  1. But some of us do not get channel 29, or any other channel for that matter.
  2. If the weather cooperates I will get 10 hours with just commuting to work. Commuting is 90% of my riding.
  3. :sign yeah that: :sign yeah that: I have found that by turning the turn signal on sooner, I have learned to get it to self cancel just as I am accelerating out of the turn. My understanding of the self cancel feature is that there are two things going on. One is just a simple timer that will turn off the signals after a fixed number of seconds. But this timer is only running when the bike is traveling at over a speed of 20-25 mph. So while you are sitting at a red light the timer will not run out and cancel while you are just sitting there. I have found that IF I actually come to a complete stop before the turn that the signal will self cancel as soon as I hit 20-25mph, which for me is about 3/4 of the way thru a turn. If you do a rolling stop like making a turn when the light is green then you are solely at the mercy of the timer. If you do some experimenting you can figure out just how much early you need to turn on the signal so that it will cancel at the correct time. The amount that is early is not excessive. in the city if I turn on the signal just as I cross the street prior to my desired turn, that cancels it right at the completion of the turn. On the freeway if I signal soon enough to get about 5-6 blinks before the lane change it will cancel pretty close to the end of the lane change. As far as making a self cancel that would really work in all conditions, you would be looking at something close to $300 each if made in quantity. There are a lot of variables that need to be considered. You would need gyros and accelerometers and speed sensors and timers and some software in a computer chip to try to calculate all of the variables. On the surface it sounds easy to do. Once you start to think of all of the different variables, it starts to get real complicated real fast. Or as Jeff said, you do have a thumb......
  4. Take it up to max pressure and start with the soapy water to find the leak. My 88 only needs the air in the suspension checked once in the spring when it comes out of storage. I have not had to add air to the rear shock for the last 2 years. The front needs 2 or 3 lbs added once a year.
  5. I first noticed it down a few minutes after 12:00 noon. With this site down it made me actually look like I had nothing to do at work. I was already cranky cuz I am not in Muncie IN on vacation right now, Then this site going down.......... There were nearly fatalities at work.
  6. OUCH! Naked bike pics on a PG site.
  7. Geez You guys have your colors all mixed up in the great white north. Here the colors are; Red and/or Blue is Police. Red and white is ambulance and fire White is school bus Yellow (amber) is tow trucks, snow plows, road work of any type, and just generally means caution. I have never seen or heard of a flashing green light used for anything on the road in the USA. But the green might clash with my Burgundy scoot. Green and red makes mud brown.
  8. Brad Glad you are OK. If you are still in Milwaukee and need help with anything let me know, I can try to help. I don't have much room to work but I do have some tools. I live on the south side of Milwaukee (I'm assuming you meant Milwaukee, WI).
  9. I can't believe that low compression in one cylinder would cause that much problem. There are many here (me included:whistling:) that have inadvertently left off 1 spark plug wire and rode quite a while before noticing the loss of power or change in the idle. That low compression cylinder should still be working, just not as hard. You should also look into why it is low on compression, Do you have a carb issue that is dumping gas in that cylinder and washing the oil off the walls? Is your oil level rising? Does your oil smell like gas? There is usually some reason for the rings in just one cyl to go bad.
  10. If you take it in for a repair estimate most places do not charge for that. At least none that I have dealt with. The forks could be very slightly bent and not be visible to the naked eye. I would also make sure that the bearings in the head and front wheel were not damaged, it does not take much to leave Brinell marks on the races.
  11. Are all of the materials for the job already on your property? They are yours, you paid for them. Are there any of his tools or equipment on your property, that could be a bargaining chip for at least a partial refund for work that was paid for but not done. You could just send him a certified letter with return receipt as proof that he did receive something from you that you claim was a cease work order. Since there is no completion date in the contract I do not know if you will be able recover and money paid to him or recover the cost of the new contractor as the cost of damages. Take lots of pics and make sure the time and date stamp is turned on. Take pics at the end of EVERY day whether or not any work got done. You need to be doing some of your own CYA. I think that any reputable contractor that is looking to finish this job will be understanding of your wish to have a completion date with penalties for being late written into the new contract. I would be wary of any that do not understand. Once you have him officially fired, contact every local referral service and the BBB. Maybe you can save someone else from the same Grief you are having. While you are talking to the local referral services find out about some good contractors. If all of the materials for the job are already there, expect the next contractor to bid high on the labor since he will not be making anything on the materials. You have a carrot of future work (if he does a good job cleaning up this mess) to try to get that cost down some. Good luck.
  12. I know that the ratios are a little different but would the gears from a MKI 1st gen drop in there? I just happen to have a set but it needs the 2nd gear fix to be done. But you will already be in there.
  13. Actually the closer the tank is to full the greater the force of a plugged vent will be. If you want to see how this happens, take a metal gallon jug, fill it with hot water, seal the cap, and put it in the frig over night. Gas is even worse because it expands and contracts from temp change even more than water does.
  14. If you can push the bike in 5th with the clutch engaged then it NOT a clutch problem. The slippage that you have in 4th says that is a clutch problem. You have two separate issues going on at the same time, very likely unrelated. One is the clutch, a minor issue. The other is 5th, You have a mechanical problem in there some where. I am not well enough versed on the workings of the trany to guess exactly what it might be.
  15. A plugged vent will do that. There is a thread on here on how to fix it.
  16. I agree except that it slipped and came back twice. A broken gear does not come back. The slipping is not very noticeable in 1st thru 3rd because the higher gear ratio lets the bike accelerate easier so the slip is not felt. It is still there, you just can not feel it.
  17. When you say it felt like neutral, did you let off the gas and the engine when to idle while you were still rolling at 55+? Other than this one part of your story, I agree with the others that you have the famous slipping clutch. It is possible that since you knew you were having issues you did baby it a lot more than normal which would help to account for the improved gas mileage and no slipping in 4th. When the clutch spring gets weak it is normal to have slipping in both 4th and 5th. It is also very important to use only oil made for use with a wet clutch or you will also get slipping. It will say on the bottle if it is. Putting in the heavy spring is a simple job. The first trip I took pulling a fully loaded trailer I never got above 4th and got better mileage than I normally do without the trailer. There is something to be said for letting an engine run where it is happy.
  18. YUP It just goes to show that If you do what a woman told you to do you will be in trouble, IF you don't do what you are told to do, you are still in trouble. I have learned to just do what ever I want because I'll get yelled at no matter what, I might as well get yelled at for doing something fun.
  19. Make sure to let them know that you think it might be metric so that they do not just pick the close inch size. Which is what you already have. The 2047 Bering Buddy is the next bigger size from the 1.98 that you said was to loose. http://www.bearingbuddy.com/select.html
  20. I really hate to hear that. Here in Milwaukee the Police Chief has finally publicly recognized that the department has a drinking issue after a lot of Milwaukee P.O.s have been getting ticketed and arrested for OWI. The chief has said that they will be looking into what can be done to reduce the amount of alcoholism on the force. The local Sheriffs Dept has the same problem. Here the police and sheriff do not play well together so they do not have an issue arresting each other for OWI. It makes the news every time too.
  21. Or even easier, take one of your caps in to have them measure it. Since the bearings are an oddball metric size I would assume that there is a good chance the bearing caps are also metric.
  22. OH! OH!
  23. Just spend more time out in the sun. It will break down in about 6 months of direct sun. :rotf:
  24. Generally that is caused by a leak........... Get out your bottle of soapy water and start looking for bubbles.
  25. I would give him a realistic deadline to finish because on that date you will file a claim in court to get ALL of your money back. If he has been running this scam for a while he already knows that the court will back him up since there is no completion date in the contract. Now if you can get him to make one of his promises and then add an appropriate amoount of time to allow for bad weather and get him to put it in writing. Then you would have a good case for court armed with a quote from another reputable contractor to finish and/or fix his work. It might be a good time to pick up one of those spy video cameras that look like a pen in your pocket to have proof of the conversation. The moment he is either done or you have written him off I wold start contacting the BBB and any other local similar organizations. Might save someone else from his BS. Or just tell the Warden "he is all yours" and walk away.............
