"I have noticed that everyone who owns a Harley doesn't have an attitude and everyone who has an attitude doesn't have a Harley." Well stated. I also belong to a couple Harley forums where all those members know or have access for finding out I also have a Yamaha. Do you think any of them give me a hard time? Anyway, great post.

Needle Shim Mod

I got this mileage while on an interstate highway running no slower than 75 but mostly even higher. Is 32 mpg still to low? Just curious. I's sure that if I were to run slower my mpg would increase. -
As many of you have figued out by reading my posts, I have both an older, some of you may even say antique, lst edition. My first VR was a 1986 VR and I simply loved the bike. So, I finally found another keeper 86 and she looks almost like new and now that it has a newer, non-knocking motor from an 89, it is even closer to perfect. I also have an 01 Ultra Classis HD 1450 that is equally as good looking. It has more chrome on it than most Ultras and the sound is absolutely awesome with the Vance and Hines true duals and monster duals. So, whenever I need to go to the Yamaha dealer to buy parts, I make it a point to ride the Harley and when I go to a HD dealer I make it a point to take my 86 Yamaha. The Yamaha dealer treats me like crap, are extremely smobish, and won't even say hello. Even if I am walking around their new bikes they just let me look alone. On the other hand, the HD guys seem very interested in my "rice burner", come out to have a look see; ask questions about it and some even compliment it. I have even told them that my 24 year old "rice burner" would out run anything they have, with the exception of the V-Rod and they just take that in stride and joke back. They all respect my ownership of a Yamaha, are very friendly and treat me like a customer not an enemy. Basically, I haven't found a Yamaha dealer in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex I have any respect for and worthy of my hard earned bucks should I ever decide to buy new. Basically I think they're all jerks and not worth of my business. With the attitudes these fools display, no wonder Yamaha is experiencing hard times.

Needle Shim Mod
MasterGuns replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well, just got back from the garage where I reinstalled the OEM needle shims. Tried everything to get things to smooth out with no backing firing, popping at idle and the hesitation when hitting the throttle from medium to hard. Moved the idle mixture screws all the way out to over 4 turns. Resynced the carbs, which were almost perfect anyway, and still no improvement. Heck, I could even feel an increase in engine heat just sitting next to the running motor due to much leaned out fuel mixture. So, rather than mess with it by taking each valve assembly apart to add additional washers to move the needles outward little by little, I decided to leave well enough alone and just reinstalled the stock shims. Did so and she loves them. No hesitation, no popping and backfiring. Oh well, I have to settle with the 32mpg. -
I can only afford one Harley but six; you are kiddin. But if one had to put 540,080 km on a bike (337550 miles) and still have a rebuildable motor afterwards, you'd have to have a Harley. Boy am I brave putting that statement here. Hey guys and gals, I also have a Yamaha so please.....

Needle Shim Mod
MasterGuns replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Shoot, I'm not worried about anything not working properly things just need to be tweeked some I suppose. Glad to have gotten these shims from ya. Thanks again. Anyway, I will do as you say and move the idle mixture screws out 1/4 turn CCW and see what happens. Don't really recall where they are now. I think three are at 2 1/4 and number four is at 3 already; why (????). Diaphrams are almost brand new and still looked perfect last night so that is not a concern. I will also sync the carbs again; I just synced them about 10 days back. If still not satisfied after all than I may add a #4 washer to your spacers and see if I get any improvement. Thanks Earl and I will post my results. -

I think that little tab on the OEM spacer recessess into a hole down inside the slide so I didn't count that. Am I screwed up here? -
Oooooh - Rahhhhhhhhhh. God Bless "The Corps".

Before installing the needle shim mod my mileage was somewhere right around 32 mpg. That mileage was determined by filling my tank nearly to the brim, riding at 70 - 75 mph and until my fuel warning light came on; filled up to the brim again, and did it all again; four times. So, I've had these shaved down vinyl shims, purchased here on this site, for some time and decided just tonight to install them. It's done! Heck I am not even sure how much difference there is between the new shims and the stock one. I know stock is .112 in. At idle, of course there would be no difference. Initially it does not seem to rev as quickly as it did before the mod; seems to be too lean now, stutters and bawgs some. Inserting three fingers in the air intate improves its ability to rev. Anyway, I will take it out on the road and run a few tanks through it and report back how this mod affects its mileage and performance. Hope this was worth the time involved working in a garage at 105 degrees. Oh, all the evaluating will be minus the plastic just in case I have to go back to stock.

I served over thirty years in the good ole Marine Corps and well over 9 years at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, 29 Palms, Ca better known as MCAGCC. Many times my entire unit had to "hump" well over 25 miles in under 8 hours to pass and what was called a Marine Corp Combat Readiness Evaluation. All we had to drink was water and water is mother natures natural ingredient for getting and remaining hydrated. Gatorade and the like is NOT as good as water as the stuff has too much sugar and other additives. All one needs is water and maybe a little salt as salt has a water retention effect. The 25 mile plus forced marches was conducted sometimes under a "black flag" conditions. Black flags meant no grab a$$ing physical training but a MCRES was mandatory training. One time the temp was 119 degrees and we all remained hydrated with only water. I can't remember exactly, but that time I probably drank over a gallon of water an hour and never had to make a "head call". Water is what the Marine Corps runs on; oh yeah and bunches and bunches and bunches of Class V. When I deployed to Mogadishu, Somalia (just before the Army incident, Black Hawk Down, I was drinking well over 5 gallons of water a day. My canteen was a five gallon water can. I had to go to sick bay because urinating got fairly painful. I was told I had to drink more water. So much for military medicine.

Maybe I should buy my ex a real fast top heavy bike; maybe a Triumph Rocket.

Fuel Milage
MasterGuns replied to GilbertHall's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The above response leads me to this question.....Are the adjustable needles from an 83, 84 and 85 (I assume all had adjustable needles) interchangeable with the needles in an 86-93. Just curious. Sure would be easier adjusting the needles than adding then reducing washers and other improvised ways of adjusting fuel intake levels on the 86-93. Probably been asked before but what the heck. -
Neither, it was either the Federalist Party or the Tolerlists, maybe the Whigs!

Sitting in the pouring rain reminds me of my days in the Nam also. Great tribute to a great bunch of lost buddies that I remember so fondly and even after all these years still cry when remembering how they were lost and why. I have only visited the "Wall" twice since and made a complete spectical of myself both times. Thank you so much. These type tributes make me look back on my days served "in country" and I still don't fully understand. Semper Fi

Coolant Leak
MasterGuns replied to tpalshadow's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
That's right; for normal operation it should be turned to the 2 o'clock position. And anytime that darn drain cock on one of my lst editions leaked, it was just after draining the coolant and having to turn it to the drain position; in other words, having to mess with it at all. I've had to replace the o'ring in just about every 1st edition I've owned. I just take the old one to Ace and match it up. I don't think they had an exact match so I bought the next largest size (which was hardly noticeable), installed that puppy and no more leaks. Cost me 30 cents I think. -

MasterGuns replied to tpalshadow's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I was thinking you replaced the o'ring in the "DRAIN COCK"; been a long day so far. Anyway, bet ya it IS the drain cock leaking. Like I said, I'd remove the nose fairing (the same fairing covering the oil filter assy), run the bike until it is hot enough to do the leaking thing, park it and see if the drips aren't coming from the drain cock. There is a little o'ring in there that craps out over time and it may just be a coincidence in your situation, but that might be your problem. If it is, it is an easy fix. -

MasterGuns replied to tpalshadow's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
What exactly did you replace inside the drain plug; a gasket or an O'ring? Should had been the later. Also the drain plug when looking straight at it should be turned to the 2 o'clock position. I also had a leaky drain plug and even though it was an extremely slight leak, the drop or drops would accumulate on the garage floor sometimes in a different orientation to the drain plug. What I am saying is, are you sure the leak still isn't your drain plug? Remove your nose piece, run it until hot, park it and take a look see. -
does anyone use wetter than wet in there bikes?
MasterGuns replied to waterbug's topic in Watering Hole
Living in hot a-- Texas, I had been looking at any way to get three of my last lst editions to run cooler in the summer. So, I tried the Redline water wetter or wetter than water (whatever that stuff is called). Mixed it according to the manufacturers recommendations. My opinion....BS. It is just another way to get more of your money. Spend away if you want but the best way to ensure your bikes cooling system is operating at optimum performance is to ensure the system is completely free of any scale buildup and that the radiator is not blocked by small debris getting lodged in between the cooling fins. Just my 2 cents. -
Sure, it is the Phalanx Gun System positioned at 11 o'clock from the what I think may be a 5 incher. Don't know much about Naval Gun Fire, otherthan I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end.
