1. Hey guys, it has been a while since my last confession. Last year I and a buddy took our Ventures for a stretch. I ended up with rear rubber problems, broken toes, cracked elbow, and you know that gut feeling as she rolls to nap on ya... It started in an S curve..... Well I tell you story another time;) So in MTL I found tires - just one day away - so I had to hurry up and wait of course for a week, but they could make time to change them for me so I waited. Like many of us I am not comfortable with someone else working on my bikes, however doing it in the motel parking lot.... On my return home pulling up to the door I thought I heard a noise from the rear, also noticed she slipped back quite a bit on the side stand in 1st? I had a list of stuff I wanted to do on the bike nothing major but certainly look her over in depth and the work on the rear wheel the coming spring. Well no riding for me this year maybe next as well they tell me so I listed it. I also went through the bike with a fine tooth comb and she sold to a very nice fellow named Les, (i'm sure he'll member up) I mentioned to Les that I hadn't check the back yet but talked about her horses all being in a row and, that I would deliver her after I checked the rear end! When I drain the melon OH brother she sparkled yikes. I ran my pencil magnet through the spill, then began the tear down. The pinion as you can see one half in the pic is toast. Not sure if the bearing went first then the gear or if it was just a soft one, previous owner hauled first 2 years, so don't know if... I do know I've changed the oil and it didn't have that many miles still only 81k KLM Well regardless I am grateful she didn't lockup on my trip and that I get to spare the risk posed to Les.. So I am having a devil of a time sourcing a replacement. I have found 1 old 1200 and 1, 9 though in my territory, I posted a Canada wide search this morning but nothing so far. Does the Gen 2 bolt right on? I know they have a sensor, there seems to be many of those around.. Opinions Thoughts? Patch
2. What rear end can be used in an inverted position (to reverse rotation) ? Should be close to 3.09 ratio. Are there any rear ends that allow flipping just the ring and pinion? (I did it once on a VW that I put a Corvair engine in.)
3. Ok, Got the bike up and got the pumpkin off. Splines to the u-joint aren't completely dry, but, not much grease on them. Next question is how much pressure should it take to pull the drive shaft out of the pinion?
4. ]I am in the process of swapping out the tranny of my 83 and transplanting a tranny from an 86. Now back in 2005 after the very first Vogel, I had to replace the pinion gear in it. We pulled it out, dropped the oil pan to make sure there wasnt too much debris left in the engine. Its been 7 years and I have been riding around until about a year ago and the tranny finally quit shifting and I had to lay it up for this repair. We finally got it opened up this weekend and once we did we were in for quite a surprise to find quite a bit of metal bits, not just shavings but nice size chunks of the pinion gear, we fished it out with a magnet and got all of it out. We first realized what we were in for when I pulled the oil pump out and quite a few bits of metal fell out of it and when I shook it you could hear it rattling around inside of it. Take a look at the pinion and all the metal we took out 7 years later!!! If you take a look at picture #2 you will notice that the threaded part is broken off, this is what precipitated the destruction of the pinion........and when we pulled it all apart, the rest looked fine with the exception of the star wheel that rachets the shift, one of the pins was loose, becasue the tab that was supposed to hold it in place was bent and the pin was slipping out. I believe that is where my main problem was.
5. I was geting ready to swap out the final drive on my 88 with a drive from a 2nd gen when I noticed that I could move the pinion from side to side with just my hand. Is there a way to take up the slop in the pinion or will the unit have to be taken apart and reshimed. Sure dont want to do all that work still have the noise still. Thanks.
6. Anybody here have any experience with rebuilding them? I tore up the spider gears in my 78 this spring. I had bought a new ring and pinion to change the ratio from the 3.25:1 that was in it to go to 3.89:1 so it would be more ideal with the transmission gearing, peak horsepower, and tire size I would be running a while back. Now is a good time to get them in while I was replacing the diff case seeing as how the original one had holes punched through it. But now that I have everything together, I need to set the rotational force on my pinion and carrier bearings. But I don't have a torqometer, and a spanner wrench would also come in handy. Would anybody happen to have either of these and be willing to lend them or help out who lives in the Thorp/Eau Claire/ Chippewa Falls/ Abbotsford , WI. area? Anybody have any tips or hints that I should be aware of? Anybody have the proper torque specs? I've found several places on the net with them, but they vary a bit from one to the other. One says to set the preload on the pinion to 22-32 inch lbs., which definitely feels way to tight. I just don't want to go through all the money and trouble just to have the thing melt down or explode on me. Thanks for any assistance, Bill
7. OK I sent my V-Max final I just bought to Pegscraper to have the speed sensor hole installed for the RSV. It was reported to be off a '98 with 16000 miles on it. When he took it apart he found the pinion gear that showed galling on the faces. I've dealt with galling before but not in a situation like this. It almost looks like a bad gear casting. Generally the gall is shiney, gouged and flaky looking. Attached are some pics of what he found. These are the worse, but they are all show signs. The ring gear has none and looks good. I'm at a loss as to what to do. Has anyone here... Squeeze?? seen this before, and is the pinion still usable?? Should I take the chance?? I could salvage a pinion out of another final, but will it work without having to deal with backlash etc.?? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
8. Since I have my wheel off waiting for a tire. I decided to seperate the shaft from the drive to inspect "stuff" aka pinion nut. Pinion nut = good. I did this 15 years ago. Wow, how have things changed. NOW, the seal I believe needs to be replaced. Basically there is a rust ring left by the rubber seal where it mates to the drive. Plus the original seal was never sitting straight. So the rust ring is not even. Basicallly the seal is "tipped". And a new seal would likely be better than the original. Here's the kicker...this ain't no average seal. It appears to be on the shaft with a VERY tight metal collar. I suspect if I do get this seal off there will be rust under the collar. Anyone ever change this seal? HELP See pics...
9. Anyone have a final drive for a 1300 1st gen you're willing to part with? My Pinion shaft is broken. Alternatively, I guess I could use a pinion, although I prefer a complete unit so I don't have to order shims etc. None currently on eBay. Thanks, Carl
