  1. In my effort to get the CLASS system functional, I took the compressor apart to make sure the motor wasn't seized. I took the top off of the cylinder and the piston moves freely. The problem? There are small metal discs in the top...anyone have a picture of how they go back in? There seems to be more than one way, and Iwant to make sure when I get the new relay that this is functional. Thanks.
  2. We are staying at a hotel in Parkersburg, WV. Yesterday morning I went out to the bike to find that somebody had keyed the top of my right saddlebag. Bad scratch about 4 or 5 inches long right across the top. Definitely too deep to polish out. Nine years of owning this bike and have managed to keep it pretty much scratch free the entire time. Really ticks me off. So, I guess I'll be looking for a new top of the bag and if I can't find one at a reasonable price, may just put the leather covers over them. I hope I can find one though. I know I could have it repaired but don't know that they would ever match the paint to my satisfaction.
  3. Hello to all and let me just thank you all for helping me with this question. I'm looking into getting a trunk rack to be able to carrie extra stuff can anyone tell me how much weight can I put on top of the rack and is it a good idea to get it. thanks again for the responds from all.
  4. Have an '89 with two small cracks on the L faring just at the top by the stereo assembly. What is the best way to repair, they are about 1/2 inch long from the top around the trim edge and just under.?? Also, has anyone ever put higher gears in their Venture? I get 40 MPG average under 60 MPH on the back roads where I don't get on and off the throttle alot, but on the interstates, well that is a different story - my MPG is about 31 - 36 depending on the head winds. Have had Goldwings that got 48 on the back roads, and 45 on interstate. This Venture runs about 1000 -1,200 tighter than a Wing, need to put in higher gears or a sixth one!?!?!?!?!?!?! Thanks for any help or guidance! Caz
  5. I need some help. I opened the truck on my 2005 RSV and removed my helmet after work today, no issue. When I got home (10 mile drive) and attempted to open the top to replace the helmet it seems that something has gotten in a bind. The lid will only open far enough to place a half helmet in it. Any suggestions as to what may be catching and not allowing the top to fully open? Thanks
  6. Let me start off by saying I used to own a 96 Royal Star Tour Classic. Except for power, I really did like the ride of that bike. Now, I own an 89 VR, and for short legged guys like me it is quite top heavy, but ride is OK. Recently I ran into a buddy of mine and he is now riding a 2006 RSTD and it looks sweet...so sweet I am considering looking at one. Especially since I got all the bugs worked out the 89 right? Everyone states that the 2nd gen Ventures are very top heavy. So, my question is this. Is the RSTD top heavy too? I thought they were basically the same bike, just more features? I sat on my buddies and it didn't feel top heavy but did not get to drive it. Does the fairing and rear trunk bag add that much upper weight? I sure would like to get opinions from the RSTD and 2nd gen riders. Thanks.
  7. Ok I finally got time this evening to install my new Fork Brace. I got the black and I suppose it doesn't look bad. A little different, but I'm glad I went with the black, maybe just to be different. So far I haven't got to test it out yet. I only got a short ride in this evening and didn't get to try out the top end yet, but I will be soon. I'l proide an update later to see if my wobble is any better. (Thanks Condor)
  8. I am looking at replacing my stock windshield with one from Clear View, and read that most people want to see over the top of the windshield, I currently look through the windshield and like that. Why does most prefer to look over the top?
  9. Just a note for those of you who don't watch the Stickies at the top of the page. I have updated the VR Assistance list this evening. Details are in the Sticky at the top of the Watering Hole.
  10. After taking our first long ride this past weekend, and both of our hind quarters aching a bit, is there enough of a comfort difference between the regular seats and the pillow top seats? This is to passengers too. And while I'm on it, how much of a difference is there between the stock seats and an aftermarket, corbin, mustang, etc. in terms of long term comfort?

    Rsv Top Speed?

I have a 2008 RSV and I'm wondering what is the top speed? Reason being, I had three GoldWings, one ran 138 MPH, another 118 MPH and the third 108 MPH according to the speedometers.
  12. OK, what have I done wrong or not done at all? I am attempting to replace the forks seals in my '83. I have gone according to the tech article and have gotten to the point where I pull (pound) the bottom forks off, and I can't get them to budge. Everything else that was in the article is done. The oil drained, 10mm cap screws removed from bottom of forks, upper assembly and springs, dust caps and retainer clips...but when i try doing the slide hammer technique it is like hitting solid steel. What exactly is it that is still holding the bottom forks on that I am pounding against? I even tried putting a 2x6 on the front axle bolt and pounding on that with a large hammer, but I'm at the point that I'm afraid I'm going to bend or break something. Is there something that was not listed in the tech article that I don't know about? One other thing, well actually two. One, (assuming I ever get them forks off) the replacement seal says: "oil side" on one side and "air side" on the other. Is the oil side the bottom and air side the top? and two: Do you put the new fork oil in the top of the upper tube last after everything but the top tube caps is done? I can pound a little harder if I won't break anything, but already I am raising the back tire off the floor with each stroke. Any thoughts for this old hillbilly?
  13. I am really worried about a leak on my new Venture. I have used the dealership for 15 plus years and do trust them but this problem really concerns me. I picked up the bike in August and on the first few miles I noticed some coolant behind the left rear cylinder. The dealership said that they re-torqued the head bolts and it should be all good. I then noticed some oil in the same spot and it seemed to continue. I basically have oil all over the side stand and drips all over the garage floor. I have never needed to add oil as the level is right at the top of the sight glass. The mechanic feels that there must be something wrong with a gasket as it is not seating properly and because of the slow nature of the leak he said it was OK to ride and he would pull the motor apart over the winter when it wasn't cutting into my riding season. He most recently told me that he talked to a rep at a convention and was told that Yamaha used a new environmentally friendly process for bolt retention instead of something like loc-tite that they had always used and that might be contributing to the problem. My fears include: that the bike will always leak (given this "new" technique") plus I have oil all over the underneath of my bike. I have also heard that over filling the oil could cause blow by. Since my oil level is way up at the top of the sight glass, could the leak be that blow by? Just wondering... Any other thoughts? I am not well versed in the mechanics of the motor and thought some of you might have some insight. sorry for the long post - if you have any more questions I can ask my mechanic... Here are 3 pictures of the left rear cylinder and from underneath. You can see where the oil settles (I have not cleaned the bike for a week so that the pics would be obvious).. http://www.fototime.com/554B44BC04B821F/standard.jpg http://www.fototime.com/287EB48769D72E4/standard.jpg http://www.fototime.com/D9E90F19B12FC8C/standard.jpg

    Venture leads the way

Yall would be so proud. http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h113/tx2sturgis/ride-time/IMG_1176.jpg Went riding with a bunch of buddies Sunday...once again, I was asked to be 'point man'. I took everyone on a short ride around some of the more scenic areas in Amarillo, and led them to the top of this little hill that is northwest of Amarillo. I pulled over at the top, and although its hard to see, my 2007 Venture is at the front. All the other bikes are Harleys. Three ElectraGlides, a Fatboy, a Sportster, and a RoadKing. You can see the Amarillo skyline in the distance. Granted, these guys know I'm good at running 'point', and they know that I'm very familiar with the area. Still, its a hoot when your the only metric rider with a small herd of Harleys following. Kinda fun. I tried to get some video of the ride, but its hard to do when your the one in front, riding solo. Then my camera batteries died. Oh well. First order of the day was a big biker breakfast at a place called Cody's, on the north side of Amarillo. Huge pile of food, and we all just toss in a few dollars to the cook. Then we made a few stops at some watering holes, and ate some free food, including calf fries, at a redneck dive called the Ranch House. All in all, a good time was had by all. http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h113/tx2sturgis/ride-time/DSCN0937.jpg So...any other Venture riders wanna come along next time?
  15. Anybody know if a top case frame from a Venture can go onto a Tour Deluxe?
  16. I have a 99 RSV. I was changing the spark plugs on the bike tonight and when I took the tank off I discovered quite a bit of gas on and around the air box on the top of the carbs. The only thing I could find was the boots on the top of the left carbs were quite loose. I don't know if I have a vacuum leak some where or why there would be gas hanging around up there. Oh and the bike has been running perfect. Any thoughts would be appreciated, not real familiar with carb works.
  17. I am currently in the market (mainly researching right now) for a good one and/or two-up bike that can be used for local and long distance riding although I do not want a full dresser. The RSTD is one of a few models that has caught my eye that I feel might be able to serve my purposes. I am wondering, however, if there is a hard top case that can be fitted to the RSTD. Can you fit a Venture top case onto the RSTD or is there an aftermarket case that works (& looks) reasonably well? Also, I see that the RSTD is carburated for '08. Does anyone know if '09 will bring FI? All input is very much appreciated.
  18. I've got the windshield off and the headlight out and I can't even see the cable. Just about 1.7 million wires. Any suggestions? Does the big plastic piece that would be the top of the dash come out? and how? Thanks for any help...
  19. Got a new(used) Blackberry 7290 for my daughter. She just HAD to have it. We cannot get any ringtones or such to transfer from my phone (samsung) via bluetooth. Her BB has a message on top that says "data connection refused." Any help from a Blackberry savy user is appreciated. Just PM me. Thanks
  20. i got my repair parts in today. so, before i start pulling the flywheel off, are there any "uh-oh's" that i need to be aware of? is anything gonna "jump out at me"??? does anyone know off the top of their head, what the torque values are for reassembly? any help, greatly appreciated! just jt
  21. I did the stebel horn upgrade, Thanks to all the help on this site it went great, also Thanks to Larry, his bracket is perfect for the job fits and looks great!! I removed the chrome cover from the rear as recommended and put a big dab of clear silicone on the top of the unit and stuck that cover rite on top, it looks great, also siliconed the side chrome cover on, my question, do you guys use some kind of covering over the wires, like a rub guard, to keep the insulation from wearing off? or is that overkill, also the connections seem dangerously close to the tail pipe, is that going to cause a problem? I have visions of those air-horns going off because of a short somewhere, and not being able to shut them off. Thanks Craig
  22. Well I have the factory light bar for my bike but I'm still waffling on what switch to buy. So far I've gotten a switch to put in the fairing but changed my mind so I bought a billet switch to mount on the handlebar. Now I don't think I want that one either. Bummer recommended the Kuryakyn switch that mounts on the master cylinder. I like it but haven't seen one in real life. Does it slide over the master cylinder reservoir or simply sit on top? http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/images/image_18259_200.jpg Here is another brand. It looks like it either slides over the reservoir or is a replacement. Note the cover is on top. I'm really interested in this one because it looks like I can mount my Hoon XM radio mount on top. Anyone know about this style? http://www.wingstuff.com/pgroup_detail/361_Accessory_Switches/20159_Chrome_Brake_Side_LED_Accessory_Switch_Block/?goto=%2Fpgroup_list%2Fgl1800%2F361_goldwing_Accessory_Switches%2Fdes%2F http://www.wingstuff.com/images//store1/pgroups/20159_image1.gif
  23. Change the plugs in my "06" today and I notice the area around the carbs on the left side (on/off fuel valve side) had alot of oily film, that plastic box that sits on top of the carbs, I removed the top was the same, on the left oily and normal on the right. Don't know what to make of that? Any ideas? Some kind of blow by????
  24. After finally getting back into ripping the bike apart for the 2nd gear fix, I found the previous owner removed the battery vent hose. As you can tell from the pics, I've got some paint to redo, but the biggest thing is I now need a new battery box bracket. This goes across the frame and the box sits on it. Also looking for some cleaner front pipes as these are pretty well shot, unless someone can give me an idea as to how to clean them up. Going to be a long process, as I wasn't expecting this much to do, but it's apart, and might as well get done. Also found acid corrosion on the box terminals and just about everywhere else. Gonna put new valve cover gaskets on, too! Top and front of the motor looks NASTY!!! Oh well, back to work!!!
