There use to be program on tv that your garage reminds me of. It was Sanford and somebody else. Can't really remember.

I have removed the stator cover just to reseal the two rubber gromets (stator and pickup coils) that from time to time (huh) leak. For those of you that have had to (for whatever reason) remove the stator cover, what is the best, and I do mean best, sealer to use on those pesky gromets? Any advise will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I use to say quitting smoking was easy, heck I have done it 100 times. But in 1984 I decided I had better give it up or suffer the consequences but I had to find something to do that I couldn't be smoking while doing it. After some thought, the only thing I had ever done and couldn't do while smoking was running. So, everytime the craving was at a high level, I ran three miles. I was on active duty in the Marine Corps, so running wasn't a big deal but for the first two or three weeks, I was running 21 or more miles a day. But, it worked and I haven't had a smoke since. Here at work I know colleagues paying over $6 a pack. What a bunch of absolute morons. Such a high cost to pay to ensure you have serious health problems. For all you that smoke.....get smart.

Just got off the phone with mother Yamaha ordering the parts I intend to replace. Everything was available except for the Neutral Switch. Atleast the oil seal for the neutral switch is still available. Five to 7 days to get them here; what a bummer, was looking forward to getting this done this weekend. Oh well.....! I will try to put together a pictorial step-by-step using my limited skill and knowledge of this project and post them here for those of you with bikes currently experiencing the same leakage. Ok, I intend on only going in there one time. So I am ordering the follow stuff and hopefully all these items can be replaced while I have her opened up from the middle gear area. If my plan is not going to work, please let me know. I am going to remove the middle gear cover and the slave cylinder. I understand getting the slave cylinder out is not that easy but doable. Then I am planning on replacing: 1) the neutral switch and it's O-ring 2) the shift shaft's oil seal and if possible 3) the clutch rod oil seal. Can all this be accomplished readily simply by opening up this area and not by removing the entire engine or something really drastic like that? If so, I will not even attempt it and will have to get someone with a lot more patience that me and a lot more skill. Thanks

Thanks for the reply Rocket. As a matter of face, while idling and the Neutral light is on, if I rev the engine, the Neutral light flickers on and off. Perhaps your thought is right on. I guess I'll have to pull the middle gear cover and check it out. Once I do pull the middle gear cover, where exactly is the neutral switch and can the O ring be easily replaced by just removing the three screws? Thanks

Ok here goes. The 86 VR I just brought home a few days back has a minor oil leak. Minor; but still a leak and leaks can get worse. The leak is somewhere in behind and between the stator cover and the main gear cover. Isnt the stator gromet and isn't the main gear cover gasket; somewhere further in I believe. What is back in there that can leak oil? Can the slave cylinder leak oil; clutch rod???? Any help and/or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I just used standard paint remover when I restored the engine cases on my 88. Once I polished them out, I used clear high heat engine paint. Turned out really nice.

My Harley's New Garage Bud
MasterGuns replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Speedo and PO says 24.8k. She looks great and the engine is tight with no noise whatsoever. Even the cases aren't blemished and peeling, the compression is stock and had a large accumulation of built up dust in the nooks and crannies of the motor that the fella that only had it for 6 weeks before me didn't clean. I could tell right away by his driving light installation that he wasn't too keen on doing things right. It is too early for me to believe the 24.8k but so far the evidence is pointing towards being accurate. -
The newest occupant in my garage is an 86 lst Edition. She is really clean and when I rode it before making payment to the PO, she ran great without a miss whatsoever. Trailered it home and cleaned it up a bit and now she is poping like crazy. He said he had it only three weeks and the party he got it from supposedly had it in storage for 13 years. Had to go through it somewhat but I donot believe removing the carbs for a thorough cleaning was part of the de-moth balling. I am wondering if that isn't the problem. I havent had it long enough to ever register here in Texas. So as soon as I have it registered, I will fill the tank with some new fuel, add a can of Sea Foam and take her out for some fresh air. Wish me luck. Since everyone likes pics..... Masterguns

Not too long ago, I became affected by some sort of a dumb bug and thought I'd rather ride a Harley. So, I sold my 88 VR and added lots of dollars to that and bought a really nice Ultra Classic. After spending several thousand bucks in chrome and other goodies, I just couldn't forget my sweet 88 that I had darn near brought it back to a pristine conditiion both in appearance and performance. I sure do miss riding and owning a first edition. I even test rode a couple second editions and found their appearance to be too much like a harley wantabe (not in performance nor reliability) but looks was enough to turn me off. So, in a couple of hours I am heading out to pick up an 86 Venture Royale that has just been de-moth balled after 13 years in storage and has less than 25k original miles. Has had all the fluids changed, new battery, new tires, carbs gone through and according to the seller, runs and looks like the day it was made. All electronics work and the pics are awesome. If everything the owner is telling me is right on, I hope to come back with a replacement for my lost baby, where ever she is now. I will never be disloyal again. I AM ALMOST BACK. LOOK OUT. More to follow.:173:

I ride a Harley and would never join HOG. Too much crap to deal with. And when riding I don't wave at anyone and couldn't GAD what others are riding. I dislike everyone equally.

Freebird, The benefits quitting are endless in health issues alone. There are many other benefits as you have mentioned. Just last week the government funded provided health care on 4 mil children by increasing the tax .62 cents on one pack. They aren't through yet. So you must be successful in your quitting for all these reasons. I went from being a two packer to zero clean back in 1984; yep, cold turkey. After about two weeks you will take on the atittude "I've gone two weeks without one, I can't have one now". You'll make it. You must have faith in yourself.

Heck, as last resort I have a 35000 btu kerosene heater I can use. Would only use that if and when I ran out of firewood. So much for global warming. What a joke.

I know exactly the item your looking for. I looked for three years and never could find them. I do remember a new set on Ebay about a year back that sold for 120.00. I finally gave up all together and bought a Harley. Parts for HDs are everywhere if you have the bucks. Masterguns

Cleaning out the garage
MasterGuns replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Condor, I'm sorry but the stator cover case I have is missing the chrome center piece. Good luck as those chrome covers are rare to find in excellent condition, that is unless you pick one up from the dealer for a real fancy price. If I see one, I'll be sure to let you know. Regards- 9 replies

All 1st Edition owners need to take a look at the various parts I have listed in the Classified section. I was in too much of a hurry when entering the add the first time and have now updated with prices. All prices are negotiable. Will need the room for parts storage for my new Harley. Thanks

Well gang, especially my fellow Texas Stampeders, I tried talking myself out of it but couldn't resist any longer. I have sold my 88 Venture Royale, my baby, and have taken on a more classic ride. This afternoon I will be the proud owner of an 03 Harley Davidson FLTHCUI Ultra Classic Electra Glide. At first, I wanted to keep the VR as well as the Harley but I have limited room in my three car garage for all my other vehicles and just couldn't manage two large sleds in it. I thought about throwing out one of the cages, and even considered selling my motorhome so I could park one or two of the cars under that cover, but would rather keep the rv and the other stuff in the garage. Bottom-line the VR will be gone this afternoon and in its place will be my new-to-me FLTHCUI. OMG still can't believe I am doing this. I have built this VR almost from the ground up and I will surely miss her. She has been very, very good to me, carried me thousands of trouble-free miles. I maintained her like she was born of my loins. I will welcome my new HD and I am sure she will become just as important part of me as my VR was. I hope that being a HD owner I am still welcome here in this forum. I have made some very fine friends while being a member of this forum. I would like to continue participating in various runs like next years Texas Stampede. Hope all will continue to welcome me and my new-to-me loud classy ride. God, why do I feel so bad? I am almost in tears.

Well SkyDoc, After calling 22 internet m/c tire outlets, I was finally able to locate a front from one vendor and the rear from another. I paid out the nose for these tires and I think I found the absolute last MR90 Elite II RWL (front) in the entire country. Anyway, I too, was assured they were stored properly. I just love the look of the RWL'ing as I think it is very stylish. I had excellent results with these Dunlops back in the late 80's and early 90's and can't wait to get this things mounted on my 88. I currently am running Avons front and rear and I find them just too noisy when leaning. Thanks

If I were to purchase front and rear Dunlop Elite II RWL tires, will I be getting an older tire? What I mean is now that Dunlop is making the Elite IIIs, have the Elite IIs just been sitting around someones warehouse for a very long time just waiting for some unaware person to take them off their hands. I really like RWLs and since RWLs are not available in the Elite IIIs, I am almost forced to buy Elite IIs. Too bad Avon doesn't make RWL in any on their tire models. So, I guess my question is if I buy Elite IIs am I buying new tires that are no longer made and are already very aged when I get them new? Any advise?

I will be there. Can't wait.

Thanks for asking but No, I haven't. I have been putting it off until after surgery that I have scheduled, as a matter of fact, for tomorrow morning. I will not be ridin the bike for about a month or so. But by time another month goes by, it will probably be too cold to enjoy the old gal. I printed off your recommendation as soon as I got it that day, so whenever I do get to pulling things apart, I will have your instructions. I am sure it is something simple since the only factor determining deterioration of this bike is time, not miles. TTYL (and wish me luck tomorrow)
