Hey Master Chief, I've never met ya personally, but I too want to thank you for your part in remediating the Gulf devastation. I come close to shedding a tear as well when I see those poor birds and other wildlife soaked in oil. If I did'nt live so far away, I'd be right there with ya. Remember that you are numero uno and pace yourself. God Bless Top

It has happened two or three times now. I'll just be riding along and look down at my Zumo 550 and notice the screen has locked up. I can't even turn the thing off when that happens. To fix the problem I must remove the unit from it's mount then remove the battery. Once the battery is reinstalled it works like new. WTH! Anyone experience this? What's the fix? or should I just get a 660?

How hard is it to match
MasterGuns replied to Cruser's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Check out the pics of my 86 in my User stuff. When I first purchased this bike, both the lower fairings, the lower nose piece and the abs part attached just under the headlight all need replaced due to the PO abuse. I had a few of the parts on-hand and what I didn't have already I picked up on fleabay. I took the entire bike to a local body repair shop that has done body work on my daughters car "FIVE" times (at that time; now 7 times) and had their paint guy mix to match. He mixed the base coat as close as he said he could get it and I ran with that. I painted all those parts myself with equipment Ii have in my garage. Check out the pics. Bet you can't tell and you still couldn't see any dif even if you were next to the parts in bright sun light. So, depending on the skills of the mixing dude, yes the paint can be matched. Even if you use the mixing instructions contained on this website, the shade of the new paint may not match exactly the shade currently on the bike as the paint on the bike most likely may have faded somewhat over time. Good luck. A couple years back I decided to paint my brother-in-laws 83. It was so faded, I just repainted the entire bike; every plastic body part there is. I think the number of "things' was 15 or 17; can't really remember. I told him that if I was going to do the shooting, I would only shoot it jet black. Turned out absolutely marvelous. Since then, maybe two and half years, he has put only 134 miles on the thing. Wish he'd sell it to me. Again, good luck. -

Adding a CD Changer
MasterGuns replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Sounds good to me. So, how would one hookup a MP3 player without removing any of the stock components. I have one of those cassette convertors; you know the cassette-like looking device that inserts into the cassette player and the other end plugs into the MP3. But I don't like that set up because then you have the wire hanging there and atleast on a 1st Gen, you have to figure out where to put the actual player. To me this setup is not a clean looking arrangement and appears shoddy. Shoot, I may as well just purchase the special XM antenna for my Zumo 550 and mount it just like LoneStarMedic did. Then, I'd have XM satellite received through the GPS unit. Just considering all my options at this point. Thanks for the reply. -
Has anyone added a cd changer to their 1st Gen WITHOUT removing any of the stock audio stuff? I was thinking about mounting a cd changer in the trunk only if there was some way of wiring the audio into the present system without removing anything and installing it so that if I wanted, I could stilll use any of the original audio. I would just hate to ruin the OEM set-up. Has anyone performed this already? If you have, I'd love to hear from ya.

Coolant drain plug

Mine was leaking a drop or two every so often after reinstalling it. I just removed the crush washer and smoothed it up on both sides using 400 grit, applied a small amount of gasket sealer, and reinstalled it. No more leak even when really hot. I did however order a new washer and will use it if it ever starts leaking again. -

I've read that sales are so bad right now for Yamaha, the next Venture will be manufactured still with carbs and an 8 track tape.

Did I just read not to use
MasterGuns replied to Cruser's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I recently purchased a new car and I have to assume the engine was/is new also. It came from the factory with full synthetic. Owners manual says no break in required. I AM CONFUSED. -
I happened to stumble across a Venture Touring Society (VTS) pin this weekend; kinda unique pin and organzation. I am curious, was this organization once VTS or what? If not, whatever happened to VTS? Anyone know?

Idle Question...simple?
MasterGuns replied to tpalshadow's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yes, the idle must be set when the motor is at normal operating temp otherwise you get what you have. When starting cold you will need the choke to keep it running. These things are notoriously very cold blooded. Good luck. -
OK, accumulating too much stuff around here. I have two extra motors so I am offering up one almost complete motor off an 86. It is minus the carbs and starter. It is still installed in the frame cradle. So, if anyone would like this motor and is willing to pay shipping, it's yours. When I purchased it a couple years back, according to the fellow down Houston way that sold it to me, it ran when the bike was completely disassembled. It looks awful but it's all there and the covers can be cleaned up and recoated.

MasterGuns replied to Cruser's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Adding synthetic in an older motor is a bunch of bunk. I've added fully synthetic in an 83, 86 and 88 in the last couple years. All three motors I doubt ever had synthetic. No leaks at all. Now then the 86 I now have I purchased with an oil leak, installed a new gear indicator switch and at the same time switched it over to Amsoil fully synthetic. No leaks. IMHO, if a motor is going to leak oil, it will leak regardless of the oil used. -
Turn the airbox upside down and check out the little tags on each of the boots. Those tags are suppose to be lined up in between the two lines mounded into the bottom of the actual airbox. Once all four are lined up, installation should be fairly easy. Still a struggle sometimes though.

Mike, I am going with y'all. So I will wait for your brother to call me about our meeting locations somewhere along 35W South. Looking forward to the ride. Takin the VR; don't like cleaning up the Ultra.

Thought Goldwings also came with a seat cooler, hot and cold running water and grey/black water storage tanks.

I will be asking the slave drivers here at work for Friday off. Will advise. I am sure the uppers will say go ahead with Friday off; I just leaving for a day and putting all my work load onto the other three specialist in my department. Oh well, life's a b..... then you die. I'll be torn between taking the 86 VR or my other scooter.
