Electrical issue? Any thoughts?
Flyinfool replied to Yamaman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
For testing try turning the ignition switch real slow to see if you can find a happy spot to at least get it home. From what you are describing, it sure sounds like the ignition switch. -
HEY!!!! I just realized....... Thats cheating....... You just spent your whole winter here and now are heading back home just in time to miss our version of winter. Your going to go a whole year with no winters......... Yes I'm jealous.......

You mentioned that the steering was fly by wire. I would really not like for an electrical issue to take away my ability to steer. If it really is fly by wire steering, that would be a deal breaker for me, especially once they start getting old enough for me to be able to afford one.

What's with the clutch?
Flyinfool replied to darthandy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
:sign yeah that: When the engine is cold the oil is a little thicker so that is where the slip will first be noticed. The slip will get worse till it slips all of the time. Right now all you need is a new heavier spring and a gasket. If you wait long enough you will still need the spring and gasket but also all new clutch plates. You do not "need" to replace the half disc with a full disc. I am thinking of putting my half disk back in this winter. -
Kids make such great laborers. They can haul bricks and beer all day long. And then they sleep good at night. Don't pass up your golden opportunity..... Or just say screw the bricks and spoil the kids rotten for the trip home, after all that is a grandpas job.

I will be somewhere in my hour commute at that time and I will be on the bike. So I have you covered from here. -
My one day employment So after landing my new job as a Wal-Mart greeter, a good find for many retirees, I lasted less than a day... About two hours into my first day on the job a very loud, unattractive, mean-acting woman walked into the store with her two kids, yelling obscenities at them all the way through the entrance. I said pleasantly, ' Good morning and welcome to Wal Mart. Nice children you have there. Are they twins?' The ugly woman stopped yelling long enough to say, 'Hell no, they ain't twins. The oldest one's 9, and the other one's 7. Why the hell would you think they're twins? Are you blind, or stupid?' So I replied, 'I'm neither blind nor stupid, Ma'am, I just couldn't believe someone slept with you twice. Have a good day and thank you for shopping at Wal-Mart.'

green light triggers

I also put this N52 magnet on my center stand and all of my traffic light problems went away. There are a lot of people that have put tiny or whimpy magnets on there bike a then declared that magnets make no difference. You need a big powerful magnet to get the job done reliably. As a bonus I have pulled several screws and nails off of the magnet that I can only assume were headed for my back tire. To mount it I put some double sided foam tape on the magnet and then just stuck it on the center stand since that it the lowest point on my bike. Mine has been on there for 3 years now with no issues. As mentioned handle these magnets carefully they have the power to hurt you bad. they will also mess up older TVs or monitors from several feet away and do permanent damage. so you want to even pay attention to where you put the package. I feel sorry for the person that may have had a computer or other device with magnetic media nearby on the delivery truck. For rust protection I just painted mine black Rust-Oleum. -
Any progress on a shield for the 1st gen. If you need a pattern I have a worn, original, stock, 1st gen shield from my 88 that I can get to you.

If you are going to have retro styling shouldn't you also have retro features????? It is a dark shade of black.

Even though we did not get to meet, I received enjoyment reading of your adventures. So what is the final tally, how many states did you get to visit?

cold starting
Flyinfool replied to barend's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Check the cranking voltage at the starter terminal. If it is lower than when checked at the battery, you have a bad connection or a bad solenoid. Dont forget the connections on the ground side. Both ends of each wire. Also look at the crimp, the terminals faces can be clean but still have a corroded connection between the wire and the terminal. You can use your volt meter to find the bad connection. Your charging voltage is low, this would be any one or all of, bad connection, bad stator, bad regulator. All said, my first guess is a bad ground. -
A while back someone sued Harley because the steering wobbled and they lost control and crashed, BAD, when riding with no hands on the handle bar. I can't let go with both hands, my 88 will make a left turn right now.

I guess that the only time there would be weight on your but is for the hour or so during reentry and landing. How much padding do you need when weightless?

LED strip for front turn signals?
Flyinfool replied to geep's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
You mean kind of like this? http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=54686 It is not terribly hard to do IF you have at least a clue about electricity. To my knowledge there is not a "module" that you can buy off the shelf anywhere to do this. If you do some google searches you can find a circuit to do it and then you just have to be able to build it. It sounds harder to build that what it really is. I have tons of ideas for additional lighting for my bike this winter. I already have TWO 5 meter roles of the LED light strips with 300 LEDs each. This is in addition to the 168 LEDs that I already added. Now I just have to figure out where to put them all. I had thought of adding a strip of chasing LEDs that ran the full length of the bike. If I make them chase forward it will make the bike look like it is going faster than it is. This should get a lot of attention from LEOs. If I make them chase from front to back, then it will make the bike look like it is moving slower than it is. This could get me run over by a cage. If I could figure out a way to synchronize the chase speed to the speed of the bike it will make the lights look like they are standing still no mater how fast I am going. Is any of this leagal? I doubt it. -
I did call the local police this morning. I spoke with a detective. They are not interested since I did not actually get taken. So much for crime "prevention".

What I have figured out so far. The battery is a 1400mAh. They claim 6 hours of heat from a charge. I am going to assume that this time would be on the low setting. After a little quick math that means that the jacket is drawing about 1/4 amp @ 12V. If my assumption is correct then it is most likely 1/2 amp at medium heat and 3/4 amp at full heat. Well withing the electrical capacity of our anemic electrical systems. the wattage of the jacket seems to 3, 6 or 9 watts. That is about the same amount of heat as one of the old fashion large Xmas tree bulbs. That does not sound like a lot of heat to me. Does anyone know the power of a heated jacket that is made for bikes? As far as performance, there is about a 6 inch square patch in the center of the back and two more 6 inch square patches behind the two chest pockets. these are the only areas that are heated. I have never owned a heated garment of any kind. is it normal and effective to only have a few patches of heat?

So I am out in the back yard working on the house. This white van pulls up and the driver asks if I am interested in some asphalt work. He says that he is doing a major job in the area and will have some leftover asphalt, just enough to do my gravel drive. He then pulls a magnetic sign out of the back seat to show me who he is and the sign says that his rate is only $4.65 per sq ft. He said that since I would be helping him out by using his excess material he would do my job for $2.00 per sq ft. Hmmm odd that a contractor would keep his magnetic sign in the back seat and not where it could do some good. Looking at the area I determind it to be 20 x 30 or 600 sq ft. I asked him if he agreed with my area assessment and he said yes. He then told me that he could do the job for just $1375. Red flag number one. I said that was still more than I could afford right now and he dropped the job to $1000. I thought that was interesting and asked if I could call him back later tonight to let him know. I then asked him for a business card. He said he did not have one with him. they were all in his other truck at the job site. What business owner does not keep his wallet stuffed with cards. Red flag number 2. I did get his name and phone number. The phone number was from Framingham MA. I am in WI. Why would a local contractor have an out of state phone number. Red flag no 3 As soon as I got in the house after finishing what I was working on, I got on the puter ad Googled William Stanley and the phone number and got scam alerts from all over the country. They even had his picture in a NJ courtroom getting convicted of the paving scam. OK now I have a boatload of red flags. After reading the scam stuff, this guys spiel matched right down to his name and picture. The way the scam works is that he offers to do cut rate work for a real good price. once you accept he shows up and does some work and then hits you with a drastically inflated bill of more than 10 times the agreed price. He then gets nasty and threatens to take a contractors lien on your property. This guy is constantly moving across state lines. I have instructed my GF that if anyone shows up to try to do work to not answer the door or talk to them, call 911 immediately and THEN call me at work.
