Probably what happened is the bearing failed and allowed the piston to contact the head. I had that almost happen with an old pickup. The piston was so close that the carbon was actually knocked off the piston. No damage though except a new/used crankshaft. But anywho... If it was me, I would buy a used engine with less then 100,000 on it. Since you're doing the work yourself, I would tear down the used engine and install new rod and main bearings and regasket the entire engine. Have you priced having a shop doing it and installing their own engine? If there were to be any warranty situations, it would be easier to deal with it that way.

Some of the fellas on the warrior board run a similar set up. For cruising around town they can lengthen them and lower the bike, but if they plan on hot rodding it on the Dragon, they can jack it back up with just a couple of minutes. My only problem with them is that the "body" of those setups is usually aluminum and I don't trust the aluminum threads to hold all the weight of these bikes.

Just did a little research. Sounds like 2300 is just the engine itself. Used ones are selling for over a thousand dollars. This engine is a direct bolt in replacement for the anemic 2.7 Chrysler motor so folks are swapping in the 3.2 when the 2.7 dies. I'd be hard pressed to invest $3000+ into a 10 year old vehicle. If the transmission has not been replaced, it will be the next to go. I just bought a used Merc Grand Marquis for $3200 OTD cash money a couple months ago with 108K on the clock.

Is that installed or just the engine itself? If it's installed, then it sounds like a fair price, but if it's just the engine, that sounds high to me.

My OEM pads make that noise as well. It's the holes in the rotors.

EBC HH pads are the best and are about the same price as OEM. EBC is also the only place besides OEM that'll carry rotors that I know of. Your dealer can order EBC and probably stocks the cheaper ones, but you can buy em online cheaper usually if you don't get double dipped on shipping charges.

2nd Gen Shifting Problem
flb_78 replied to ablumny's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
why are you stopping at a light in 3rd gear? These bikes don't shift very well if they're not moving. Sometimes I'll brainfart and stop at a light in 3rd or 4th. To get it to downshift, I'll hold it down and let the clutch out just a bit to get to grab. Repeat until 1st gear. -
Yes the bike will need to be rejetted for your particular system. Bub is the only maker of a full exhaust for the Venture/RSTD that I know of and it's expensive. I don't think anyone makes a "kit". You'll have to have it pieced together from separate jets I believe, but I could be wrong. If you don't want the hassle, you could always mount up the factory headpipes with the Bub mufflers.

The headlight does not draw 10amps. A standard 55watt headlight will draw 4.365amps at 12.6volts.

Tweaked Rear Tire: An Opinion or 2 Please!
flb_78 replied to fredster66's topic in General Tech Talk
You need to have the rear tire alignment compared to the front tire. It's also feasible that the rear fender is pushed out of place. -
SysteMax bought the rights to CircuitCity.com They have nothing at all in common with the old Circuit City stores. Nothing, Nada. They just bought the name. They also own TigerDirect I still prefer NewEgg.com to either of them.

What is the farthest distance you have ridden in one day?
flb_78 replied to Yama Mama's topic in Watering Hole
1200 miles give or take -
I would not run a tube inside a tubeless tire and tubeless wheel. I would patch/plug it from the inside and keep riding. Im running on a patched front tire right now given to me by another member who was not comfortable riding on a repaired tire. http://upload.ecvv.com/upload/Product/20097/China_patch_plug20097171653111.jpg

Clearview Windshields
flb_78 replied to YamaDuck's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I bought a blemished Clearview shield. It has a little dot just to the right of center. It bothered me for about 3 weeks, then I quit noticing it. I'd notice it once in a while and it looked like a rain drop. I now run the Yamaha short shield. LilBeaver has my shield now.- 26 replies

If the Strat gets about the same mileage as my Roadstar did, then the Strat would have more range for me. My Venture only does about 32mpg, my Roadstar did 43mpg.
-
Because when they do, all the dealers will quit carrying parts for them and they'll dry up. So then the 2nd genners will be scrounging old wrecks for parts like the 1st genners and complaining about how you can't get parts for them. DUH!!

First, one needs to understand the numbers. The first number 0W, 5W, 10W, 15W, 20W stand for their "winter" weight or cold weight. The second number 20, 30, 40, 50 is the weight of the oil at operating temperatures. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/fuel-efficiency/fuel-consumption/question1641.htm The first number isn't as important as the second number for most folks. Folks who commonly ride is very cold temps will want a lower first number for better oil flow at cold startup. The second number is the number to look at. At operating temperatures, a 10W40 and a 15W40 oil will flow the same in theory. I don't have my owner's manual in front of me, but I believe Yamaha recommends a non-friction modified 10W30 or 20W40 depending on riding conditions. A 5W-40 oil should be more then suffice for these engines. It'd be interesting if someone who has installed the gauges to test a 5W40 oil and a 20W50 oil to see the difference in oil pressures at different temperatures.

93,000 of my 99. I bought it almost 2 years ago with 64,000 on the clock.
