  1. I'm posting this for a friend. 83 venture standard. Bike was not charging the battery. Tested the stator, it was grounded, only getting 5 amps ac, average on all 3 sets of white wires, tested the r/r, it also tested bad with open diodes. He installed a new stator and r/r, both ricks motorsports parts, however he got them from dennis kirk. I don't know if they are the same parts that Rick on this website sells or not. The bike is still not charging. Volt meter reads 12 volts not running, when it is running, it drops to 11.5 volts. Even when running up to 2000 rpms, battery voltage does not go above 12 volts. Just for information; he has a gel battery. I thought I read somewhere that gel batteries do not charge like flooded batteries. Does anyone here have any ideas or something else to look for?
  2. Dose anyone use a steering damper on their trike? The steering on the trike I'm building seems loose(easy to turn) thinking it may give me a wobble at speed or in turns. Have not road tested yet, working on fairings & paint Thinking I may need a damper.Looking for ideas. Thanks (work in progress) :canada:
  3. Check out the latest in motorcycle safety. It is in another language but with subtitles. I don't think they tested it enough before making this video. http://biertijd.com/mediaplayer/?itemid=21816
  4. Working on my 83 venture I've been keeping an eye out for potential deals on ebay. Last week I saw that a CB from a 1300 with a high bid of only $15 with only 1 day left. So I put in a bid and got it for $18, With shipping it was a grand total of $33.20 Got it yesterday and tested it today on my dad's bike to make sure it wasn't a lemon, no problems! Now I just have to put in all the wiring on my bike. So I can actually use it.
  5. :soapbox:From a thread here I purchased the HID head light kit from a manufacturer in Canada. This was a plug and play easy install. Before I putit all back together I tried and it worked as promised. Then testing again and all was fine. When secured all wiring I tested again and nothing. I hear the igniter but no light. I checked all wiring and all tested fine. Tested again a nothing. No ignitor buzz or light. So I took it all off. Any clues, suggestion other than returning it. Thanks:confused24:
  6. A friend of mine that shares an interest in handguns shot this to me yesterday. Made me cringe a bit. I've seen a couple of ammo mishaps before but this had to be a close call for the shooter. A guy came into the PD the other day to ask a favor. He had a S&W 629 (44 Mag.) that he wanted to dispose of after a mishap at the range. He said there was a loud bang when he tested his new ammo, (Chinese made), and the gun smacked him in the forehead, leaving a nice gash. When the tweety birds cleared, this is what he saw ... Bet he never uses Chinese made Ammo again!
  7. If you test thre wire 0 ohms it is copper. In the end cap there is a resistor of some kind. can't be tested with o meter. How do you know if it is good or not.?
  8. There's a few of you who have read/replied to my thread regarding my '89 backfiring a lot.http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=45485 I posted a little bit about the no spark condition on the right rear cylinder. I tested the coils, and are within limits, all three other spark plugs work just fine. I tested the spark plug wire installed on the coil and the plug cap removed - got good resistance. I then tested the wire with the cap on and the cap by itself and was having a hard time getting a good resistance value. I had to turn the multimeter onto 200K ohms to get a reading. I'm thinking that the spark plug cap may be the problem. Anyone have other ideas? I've got new wires/caps on order. Hopefully that'll fix the the problem! Has anyone had a no-spark condition before from the spark plug cap or the spark plug wires?
  9. I am happy to report that the RSV tip over bars work just fine:thumbsup: Tested them this morning in the local coffee shop parking lot. Newest member IDMBC
  10. 89 Venture Royale... I've lost my brake lights. I tracked the problem to a relay behind the headlight. This relay is marked: 1NL OMRON 10Y8D5 It is a metal cased relay with 4 spade connectors in the connector housing. Can anyone help me identify which part to order? There are two relays with this marking, one on the left and one on the right. I have been unable to determine what part this is. The parts fische only shows two different devices in that area of the fairing (Electrical 1, items 9 and 12). One is noted as "Relay Assembly for side stand", the other just as "Relay ASSY". I did verify that this is the problem part by swapping the relays and the brake lights worked. Swapped back and no brake lights. Since the relay wasn't working I took it apart carefully and found a small deposit between the contacts. I cleaned that out and tested the relay in the bike again. The brake lights worked! I epoxied the relay back into it's cover, tested and the lights still worked, so I reassembled the bike. One last test... no brake lights. Of course, our local dealership has no parts in stock and they can't figure out which relay to order from the parts fische.
  11. Hey guys, hope you all had a great week! Did all the testing of components, cleaning cable ends, ETC, we discussed earlier last week. Everything checked out! I tested the battery with a standard auto battery load tester, it tested good. SO, after everything else checked out, I took the battery to a friend that has a truck shop and put a 24 volt load test on it, the meter dropped to BAD in 2 seconds. He thought it was a intermittent short in the battery and it took the extra heat to finally burn it into?.?.?... What ever, I put in a Odessey PC 680 and it fired off like new again! Drove all over town and made several stops, NO problems!! Battery Outfitters in Rogers, Arkansas is a dealer if anyone close to them ($95 out the door). Most dealers charge about $121 delivered to your door. Thanks again for all the help on my problem!!! Gary C Ft Smith, Ark area
