  1. A good friend of mine that rides an 03 Venture got rid of his whine too. She is now back living with her mom and dad.
  2. I used to disarm these things; I was an EOD Tech in my younger days (and only for one tour) and perceive this as a "boobytrap". And thanks for the thanks.
  3. I should have clarified "bikes". Metric bikes are pretty much totally made in Asia but not my brand new 10 vehicle (auto or bike). And, you're right, I use to walk everywhere when I was in Nam, have never been butt naked nor starving. I graduated up to replacing my combat boots with civie shoes and buy whatever the heck I want; just like you I assume. If anyone has earned that, I have. Have a good one.
  4. I own both and ride the heck out of both. I prefer my Ultra. Except while idling, it is smoother, easier to maintain and is a heck of a lot better looking. Everyone should buy American anyway.
  5. Ok all you experts; I have a couple questions concerning replacing the motor in my 86 with a motor from an 89. I am of the opinion that the original motor either has a piston slap or some other type of subtle knocking noise only on deceleration. I am quite certain the knocking is there when riding but due to other noise I cannot distinguish this particular knocking from all the other noise. The knocking noise is quite noticeable when the motor is at normal operating temp and when still. Doesn't matter if the tranny is in neutral or any other gear. Anyway, the bike is in otherwise outstanding condition and looks almost new. So, I found another really good motor from an 89 that will be going in (41K miles). Here is my question: 1) Since the replacement is coming without carbs, will the carbs from the 86 mount and operate without any issues? I think they will but would like to hear other opinions. 2) I believe all the electronics are the same but what other concerns or issues might I be overlooking? Thanks for the advise.
  6. My number is listed in my details or PM me.
  7. Thirty plus years of continuous "active duty" service. Needless to say how I feel about this country.
  8. Ouuuuu-raahhhhh
  9. What do you mean by "flat"? And is shifting affected? If so, how?
  10. I have the same pieces you have but also the socks and pants liner. My Ultra handles the load for all this stuff without issue. However, the VR (86) does. I'd be careful with too much load on the VR. The Ultra has a 48 amp charging system while the VR (lst editions anyway) have only 28. Without any accessories, the VR is using about 15 amps of juice. I wired in a switch so as to be able to turn off the headlight. I wouldnt have any problem doing so during daylight hours and if out in the boonies. It saves about 5 or 6 of those amps for other things. Some will disagree with my switching the headlight off, but if I was on the VR and about to freeze in sub-freezing temps and had all the warming gear on and turned up, I'd wouldn't hesitate to switch off the headlight conditions permitting.
  11. I have a brand new set of Macs that I recently purchased from Condor. I haven't installed them because the bike has issues that is more important that adding these pipes. I will be picking up another motor this weekend and have to work on getting that swapped out sometimes in the next 4 or 5 months. So, the Macs are available for what I paid Condor + shipping. Interested?
  12. Roger That! Too bad Dairy Queen won't step up.
  13. I agree. Not all HD riders are intimidated by 100 hp.
  14. And what do you say about those that have both?
  15. Nah, all this HD bashing has got me thinking I should just sell the Yamaha and be done with it. I looked at the 2010 CVO Ultra Classic SE 110 and man, oh man, what a beautiful piece of mostly American engineering. This sled is right at 40k and I would get it right now but I might be single shortly thereafter; still in the discussion phase with the boss. I may have to decide on the master bedroom or the motorhome shortly. All I can say is that I am having difficulty sleeping with this thing on my mind. People could bash me all they want. But for the time being, the Venture is tango uniform with shifting issues. I am just tired trying to figure out why it shifts so hard. But even in the sad shape this 86 is in, it will still run rings around any 2d Edition and you know it.
  16. I tried pretty hard to post something concerning the subject of this thread but decided I'd rather go ride my Ultra. See ya.
  17. Just FYI, I am heading out on a 200 mile ride this weekend; may be in short sleeves. Plenty of room down here in the United State of Texas, come on down.
  18. Did my fist ride with the warming gear I purchased from Cozy Winters. The set I picked up consists of a jacket and pants liner, gloves and socks. I also bought the dual troller and the cigarette plug adapter. The bike I hooked all this stuff up to is an 86 VR. Great stuff. Rode in 49 degree weather and started to sweat. Turned it way, way down. Can't wait to see if it keeps me warm when the temp is in the lower 30s. Great investment.
  19. Do you have any idea how many of us own Harleys? Gotta have something to spend money on besides our Yamahas. And dew rags are cheap even though I won't/can't wear one.
  20. Hey Bob, absolutely great mod. I will install the same thing as soon as possible. Glad you figured out how to do this without activating the Warning Light. Now, if I ever need to save juice for something else, like my warming jacket, gloves, etc.; am riding out in the middle of nowhere during the day, I will just turn off the headlight. Thanks
  21. Bump
  22. Just curious if any member uses electrically heated riding gear on A lst Edition? I have had a full set of Warm Gear sold by Cozy Winters for some time but have never used it. I am planning on a Big Bend Texas ride next month and I expect the weather will get pretty darn cool, low to mid thirties and would like to use at least part of the gear. I was thinking bout using only the jacket (100 watts) and the socks (40 watts) and am not sure that would over tax the charging system of a lst Gen. Since most riding will be during day light hours, no other electrical accessories will be used (driving lights). Any advise?
  23. Carl, Thanks again for the info. I am covering all bases. I have both the m/c push rod and the brass fitting on order. I recently rebuilt the m/c but didn't replace those parts but will do so. I also have all the steel clutch plates on order and will replace my originals as soon as they come in. When everything is said and done to this thing, I will have replaced the following: Both clutch friction and metal plates Clutch diaphram spring Slave cylinder Rebuilt the m/c Replaced the m/c push rod and brass fitting I have bled the system till I was blue in the face using a Mitivac. There is no air in the lines. If shifting isn't improved after all that, I quit. But here is something I just remembered. This VR shifts like butter until it gets hot. Perhaps the problem is not with the clutch or the hydralic clutch. Maybe the dogs are overly worn. Hummmm!
  24. Thanks for the info Carl. So you have no free play at all, huh? If you have absolutely no free play (measured from the center of the knob on the shift lever at FULL extension to when the lever starts to pressurize the m/c), then perhaps my shifting issue is the m/c or the lever mechanism. The 1/2 in free play in my lever may be causing the clutch to not fully disengage.
  25. I have a good running (but hard shifting) 86 VR and a Harley Ultra. Both are really great machines but I prefer the looks of the VR over the HD. I ride the Ultra occassionally and only when I know I won't need to go fast, leave rubber marks or do a wheelie. The HD is really only suitable for Dairy Queen runs. And I also hate dew rags and tattoos one can spot from orbit. Some HD riders simply look ridiculous in their riding garb.
