  1. I've only ever broken in ONE new engine in my life...so far. But I came across this article in the Wheels section of a newspaper and found it interesting. It might be wise to keep this in mind when breaking in your NEXT new engine. The sole purpose to the break-in procedure is to seal the piston rings to the cylinder walls. This can only happen with high combustion pressures, and these pressures happen when the engine is forced to accelerate under load. In a perfect world after a new engine is installed in a given vehicle, the vehicle should be driven on a vacant airport runway. The drive should consist of full throttle acceleration from a stop to approximately 60 km/h then brought down to about 15 km/h – with the throttle closed. Followed by another acceleration run to at least 60 km/h, followed by another deceleration to 15 km/h. This accelerate/decelerate process should go on for about 50 kilometres. During the acceleration period, the piston rings are forced squarely against the cylinder walls, which trues them to each respective cylinder. In effect, the rings will conform to the shape of the cylinder. The deceleration period creates a very low pressure in the cylinders (relative to the full power combustion pressures) and in the intake system. This low pressure is exposed to the cylinder valves and the oil that gathers in and around the valve guides. This low pressure (essentially a vacuum), draws this oil past the guides and into the engine cylinders. This helps lubricate the cylinder rings in excess of normal operation. The rings need extra lubrication because of the excess friction created by the break-in process.
  2. Anyone know of a source for new piston rings for an 83 venture 1200. Doing 2nd gear teardown. Figured with 78000mi and a 90psi cylinder, I'd replace rings as long as the engine is out. Cycle Design had all parts but rings. I see on other sites rings are listed as discontinued.
  3. I'm doing an overhaul of my brakes. Cleaning and fitting new seals and pads etc. I split the two halves of the calipers to get into the cylinders and clean them out. So far so good...............then I dropped one of the square "O" rings that seal the fluid tranfer holes from one side to the other and now I can't find it. Yamaha don't even have a part number for these "O" rings and I can't get a replacement part from any auto brake parts supplier here in Australia either. I'd like to replace the lot as mine are probably originals and the bike is an '83 model and they have hardened and have lost their elasticity. Does anyone know where I can get 6 of these ? Thanks in anticipation Jim O'D...............................................
  4. Finally got a decent day to work on the scoot! Mid 60s today and not a cloud in the sky. Ran some errands (only about 40 miles) and then thought might as well install the Ajure halogen passing light bulbs. A side note, got tired of trying to hold the inner mounting rings in place. So being the redneck that I am I enlisted the help of the good ole Yellow 3M!!! Won't see it anyway, but they ain't flopping around in there. Now just waiting on dark to see where they are pointed.
  5. A while back I posted looking for some stock turn signals. After a few members gererously offered up some parts I discovered a box of parts to truck/tractor lights that a previous tenant left in the basement. Between all the different parts I was able to make 2 working lights. They are double sided. I liked the look of white lenses in the front, but used amber colored ones on the rear. When they light up they have an amber center with amber rings. Here are some photos showing the led turn signals that came on the bike, a piece of aluminum I made brackets out of and the finished project. I'll have to modify the lower wind deflectors so those aren't installed yet. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk86/jason1gp/venture/IMG_1831-1.jpg http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk86/jason1gp/venture/lights_02.jpg http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk86/jason1gp/venture/lights_03.jpg http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk86/jason1gp/venture/lights_04.jpg
  6. I have a bad #2 cylinder on my 85 and can not find new pistons and rings. Will Vmax pistons and rings work in the venture motor? Vmax pistons and rings are still available from Yamaha but not the ones for the Venture. I have not asked this question at the local dealer I figured I could get a better answer here.
  7. I have a 1985 that starts and runs great, but it has a miss at idle. Cyclinder #2 has low compression (about 65 psi) I think it is the rings because after I put a little oil in the cylinder the compression went up to 100 psi. I can not find new piston rings anywhere. My question is do I replace the engine or just ride that way. It goes down the higway just fine and gets 38 mpg. I bought it last fall with 45600 miles on the odometer I'm thinking that was 145600 miles? The local salvage yards want $500 to $1000 for an engine. Does anyone here know of a source for rings for these bikes? Thanks in advance for your help, Randy

  9. This should be fun to watch.... See if the Bull organization will 'rescue' them.... http://www.westauction.com/auction/index/id/207 I found this in this mornings paper. Solves the mystery of why and who....... Business decisions haunt former Kings coach Brown Published: Tuesday, May. 5, 2009 - 12:00 am | Page 1C Randy Brown is well aware of the perception, even if it doesn't match reality. That, more than anything, is the most painful part of an already challenging time. "People figure that here's this guy … he's played in the NBA, he just got fired (as a coach), he's broke, and here he is giving up his championship rings," he said recently, frustration clear in his voice. "That hurt me because those (rings) mean a lot to me." Less than two weeks after he was one of four Kings assistant coaches fired with interim coach Kenny Natt, Brown – the former Kings player and role player on the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls teams that won titles in 1996, '97 and '98 – finds himself as the latest poster boy for athletes who mismanage money. When news broke April 28 that West Auction had gained control of Brown's three championship rings as part of his bankruptcy filing, the timing of the story led to a tailor-made story line of the financially failing athlete. It served as a brass-knuckles blow to the man who was part of one of the NBA's most celebrated teams. There's a looming May 19 auction date, a starting price of $19,000 apiece and an uncertain fate for his most cherished hardware. But this situation, Brown wants to make clear, isn't what it seems. "I'm going to be working for another NBA team here in a couple months, and (the recent media coverage) portrayed that I'm broke already and here are my rings (being auctioned)," said Brown, who hopes to find his next NBA coaching job soon. "My family suffered a lot, my wife suffered a lot. It was old news to us and news to everyone else. … I (don't) want to be portrayed as a guy who didn't manage his money well and who is giving up his championship rings for a nice dinner out with his wife." Bankruptcy came even before the Kings hired Brown, a Chicago native who was based in the Windy City before returning to Sacramento. He said the process "started in August of 2007." After a series of failed real estate and restaurant dealings with "some bad people who I thought were my friends," he was in a financial hole too big to dig out of alone. "Some buddies who I'm not even going to call friends anymore, left me in a 20-year lease with 20 properties and just left me with all those deals, so I filed bankruptcy in 2007," Brown said. "I already told my attorney that I'm going to contact the NBA to see if I can talk to the young players in this league about signing their name to some business situations that turn out to be no good. At the end of the day, I had some business partners, but it was Randy Brown's name that was on everything." It was then that Brown changed careers, with former Kings coach and longtime friend Reggie Theus hiring him in July 2007. While bankruptcy would mean the debt wouldn't be fully repaid, creditors wanted Brown to pay one way or another. "When it came down to it, the judge said your name is on everything and you've got to come battle for this stuff," Brown said. "My business partners went and hid behind the rocks." While the rings aren't the only valuables Brown has been forced to give up, he said they are his most cherished possessions. "They went for my heart," Brown said. "They knew those rings were on my finger, my name was on those banners. They went for my heart, they went for my name, and for the most part they were successful. They don't care about what happens with those rings." Until last week, Brown had been told he could regain the rings by way of a third party through the auction. Now, however, he has been informed otherwise. If Brown can't reclaim the rings, he said the Bulls could replace them. "It pulled me apart," Brown said. "Legally, I understand these creditors wanted the rings, but they knew they were getting my heart."
  10. I may be purchasing a bike that has sat for 3 years. I am sure I should do something before trying to crank it. I was thinking of poping out the plugs and spraying some type of oil in the cylinders. And of course cleaning out the carbs and all the normal crap. but I am worried about the rings after sitting so long.. BTW, its not a venture, I will be keeping my venture, this is just a toy! Thanks
  11. G'day everyone I've pulled the engine out of my '83 Venture Royale to replace a blown head gasket. While it's out of the bike I'd like to fit new rings. If I take the sump plate off, can I get at the big-end nuts and remove the pistons or do I have to split the case ? Any advise will help. Jim O'D.....
  12. :no-no-no: No., No , No .... not them there nutts , but the scoot's seat nuts .:rotf: Having heard people talking about being able to take the scoots seat off for multiple reasons , wing nuts vibrating off and loosing them , or not being able to access a wrench easily . So I did the same thing like I did for my saddle bag bolts . Using the original nuts off the stock seat , I drilled a hole completely through the bottom of the 2 seat nuts using an 1/8" bit . I took an 1" stainless steel split ring (like used on key rings) and threaded one through each holes of the each nut . Then I took a stainless steel 10" fishing leader (one end has swivel and other end a snap hook) and thread the swivel end into one of the split rings on one of the nuts . Then I re-attached the nuts back onto the seat , then thread the fishing leader over to the other nut and connected the snap into the other split ring/nut .The leader prevents the nuts from backing off . Cost was only a few dollars and took about 15 minutes to make . Here's a photo . BEER30
  13. My '83 VR overheated. Long story. Anyhow, the engine is now out of the bike and the heads removed. No 1 cylinder head cracked. I'll be looking for a replacement. Meanwhile I'd like to remove the pistons, hone the barrells and fit new rings. Can the pistons be removed without splitting the case ? Jimod Darwin Australia
  14. After owning my '85 for about two years, I finally have it on the road (put on about 3000k) and it seems to run fine, but I don't have anything to compare the performance to as this is my first bike. Power wize I don't seem to have a problem overtaking a friend's '04 V star 1100. I do seem to have a weak #1 cyclinder because if I take off the spark plug wire at idle, there is no RPM change. I know it fires because if that is the only plug wire attached the cyclinder does fire. I did a compression test and it came in at just 130 (after 10 cranks) and up to 150 with some oil. The others seem to be at 150 -160 after only a few cranks. I checked valve clearance and they are right on. I'm thinking the rings are the problem. I read somewhere on this forum about using Sea Foam in the oil for sticky rings. Does this work? I think the bike sat for a number of years so it could be the problem. Is there any suggestions to trying this before I pull it apart?
