  1. Dumb question ...... I'm 48 and never had them, (knock on wood). I've heard of them and how terrible it is to have them. What causes them? craigr
  2. That sure is a pretty bike. Since they are held on with double sided tape, if I don't like mine without the badges, I could always just put them back on.
  3. That is really a good looking first Gen.. Looking at it from the side, don't the first generations kinda look like the 'sport tourer's' that they are coming out with now? It kinda looks like it is moving when sitting still. craigr
  4. This is probably a dumb question, but here goes anyway... Approx. 7k ago, I replaced my stock tires with Avons. Everything has gone okay until lately. They started making noise on the lean. So I checked them and I think they are cupping. I have kept 41ish pounds in them, per the service manual. I almost always ride two-up. Now tonight I hopped on it and it feels weird up to about 30 to 40mph. Almost sluggish with the turns, I thought I had a low tire, so I checked it again, this time with 2 different tire guages. They both read 40ish psi. What are the chances of these Avons needing a different tire pressure than the book says? I'd swear that the tire looks like it has been run quite a while with low pressure - which as I said above, I always keep at 40ish psi. craigr
  5. After looking at a recent photo of my blue/black bike out in the sun, I am having 2nd thoughts about removing the tank badges. It might look too 'bare' without them. So I am going to hold off on the badges until I see a bike like our without them. craigr
  6. I ride prolly 90% 2 up, and get apprrox 36mpg on average. We typically really start looking for a gas station at 120 miles. If I know there is one at 140, I will usually go for it, depending on the gas guage. In so areas where we didn't know where the next one was because of many small towns or sunday or ???, I stopped with as few as 80 miles on the tank. I don't like doing this. Just because I CAN go 250 to 300 miles with the Aux Tank, doesn't mean I HAVE to wait that long to stop. It simply means that I can if I want to. It's kinda like being in a gun fight, you probably won't need more than a clip, but it sure would be nice to have a copule of extra clips - just in case. Then there is also the 'cool' factor. - That is if it's made to look nice. If I can't do this without it looking darn near professional, then I won't do it at all. I don't want this project to look like it was done with bailing wire & duct tape. I'm thinking that the fuel tank or compartment for the aux tank will be painted to match the trailer. So you won't know what it is unless you really take a close look at it. As far as using a 'T' at the petcock, I worry what effect that would have on fuel to the factroy fuel pump. There would be actual fuel pressure going to it rather than just the gravitiy from the tank. So, I will have to look further into this option. craigr
  7. After reading the posts on this thread and other threads in the past, I just have to say it at least once.... I haven't been riding a motorcycle for many years because it's the 'safe' way to travel. I didn't water ski because it was safe, especially the Jump & slalom course. I don't continue to ride in the rain rather than pull into a hotel, because the hotel is safer, etc... There are certain inherant risks to all that we do in life. I personally don't see using an auxiliary tank as any more dangerous than having one between my legs while on the bike. If something bad happens to me while doing these 'dangerous' activities, then it happens. I'm not going to spend my life wrapped in a mattress in front of my television at home, just to make sure I am safe and survive to age 100. If I die young, my family and friends will at least be able to say that I enjoyed life instead of constantly worrying about losing it. I have pushed the limits many times in my life and usually come out on top. Those times I haven't, I heal up and usually tried them again. I like to LIVE - not just survive. For those that just want to play the game of just trying to see who can survive the longest, motorcycling probably isn't the best thing for you. To each his own. Live how you want to live, but please don't bash me because I choose to do something that you might consider to be a little be dangerous. I carry my own insurance so you won't have to pay my bills if / when I get hurt. There, I gave my rant. craigr
  8. Red1 - The reason for the Aux Tank is two-fold. 1. To extend my range. 2. I am seldom ready for a stop when the gas tank is. I just want to keep on riding. So, stopping alongside the road to transfer the gas is about the same as stopping at a Gas Station - I don't want to HAVE to stop. As far as the plumbing goes, the guy I met on the GW with a similar setup, had an auxilliary fuel pump to pump the fuel from the Aux Tank into his main tank. He told me that when his MAIN tank got to around 1/4, he just hits a switch and the aux fuel pump pumps from the AUX tank to his MAIN tank in approx 15 minutes, (if I remember right). Now HIS aux tank was only 3 gallons, I think I want 5. I plan to run the Aux fuel line up the frame and use steel line once it is on the bike, (I think), just so it looks better. I don't want a piece of rubber hose 'zip tied' along the frame. I think this would look tacky. I would like this to look as professional as I can. I have yet to figure out where to locate the Aux fuel pump and the plumbing of how to get the fuel into the MAIN tank - where to plumb what. I don't think I can use the main petcock, so I am wondering about drilling the tank and installing a one-way valve for the Aux Fuel line. craigr
  9. Good idea on the Boat gas line connectors. But, for my application, (on the front of my trailer), I thought why not carry the boat idea further. What about an Aux Tank for a Boat, painted black to match my trailer, then set on a frame welded to the tongue just in front of the trailer body? I know my trailer has the option for a cooler in that position, so the weight shouldn't affect anything. Of course this is just off the top of my head, but may warrant further thought. craigr
  10. Rick Butler seat mod is all it took to make me comfortable. 750 mile day with no sore butt. The only problem I have with my 2nd Gen Venture seat, is the Vinyl makes my backside sweat. craigr
  11. I took the trailer because the Applefest also had a craft fair and the gals that were with us, (5 couples), all thought it would be a good idea, just in case someone found something they wanted that wouldn't fit on their bikes. It ended up being used to haul everyones leathers, as it got warmer in the afternoon. I was surprised at how little the Applefest had to do with Apples. I saw one table selling Apples and a couple of stands selling Apple Slushies. It was a lot of fun though, and I was please to see soooo many bikes. My wife made one observation that I hadn't noticed. Most of the bikers were older in age, (40ish & up), not too many younger riders. I will definately go again next year. craigr
  12. I wondered if that was you, although I know there are plenty 1st Gens around. I parked just North of you. I was the Blue/Black with a trailer. One of these days we might actually meet craigr
  13. That just HAS to be a joke - no one is THAT stupid. It is just someone trying to get some attention on the Audi forum. craigr
  14. An aquaintance let me sit on his new 08 Venture with a Corbin that the dealer installed before he picked the bike up. THAT seat, (hard as most Corbins are), does make you sit lower to the ground. craigr
  15. Well it sounds like Alaska may not be off the radar after all. What is the best time of year to head up there? We will have to wait a couple of years, this was a VERY expensive year for us. Our daughter got married, our trip to the West Coast, and a couple others. So we thought a one week trip is about all we should take next year. We still have 3 more summers on our warranty. I want to get all our our states in before the warranty runs out. craigr
  16. Did any of you go to Apple Fest in Woodbine, IA today? I saw a 1st Gen Venture parked there, but didn't see anyone around it. I just HAVE to print some of this site's cards and carry on my bike. craigr
  17. I just noticed something today. There are bubbles in the sight glass for the clutch. This seems odd. Might they have done a poor job of flushing the fluid then bleeding the air out and THIS be causing the little slippage? I don't remember ever seeing bubbles in there before, although since that is just a resevoir for the fluid and the bubbles are on the top, I don't see how they could be pushed into the line. - Am I thinking this right? craigr
  18. To me, it just seems insane that a m/c clutch can wear out at 20k!! I have NEVER replaced a clutch on any of my past M/Cs though this is my biggest and the only one I bought new. If I HAVE to replace it I will, but I hate to spend the money if it isn't the real problem. I did just have the bike in for its 16k service, (at 20k). I am going to take the bike back and ask them to check the clutch for air since they were supposed to change the fluid during that service. craigr
  19. This is an old post, but I am now running into a similar problem at 20K on my 07 Venture. I have always run Mobile 1 from Walmart and never noticed a problem. - Is there a Mobile 1 specific for Motorcycles? - Could this be my problem? If so, where do I find Mobile 1 for bikes? If it IS the clutch spring thing, shouldn't it be covered by warranty? craigr
  20. Something to mention that is VERY inportant.... DON'T put your kickstand down!! My son had a visit from a friend in Texas who trailered his Crotch Rocket to Omaha. He has never trailered a bike before and didn't know any better. When he took the bike off the trailer, the Kickstand and mount were bent pretty good. So they spent a day or so tracking down and replacing the parts. craigr
  21. Wow, I'm surprised to hear (read), that some think the BUBs are too loud. For me they are just right. I have always thought my stock exhaust made my Venture sound 'like a sewing machine'. - One step up from a Goldwing. I don't find my BUBs annoying at highway speeds, and really don't notice them unless I listen for them or accelerate. - My wife really loves the 'bark' when I jump on it. So far, I plan to keep mine just as they are. I don't know about the K&N part, but am anxious to see the coming replies. craigr
  22. I am sooo sorry to hear of your troubles. Please keep us posted on your condition. Prayers sent. craigr
  23. Well I thought of that, but we only use our tailer once or twice a year. And when the trailer is hooked up, it stays hooked up for the length of the trip. That is why I was thinking of something as simple of a rubber gas line and a couple of hose clamps - IF the hose would hold up to all of the flexing. Of course, I would put shut-offs at each side of the joint. craigr
  24. I believe I want to remove the tank badges and whiskers from the fairing. I have already removed the sticker from the tank and the 'Yamaha' from the trunk. For those I used WD-40 to get the glue off, then used wax to clean up the mess that the WD-40 just smeared around. First off, are the tank badges just double sided taped on? Or, am I going to have to fill holes like in the old days? Secondly, is there something out there better for getting the glue off than WD-40, that won't hurt the paint? WD-40 and wax does do it, but it takes alot of elbow grease too. And lastly, is there and easy was of getting these chrome items off without damaging them? - Just in case I want to put them back on at a later date. craigr
  25. That's horrible! I'm glad you weren't hurt worse. I bet I go check my Valve Stems before the next ride though. craigr
