  1. In a previous post, I mentioned getting a free one day rental from Appleton HD. The ride was taken last weekend and greatly enjoyed. I am starting this as a new thread since the topic has changed from 'what should I do with a free day of riding an HD' to 'What I did with a free day of riding an HD'. Also, want to provide my review of the HD as compared to the Venture. To begin with, let's review the dealer (Appleton HD). They are great. The sales folks on the floor were very knowledgeable of their product. There were a couple of esoteric questions they didn't know (fusing on the cig lighter - in case I needed to use my road compressor), but mostly, they knew their stuff. Their recommendation on a bike to take was also right on. Very impressive dealer. After looking at the selections (all the big bikes were available) and listening to their expertise, I chose a Road Glide Ultra. This is the same as the Ultra Classic but with a frame mounted fairing instead of a fork mounted fairing. The RG fairing was also about 8" further forward providing a much larger, less cramped feeling, riding compartment. Very nice. The RGU had all the bells and whistles. Radio, CB, Ipod interface - What?? No cassette??? ABS front and rear, 6 speed tranny, 103 ci of bone rattling power. The bike provided was totally stock. Rode the Venture up to pick up the bike Saturday at 11:00ish. They advised to just bring it back when I was done - even if it was after hours Sunday. Just drop the key thru the slot. Cool. Interestingly, parked next to a '90 blue Venture when I pulled in. Anyhoo, after the appropriate paperwork, they took me out to the bike and gave me an introduction - how everything works. I packed a change of clothing and various stuff in the cavernous saddle bags, threw on my helmet, plugged in my headset (yes, the plug is the same as the Venture), and took off. The Venture was resting comfortably under their overhang under the watchful eyes of a security camera. Really a nice setup. Wanted to get my money's worth out of this free rental, so I took off for BBQ. Original destination was Kansas City, MO. Unfortunately, a series of items prevented me from making it that far in time to beat closing at Arthur Bryant's BBQ. First - It wasn't an hour before I started squirming on the stock seat. Was also getting the little pain between the shoulder blades that is indicative of handle bars that don't pull back far enough. Couldn't ride more than about 100-125 miles before needing to stop and stretch. Frustrating. Added the Airhawk to the seat and that helped some. Also added the sheepskin and the seat/butt issue was mostly resolved. Nothing I could do about the back pain. Also, there were no highway pegs so not much room to move around the legs. Second - My 6 year old Zumo 550 battery quickly ran out of juice. It is never run without a hard wired power source, so I'm sure the battery is pretty much toast. So, I plugged in the charger to the cig lighter (had a cig lighter to USB converter). Unfortunately, you can't operate the Zumo and change it in this way at the same time. Oh well, I know where I am going - at least up to hitting KC. So I thought. Missed the split to HWY 151 from Hwy 61 south of Dubuque, IA. Therefore, added about 60 miles by detouring thru Davenport. That combined with having to stop too often meant KC wasn't going to happen. However, all was not lost. I found an amazing BBQ joint in Des Moines, IA. SmokeyD's BBQ (http://www.smokeydsbbq.com). They have won an impressive number of contests both locally and nationally. And it tasted like it. Had a combo of pulled pork and brisket and they were both amazing - especially the brisket. I WILL go there again. Found a cheap hotel just outside of Des Moines since I was not in any hurry to get back. Was on the road at about 7:15 Sunday morning under a clear sunny sky and about 45 degrees. Beautiful weather. Took the missed 151 back to Dubuque, crossed into Wisconsin, and then proceeded to head up the Great River Road. I figured there was enough experience on the slab, need to see how it works in some curves. Stopped at Dewey Nelson State Park just north of Cassville and took some pictures. Road along the WI River on Hwy 60 all the way to Columbus. Stopped in Fox Lake to show the bike to Scooter Bob, stopped by the house to show the bike to my boys, and then headed back to Appleton. Had to run past about 15 miles to get the mileage over 1000. All in all, a great weekend was had. The next installments will have pictures and an evaluation/comparison. RR

Looking forward to seeing everyone arriving there safely. Anyone still on the fence? We need to get our banquet / BBQ numbers in to the catering dept at the New Grand fairly soon.

  8. Got back Sunday after a quick BBQ tour to complete my Smoke Chasing requirements (fund raiser for Eddie's Roads). Ate BBQ in Iowa, Illinois, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Indiana. Left Friday from Fond du Lac, WI at 1:30 in the afternoon and got home Sunday night at 6:30. 1842 miles in 55 hours. Good food, good miles, good times. Here are a couple of pics that highlighted the trip (above and beyond the BBQ). First, was parked between two nice, shiny HDs in front of Jack's BBQ in downtown Nashville, TN. My bike is set up for touring (aux. fuel tank, cables everywhere, etc.) and was dirty from riding in the rain. As I prepare to take off after eating BBQ (Yummm!! Good stuff at Jack's), this young lady asked if she could sit on my bike to get her picture taken. Ummmmm, YEAH!!! Second, on the north side of Chicago, I surpassed the 100,000 mile mark on the Venture. Had to pull over and document the occasion. Just about time to put the bike away and break out the guns. Been a good riding season. RR
  9. Well, I have 8 states of BBQ left to fulfill my Smoke Chasing requirement. http://www.teamstrange.com/2011/scgt/ Been lazy about it all summer, and now I need to finish it up this weekend. Heading out Friday afternoon and hitting an early dinner at Dickey's BBQ Pit in Davenport, IA and a late night snack at the Dr. of BBQ in Springfield, IL. Sat. breakfast at Ray's in West Memphis, AR, lunch at Central BBQ in Memphis, TN, and afternoon snack at BBQ By Jim in Tupelo, MS. Early dinner will be at Jacks in Florence. AL, with the late night meal at Jack's in Nashville, TN. Sunday morning will start with breakfast at BBQ Inn, Bowling Green, KY and a quick lunch at Wolf's BBQ in Evansville, IN. Friday night will be staying somewhere south of St Louis, Saturday night somewhere between Nashville and Bowling Green. Streets and Trips shows it at 1770 miles. Shouldn't have any difficulty with the mileage as long as I can keep the... ahhem..rest stops to a minimum. Should be at Central BBQ at noon on Saturday if anybody would care to join me. I won't be staying to chat much after the meal, but would enjoy meeting some of the southern contingent. And, yes, I realize there are 9 BBQ Joints on the list. Never know if one is closed. RR
  10. Myself and a buddy that is also a venture owner are going to be riding out to the world famous Lynchburg TN on Aug 12-14. It is a short trip but it gets us out of town and to an awesome place. We of course will tour the Jack Daniels Distillery, his first (I believe) and my I have lost count. We also have our reservations to the Noon time BBQ lunch at BBQ Hill on the Jack Daniels Distillery property for Aug 13. While out there we will of course get some great country road riding in. So my reason for posting is to see if any of you that have been or live nearby have any recommendations on good roads and eateries. I do know of TN 129 outside of town (not the dragon) is a nice ride. Also if there are any others that might be there local or out-of-towners that may want to meet up. If any of y’all have some input I look forward to the reading.
  11. Good morning everyone: Our friend LoriB needs to travel home today. We along with graderman46 and Babe are going to ride with her as far as Thermopolis (100 miles). Lori will continue to ride on home solo. The rest of us are going to take in the hot pools and relax! Returning in the afternoon. We will likely miss the BBQ but are looking forward to the dinner tonight. We are going to breakfast at 8:00 and leaving at 9:00. Others are welcome, if you want to go give us a call. 308-765-0167.
  12. I have about 2000 miles on nankang car tire 2006 rsv midnight. Today I blew the cobbs out and hit rev limiter in 3rd gear, about the time 95-100 mph got the wobble. It felt more like the bike was weaving in the back end. Just finnished a 600 mile round trip to KC for bbq riding 2 up no problems. I will probably stay on the darkside as I don't usually go past 75mph.
  13. http://www.smokechasing.com/ $25 to sign up, and you then try to meet certain goals set by the tour-- Rider must visit a minimum of 15 BBQ Joints to be considered a Smoke Chasing Grand Tour finisher. Finisher Levels are: a) Griller Visit 3 different states & eat at 5 different BBQ joints in each state b) Smoker Visit 5 different states & eat at 3 BBQ joints in each state c) BBQ Pit Master Visit 15 different states & eat at 1 BBQ joint in each state .

  15. well i live about 70 yards from the tavern here. while pulling up i saw 2 police cars one putting a bike not a motorcycle in the trunk of there car. so i went up and asked hey what happened? they said well we just charged this man with dui. its one of them electric bikes. and he went up the back yard and did a nose dive in the bbq pit in the back yard of the tavern. its about a 3 ft drop they roast pigs in it durring the summer. i said you can charge him with driving under the influence. they said yep . it is a motorized bike???? i got to see how this pans out in court....
  16. Sunday weather just magic...so we joined the Patriots M.C. for great ride, and to raise funds for our local Telethon. Ride finished at Hillary's Boat Harbor and we passed around buckets for donations to the people spending the day there. Then headed back to their clubhouse for a BBQ and raffle. Fantastic day spent with great bikers [serving & veterans of all services] and we raised $AU7,300 :dancefool:

  19. Figured I'd ask now so folks can let me know if they are interested. Either way I'm going to this. Oct 23rd is the BBQ festival in Lexington NC. Had a chat with U-turn I think about doing this. Anyway I have the link added here so you can check it out. As far as I can tell we'd have to park and then ride a shuttle bus to where the festival is. They don't want vehicles parked too close. Oh and they will tow. They do have a handicap parking area that is close to the festival. Now they start at 8:30 with their opening ceremonies but the BBQ tents don't open up till 10. So I'm figuring who needs to be there for the opening stuff, we're interested in the food. Plus they have some entertainment and of course souvenirs. I've never been to this festival but I haven't been to a festival I didn't like, they all have food. So let me know if you are interested and we'll set it up as a meet and eat. Plus if anyone needs to spend the night might want to be able to make reservations now. There's links to hotels on the site. http://www.barbecuefestival.com/ Margaret
  20. My wife and I are heading to Springfield, MO this next W/E. Does anyone know of a VERY GOOD BBQ place down there? I would like to try so real Southern BBQ, to see if it is any different from what we have in Omaha, NE. Any other suggestions would be appreciated as well. We are hitting Branson for a day or two next week to check out the Baldknobbers also. I've never seen a stage show before and friends have told me that I will really enjoy that show. craigr
  21. Well folks, the time is drawing near. Eileen is placing the order for food today. As near as I can determine, we should have right at 200 people this year. Really looking forward to seeing all our old friends and meeting some new ones. Also wondering how many people might be wanting to go our for dinner on Friday night. Charlie want BBQ and there is a decent place up on 58 near Amherst. Probably about 15 miles away. I'm not sure though that they can handle a large group. Let me know who is interested and I'll call and find out.
  22. for all those that may not know about it randall at the hub is going to bbq for us on tuesday night of the meet. if you are going to attend the bbq go to vr polls and vote, so we can get a count. it will be pay the hub when you eat. randall really enjoys entertaining the bikers and he volunteered to do this for us. thanks bill
  23. I have made my decision as to what we are going to serve for our Saturday Banquet at Vogel. This year I am letting someone else bring all the food and do all the cooking, so I will have more free time to spend with everyone else. We will be having Shane's BBQ. They have excellent BBQ and Brunwick stew, theirs is one of my favorites. The menu will consist of: Pulled Pork BBQ Chicken Brunswick Stew 1 other side dish, to be choosen from a list.** (Suggestions welcome) Peach Cobbler Unsweetened Tea Sweet Tea Lemonade Please if you havent registered, it would help greatly in determining how many I have to order for, if you are undecided, at least go to the poll in the poll section and indicate how many of you will be coming. This will insure that everyone gets enough to eat. I would rather have a little too much than not enough.
  24. i get a news letter from 1300T group because i thought about buying one before i got my Venture any way i got one this week and they are putting on some big meet and greet this year in the smokies and from what i am reading Yamaha might pay the food bill. i wll paste what the letter say. I have some exciting news! Yamaha has taken notice of our group and wants to participate in our Meet & Greet! Join us June 10th at 5pm at Mountain Motorsports located at 3422 Adventure Lane, Kodak, TN. Yamaha will be footing the bill for a BBQ dinner (still pending approval). The dinner will be catered by Buddy's BBQ (once approved). The buffet will include BBQ Pork with sauce on the side, baked beans, coleslaw, potato chips, and buns. Iced tea and lemonade will be the beverages available. We will charge $5 minimum (donate more if you like) per person for dinner, and 100% of these contributions will be donated to the Smoky Mountain Children's Home! has Yamaha ever done this for Venturerider group? i know it says pending approval but they had to get somebody some where to talk to them about it and it is for the childrens home.
  25. If anyone wants to stay in some VERY nice facilities in Leakey,Texas,(Right in the middle of the famed "Three Sisters" Area) I HIGHLY recommend this place , http://www.friopecanfarm.com/fpffacilities.html , While Leakey has a "Motorcycle Only" facility,It is great for Bikers. If you are looking for ALL accomodations,IE:Full kitchen, pots and skillets included plus mixer etc PLUS Heavy steel constructed BBQ Pitts at every cabin and alongside the Frio River plus right in the middle of a huge Pecan Orchard this place is NICE. It seems pricey but splitting with another couple it is well worth it.We rented a 2Bedroom Cabin,2 baths,1 in each bedroom for $140.00 a night. They are super friendly people.I even asked if they would accommodate a large Venture Rider group and they gave me keys to see their larger cabins that have 4 Bedrooms 4 baths full kitchen etc. ALSO a LARGE,VERY Large Pavillion with HUGE BBQ pitts for a group BBQ..THEY SUPPLY THE WOOD FOR THE PITTS!!! I am in no way affilliated with them I just like to share a great place when I find one..I will be back there again. Tom
