  1. I cant seem to find the thread I was looking at here. it was on replacing the two piston front calipers on stock RSV with R1 or R6 four piston calipers. I was at the dealer yesterday and looked at the new and R1 & R6 It looks to me that the calipers on the new models will not bolt up. they did not have any used ones in the store so I cant say about the older model years. however I looks like the FJR calipers will bolt up. If the R1 & R6 calipers will bolt on to the RSV, What year calipers do I need to find to bolt on to a 2007 RSV. There seem to be many to choose from on e-bay. If I up grade I want to be sure to get the ones that will bolt up. And I am aware on the difference in master cylinder piston size between the two bikes (R1 and RSV)
  2. Hey guys, My friend BJ Melin just posted the following on the MTA forum, so I thought I would post it here to get some feedback from you all: ""Hey guys I hate the front brakes on the 2nd gen Venture after a long trip my right hand is sore and worn out from gripping the lever so hard. I have bought a set of R6, 4 piston brake calipers and intend to get them installed the next time I have a decent day to work on the bike. I don't have an enclosed garage yet, so I have to wait for good weather. It looks like they will mount differently from the RSV 2 piston calipers. Rick Butler has mounted a pair of 4 piston calipers from the 1st gen on his Venture. Has anyone else tried the R6 calipers and if so how did they work out?" From what I have observed, the 2004 and earlier R6 and 2003 and earlier R1 calipers should be a clean bolt-up. Since many of these bikes seem to find their way to salvage, this might be a good option for someone wanting to get better front brakes on their RSV. Rick
  3. Which set of the R1/R6 brakes is better? The Gold dots or the Blue dots? Which donor bike is better R1, R6, FJR? I have seen some six piston calipers. Will these fit a 1st gen MKII? The Blue dots appear to have different size pistons, the Gold dots appear the same size. Anyone know the piston diameters? Do they make plastic pad covers for these? I didn't see them in the parts fiche. I might put a set of these on while I am in there. Probably need to be able to slow this puppy down once I get it going. 4. Hello Everyone. I just got a Venture 1983 with 30k, but there's a problem. The rear break paddle does not return to it's normal position, it will not reset after presing it down. I took the peddal assambly out and there's nothing wrong there. As you can see in the pic that piston like it's hard to move. Can someone point me in the right direction to solve this issue. THank you in advance.
  5. Got a good set of 6 piston Sumitoma calipers for the VenMax today. Came off a 1997 YZF750R Yamaha. 100mm bolt spacing on mounts will match up to the MKII forks on it. Rotors are right diameter, calipers may need shimmed in slightly when I put the VMax front rim on this winter. They were going to need that with the R1's, about 1/4". Off with the R1's, didn't match well with that blue dot !! Gary
  6. Most everyone will agree, the 4 piston rear caliper is over powerful and can cause premature rear wheel lock up. Has anyone swapped out the 4 piston caliper unit for a one or two piston rear caliper unit ?? If so please let me know what was done, is there a bolt on replacement available from some other Yamaha model ?? Thanks, Mike
  7. One of the interesting discussions that has been on here in the past has been the braking ability of the Ventures and the relative effects of items such as swapping caliper/rotor/master cylinders and the benefits of de-linking the first gens. I came across an article on another site which is linked below discussing the ratios between the master cylinder area and the caliper area and the effects on braking. http://www.vintagebrake.com/mastercylinder.htm I created a chart that shows some of various Yamaha bikes and these related calculations for anyone that is interested. There is a screen picture attached as well as the excel spreadsheet if you want to experiment with various combinations. Bottom of chart also shows calculations for de-linking brakes on a 1st gen. Explanation of the numbers shown: Master Cyl dia: The I.D. of the front or rear master cylinder bore Master Cyl. Area: The area of the I.D. of the master cyl. Piston Dia. A: The I.D Of the 1st piston bore or only piston bore in a 2 piston setup Piston Dia. B: The I.D Of the 2nd piston bore, only shown in a 4 piston setup Piston area A: The area of the piston bore of piston A Piston area B: The area of the piston bore of piston B (if used) Total Caliper Piston area: Total area of the pistons in a caliper assembly Rotor Dia.: O.D. of the brake rotor Ratios are expressed as : Piston area/master cyl area:1 (numbers shown in graph do not have the :1 shown. Didn't know how to do that in excel 2003) If you find any errors in this, let me know & I will correct. Gary http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/ratiospreadsheetpicture3.jpg
  8. I have a '99 RSTD with a 2 year old new factory rear shock. No matter how hard I try, I can't get it adjusted so it won't bottom out when I'm riding 2 up. This is the shock that sits horizontally so if the bike settles down or I'm riding and I go over a bump the piston comes out as opposed to a vertically mounted shock where the piston would go in. There are no markings on it to tell me which way to turn to adjust the preload or how much to turn it. Any suggestions? Thanks
  9. Anyone know of a source for new piston rings for an 83 venture 1200. Doing 2nd gear teardown. Figured with 78000mi and a 90psi cylinder, I'd replace rings as long as the engine is out. Cycle Design had all parts but rings. I see on other sites rings are listed as discontinued.
  10. Restore is going slowly but surely. I'm ready to do the carbs but a dire warning in the service manual says not to separate them! How do you overhaul a carb w/o separating and what the heck does a carb assembly plate look like? I did take off the diaphragm housing on 1 carb and a bunch of parts fell out. The diaphragm was wrinkled but had no holes. Does the diaphragm come as a separate part or an assembly as the parts list shows? It seems to me that the diaphragm should be part of the piston if it is to move the piston. The brass collar that goes inside of the piston was just loose when I took it apart. Any advice on these items would be very much appreciated b4 I get myself in a heap of trouble. Thanks
  11. I am planning on rebuilding my front calipers as I suspect one of my brakes might be dragging. I pulled the calipers out and upon inspection the pistons were as smooth as can be except for the small section that sticks out of the caliper while in the normal position. Running my finger across them I can feel that they are a little rough. Some of it is just dirt and some might be actual damage to the piston itself. My question is: How much pitting is okay in the caliper piston before it ought to be replaced? It appears that any roughness in the piston itself remains outside the caliper when a set of fresh pads are installed therefore I would presume that it is fine to go ahead and not replace these and just polish them as much as possible before reinstalling in the rebuilt caliper. I have included a few pictures of what I am looking at here - I know it is a little hard to tell, but it was pretty much the best I could do. Also, is there anything else I ought to be checking for on these? I did notice more dirt build up on one of the caliper's pistons than the other, which leads me to believe that something is wrong with that particular caliper (ie leaky seal or something like that). Thanks for putting up with my dumb questions...
  12. No 1 was running very badly the last few times I took her out so pulled the air cleaner off and chacked things out. the piston on #3 carb was not moving at all. after I opened things up I found the piston was apart. Should it come apart like this or should it be just one assembly Has this ever happened to anybody else Any ideas on how to glue it back together short of buying a new one
  13. About a month ago, maybe longer I posted hearing noise coming from my '04 RSV. The Yamaha dealer has had my trike for almost 3 weeks now. They have had the Yamaha rep out who thought it was a gas problem without listening to it. When he heard it he told the dealer to tear it down. What they found was the left cylender piston had 4 up and down scratches on it. 2 on each side of the piston. I asked the dealer how this could happen and he has told me that they don't know. This is the best engine that they have. They are now waiting until tuesday when the rep will be back and they decide what they are going to do. The bike has 2 more months left on the warranty. The bike has 32K on it. The dealer has told me that he is trying to get Yamaha to pay for some of the repairs, but I would have to pay for the bearings in the lower unit if I wanted to replace them. He has told me that I might as well since the engine is torn down. He also said that Yamaha is fighting paying labor for having to remove some of my trike kit to get to the engine. Of course my thinking is - - If the engine hadn't gone sour, the trike kit would not have had to be removed. I'm going to try to go back to the dealer and get some pictures of the piston if they let me. If I get them, then I'll post them here. I was talking to a man yesterday on a ride I was on who's son has a Suzuki and the same thing happen to him. He said that it was a lack of oit getting to the piston. I don't know if this is my problem or not. If it is, I would think that Yamaha would have to pick up the whole tab. of course I'm hoping for anything that would benifit me. Any ideas out there? 14. I replaced my rear pads and discovered 2 pistons were stuck. Removed the caliper and removed each piston. Had a little gunk to remove from each piston and now it works great. After i replaced the pads i have noticed that they seem to grab and slip a little. Very noticable especially when using the rear to slow down at high speed. Never had this happen with the old brakes. Dont know if the rotor is bent or the brake pads need to set. Any ideas?
  15. Like most thing mechanical, my change out of the rear brake pads has gone to crap. 3 of the 4 pistons pushed right in, but I have one that I can not get to move. I think I messed up the old pads trying to compress the piston and the new one will not go in. Tips / Advice? I started to torch it and file an insurance claim.
  16. Anyone know where I can get a good rear shock for my '99 Tour Deluxe?. It's the one that's mounted horizontially . it looks like a canister and when the bike settles down,or lowers, the piston comes out of the end of the canister.
  17. I picked up an old 78 Honda CB400 TII Hawk that was in really good condition for a friend of mine that has never ridden before. After I got my VR he went out and got his MC lisence so he could ride too. There is no way I am gonna let a greenhorn ride my VR, so I've been keeping an eye out for a good first bike for him to get used to before getting a real bike. Anyhow, I got this CB400 from a classmate for free. He said it would still start but ran like crap. He had it for a lot of year and could never let it just go to the boneyard. Ya, it would start, but only would run on the 2nd cylinder. I pulled the plugs and the first thing I saw was splitfire plugs:bang head:. First thought was a hole burnt in the piston. Stuck my thumb over the plug hole and started it up. No compression! Got a flashlight out and turned the piston to TDC. The hole is about an inch or so big. I've seen way to many vehicles come into my shop that had some sort of severe problems due to some fancy type of sparkplugs. Now that I've made this short story really long, anybody know where to get old Honda parts at a reasonable price:confused24:?
  18. Ok, weekend's here. I started looking at my scraping noise (on my '84 Venture). Didn't think it was the brakes but when I put the bike on the double stand, the rear wheel was not turning freely. Could not remove the rear pads so I took the caliper off. Now the pads fell out and I have to say that they look almost new (thickness wise). There was a small metal plate covering about 1/2 the piston on the piston side of each pad. The small plate hooks on to the pad. It has an arrow on it. Can I take the plate off ? If not, which direction does the arrow point (front or back)? Is there an adjustment somewhere to take the pressure off because the pads are always in contact with the rotor and prevent the wheel from turning freely. Thanks in advance.
  19. Rear master cylander for '86 up Venture. I am updating my braking system in the front and found out from Rick at Buckeye that the master cylanders are larger for the 4 piston calipers. I have the front master cylander but not a rear one. So if anyone has an extra they want to part with let me know...
  20. Copied from another thread..... Here's my position on shimming Squeeze. If the handle bar masters are going to slip or rotate on the tubing with shims, they would do it without the shim because of improper torqueing. 6mm bolts will give plenty of torque compression to make the masters stationary. The weak point will be the threads in the aluminum body due to over torquing , and that exists, shims or not. I understand what you're talking about in delinking. I hadn't thought about the rear master driving the 2ndGen front caliper. I wonder if it could??? The 2ndGen calipers I have are the 2 piston varity with the floating offside pads. I wonder if it's the right way to go??? Hmmmm.... Got to think about this somemore....
  21. I need the piston and crank set of Yamaha r1..here the price is very expensive and very rare...and i dont have much time to search it..so if u have links or anything please do forward it...
  22. I have an 83 Venture.Should I be able to slide the rear wheel under full braking? I know it only has single piston calepers.I can put as mush pressure as I can on the petal and it stops pretty fast, but it wont slide.

Can anyone tell me what year the 2nd gen brakes were updated to 4 piston calipers?
  24. I think that this has been posted before but I can't find the answer by searching. Question is: does the 1st gen have 4 piston calipers? If I remember correctly Rick Butler made the switch, but I can't find the thread.
