  1. THAT sounds better, but I still thought it would do better. Admittedly, I have been out of drag racing for many years. Just for curiosity, I will have to google which current bikes are the fastest & their times. craigr
  2. As we did heading to the East coast last year, the gas mileage got better the farther from Omaha we got. It must be something about the mixtures. I tried staying out of OD except when going on a looong downgrade. She seem to lug some if in OD less than 80ish. To top it off, I was going to sync the carbs before we left, but I lost my Carb Sync tool. I waited til the day before the trip to balance them and can't remember where I put the darn tool! - I know, very stupid. craigr
  3. Wow! - I hope those times are rider error / lack of experience. Back in 80, I had a Honda 750 Four with a 970cc kit in it and all built up for racing, it did a 10.7 1/4 mile which for the time was pretty respectable. I always tell everyone that these new bikes would blow mine away 'straight off the dealer floor'. What are the new V-Max's rated for on the 1/4? Does anyone have any idea what the 1st & 2nd Gens Venture will do? craigr
  4. We got home from our 14 day MC Trip from Omaha, NE to Washington / Canada Border to San Diego / Mexican border then east to Vegas then down to I-40 / Route 66 to Ok City then North to Omaha! Around 5.5k'ish miles!! - The heat was the worst! We rode in 104°F thru Portland, but 114°F coming across the desert to & from Vegas! (I'm not sure, but at one point, I'd swear that I saw a man dressed in all red with horns & a pitch fork). I doubt I will ever bike across that desert again!! - MANY thanks to those that invented the Cooling Vests that we bought in San Diego!! The bike ran flawless and was soooo smooth. My new Bushtec trailer was packed full and I could hardly tell I was pulling it, (except losing 2 - 3 mpg). Gas mileage was HORRIBLE!! I got as low as 27mpg when running above 70mph. The best I got was 35mpg while doing 50ish. This made most of my gas stop ranges between 100 & 120 miles, which was VERY annoying! If I can't get my mileage higher, I think I will be trading this bike for something with better fuel economy before my next long trip. All of the talk about West Coast drivers being bad - Nonsense!! THEY know how to drive! When I wasn't sure which lane I needed to be in until the last moment, I just signalled and they let me over!! We had no traffic issues until KS & NE, then back to fighing for a lane & slow drivers in the wrong lane!! As most of our trips go, it was a great trip - but it is wonderful to be home. craigr
  5. The carbs I have worked on, (Mostly in the 70's and early 80s), the needle was stainless and the Jets were brass. THEN they came out with PLASTIC Jets. They said that they were more accurate because they weren't drilled with a dull drill. - I always figured it was money. I figured if I ever bought something with Plastic Jets, I would replace them with Brass. craigr
  6. My dealer told me to stay away from the ethonal. He said it eats up the rubber tips on the needles or Jets - (don't remember which). I wish they both were just metal like the old days. craigr
  7. That looks VERY sharp!! I also have the Blue Venture and was concerned about how guages would look with the Blue. One of these days I will have to come up with the courage to do it. craigr
  8. That looks like the motor on my Buddies 08 HD Road King. I wonder if that is how HD does it. craigr
  9. Rick Butler did the Seat mod for me, (which I LOVE). Anyways, he kindly replaced my stock seat nuts with the 'finger' nuts. - I can't keep the blasted things tight. They keep unscrewing themselves. I think my fingers are too fat to get a good grip on them to tighten them good. I have some blue Locktight, would it hurt / help if I put some of that on there? craigr
  10. Boy am I glad they didn't have the V-Max when I was a kid!!! I doubt I would be here today!! They look like they are ready to explode acceleration!! I could look at them all day long!! craigr
  11. Are the Badges on the Tank just Taped on too? My old bike, they were screwed to the side of the tank, had to fill in with Body Putty.
  12. Lately, I have seen a couple 2nd Gens with the Fairing 'Whiskers' removed - I like the look. Are they just held on with double-sided tape? I already took the Yamaha label off the trunk, which came off okay, but the tape & glue were stubborn. I used a heat gun and WD-40. craigr
  13. When we first bought our bike, we got 40ish, then we took it to the dealer for the initial check up & carbs balance. Mileage has been mid 30s since!!! Last summer we took a trip from Omaha to N. Carolina, up to D.C., then Chicago & back to Omaha. We DID get around 40ish mpg when we got closer to the east coast, then it dropped back down to mid 30s the closer we got to home. We are heading to the West coast this year, I hope the mileage doesn't continue to drop the farther west we go. craigr
  14. According to MY dealer.... While looking at & discussing the new Kaw Voyager, he said he sells A LOT of Ventures, 'Several a week'. (B.S. ?) - I don't see many on the road, but then again he is from the next town over. Maybe they are all over there. He does sell them for a grand or two less than the guys here in Omaha. As far as a new Venture, I wonder if the V-4 is hurting the sales. Seems like everyone wants the 'potato, potato' sound. - I know I am getting tire of mine sounding like a sewing machine, (saving for pipes). The cruiser Market is pretty full with almost any model / size you want. As stated above, GW & HD are stiff competitors for any other touring machines. craigr
  15. Heh, Heh, Heh....
  16. I like 40 to 50 on the back highways - as long as I am not holding anyone up. Not much air buffeting and I can hear the radio better. Even with the radio off, it just seems more relaxing around those speeds, riding thru the rolling hills of Western Iowa. craigr
  17. If the bike is still under Warranty, is the shock covered by that warranty? I think mine has a slow leak in it. craigr
  18. I see you used a wood block - good idea. I didn't think of that. Probably easier to get the Jack under it, mine is awful close when on the lean. craigr
  19. Dropped mine last year - while sitting still. The bill was $4500 - craigr
  20. I don't mean to steal this thread or argue, but.... The harder you work any machine, the sooner it wears out, right? I always thought that is why we all want the car that was driven only on Sundays, by a little old lady, back and forth to Church. When I sell MY bike, the person getting it will be getting a welll taken care of, not abused bike, or ridden hard - like I would want to buy. I would NEVER knowingly buy a bike that has been ridden as you describe. Now to step off my soapbox... I HAVE taken my bike and run her hard - buried the speedo, just to see what she would do. Believe me, I am not one of those guys that wraps myself in mattress padding, goes way under the speed limit, won't ride in the rain, etc... I LOVE the power she has when I want to pass someone. I just don't ride my tourer like I would a crotch-rocket, (throw away bike). That being said, I'm done. craigr
  21. THAT sounds more like abuse!!
  22. I like when he was taunting the Mini-Van AND when it started raining! My kids are out of the house - no more 'family truckster', so I thought the taunting was funny. The rain - he got what was coming to him. craigr
  23. If there weren't reservations required, I would like at least one. craigr
  24. Havent all of us done this at one time or another? Mine cost the Insurance Company $4500 last year.
  25. We did a trip from Nebraska to N. Carolina last year and missed just a couple of states, Florida being one of them. So, now we have to make another trip down that way to pick those states up. I think it would be neat to take the LONG bridges out to the keys. We have 4 years left on our warranty, we need to get all 49 of the states in before the warranty runs out. craigr
