removing collector
MasterGuns replied to chocking's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I removed mine without removing the rear exhaust pipes from the heads. Just loosen the clamps where the rear exhaust pipes connect to the collector. There are two bolts holding the collector under the engine. Once these two bolts are removed, the front pipes removed entirely (from the heads and the collector), the mufflers are removed, prying the collector down and it can be easily removed. Maybe with a few curse words and a break or two. I don't think the rear exhaust pipes can even be entirely removed without removing the engine first. There is a way, but I have to explain how I did so in another post. -
Benelli once manufactured an in-line 6 also. check it out.

are mounted on bike frames. Some have over 400 hp. So why not a 2 liter V-6. I agree with Randya.

Where have all the 1st gens gone?
MasterGuns replied to 91nwl's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
As far as I (a 1st Gen owner), and an unknown 2nd Gen owner that thinks I don't know who he was/is, the 1st gen is not only faster in a straight away from a dead stop or a 5 mph roll off, or a 50 mph roll-on, but in the twisties as well. We sure did have a lot of fun at the Intl Rally at The Hub, and for some, settled this 1st Gen/2nd Gen thing. So there..... -

3 is perfect; 1 is close, and 2/4 too hot. I agree with timgray, the carbs are out of sync.- 5 replies

I wasted my bucks and bought a bottle and added it per the directions. I didn't add it to my VR but rather added to it two of my autos that have temp guages and not idiot lights. If either ran cooler it was soon minimal it was not noticeable at all. IMHO this is just another gimmick to seperate you from your hard earned cash. -
Count me in for a "cooler" time of year.

West Virginia didn't have a constitutional right to sucede; that is why it's still a state. Big, big difference.
-
and, Texas is the only state that has the right to sucede from the rest of the states and some day may. can't wait. And, for all you northerners way up there, we can ride all year long. So, there.....

May be on a Harley #2
MasterGuns replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
#2 (front left) carb air valve (diaphragm) wasn't working. Randya thought it was a vacumm leak and he was right. While tearing this thing apart and inspecting parts as I removed them, I couldn't find anything that looked faulty so all I could do was reassemble everything being very particular as I went. To make a long story short, the inside bolt hole on the #2 intake was striped which made tightening that manifold impossible. Just another thing the PO failed to mention as I am sure he knew about it. Fortunately those holes are much deeper than the OEM allen head so the fix was to use a longer allen head, about 3/8 inches longer. All I know it that it worked for me and all is well. The once dead air valve is now as active as all the others. Carbs synced just fine. All I have to do is take it for a ride tomorrow after work and find out how she runs now. I think it will run like never before since the dead valve hasn't operated since I've had her. I did do a test spray of ether around all the manifolds with no reaction; a very good thing. A great big "Thank You" to all you guys who provided input and advise. This is great organization. -

Pulled the carbs off last evening expecting to find obvious evidence of a vacuum leak with the #2 intake manifold but as far as I can tell, it, as well as the other three rubber intake manifolds appear to be fairly new; no cracks at all, shiny, smooth and in really great condition. I question the reliability of the seal between the head intake port and each of the manifolds because the o-ring seemed to me to be a whimpsy excuse for an o-ring. I suspect the PO "improvised" on the o-rings by replacing the OEMs with something he picked up at a local hardward store. I will know more once I can compare the o-rings I removed to the new OEMs I will be picking up from mother Yamaha early this after noon. To ensure a good seal, has anyone used some sort of sealer on these 0-rings? I would think whatever is used would have to be able to withstand higher than normal heat. Does anyone think Yamabond could work? What else might someone recommend? This is a lot of work and I just don't want to tear these doggone carbs off again. What really gives me fits is reconnecting the throttle cables; choke is too easy. Hope all this effort pays off and I don't have anymore vacuum leaks when fully reassembled. Thanks for reading and any advise thrown this way concerning sealer would be highly appreciated. Thanks Herb -

Hey Squeeze, Thanks for the input. But with Randya's advise last night, I finally think I have found the problem. I sprayed starting fluid in and around the intake manifolds of #2 and low and behold the rpms went up quite a bit.....VACUUM LEAK. I also checked all the others joining points between the bottom of the carbs and the manifolds and the heads with "positive" results as well. Only number 3 seemed to be tight with no vacuum leaks. Since this is a fairly "new to me" 86, I think the PO had the carbs and manifolds off and either didn't install the o-rings or used defective o-rings. Who knows, until I pull the off and inspect the manifolds, what else may be wrong. My only problems is getting the parts quickly in order to use this VR for the rally. Otherwise....... -

What are the runners? Thanks -
Good evening all. Just came in from the garage where I was beating myself up with this problem, i.e, #2 air valve not responding to throttle whatsoever. I ensured the vacuum port was clean and clear by squirting B12 through the port and it exiting from the top of the carb; then used moderately high pressure air with the same results. The diaphragm is good, no holes, no tears and attached with no separation. The small oring was/is in place. Carbs sync perfectly creating 24 mb of hg at idle (1050 rpm). Plug is firing. Good vacuum at the boost sensor vacuum port on the carb manifold. Everything checks out except for a dead air valve. What the h....! I have two more nights to figure this out or I am left with taking my Ultra to the rally. I really won't mind doing that but I would much rather ride the Venture because it is a much better bike. Any more ideas. H______E_______L________P!!!!

I am ever so anxious to get out here and head home to do everything you guys instruct. I know the slider isn't stuck as I could move it carefully using a screwdriver. Forgot to mention that. I will also use carb cleaner to clean up the vacuum port in that carb. What would be the symptom of a stuck or inoperable slider in only one carb? How would it affect performance? Would it be a subtle effect or drastically reduce performance? -
Just recently my 86 VR has taken ill. She was running real well and strong until just last week. All of a sudden she seems to be lacking in power throughout the rpm range. I have synced the carbs and they are right on. Suspecting that the boost sensor may have crapped out, I checked the vacuum at #2 and it is good and when reconnecting the vacuum hose to the boost sensor, the rpms pick up. That, as far as I know is a sign the sensor is working and advancing the timing. New plugs installed not too long ago and appear to burning well. New wires and caps as well. Just last night, I pulled the air box top and filter and started the motor. Number two slider (the carb/cylinder providing vacuum to the boost sensor) is not bouncing/moving at all. I will have to pull that carb cover to check out what may be going on or what isn't going on and hopefully I can resolve the problem; quickly. What would be the symptom of one slide not working? I checked out the diaphragms not too long ago and all checked out; no holes, old but no holes. Perhaps the vacuum port that directs vacuum to this slider has somehow gotten clogged or something. Nbr 2 is firing because the pipe gets hot immediately after starting cold. If I can't figure this out quickly, I will still be at the rally; however, I will be on my Ultra. Any ideas or advice about a faulty slide.... I am all ears.

Improving gas mileage...
MasterGuns replied to 5bikes's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
After running with the three #4 washer mod for about 10 days, tonight I finally pulled a plug and it appeared to be burning way lean. So, if I was to add a 4th washer, I would darn near be back to where I started. Rather, I reinstalled the OEM plastic spacers, reassembled everything, threw my Carbtune on for a quick sync. I will take her on a good long ride tomorrow to check things out further but I am sure she is now fine. I am going to check my mileage and see how much it has dropped, if any. -

Defective Radiator Cap????
MasterGuns replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
That was the first thing I checked and it (the fan) works fine. Ah, 1st Ed fans do not continue to operate once the engine is shut down. I've owned 1st Gens since 1986 and this is the first one that did this boiling over thing, and perhaps the weather aroung here (107+) most likely had a lot to do with this but I have solved the issue. No more boil over.
