  1. In an earlier thread http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=60093 I expressed concern over power loss and low fuel economy at altitude. (See the trip report on page 2) So today I had my RSV run on a dyno to see if some electrical or mechanical problem might be the culprit. The first chart is 'one run' in fourth gear and 'one run' in fifth. The Second chart is 'two runs' in fourth and 'two runs' in fifth. We ran in fifth because that is where I experienced the most problems on my trip. The bike was flawless on the dyno. The rev limiter on my bike clearly cuts off at different RPM depending on which gear it is in. Fifth at about 5600 and fourth at about 6600 rpm. My guess is this is probably because of the speed rating on the stock tires. Both techs at the dealer reported I could expect about a three percent loss of power for each thousand feet in altitude. Since a lot of my riding on the trip was at 5,6, or 7,000 feet that seems consistent with my experience. Horsepower is on the ground and after gear reductions and drive train loss. So it is less than the engine horsepower in the specs.
  2. Finally got to use my Morgan CarbTune today, with the help of Rick Haywood and Dyno Don. Thanks Fellas
  3. I finally got to ride the scooter today, actually took it around a few blocks Thursday to check it out. Somewhat rushed getting it together so I could ride with my cousins and other friends to a bike show at a HD dealer near here. Didn't know they were going to have a dyno setup, for free none the less. I really wasn't ready for a dyno run yet, but the price was right. I haven't synced carbs on bike, mixture screws are close & the TCI still needs dialed in, but I went for it, how embarrassing could it be in front of a 100 HD riders. Was a slight problem hooking dyno up to bike. I don't have plug wires anymore so they couldn't hook tach sensor in. I went to Coil Over Plugs this winter. Without the VBoost activated it hit 97 RWHP, that sucks, last year I had 96 RWHP. Activated the VBoost and it hit 108.96 RWHP. That's 11 more HP with pressing a button. I think with tuning and getting it dialed in 120RWHP is doable. I have located a guy that will bring me into his shop & work with me on setting jetting and fine tuning this thing on a dyno for a reasonable rate. I am close to that point. Didn't get a print out of the dyno, they didn't have a printer set up. I got a mostly unreadable cell phone picture of screen, my cousin is going to email me his attempts at picture when he gets home. At least I didn't embarrass myself totally. My cousin said some of the HD guys were in disbelieve of the numbers. Also, got caught in a hail storm while we where out. Dove for cover in a strip mall under a over hanging store front. Gary
  4. Extreme Sports Yamaha in Sumter SC is having their spring open house event this Saturday, 5/7. As SC locals know, this is a GREAT dealership (just Yamaha's). See the flyer below,, free dyno, burn out pit, bike show, food. Thanks, Mike G http://www.extremesportsyamaha.com/ http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs014/1103168065038/img/32.jpg
  5. On the weekend of August 27-28 some Vmax friends(Vmoa members) and I will be meeting in Topeka for a dyno day. This is the 7th or 8th year for this gathering. Since this will be the first year with the Venture I thought I would invite anyone that would like to meet up and say hi. We usually have a few "other" bikes and almost everyone dynos. We usually take up a collection for the Dyno operator and for The Morley Family that takes care of lunch. A great group of people that I enjoy meeting up with every year. The event takes place at the Topeka HD shop. Usually we are the only ones there. Lots of noise, hanging out and tuning going on. This year there is a ride planned further south on Sat to hit up a car/bike show. Would keep anyone posted that may be interested. Frank
  6. I purchased a new set of Dunlop E3's at STS Powersports in Amherstburg Ontario, and had them installed yesterday. With the 20 per cent discount on the price of the tires they gave me without me even asking, I got both tires for just over the $400 mark out the door. That is darn good pricing for up here in the great white north. While there, I was talking to Mark Lossing, one of the mechanics, and he informed me that he has a Dyno, and will do a basic Dyno run for $40. That is CHEAP. It's a brand new Dyno machine, and he wants to make some money to help pay it off. If you're interested in a Dyno run on your bike, just call STS Powersports and ask for Mark Lossing. He does them off site. STS Powersports is a KTM dealer, but they work on all makes and models, and carry all kinds of accessories. They can order in, usually overnight, most parts etc. These are young guys working hard to make a go of it, and they will do whatever it takes to make you a happy, returning customer. They have a website, just google STS Powersports, and go from there. As far as shops worth going to in this area, they've got my business. gunk:big-grin-emoticon:
  7. OK folks...I know it's kind of late notice but I had posted before that I would try to see if we could get a discount on Dyno runs at a local shop about 4 miles up the road. I had noticed a new sign in front that said "Dyno now available". I stopped and talked to him today. He usually charges $90.00 for a Dyno run that does not include tuning. He said that if we had enough people interested, he would do them for $40.00 each. I personally don't see the need for one but if enough of you are interested, I will call him back tomorrow and let him know. He has to do them in the late evening/night due to the noise and the fact that there is another business next door to him. So...it's your call.
  8. Has anyone put their bike on a dyno before changing pipes and than after muffler change to see HP and torque values? Just wondering if the 2 cylinder mufflers exhaust waves where any different than the 4 cylinder flow.
  9. Just curious if anyone on the site has done a before and after dyno run on their second generation Venture or Royal Star after adding some or all of the following items to improve the performance : 1. Aftermarket slip ons. 2. K&N or other less restrictive air filter. 3. Dyna 3000 or other ignition mod. 4. Jet Kit. I am sure that many people on the site have done some or all of the above and if you didn't confirm the results with a dyno run what did the seat of the pants feel indicate after the mods.
  10. I just added this article from Pegscraper. It is also linked from the tech library. The biggest complaint about the orginal Royal Stars was the lack of power. This does not look to be a cheap solution but the Dyno results show that it is a GREAT solution. If you own an original Royal Star and really want to release the inner beast, this is the solution. http://www.venturerider.org/carbswap/
  11. Fantastic article submitted by Lynn Nicholls. Lack of power was the main complaint about the original Royal Star and according to the Dyno tests...this certainly solves that problem. http://www.venturerider.org/carbswap/
