  1. Took the step forward and joined the Patriot Guard Riders. Now to "gear up".
  2. I can start my 84 in 1st gear but cannot get it into neutral! I just repaired the shift pit problem I was having and now no neutral. Hard to get out of the garage in gear....
  3. Hello everyone, i'm happy to join the family. Now on to my problem. About a month ago I came across an ad on craigslist for an 84 yamaha 1200 in pieces for $600. I immediately answered the ad, and to my surprise I found a Venture. I negotiated it to $500 and brought it home. I assembled it and got it running right, which was a job in itself as it had been sitting for 5 years(ethanol sucks!!!). I went out for my first ride on it Friday and it was great. After about 75 miles I put it back into the garage for the night. Saturday afternoon I fired it up and headed out again. After about 15 miles it started shifting funny, stuck in gear unless slowing, etc. It then stayed in first gear and would not shift up. 15 miles home in first gear plus some seafoam really helped my carbs. Thanks to a post from pegscraper I knew exactly what to look for. I pulled the clutch to find a bent tab on the shift drum and a missing pin. I will run to the local bike shop and grab the parts to throw it back together this week. The only problem is the missing pin, it's nowhere to be found. Probably in the bottom of the crankcase. So how should I go about getting it out? After running it 15 miles all through the rpm range getting the bike home i'm thinking the pin could probably spend the rest of its days in there harmlessly. I would love to ride this thing through the summer and tear it down in the fall as it has the normal second gear issue that the first gens are known for anyway. What do you guys suggest.
  4. Anyone knows approximately the speed of an MKII at low redlined and high redlined in each gear?
  5. After all I read about our whining problem, nothing seams to have made much sense:think: until now. I read this TECH Q&A in Rider magazine and thought some one else may be interested. Q: / recently purchased a used, one-owner 2007 Yamaha Royal Star Venture with the 1,300cc V-4 engine, still under factory warranty with 7,000 miles on it, I discovered (only after I brought it home and began to ride it) that as the engine speed increases there is an annoying "whine" to the motor. I have talked to two other Venture owners about this, and whine is so loud you can't hear the radio! Is this something I should take back to the dealer to have looked at, or is this truly a whine I have to live with? By the way, the noise is in the engine— not the drivetrain—because it is noticeable in neutral as the motor is revved. Dave Sugarbaker, Via E-mail A: The kind of noise you're describing usually comes from straight-cut gears, and the Venture has two sets: the gear pair that drives the clutch and the pair that drives the balancer shaft. The primary gears—the ones that drive the clutch—seem to be the problem here. Most manufacturers address the noise issue by using helical-cut gears (teeth that are at an angle rather than parallel to the shaft) or split gears (gear pairs that are slightly offset and spring loaded). Now, by using straight-cut gears, Yamaha has made accuracy in the machining of the gears highly critical. A driven gear (the one on the clutch hub) that's just a couple of thousandths of an inch too big will make a lot more noise. As with all mass-produced machinery there's a plus and minus tolerance, and ideally the gears will be matched so the tooth engagement is just right. The engineers have probably made sure that even if you got two "big" gears there would be enough tolerance in the shaft bearings that it wouldn't cause a bearing failure.I suggest you take your bike in to your favorite Yamaha dealer and get it looked at while it's still under warranty. Even if the mechanic can't find the problem (using Plastigauge to measure the clearance and then actually finding a specification to compare it to), you'll have documentation and if something breaks later you'll have something to fall back on.
  6. While poking around in our Classified section I saw this ad for an '88 with a bad second gear. I've never heard of this happening to a 1300 tranny before??... http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php/product/1327/cat/3
  7. I have to remove the gear cover to get at the slave cylinder to replace clutch line I removed all the bolts but before i go and try to pry it off I need to make sure theres nothing else to look for I only found 7 bolts and the service manual IS NOT very clear as to what to remove any one done it before???
  8. In an earlier thread http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=60093 I expressed concern over power loss and low fuel economy at altitude. (See the trip report on page 2) So today I had my RSV run on a dyno to see if some electrical or mechanical problem might be the culprit. The first chart is 'one run' in fourth gear and 'one run' in fifth. The Second chart is 'two runs' in fourth and 'two runs' in fifth. We ran in fifth because that is where I experienced the most problems on my trip. The bike was flawless on the dyno. The rev limiter on my bike clearly cuts off at different RPM depending on which gear it is in. Fifth at about 5600 and fourth at about 6600 rpm. My guess is this is probably because of the speed rating on the stock tires. Both techs at the dealer reported I could expect about a three percent loss of power for each thousand feet in altitude. Since a lot of my riding on the trip was at 5,6, or 7,000 feet that seems consistent with my experience. Horsepower is on the ground and after gear reductions and drive train loss. So it is less than the engine horsepower in the specs.
  9. put the bike back together after 2nd gear rebuild and am at the point where I should be able to check operation except something aint right.... So here is the question= put the shifter in what is supposed to be 1st gear and the indicator states 5TH gear???? What the heck is up with that? thanks in advance, mike
  10. OK, I am going to preface this by saying that other than a Suzuki GT550, I've never had an electric starter system apart...every other bike I've owned is either kick only or the electric starter system never gave me a problem, so I don't know how, or have any real frame of reference as to how the electric leg works on the Venture. When I thought that the ignition pickups were bad (they aren't) I took off the generator cover and 2 shafts and 3 gears fell out. Naturally, I had 5 separate pieces on the floor instead of 2 assemblies. I put the pieces back in in what seems to me to be the logical way and I looked at the microfiche, but it's not 100% obvious as to the correct order that the parts install. Attached is a picture of how I reinstalled the gears. With no gears installed, the starter driven gear on the back of the rotor spins freely in 1 direction only as I figured that it would. With the gears installed as per the picture, I can't easily spin the driven gear in either direction, but it appears that this arrangement is the only way that everything lines up. Did I put this back together correctly or am I about to cost myself some serious money? Thanks, Jeff http://www.3cyl.com/jeff/starter%20gears.jpg

    Heated gear

Does anyone know if the heated gear controllers are compatible across the board? I am particularly interested if the First Gear and Gerbings will work?
  12. Well I finally made the plunge. I have not been happy with 5th gear since I have owned this bike. So I finally broke down and swapped out the differential for one with the Vmax gears. That changes the gear ratio from about 3.3/1 to about 3.6/1. Not a drastic change but oh what a difference in handling. This is the gear that should have been in the Venture from the factory. No more bucking and lugging. Fifth is now usable from under 40 to over 100 mph. The bike is much more responsive at all speeds and in all gears. Slow speed cruising in first is much improved as well. So thanks Freebird. Your article in the Tech section convinced me to go ahead and give it a try. John Furber at RMSportmax was easy to work with and got the gears to me quickly. Mike
  13. I have recently been given an "88 Venture Royal , with 104k miles , and its been pulling a very heavy trailer on long trips . The guy said he was concerned about the milage , and its starting to make a little noise it 4th & 5th gears . In fact it makes a very loud gear whine in all gears , that changes with speed both pitch and volume . At 45mph and up , and holding a steady speed it is the worst . It goes away if you coast , gets quieter if you accelerate or decelerate . My first thought is pinion gear , which this thing has 2 of . And I can't tell if its motor end or final drive end . And it is leaking motor oil at the front drive shaft , and is definitely worse with a passenger . With the bike on it's center stand , and in gear , I can rotate the rear wheel 3 to 4 inches of play . What would be normal here ? I'm hoping for only the crush sleeves on the pinion shaft to be beat up / bad . Has anyone had any experience with this ?
  14. Hi all, my 03 venture has always jumped when I first put it in gear after sitting over night. The clutch fluid is full, I have "pumped" the clutch before putting it in gear, no change. It is like all the oil is pushed out of the clutch disks and plates while it is sitting for a while. Once I take off, no more problems for the rest of the day. I installed the PCW spring kit and all new disks. Should I be concerned?? Wayne
  15. Okay, here's a problem that has got me stumped. I was heading out on a trip to New Orleans and back when about a day into the trip at a gas station I noticed a problem. My 2005 RSTD wouldn't start up in gear. That is to say, I have the bike in 1st with the clutch pulled - pushed the ignition and nothing... But if I shift to Neutral and hit the ignition the bike with start, then I can shift into a gear. The trip is now over and my bike still ONLY fires up when it is in neutral. Am I going crazy here? I use to be able to start in gear with the clutch pulled. Any ideas what am I missing here?
  16. First of all let me say that I have thought alot about this since yesterday morning. I want to make my feelings clear about some of the posts by inconsiderate members concerning you guessed it Protective gear It is not anyones right duty or responsibility for anyone to comment on whether someone not of your imediate family (you pay there way) on whether a rider does or does not wear there gear.No one tells you to wear your gear so you can stop making posts on threads about whether an injured rider would or would not be in better shape after and accident if they were wearing all or some if any of the protective gear they may or may not own or like to wear.I dont give my friends and addopted family any grief if they do or dont suit up to ride I only wear a helmet because its required in the state I live in.Mini doesnt like me not to wear one but thats between me and her and no one elses concern as far as I look at it. I know that this thread is probably going to be deleted and if that is the case so be it the moderators do a damn fine job of keeping things correct here.feel free not to send me a pm or call me if you dont like my additude about this because I most likely will offend you before you get to many words out. I hope that everyone that has been injured as of late makes a full and complete recovery and that is all you need to concern yourself about with a post of an injured rider.Ask yourself this if you dont chose to put on all of your protective gear before you run to the store to get a loaf of bread or other items and you get into an accident whose fault and concern is it if you crack you head or get some road rash ect? Jeff
  17. Just finnished installing the new clutch in my Venture. New clutch disks and PCW HD spring kit. Whoever did the last job had 3 disks in wrong and the pressure plate not lined up. Not sure if that makes all that much differance but it doesn't jerk when I put it into gear now. The clutch lever isn't much different than it was before. This was an easy install! I HAD to buy new tools to do the job right.....right. Once again thank you all very much for all the info on the clutch. Wayne
  18. Thinking of buying a 83 which is in great condition except that it "suddenly" will not go into 4th or 5th gear. Any ideas on what I might be getting into here. Asking price is $500 and I can do the work myself! Ride safe, Mike
  19. so what are the differences between the 83, which i have, and an 85vr? i found a bike locally, running, but always could use some parts. besides, my 2nd gear just went. will it work?
  20. Recently I noticed one of my head gaskets was leaking a little oil, as it wasn't a lot I continued my planned tour of Nova Scotia while the dealer ordered a set of gaskets (july 1st). I gave the bike to the dealer July 19th, after the usual two rounds of it isn't ready yet, I ordered the wrong gasket set, they gave me the bike back one month to the date after I brought it in. On starting the bike I noticed the Idle was set a little high and could see the windshield visibly shake(never did b4) the exhaust was a little louder than normal and I think I could hear a slight leak. Once I got it out on the road the bike would vibrate, stutter and buck like I was in a too high gear, I can't even acelerate from 5th gear on level ground driving 40mph without downshifting to 3rd. pulled into my driveway and my nieghbor said what happened to your bike it sounds like crap ( he rides a Harley). Took the bike back to the dealer left it another week, returned to be told the shaking and noise was due to a bad rear tire.( admittedly I do need the tires replaced) Remember the bike shakes at idle. if I get the bike rolling downhill at 50mph shift to neutral the bike coasts like it was on carpet. Restart the engine and the shaking starts. This is my thrid Venture so I am pretty sure I know when it is right and when it is wrong. So now what are my options , is there a national Yamaha rep group to escalate service issues? Al
  21. yep. 2nd is jerking and today...CLUNK!...sounds like somethings giving out. ive heard mention of this 2nd gear issue, but, whats the fix?
  22. As a winter project plan to fix the 2nd gear issue on my 84. I've read the how-to articles which are very informative. I read somewhere that Yamaha sells a 2nd gear kit for this repair but can't find the part number. Anyone have it?
  23. Guys, I have owned my RSTD for just under a month. I owned and rode lots of enduro bikes as a young man, have had Kawasaki, Yamaha, and H-D road bikes. At 55 years old, I thought that I knew how to ride albeit it has been a few years since I owned my last. I wrote to you about the whine in the bike, at which MPH and in which gear. There was a boat load of advice about allowing the engine to wind out a bit. One poster responded that he never uses 5th gear until 75 mph. I should have just listened. Yesterday my wife and I took about a 4 hour ride. I just gave way to trust in your advice. I ran along in 3rd gear up until just over 40mph. I used 4th the rest of the time except when we traveled on the 4 lane turnpike at 65 - 75 mph and then used 5th. It was one of the most comfortable and good feeling rides I have ever taken on a bike. That little engine just seems to cook right along just as happy as can be at those rpm's & wheel speed. Thanks for the advice. OH, and by letting it rev a little more in each gear, almost no whining whatsoever. Thanks for the great advice. R.
  24. 2006 RSTD 3500 miles I am second owner. Bought it in Jan 2011. Went on a ride a couple weeks ago rode almost 200 miles no problem. Go to dinner for about 2 hours and its getting cold outside. Get back to the hotel and go to park the bike, back it in then go to put it in gear and it stalls. Pull in clutch won't start in gear... find neutral starts fine put it in gear to pull forward a bit and it stalls. Try this several times and give up for the night. Next morning works fine no issues at all. Fast forward 2 weeks.....wash the bike and dry it.....go for a short blow dry ride and pull back in my driveway do the final wipe down and go to start it and pull in the garage same crap starts again. Won't start in gear but starts fine in neutral. Put it in gear at any rpm and its like someone turns off the key the bike stalls and won't start in gear. WTF is this issue and how do I fix it? Frustrated!
  25. I just finished more or less the install of the final drive bought from skydoc. Many thanks to all who gave me the courage to do this on my own. It is in for the most part. Got to put gear oil in and tighten up bolts and such an install the left exhuast. Not sure but I dont think the rear end is suposed to look like this. The drive shaft is fused to the sleeve and its not like that on the new to me one. David
