How This Big Old Top-heavy Bike May Have SAVED My LIFE
Sailor replied to Aimhigh's topic in Watering Hole
Hey Kevin, were you on last years ride in Victoria? It was great. They were expecting 250 bikes and 500 showed up. Prety good for a first effort. I had prostate cancer and opted for radiation. So far so good. Prostate cancer now kills more men in North America than lung cancer....and that is a lot. The key to survival is early detection, before it spreads to other organs and your bones. The psa test is a simple blood test and should be done on every guy over 50. The odds of getting it are 1 in 6. If your father had it your odds are 1 in 3. If both you and your father had it your son is almost certain to get it. -

OK so here is one for all of us. How about an International Venture Day. We pick a day and wherever we are hoist a beer/wine/whiskey or all of the above to Ventures and Venture riders.

What realy annoys me is that one financial report states that the management at GM gets more in pay, bonuses, pensions and benefits than all the workers combined. Can't blame the union for that. The company I used to work for had 350 managers to run 35 ships and 4500 employees. They now have 700 managers for the same number of ships and employees. The employees have been held to near zero increases in pay for 12 years while the managers give themselves huge pay raises. Need I say it is going broke and will probably get a government bailout.

For the third year in a row I am acting president/president of our local Legion. That means I get to write and make a speech during the Remembrance ceremonies. In the past we have honored the veterans of two world wars. One year we honored the veterans of the Burma Campaign. Last year we honored the veterans of two world wars and the Korean war. During the ceremony I had the parade turn towards Busan, Korea, where the allied cemetery is located and give a salute. This is the year of the Peace keepers. We are erecting a monument to the Peace Keepers and Peace Makers of all nations at our Legion. The official dedication will be later when it is finished but we are having an informal one on the 11th. So many people do not know what hell the veterans went through. I just watched an excellent presentation entitled " Vimy, Heaven to Hell" I want to see " Passchendaele". It is about time some of these stories were told. People do not realize that Hitler was extremely close to having an atomic bomb before the Allies. He had 17 atomic physicists, 16 were working on the bomb, the 17th was Jewish. It was the British SAS going in through Norway that stopped him. They do not also realize that Japan had already tested an atomic bomb before Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They do not know how close it really was.

Got a 2002 It is heavy but that disappears as soon as you hit the throttle. P.S. Avon Venom's seem to reduce the weight.

Her Diary Tonight I thought my husband was acting weird. We had made plans to meet at a bar for drinks. I had been shopping so I was a little late. I thought he was upset about that but he made no comment on it. Conversation wasn't flowing so I suggested we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed but didn't say much so I asked him what was wrong. He said "Nothing". I asked him if it was my fault he was upset. He said he wasn't upset, that it had nothing to do with me, and not to worry about it. On the way home I told him I loved him, he smiled and kept driving. I can't explain his behaviour. I don't know why he didn't say " I love you too". When we got home I felt as if I had lost him completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with me. He sat there and quietly watched TV. He seemed distant and absent. Finally, with silence all around I went to bed. He came to bed later. To my surprise he responded to my caresses and we made love. But I still felt he was distracted. I don't know what to do. I am sure his thoughts are with someone else. Our marriage is over. There is someone else. My life is a disaster. His Diary Bike wouldn't start today, but at least I got laid.

You guys are just plain mean! lol. Out here on the wet coast we rarely get thay ugly white stuff but we do get rain, and rain, and more rain, then we get some rain followed by rain. In Jan/Feb we get cold rain. Hawaii or Mexico are looking good right about now.

I'm retired but my wife keeps calling me a dirty dog so I guess it's a dog collar for me.

Bikers are also like sailors. When you are out on the water it is just you and your sailboat. When it gets rough it is just you and your skills and boat against the elements. To sail and survive you can not just buck the tide, waves and wind, you must ride with them, like riding a horse or a bike. You must be in tune with the bike, boat or horse and work together.

Just got back from a trip from Saltspring B.C. to Thane Wyoming to visit friends. The wife isn't up to that long a bike trip and we had another couple with us so we did it by truck. Crossed at Sumas and down rte 9 to Sedro-Wolley then rte 20 through the North Cascades. Beautiful scenery and great bike roads. 3 finger Jakes in Winthrup has the best Jack Daniels hot wings and hamburgers ever. Hit I 90 to Montana then through the North East entrance to Yellowstone. The East route is definitely the way to go through the park. Had a good visit with our friends at Thane (just south of Jackson) then back up the west side of Yellowstone. Back on the I 90 to Spokane then cut down on rte 2 through the South Cascades. Totaly different scenery but still great. The 9 Mile pub at Huson has great food and is biker friendly. Stopped at the Bavarian town of Levanworth then over to LA Connor. Both worth a visit. Got another month to go before putting the bike away for the winter. Still time for some rides.

Local knowledge can come into play too. On this Island I do not go into town on a saturday during the summer. It is packed with bubble headded tourists who don't have a clue where they are going or how to get there. I also don't go into town on the bike on 10 percent tuesday. That is when the stores have 10 per cent off their prices and all the blue rinse babes and bi focal boys get out and play bumper tag in the parking lots. They drive by memory and telephone poles as they can't see over the dash. I tell anyone who is interested that 80 percent of the drivers will never see you, 10 percent will see you but figure you are a drug dealing rapist biker and try to run you off the road, the other 10 percent will wave and smile, their bike is at home.

I used to live in the city (Vancouver, B.C.) and hated it. When I moved to the island everyone kept asking "What on earth do you do there?" I would tell them that the first thing I did each morning was wake up, look out at the lake, turn on the Vancouver traffic report and laugh myself silly.

Just got back from England. It cost $200.00 to fill the tank on the Volvo I rented. That is about $10.00/gal, down from$12.00

Big speakers + heavy metal = headache -
Just got back from 3 weeks in England. What you saw is "normal" driving over there. We rented a Volvo ( there were 5 of us). You would not believe the way they drive. I figure they all start the day with a dozen amphetamines washed down with a gallon of coffee then hit the road. Lunch is another dozen amphetamines with a pint of Gin. Picture yourself going down a narrow, winding 2 lane road at 50 MPH (10 under the speed limit) with your left hand mirror ticking the rock wall and your right hand mirror about 5 in. from the oncoming traffic while some idiots are trying to pass you. Just then, without warning it becomes a single lane with 2 way traffic. Sure keeps you on your toes. I really loved rounding a corner at 50 and seeing two rock walls with a sign saying "not suitable for vehicles over 6'6" in width". Think fast, How wide is this damn car? Their freeways are great. 3 lanes usually with trucks limited to 60 in the right hand lane, cars doing 80 in the middle lane which leaves the right hand lane free for those doing 100 and above.

Glad to hear you came through OK. They can fix the bike but they just can't fix "stupid"

The tape deck may be a problem and on mine the fuel gauge is wildly inaccurate, The Avons are worth switching to.

I have the same problem on my 02. I make tapes off my old vinyl and off the CD's to play but I have given up due to trying to get it to eject. Also have a problem trying to keep the door closed.
