  1. Replaced the rad cap with a new one and bingo, all the boiling over, gurgling and carrying on after getting it really hot and then killing the motor has STOPPED. If anyone's bike is doing this, replace your rad cap.
  2. Maybe I'm nuts, but 148.00 for all eight sounds nuts too, as there are only six. Both front head pipes in, both rear head pipes in and two out. Where is he coming up with eight. Also, if you can get your olds one out without damaging them too much you should be able to reuse. I believe Yammerdan is referring to the metal o ring type gaskets that seal the header pipes where they bolt to the exhaust ports on the head.
  3. Corn deer feeders.
  4. You betcha there is a seal. The trunk lid seal is squeezed into a groove located at the juncture of the lid and bottom half of the trunk. Also, there is a slight adjustment to the lid that if too loose I suppose water could make its way in. Check it out.
  5. I hate minivans and Mickey D's.
  6. That's right; the rad cap from a 93 Geo Metro is the same as the OEM cap from Yamaha. Part #156 from NAPA. Or at least that is what I've read on this site. I bought one yesterday (about 8 bucks), checked it out real close and then ordered the stock Yamaha rad cap as it appeared to be a little different. I'd rather be absolutely positive I have the right cap on especially in these seemingly constant 100+ degree days here in North Texas. Just my 2 cents.
  7. Before all you comedians comment, I mean flushing a motorcycle cooling system, with chemicals. Just thought I'd throw that in first. Ha Ha! Now then, has anyone ever done this and what did they use? Did you use regular automotive cooling system flush formulated and safe for aluminum or was it bike specific? I don't really believe mine needs it but I am going to do it anyway. Just looking for some advise and experienced guidance.
  8. comes pre-mixed. You add it straight from the container. Besides this "boiling over" after killing the engine also occurred with regular antifreeze of varing mixutures. This is something wrong; defective cap, stuck thermostat, inside of radiator in need of descaling, something. Eventually, I will be to the bottom of it. Thanks
  9. Alright fellow members, I have already purchased a very expensive replacement rad cap for 6.58 from Autozone. When I have the time (this weekend), I am going to drain and recover what I can of that expenisive Engine Ice I have in the cooling system now. Then I am going to add some sort of radiator flush product. Hopefully I can find a flush designed for aluminum engines. I am going to flush using whatever a couple times. Replace the coolant and the $6.58 radiator cap. Then take it out on the freeway to check her out. Will advise the results, if any, afterwards. I am doing this because I know a lot of 1st Gen owners have the same high operating engine temp as I have especially when operating is hot areas. North Texas is a "hot" area, and in more ways than just the temp. Anyway, one last question: Has anyone ever used a "chemical" to flush their cooling system and if so, what? Standing by!
  10. Can a defective radiator cap cause coolant to bubble (for my lack of a better description) back into the overflow bottle? I believe coolant returning to the overflow is normal, I've just never heard it doing so. This only occurs when the motor is really hot. I've had several lst Editions and I've never had one do this even when touring in and through Death Valley (Furnace Creek) in 110+ weather. My temp guage was only a little past half way when I stopped today (108 here in Dallas) and killed the engine and within a few seconds this gurglling/bubbling sounds starts and today I even had some coolant run out the overflow line and puddle underneath the rear of the motor. Weird. I picked up a new radiator cap and hope this solves this issue. The radiator is clean, no clogged cooling fins, good thermostat, water pump in good condition and Engine Ice as coolant. Any advise would be highly appreciated.
  11. Thanks Don. Think I'll contact the hotel tomorrow and ask if there has been any improvements to their wireless router. I am also wondering 'bout mobile phone reception. I'll ask that question as well.
  12. Does anyone know if the hotel located at The Hub provides internet access in the rooms by means of a router or cable hookup? I will be arriving there Saturday and need to review work stuff on-line, time permitting of course. If not, no need to drag my laptop along. Appreciate any info anyone can provide.

  14. If you squeeze in 20 lbs of grease you won't miss.
  15. The rattling noise does not pose any further mechanical issues during operation. The bike will surely handle the rattling way longer than you will. Ride on. And most likely no body around you will be aware of the rattling more so than you. I once rode an 83 with a loose baffle for more than a year before I finally decided I would tackle it. Never thought about welding upside down.
  16. From my experience, smoke means the oil is finding its way to the top of the exhaust collector. In my opinion, if it was a faulty shift shaft seal, the oil would be further to the rear and would not drip onto the collector. That leaves only the clutch shaft (unlikely), the stator grommets (as previously mentioned), fairly good possibility, and the infamous "gear indicator switch", high possibility. I'll place my money on that highly ill designed plastic gear indicator switch which is mostly likely cracked or loose or both. Only one way to check it out is to pull the middle gear cover, clean up the area in and around all the above really well which are all located in the cavern behind the middle gear cover. When I say clean up, I mean that hole should be as clean and dry as you can possibly get it. Then re-assemble everything, add oil, and fire her up an run until it leaks. Disassemble the entire thing again and try to see where the oil is coming from (should be wet). I did the above several times and still couldn't figure it out so since I had an extra middle gear cover, I cut away the cosmestic portion so that I could run the motor while watching for the leak. Low and behold, it was the gear indicator switch. That cutaway middle gear cover is floating around with other members somewhere; lost track. Good luck.
  17. Exactly under which part of the bike is the drops leaking onto your garage floor? Thanks
  18. This stuff is suppose to be way, way better that water wetter. Read their site. I just want to know about results others may have had with "ENGINE ICE".
  19. a coolant called "Engine Ice". This stuff is proclaimed to be a high tech coolant that can reduce operating temps by as much as 50 degrees F. Before I have a couple gallons of this stuff shipped to me, since I can find it anywhere locally, I thought I'd check around with other members and see if anyone has installed this stuff and if they've noticed any improvement.
  20. I recently picked up an 86 VR and same thing; didn't know what oil had been used previously. This bike clunked when shifting even with 20/50 dino. Finally changed to Amsoil 20/50 and now smooth as silk and no leaks. If u run in extremely hot weather as I do here in Texas, 108 yesterday, I'd at least try using synthetic. In my opinion, if you develop a leak right after adding synthetic to your crankcase, a leak is a leak regardless of the oil used and needs to be addressed. If the bike had started leaking due to synthetic, I'd find and repair the leak, rather than changing back to dino. Synthetic is a much better oil in high temp conditions.
  21. Yes, I, too, found them at Lowes for a whopping 99 cents.
  22. Second Gens remind me of Harleys. As a matter of fact some look just like my Ultra Classic.
  23. Jeremy, When I have time, I am going to take her out again but this time take the back roads; a route where I can take it easy and not have to run in the 70 mph speed zones. Heck even though it is posted 70 most traffic is running 80+. I want to re-assess this bike's mileage more realistically. Will report back. I also need to pull a couple plugs and take a look see at how they are burning at the leaner needle setting.
  24. I finally got to test the mileage my 86 is now getting after installing this #4 washer slide needle mod. Filled the tank to nearly running out and took off on a 98 miles run mostly down Interstate 20 West. Was running mosting 75 mph up to 80 mph (one up) in temps well over 100, then took Highway 4 up to Palo Pinto. Highway 4 is about 20 miles of ever increasing elevation and lots of great twisties. I ran pretty strong while climbing. Got to the top and headed back East down Highway 180 again between 70 and 80 mph. Returned to the same gas station I had last filled up at and refilled, again to a level that the fuel was almost running over the rim. Total miles run, 98 miles and amount of fuel used 2.67 gallons. Average mpg = 36.7. My questions to all of you claiming to be gettng well over 40 mpg after this mod, just how are you driving or better put, under what conditions are you guys using to determine mpg? Are you running a flat 60 mph, perhaps 65 on flat roads? What is the temperature? I suppose I should retest mine at a flat 65 or maybe even 60 or maybe even 55 mph like the EPA does automobiles are report back. I just need to know if my results are acceptable under the riding conditions I reported. OR is something wrong with my bike and should I have gotten better mpg? All this is really not a big deal to me as even 37 is acceptable. I am only curious and everyone know how that goes. Thanks
  25. Hey, I wanted badly to attend but I just could justify 220 miles one way just to get fatter. The only other person from up this way was someone from Belton and Belton is about 75 miles, maybe more, closer to Lockhart. I am sure I missed a good event but there will be more. Are you attending the Intl Rally? Hope so, but again nobody from the DFW area is going. Guess I'll go it alone. I can wait until you see Mocha's long missing sister. She is sweet, just a little tacky but.......
