problems removing lower cowling
ahoutzer replied to geep's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
It does not come out (unless you break it). It just turns a quarter or half turn to loosen it.- 6 replies

Quote from Squidley: I would guess that I have well over 100K on all the bikes combined. 100K what? Dollars? I've only owned one '06, and have 80K *miles* on it.

Second gens have 32mm carbs, not 28.

GPS Mounting & Connecting on an RSTD
ahoutzer replied to sadicarnot's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
The Zumo 660 cradle has the wiring hardwired into it, unlike the Zumo 550. One cable (several wires under a single sheath) comes from the 660's cradle and eventually splits into four wires: Power & ground, Aux sound out, Mic sound in and a special connector for an optional traffic info receiver. The power wire is actually a cable with two wires that also split later: hot and ground. My advice is to leave the cable as is. It's pretty neatly packaged, so not a problem. Just tuck any unused wires away. Some day you may be glad that you didn't cripple the unit by cutting off what you didn't want today. -
I would ride the RSV.

Rear End Creaking
ahoutzer replied to sadicarnot's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
... And the Royal Star Venture DOES have a clock. -
I don't think the readings on a light meter really matter. It seems to me that everything that is truly important is in the eye of the beholder. The meter may say that one bulb puts out more than the other, but the color and the pattern make the "weaker" bulb more effective. A really great headlamp should 1) make it easy to see where you are going 2) make you noticed by other drivers, day and night 3) be able to do all of this without bothering/blinding other drivers. If it could also counteract the glare of oncoming headlights pointed at me, then I would be happy to spend $100 even if I had to replace it every year!

What else, besides listening to XM radio, requires the recurring expense of a subscription? Does the weather service require paying a fee every month? Traffic service? Anything else?

Victory Cross Country.
-
If it's gonna be a V twin with less than complete touring package, I would rather consider a Victory Cross Country.

Yeah, i figured it out right after submitting my post. I was thinking of side bags because I still see some bikes with those. Side opening trunk would be okay. I never leave a passenger on the bike when I'm not on, but it is good for getting around rear seat cargo or a helmet laid there.
-
I was thinking that you meant the side bags, but you clearly said "trunk". I could go along with a side-opening trunk.
-
Why would you want a side-opening trunk? They can't be opened without everything falling out.

2008 Venture performance
ahoutzer replied to a topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Hmmm… 2 hours 38 minutes, on the other side of Atlanta, according to maps.google.com . There are probably several ventureriders closer to you than I am. Will one of them speak up? -

I see you're in Georgia -- at least you are flying the Georgia state flag on your profile. Where exactly are you? I may be nearby. -
2008 Venture performance
ahoutzer replied to a topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
A 97 Royal Star, assuming that it is near stock, has less power than the Royal Star Venture. The main reason is the air intake. The Venture has two air boxes behind the cowlings in order to let it breathe. The older Royal Stars ace less power because they can't get enough air in. -
There must be a good corn cob supply from all of that ethanol making.

Do you live in a flat, level place? It seems like you are not used to holding the brake when stopped at a red light. Where I live, nothing is flat or level, so we always have to hold the brake at any stop to avoid rolling downhill.
-
My stock Venture mufflers have had RSTD tips in them fir several years. They hold. Just drill them and use a tap and die to thread the holes.

These work.

Twice from behind, so far. The first one, after the lady knocked me down the road and while we waited for an hour for Florida Highway Patrol to arrive, the lady told me: "This just can't be my fault! I just got my license back and I've already been to defensive driving school three times -- they won't let me go again!" So I knew I was hit by one of the best. Second one was playing with her radio when she looked up and saw that traffic was stopped. My bike kept her from slamming into the Buick in front of me. I was her shock absorber. Sometimes there is nothing you can do but look up -- the Lord is there, and He knows what to do.

risers and throttle cables
ahoutzer replied to atlm's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
For one thing, it's way less complicated to put in risers than to move all of the handlebar-mounted stuff to a new set of handlebars! -
If you left a wheelbarrow in the back of your truck in such a way that it could fall out -- such as leaving the tailgate down -- then you better delete this thread. If the surviving family of the guy who was riding his motorcycle behind you find out that you wrote this, then someone might indeed shoot you.

If I had that money after I already had my RSV free and clear (as I do) then I would add another bike, and that would be a Victory Cross Country, using the rest of the money to accessorize it. No Gold Wings nor HD need apply. Mike bike has to work for transportation each and every day -- no trailer queens or once-a-month-in-summer bar hoppers for me.

I'm in Walhalla, SC just twenty miles outside of NE Ga. It's 72*F here today -- nice riding weather. If you want to come up, I have the CarbTune.
