  1. Over this past year of my affiliation with this site I have noticed that out of 10 different responses to a question there may be 6 variants on opinions. That is the beauty of these forums. You get to see what lots of folks are doing on any given subject. Here is another one....... When I purchased my 05 RSV last May I asked my mechanic at the dealer which fuel to run. His reply was that since it is a high compression engine, it would be better to run Premium fuel. He also said that 10% Ethanol would be acceptable. I have been dealing with this dealer and this mechanic in particular for the past three years. He has always been very helpful and never once steered me wrong. I'm no expert. That is why in addition to my warranty I have a maintenance contract with my local Yamaha dealer to perform all my service work. During my younger days when I had multiple muscle cars and built my own high compression engines it was easy to hear and feel the difference that premium fuel provided over lower octane blends. The Expedition I recently traded ran terrible on low octane, but my full size pickup runs fat, dumb and happy on the cheaper blend. For me, the difference in cost for premium fuel in my scoot is minor... so I run premium. Obviously others are having success with the lower octane. Just see what works best in your scoot.... and ride that puppy!!!!!!

    Log Gas Mileage

I see you have a 2008 Venture. My 05 has 13800 miles on it. Just took an 800 trip to Tybee Island, GA over Memorial Day weekend and averaged between 41 and 44mpg riding 2 up and loaded out. ... Noticed some popping (slight backfire slowing down) and that it wasn't pulling at 65mph up hill as smoothly as it once did. Had carbs sync'd this last Saturday. They were way off. It is running great now. Any backfire? Does it run rough in a pull? I'm sure that these people on this site know way more than I do about how to diagnose the problem. Tim
  3. The cycle shop put new MT66s on my 05 RSV when I purchased it last May. Friday of last week I was cleaning up the bike getting ready for a trip with my wife to Tybee Island, GA for a couple days during the Memorial Day weekend when I noticed that the rear tire was starting to crack in the grooves between the treads!!! YIPES.... The tires only have 7500 miles on them. The front still looks good. I went back to Cycle Works in Carrollton, GA for a new tire. Unfortunately they did not have any more Avons in stock for the RSV. I have said in past posts on this site that I would not put anymore MT66 tires on my bike. I just don't like the feel on the road. But it was mount an MT66 on the rear or call off our trip on the bike. So I mounted a new MT66 on the rear and we put 800 miles on the scoot over the holidays. At my bike shop the Avons are only about $40 higher than the MT66s. When the front needs to be replaced I will put the Avons on. In the end I just want to feel stable on the road. For the speedo... I have also noticed that actual speed could be 9% off.
  4. Saturday morning at daylight... my wife and I are riding the scoot to Tybee Island, GA. Two days enjoying the ocean will be wonderful. 700 miles of 55 and 60 mph riding through the country side..... HEAVENLY!!!! The ride is the real vacation. Might as well enjoy the ocean while we rest up... for more riding! Tim
  5. Speaking with my father-in-law a little over a year ago I told him that I would wait a few more years while I paid down the house before I bought a touring bike. He replied that as much as his daughter and I loved to ride and if we could afford it, don't wait! We have no idea what our health will be like a few years. Two months later, I purchased my 05 RSV... and I don't regret it one bit. Scratch the itch if you can afford it. Don't live life leaving unfulfilled dreams.
  6. I hate divorce, but sometimes you just don't have a choice. Married a pastor's daughter. She had an affair and we divorced 7 years later. Married the Chairman of the Deacon's daughter for a second marriage. We have two beautiful girls all grown now. But after 15 years she had an affair and we divorced. Oldest daughter was adopted, grown and on her own by then. Youngest was only 13. I spent the next 6 years raising the youngest by myself till she headed to college. One month later I purchased a new Star Cruiser. Single life wasn't too bad... then there she was... cute little school teacher. Second date was a Sunday ride (after church) into North Georgia. It was her first ever ride... and......... she has been riding with me ever since! Married for two years on 16 July 08, our favorite past time is on our RSV cruising the back roads or taking short day trips. My best friend and my confidant, I only wish I had met her 30 years ago. uh.. well... guess she would have been in high school at that time! She goes by tmodelsbikerchik on this site.
  7. OH MY GOD......INCREDIBLE!!! Maybe he should be teaching weapons training for our police.
  8. My dad was a career truck driver. He would only drive locally. Earned less but he was home with the family every night. I got my CDL in the 80's during my 23 years with UPS. Drove a rig on off days and weekends to help a friend occassionally.. including a dump. I continued to go to college as I could and was able to turn that into an IT Supervisor job with UPS for 7 years till I took the only management buyout UPS has ever had and got the heck out of there. Been working in IT System Engineer jobs every since. Doesn't that seem like a natural move???..... from truck driver to IT Engineer..... I maintain my CDL to this day. Can't see throwing away a job option!
  9. Seems like most of the gas here in my part of Georgia has 10% corn squeezings. I haven't seen any problems...yet.
  10. My dad in law sent this too me a couple months ago. Looks like the car ran the light.. but on a bike... you can still be right and be dead! I think the numerious professional driver training courses I had to take when I was a commercial driver has saved my bacon many times with cages and bikes. This biker made a fatal error. He did not clear the intersection before he tried to drive thru it. It didn't matter that he had the light. I think the "cops" on this site would agree. Take a defensive driver's training. It will help you stay alive because it will teach you to think. One last note.... 3 separate crashes, two were friends a one was an acquaintance. The acquaintance died. One friend died. The last was a man and wife...last year... in the Smokies. They suffered a broken leg for him and stiches for the both. ALL 3 CRASHES WERE DRIVER ERROR! Moral: You only get one chance to do it right... the first time.
  11. I spoke to the head mechanic at my Yama dealer this last week about tires. He recommended the Avon Venons with much praise for the thickness of the tires. I think I'm gonna have to save my nickles and plan for some Avons. Next to running into deer in the Georgia/Alabama countryside, the Pirelli tires on my scoot don't inspire confidence for me.
  12. I did some riding and camping back in my 20's when I was still young and stout... right out of the Army. A tent, sleeping bag, small light and a small bag of clothes was all I took (and the wife). No trailer. I just got my RSV last year. Hoping for a trailer by the end of this year. I would suggest you plan for KOA's or State Parks... or research ahead of time the camp grounds you will stay in. You will want the shower and laundry facilities and they usually have a small store if you need something. Also, I suggest you pack an air mattress and small pump in your trailer. If you don't camp primitive then you will have an electrical plug in at your site and can blow up your mattress. The only way I'm sleeping on the ground is if the air mattress leaks out in the middle of the night! I'm sure there is lots of better advise on this site than what I can give. Some good planning will make for a excellent trip. Tim

    Seat removal II

I had my seat off Saturday. Used a 1/4 inch drive and a 10mm socket.
  14. I only see one thing wrong with that bike. It is up north instead of down here in Georgia with me! That's a sharp look'n puppy!
  15. I think you would be fine riding the scoot to the Bike Wash. I have never had a single problem with any of my bikes. If it is really dirty.. like maybe you are riding through creeks and pipe lines... with your RSV .... then the car wash is the only way to go!
  16. Had them on my Silverado Classic and got'em on my RSV. They do help out at night and add to your visibility in the day time.
  17. Yea, I think you might need to have the scoot checked out. My 05 get's low 40s with two up like others are mentioning. I rarely check the mileage any more. My bike and I have an understanding. I fuel her up and she burns it out! ... and I get to enjoy her doing it!
  18. Long hours at work then when I get a day either the weather is bad or we I am stuck at the table with school work. But I promised my wife that if the weather permits... this Saturday we will ride. Georgia has had some decent days (between tornados) to ride. It has been three weeks since our last adVenture. My Yamahorse grows impatient

    Hey Condor

UPS Belt??? You are a UPSer... in Marietta? Good grief. I put in 23 years with UPS at Fulton Industrial, Forest Park and on the road!! I'm so glad to be gone from there. My prayers are with you! Tim
  20. I purchased my 05 RSV from a Yamaha dealer last May and had new tires put on. Not knowing what to ask for I just took what they recommended. ... which was the Pirelli MT66. I don't run hard so the tires don't get pushed. I'm usually two up and these puppies really howl in the curves. I'll go the bucks and put something better on next time.
  21. Almost forgot this one... I picked up my girlfriend (who is now my wife) for our 4th date on my VStar Cruiser back in 2005. We were heading out of Woodstock Ga. through Canton to go ride in the hills. I had already spent 23 years with UPS gaining driving experience in both delivery and tractor/trailer. The driver's training I received at UPS no doubt saved us from injury or more on this day. While on the multi lane highway throught Canton I noticed an Explorer to my right that I was approaching, start to drift slightly towards the left line. My drivers training had me immediatly look at the driver's mirror on the Explorer to see if he was paying attention. He wasn't! As I released the throttle and was moving my brake foot to position this ... driver... whipped his vehicle across my lane, no signal and never checking his mirror, into the middle. I locked the back brake, locked the front brake and Cindi was thrown forward into me. Fortunately I kept us up and stopped short of the Explorer by a few feet. But I had to pull off the rode and calm my girl down (or at least that was my excuse)!
  22. Well Captain, there is some good advise here... and some that may be a bit more on the emotional/get even side of the equation. Here is my marginal advise. 1. Spend 15 minutes with a lawyer to get good legal advice. That will cost little to nothing but might save you tons of heartache. 2. Don't part out the second bike until it is legally yours or you might experience the worst possible slap in the face: Not getting paid for your work on the 1st bike and then having to pay him for the second one ... in court!!! PROTECT YOUR GOOD NAME. He will continue to ruin his.
  23. That's a good looking rig Brian. I'll be glad when I can add a trailer to my travel accessories. I'm very focused on getting out of debt. While the trailer isn't a necessity, we all know my RSV is a must!!! It keeps me from going postal and is more addictive than drugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  24. After reading some of these post my close calls seem pretty minor... especially the bee in the ear and flying sheetmetal!! YOWWWWW... My wife and I were on the highway running about 55. Don't know if it was a bee or hornet but it hit me in the left knee (leaving a goose egg) bounced into my chin stinger side up! It felt like I had just caught a fist to the face. Years ago was on the highway running 50 or so when a German Sheperd walked out in front of me. Thought I would miss him but the idiot dog stopped in the middle of the road to late for me to avoid him. I gunned it just before I hit him. He went down but I managed to ride over him and maintain control. Both me and the bike were ok. Can't say the same for the dog. He went to meet Jesus! Sorry about the dog but was glad I didn't swerve and go down!
  25. If these bikes are the prototype for the 2009 RSV, then Carbon_1 may need to build a new product line to enable the attaching of the Nigerian Travel Trailer to this bike! I wonder if they finally got rid of the cassette deck?
