Headlamp warning light
MasterGuns replied to CrazyHorse's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Gearhead, Then what does it mean when the white light is not illuminated at all? On my 88 that particular light has never been on. So am I to understand there are three situations 1 - off which means what 2 - dimly lit - normal 3 - brightly lit - problem? Thanks Herb -

Marcarl, You are so right. Holding the tack at 6000 plus, dumping the clutch from a standstill and trying to keep these 800 pound beasts in a straight line without letting off the throttle is only accomplished by a very skilled Venture rider and one with a very high level of testosterone. I've been on these bikes since 86 and it still scares the hell out of me and cannot accomplish the above feat successfully very often. (But I do give it hell once in awhile). -
Headlamp warning light

I would then consider re-sodering the connections on the computer moniter. There is a very good thread on that on this site; pictures and all. Removing the computer monitor isn't really a big deal but one must have at least some basic skills at sodering. Or you could always pick up another complete dash unit on ebay. Herb -
Headlamp warning light
MasterGuns replied to CrazyHorse's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
This symptom usually points toward a faulty "reserve lighting" element. That is what I would suspect. Is both low and high beam working? If both are, I would first try replacing the reserve lighting switch. That switching device went bad on my brother-in-laws 83 and that is all we had to do. I suppose you a faulty computer moniter as well. Someone else will soon chime in with other ideas maybe. -
Fuel capacity
MasterGuns replied to CrazyHorse's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The math is pretty much right on. 4.3 gal plus the 1 you had left equals 5.3 gallons. Sounds right to me. -
Think positive; you "will" have the 88. I am leaving from work on that Friday afternoon so no sittin on your hands. Masterguns

battery or stator?
MasterGuns replied to painterman67's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Here's my two cents. In my opinion, a battery should only go bad with age or abuse. Abuse is not checking the acid level and allowing it to be low for long periods of time. Another abuse would be overloading it with too high amperage during charging or overloading beyond the capabilities of the charging system. Under normal conditions, including driving lights, a lead acid battery should last at least a couple three years. I would also add allowing a battery, wet filled with acid (UN2794) to sit idle for an extended period of time without maintenance would allow one to be useless when finally expected to perform to standard. I just had a stator go bad this past weekend. At idle with every turned off except the stuff you can't turn off like the head light and such, checking the voltage at the battery at idle was about 12.62. My battery is good also; checked at 12.6 v with no load and looses no voltage overnight and it's specific gravity is also within range. Increasing the rpm to about 2200 the voltage at the battery, again with everything off, only increased to about 12.8; and that is way below specs (must be at least 13.6 or better by below 14.6 or so). My diagnosis, stator gone south. My new one just arrived by USPS and I should have it completely back together tomorrow; that is usless a tornado ruins my day (Ike related). Reading your posts, I think you have a charging system that is malfuncting and is most likely your stator as well. Just my two cents. -
Anyone headin towards the DFW area with no place to stay or go, I have a 30' motorhome equipped with satellite tv, two 19" plasmas, a full head, kitchen, a/c and generator and shore 30 amp as long as the power stays on. Private setup away from the main house. Room for another vehicle as well under the same rv cover. I am about 15 miles west of Fort Worth in Aledo, Texas. Could house two or three quite comfortably and for free. My number is listed on this site. Let me know as any member here is more than welcome. masterguns (Herb)

I need some really expert help. How would one bench test a stator? That is how can I test a replacement stator to ensure it is operational before installing it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. regards, masterguns

For those that up to this point are just considering participating in this upcoming Texas Stampede, and if you've never riden the back roads of E. Texas, there is reallly some incrediable scenery out that way. You have just got to come. We four had a really good time, saw some neat backwoods type stuff and ate some delicious cat fish. Tried to spark some interest in the ole 1st Ed/2d Ed thing but had no takers. Thanks JB for a good planning trip and allowing me to come along. Sorry to hear bout your saddlebag lid. Glad you had a backup. Hope to see everyone next month...GWATCDR! MasterGuns

what were they thinking?
MasterGuns replied to 6m459's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Those dash vents on my 88 seem to work pretty well as there is an air flow coming out. I just wish they we a/c vents and not just ambient air. You have got be careful when re-installing them. It is very easy to not line up the vent with the air tube that feeds/directs air in from just under the headlight. At least that is what I've experienced. Ugly when missing so what the heck, may as well replace them. -
Great! I hate bugs! Was you on a sled or in a cage?

JB, I will be arriving Rusk late Friday and staying in a motel. You have my cell number. I will be somewhere around there waiting for your call Saturday AM. Looking forward to meeting everyone at the Texas Railroad thing. Have a safe ride up from Houston.

Although I have never met you BigBob, from all that I've read here, you are a loved friend, outstanding member of this Venture family and most importantly, a great dad. I can only imagine how difficult times like this can be for your family and I and my family will certainly remember you in our daily prayers. Hang in there BigBob and from all of us fellow members down here Texas way, we are all wishing you a very speedy and total recovery. GOD Bless you and yours. MasterGuns

Battery drain problems
MasterGuns replied to Iowa Guy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Highly recommend exactly what GeorgeS said; check your charging system out first. I also ride a 1st gen with bunches of extra lights and 35 watt driving lights and don't seem to have the problem you are describing. At idle with all the lights on the voltage at my battery runs about 13.2 and when everything is turned off (that is everything that can be turned off; all extra running lights, the driving lights and the audio system) the voltage at the battery at idle is around 13.8. If revved to 2000 or so, it jumps up to about 14.1 or a little more. I think this is just about right. Check yours out this way and if you are getting less than these numbers, you may have a weak battery and/or weak stator/rectifier. Good luck. -
Are you sure it is just "slipping" or did you mean to type "jumping" out of second? Big difference.

Use to ride a 75 903 Z1B many years ago (bought it new as a matter of fact), and the carbs were numbered left to right as you are sitting on it. Most likely the same set up as far as which carb is #1. So, number one is first one on the left sitting on it. But then again that was many, many years ago; too many. Even put a 4 into 1 RC Engineering header and lots of other goodies on it. Sure was a haul a-- bike. Probably even faster than the 1300 I ride now.
-
Does the bike have dual antennas or the single? Reason I'm asking is if you have the single am/fm/cb antenna, perhaps you have a really mis-adjusted antenna tuner box (or whatever that box is called) or one that is defective. I had the same problem. I added a separate antenna for the radio and got rid of that tuner box thing and all is fine now.

OMG! What a difference. I use to have a slow starter once the bike was hot. Comtemplated replacing the starter or at least removing it and cleaning it out like is recommended somewhere on this site. But I thought I'd try the battery cable upgrade first. Wow! What a difference. No matter how hot things get, even on the hottest days around here in Texas, starts right up like it is the first start that morning. I am really impressed. If all you 1st gen owners haven't upgraded to the larger battery cables, I highly recommend you get after it right away. I at first thought it would be a difficult task but the entire procedure only took less than two hours and a little bit of vaseline. AND, I didn't have to mess around with pulling that extremely difficult starter.
