OK, I tried out the Colortune yesterday, and I don't think I am impressed at all. My plan was to use the Colortune on one cylinder, then compare the CO % of that cylinder with the others using the exhaust gas analyzer. Since I cannot find any published specifications from Yamaha for the right CO level on this engine, that seemed like a good way to approach it. The problem is that the Colortune does not seem very specific. I could turn the fuel mixture screw a LONG way in either direction without seeing any change in the color of the flame. After turning it out a lot I did eventually see a yellowish flame as I should, and if I turned it in far enough I would eventually see it begin missing a lot (mostly just a weak spark), but there was a huge range between those two points where all the sparks looked the same. I eventually just turned it in to the ultra lean point, then turned it out just a bit past where the spark seemed to be regular without any missing. The interesting part was that when I compared this setting with the original position of the mixture screw, it was almost identical! Coincidence? I have no idea. One other problem that may have contributed to the lack of a clear setting was that the spark was constantly jumping from the top of the Colortune plug to the engine, potentially causing a lot of misfires that would affect what I could see. But since this engine seems to have a dual-fire ignition with a waste spark in every cycle, there is no way to be sure how many of those arcs were really causing a misfire. I was doing this inside my garage on an overcast day where I thought the light was about right to easily read the Colortune. In addition, I was working on the left rear cylinder where it was very easy to look right down on the plug and get a clear view of the spark without needing to use their mirror attachment. Finally, I purchased the 12mm Colortune specifically for this bike instead of the generic 14mm unit with a 12mm adapter. I am glad I did this now, since the 14mm with an adapter would have had the Colortune plug sitting much further out of the cylinder, and I would be wondering if maybe that was why I found it so inaccurate. I have not yet tried out the exhaust gas analyzer, but I'll let y'all know how that goes soon. In the mean time, I would be interested in any responses from others that have actually used the Colortune. What did you think? Goose

I ordered and received a Carbtune and Colortune this week. I was very impressed with the personal service used on my order. I have no problems with setting up and using the Carbtune. However, I haven't figured out how to install and read the front two cylinders with the Colortune. I have managed to get the plug in and hook up the lead, but I can't get a visual on the glass to see the flame color. The adapter with the mirror is too long to set up without removing the tank. Is there a trick that I haven't figured out yet? I just want to know what method everyone else is using.

Ok, got my colortune and test tuned a honda. Easy enough. But reading through the manual, I am having problems finding the Mixture Set Screw. Is it the "Pilot" screw? It is the little hole in the middle under the Diaphram housing on the carbs. Any Ideas? I tried to put in a pic but I amn't dat smarts. I did attach a pic. There is a little white arrow where I think it is. IS THIS IT????????????????? Thanks Merlin

Ok, I'm in the process of rebuilding all four carbs on my '84. I've got a Carbtune and the Colortune is catching my eye for dialing in the carbs. My question is how does this item work in the deep wells on an '84 1200? Is it visable enough to be useful or do I need the buy the attachments to view it in the well? Thanks Mike

This afternoon , I rushed home to remove my leather , seat and tank off in preparation of Muffinman's arrival to colortune my scoot . Only to find out I was the guinea pig ! This was Jeff's first 2nd Gen to castrate with the colortune . He jerked out my plugs , threw them across my garage , and I thought he tried to swipe one of my spark plugs , but it fell into the scoot where it couldn't be seen . I have never heard Jeff swear so darn much , knowing he was working on a 2nd gen to be able to pass a MKII 1st gen . Watch out now Todd ! As Jeff was throttling up my scoot to view the flame front , the exhaust out of my Baron 4-2-4's almost tipped over the blonde on which it was parked behind my scoot . I have never seen Salty run so fast to try to catch it from falling , while he was telling me that "Jeff sure does smell GOOD !". Jeff asked Salty if he wanted to colortune his next , and he replied " I take the fifth " . But the smell of Jeff made him hungrier , so Salty left towards home to go get pizza . After Salty left , Jeff and I started putting the scoot back together , leather and all and to clean up the floor full of tools . "What's this ?" I asked .. "Spare part" replied Jeff . 4 brass bullet like caps as to which he replied , "Less weight , go faster ! " . So now I understand why 1st gens are faster , because they loose parts ! Now the date has been set to colortune Tim261's scoot next ! Make sure you have a catch bucket nearby there , Tim ! The scoot sounds great with the exception that Jeff took over and tuned my XM to the Black Owl radio channel . (old timer's radio) Tomorrow will be the test to see if I can twist off the speedometer . BEER30
