter, plus the remainder of what has been sitting in the heater since filling it last winter. The four gallons has been stored inside the garage in a sealed fuel container and I don't expect that any moisture has been able to get in to either that container or in to the heater. If we were talking about fuel for my bike and I had any question about putting anything questionable in it, I wouldn't. It's just too much potential trouble for the little money I could save by buying a few gallons of gas. But, since the mechanics of the heater are so much different than that of an engine, is it all right to try to use this kerosene I bought last year. Or, has it probably broken down or degraded to where it won't provide acceptable performance? I don't want old fuel to cause me any further problems. But, if I can use one year old kerosene, then I won't have to figure out how to dispose of what I have left - I'll just use it. I will wait to do anything with it until I receive some feedback.   18. I am still very new to the Venture, have under 2000 miles on my '07 but I have a few questions. 1. Does everyones cruise control when set and you let go of the throttle doe sit doees it drop almost 5MPH before coming back up to speed? 2. I bought a set of passing lamps used that came with the spacer but still cannot get the fairing off without almost completely removing the passing lamp bar, any suggestions on that. 3. How many gallons should there be left when the fuel light comes on, I filled up the other day with the fuel light on and still had 1.9 gallons, 2 fuel bars on the gauge and the reserve ODO came up but I was not on reserve. Thanks in advance for you assistance. I love the bike and look to have it for a very long time, or at least til it's payed off, and they release an update to it that is much better.
  19. When I was out testing the charge system today I also had to switch over the RESERVE -- was right at a station -- only took 4.5 gallons though -- so reserve is 1.5? Thnx, DREBBIN
