  1. You mean like Harley?
  2. I did notice some skipping around.
  3. FI all the way, carbs are to finnicky. You could have multiple maps for performance or economy with the flick of a switch. Never had trouble with FI. No diaphrams, floats, tiny clogged jets, seating them properly, mixture adjustments, needles, etc. or any of the other pain in the butt carb issues. Gotta think its at least $250.00 to do that.
  4. No doubt Honda makes a good product, smooth a glass motor, nice and quiet and the crotch rocket of touring bikes. I've been considering one my buddy has let me drive his 1800 once in awhile trying to convert me. They are quality bikes and they have a huge dealer network, but I have to say I liked my other buddies BMW1200LT a little better not the same power as the GW but more advanced technologically speaking even though its a 1999. Even my GW buddy who worships the GW thought the BMW was a better bike, but he's addicted to the power the GW makes. The thing that kills me about BMW is the lack of dealers, but I love their bikes though Honda is probably a little more reliable. BMW has their linked set up different if I remember right the front brake operates a piston in the rear caliper and the fronts and the rear is by itself which I can deal with better then the Honda/Yamaha set up of the rear brake operating the rear and a front disk. I like the rear brake just operating the rear caliper just for that gravel/wet surface thing and using the rear in turns. I really dont want the front operating in those described conditions unless I want it to. With ABS I don't think you really need linked brakes IMHO. I'll probably end up getting a GW in the future instead of BMW just because of the shear amount of used parts and dealers that can be found. Unless Yamaha wants to build an 1800 that has a sporty look to it rather then the classic look but thats a whole nuther discussion.
  5. I agree about proper braking technique. It's important to learn. I think ABS is a much better option then that crap called linked brakes. At least with ABS you have individual control of each wheel. I dont like linked on loose surfaces or wet surfaces. A friend of mine has a 1999 BMW K1200LT a really advanced bike for its time ABS, moveable windshield, heatg grips, seats. His bike according to what he says you can turn off the ABS if you want to which I think is great. I wouldnt use it in dry conditions but I would in wet. Why cant other manufactures take a page out thier book?
  6. Dont have a set of 2nd gen needles. I have a set of 83-85 more taper to them then 86-93 more power but less mileage I would suspect.
  7. Talk about taking it to the edge!
  8. When I changed the front master cylinder to a different one it didnt have a fluid level sensor so I took the wires that ran to the original sensor and connected them together problem solved. I dont know if the rear has a fluid sensor. Hope this helps.

  10. Check Rockauto.com here http://rockauto.com/ they have decent prices.
  11. It's like putting your helmet on the seat its gonna end up on the ground anyway might as well put it there to begin with.
  12. My son is starting this too I guess here in Illinois I can let him drive on his permit for 2 yrs and my rates wont go up course he wont have his license but he will get drive with me or the wife. Ive been considering doing this.
  13. Saw a blue Venture 1st Gen MkII South bound on Arlington Hts rd near Thomas street in Arlington Hts ,Illinois yesterday about 9:30 am anyone of us? Guy was wearing white helmet.
  14. I use a digital tach attached to one of the plug wires. I set the regular idle screw to about 1000 rpm and sync the carbs. I then set the mixture screws at about 1.5 to 2 turns out. Then one carb at a time I turn the screw out about a 1/4 turn and see what happens to the idle speed if it goes up after about 15 seconds I'll do the others about 1/4 turn and see how the idle responds. I keep doing this until I get the max rpm or when the idle starts to drop. I stop at the highest idle point and leave it. Then reset the main idle screw at 1000 rpm. Then resync. Then I'm done.
  15. PICTURES PLEASE:missingtooth:
  16. I have the Gunison and I dont care for it on these motors too hard to use in the tight spark plug well. (On a Harely it would be fine to use it's easy to get to the spark plugs.) Much easier to do the RPM method. I use a digital tach and set it to the highest rpm. I would'nt waste my money on it get yourself a digital tach and save yourself the pain. Quick and easy to do no fighting trying to get the plugs out or the colortune plug in.
  17. The air box cover needs to be on to get it to run right otherwise to much air.
  18. Come on down we'll welcome you.
  19. Quit depressing me. The older I get the more I hate the cold and the snow and winter.
  20. I have done this and it worked for me. On my 1990 I have most of the original carb setup (1983 style) pilot jets 42.5 and the 180 air jets I did not use the needles though. My mileage cruising at 70 mph (GPS speed my speedo is off about 10 mph says I'm doing 80 mph) at 4000 rpm was around 34 mpg. I lowered the needles using 2 brass washers in place of the plastic spacer. 1986-1993 do not have adjustable needles, 83-85 do and they have a more aggressive taper to them then the 86-93 do. I needed to put a couple washers on top of the c clip otherwise the needle will wobble around and up and down. Mileage now is 40-43mpg. So I have to say it worked for me.
  21. Yes they seem louder then with the EVO motor. More aggressiveness to them.
  22. Sounds like junk yard prices try to charge outrageous prices for used up parts. I've walked away from a junk yard more then a few times after I heard the price. I've also noticed that the people that operate them arnt the friendliest people in the world either.
  23. I'm going to have to take one out and measure it. My micrometer battery died and cant measure. 5bikes is the one who told me about this. My carbs are modified I used the original 1983 pilot jet 42.5 instead of my 37.5's and I used the 180 air jets instead of the 170 of the 1990. Bike seems to idle better and no popping. Seems to have a snappier throttle but my mileage when I cruise at 70-75mph at 4000-4250 rpms (My indicated speed is 80-85 speedo is off.) was 33-34 mpg. Not good enough for me. 5Bikes lowered his needles and improved his mileage. I used 2 small brass washers in place of the plastic spacer on the bottom of the c-clip and 2 above the 2 above help hold the needle in place if you dont use these the needle moves around to much. The 1983-85 carb needles have I think 5 adjustment levels our 1986-93 do not have any adjustment they are also much more tapered then ours they dump in alot more fuel at higher rpms good for speed not for mileage. Now I can cruise at 70-75 mph (GPS speed) at 4000-4250 rpm and get 40-42 mpg. Power still seems pretty good. Might be slightly lean. I dont know if you giving you a measurement will equate since my carbs are different then stock but I'll get a measurement for you anyway.
  24. Sounds like the PAJ2 I think the very small pilot jets may be clogged they clog easy. You have to take the carbs out and open them to clean them they are in the jet block. I had to poke a bristle brush through them to clean them Seafaom didnt work. I have since changed mine to 42.5 instead of the 37.5's idles nicer and you actually get an idle change when adjusting the screw never happened too much with the 37.5's
