  1. I know I have been away for awhile, but I have a problem with my 2nd gen. I went to start it yesterday and it wouldn't start. It turns over, but will not stay started for more than about 15-20 seconds. I started it at full choke and it seemed fine and then just kind of fizzled out, it seems like a fuel problem. It cranks fine, and turns over fine the 1st couple of trys, but just won't keep the rpm's and when I cut the choke back it dies. I have not had any problems with starting until this and it had only been 1 week since I last rode with no problems. I have about 80 miles on this tank of gas and thinking that it may be the fuel filter or a batch of bad gas. Any ideas?
  2. Had to light the pilot on the gas heat stove. What happened to the AC weather?
  3. Got the new battery in, added some fresh gas, these things dont run real well on a strong fix of Sea Foam, but once I got the gas in and had her fired up she ran just like she did before I took her apart. Still have a few small items to take care of, the main one being the rear brakes.........aint got none, I forgot to replace the brake fluid after I did the brakes......DUH. other than that she is road ready, I put about 10 miles on her, didnt want to take her to far from home just in case, besides I didnt have the new license sticker on it.......... So here are the final pics.
  4. Presently, Im commuting 128 miles a day. I was wondering, how much did your gas mileage improve after the conversion? Im thinking about it if it'll allow me to ride 1 day without having to stop for gas.
  5. MY '87 VENTURE HAS A HEAL/TOE SHIFTER ON IT AND A CUSTOM SEAT AND I FIND WY LEGS ARE BENT BACK UNDER ME WHEN I SHIFT OR USE BREAK PEADLE. THE SEAT MAKES ME SIT ALMOST ON THE GAS TANK AND PUTS THOSE CONTROLS UNDER ME. I HAVE A 30" INSEAM BUT I AM 6' TALL. Any IDEAS??? THANKS!
  6. Hey guys. I am in the process of making a new fuse block from the glass fuse holders found at your local Radio Shack, but I think I might have a clearance issue. The original fuse block is short so it fits comfortably under the "Gas Tank" cover. I bought a small water proof case to mount the fuses in but I don't know if the case will clear under there, because I don't have the "Gas Tank" Cover to snap over it. (It's in storage) Can someone please tell me approximately how many inches I have to work with under there and how tall the fuse block case can be once bolted down. I'm gonna use the old bolt holes. Thank you so much for your help on this! Chris
  7. Hi guys havent been on the site much lately as we have had a lot going on. I havent run the bike much this summer as the wife had an operation and we are buying a house out in the country so summer was pretty much shot. ANYWAY I stared the bike up the other day to take for a little ride, as it was warming up I ran back into the house and when I came back the bike shut off as it had run out of gas (hate my screwy fuel guage). Went and got gas and put 50 miles on. I noticed a gas smell and leak from one of the overflows, so I put half a can of seafoam and ran it another 20 miles and got it home and it is still leaking gas from one of the overflow lines. Ran it yesterday and same thing. This happens about twice a year since I got the bike 4 years ago and seafoam usually clears it up after a few days. I had the carbs off and cleaned 2 years ago and they were very clean and in excellent shape. I even put another in line filter between the fuel pump and the carbs when I had the carbs taken off. My question is am I the only one with this problem or am I just missing something? I am great at the bodywork and cosmetic stuff but not the greatest when it comes to the mechanical end of things. Any help would be appreciated as I get a little more frustrated every time this happens to the point of thinking I want to get rid of her. But I love this bike and just want to get this straightened out once and for all, but with buying a new house money is a little tight and I dont want to put a fortune into her right now. Thanks in advance, Paul
  8. Ok... so I've had this problem a few times since getting the bike: I'll be riding and everything seems fine, and the engine simply stops running. Acts like it's out of gas. it's happened 3 or 4 times- and it seems like turning the fuel petcock back and forth is solving the issue: Here's the question- I think it may be simply me not understanding how the reserve/main tank work together. 1. Does the fuel guage show the total gas or just the main tank? THe other day it cut off with a bar left on the guage. Switched it to reserve and back again a couple times... and it seemed to work again. 2- if someone could explain the relationship between the 2 fuel tanks, the petcock and the gas gauge, I think I would be able to troubleshoot better. rs (I know I'm probably spelling petcock wrong... I mean the tank chooser switchy thing- That' a technical description...)
  9. My 2006 Midnight Venture just turned over 50,000 miles on this recent road trip and I experienced the BEST gas mileage ever on a tank of gas!! wow.. I road for close to 150 miles before pulling over for fuel at a regular fuel stop and pumped in 12 litres of fuel.. 56.8 MPG Imperial and 47.3 MPG US 70 mph in 5th with all tail winds made a huge diff.. Big beautiful day, 5 hours of traveling to do and I just decided to roll softly.. and was surprised at the mileage.. albeit boring After that fuel stop I slammed it in 4th and rolled with the fast traffic to get home the rest of way hehe.. amazing.. the fuel mileage was significantly worse on the last leg
  10. What is the possibility of using a 2nd fuel petcock on a 2nd Gen to get full utilization of that big old gas tank? Boomer.....who's thinking out loud here.
  11. I took the fairing off of the ninja 250 that my son rides to fix a major crack in the fairing with plastexs. That repair worked great. Unfortunately, when I reinstalled the fairing, I missed one of the washers where the fairing attaches to the gas tank and screwed the bolt in too far and punctured the gas tank. So my question is "How do I patch a gas tank?" Iowa Guy
  12. I am at work, so i don't have a choice. well i could not show, but i do need gas money. So, what are some of the reasons members are on the forums and not riding?? dale in La
  13. Long story short, the engine idles a little rough, has poor power and won't run without the choke on. It'll idle with the choke off, but it dies when you try to take off. Had the bike sitting in storage for about 2 years. Gas was untreated. It didn't run at all when I started working on it. Here's what I've done: I thought it was bad gas, so i drained the tank and fuel lines/pump/filter. Put it back together with fresh gas. Sprayed a ton of Thrust and Deep Creep into the carb and it runs now. Put Seafoam into the carb, and into the fuel tank, which helped the idle a very small amount, but didn't make a big difference. I did notice that one carb moves more than the other ones. Any advice on what I should do next? I'm not 100% sure if the carbs were varnished, and if they were varnished, if they're cleaned out now. Is there a way to check if the carb is clean enough? Should I sync the carbs if they may be partially varnished, or is that a waste of time?
  14. I know it's been said many time on here, but I would not feel right it I did not give Rick Kudos for working on my seat. We just returned from the international rally on Sunday (we took an extra week in Hot Springs) and there is no way I could have made that trip before getting my seat worked on. 16 days and 3,600 miles in all. I know that is not a lot for some people, but before getting the seat worked I had a hard time riding gas stop to gas stop. I would have to say that is now my favorite mod since getting the RSV 2 years ago. Also, it is probably the cheapest!
  15. Why does the search engine refuse to use any search term with fewer than four letters? I can think of lots of searches that might need a three letter key word: Oil Fan LED or LCD Bar Air Gas DOT, SAE, JIS, ISO (and other acronyms) Cap (i.e. gas cap can't be searched) I'm sure I could come up with a bunch more if I tried - I have actually hit several of these on more than one occasion when searching. Is this part of the forum package or is it something that can be changed? Thanks Ross
  16. Ok....I've decided my gas tank is going to have to be dealt with. The bike had been stored for nine years before I bought it. The PO had run it once in a while and it had been in a heated garage all that time and the tank had been kept full (according to PO). The tank was checked as one of the first things during my inspection. Very little rust to be seen when I bought it. During the two winters I have owned it the bike has been kept in an unheated garage and the fuel treated with Sea Foam and Stabil during storage. Run it a bit every week and top off the gas with fresh. During the summer months I keep it topped off every few days unless I'm on the road then I'll let down to the last bar. But as luck may have it the rust is getting worse and getting to be a problem. It's clogging my fitler (3rd one) and getting into the carbs now. So here is my game plan after a lot of research on products. I'll say this is what I'm using and continue on unless you can convince me I'm going about it the wrong way. I'm pulling the tank and starting out with a alcohol and steel brad and BB cocktail to scuff up the interior and break up the rust. It's not heavy rust by any means but it's there. It surprised me from the looks of the tanks interior that I'm even having a problem this severe. Following that will be a soak with BEHR # 911 Concrete Etcher, a phospheric acid to break down the rest of the rust. The final step will be a treatment with Phenol Novolac Sealer from Caswells. Seems like a decent product for the coating. The tank is solid and no leaks or weak spots. Once I got the tank flushed out and found an inspection mirror that would fit inside I found most the rust problem in the lower end. So any advice or comments on the products I'm looking to use? Thanks Mike
  17. Having some issues with my gas gauge on the '06. It all seems to have started after my last trip when I had the magnetic tank bag attached but that just might be a coincidence. Never had an issue with the tank bag on the '03. The gauge won't show full anymore, always one bar down and after about 50 miles or so it reads all over the map. Some times no bars will show at all and some times it will read anywhere from nothing to 3/4. The low fuel light and count down meter seem to be still working but I don't trust it. Had to start using the reserve valve again just in case. I don't remember reading about anyone having issues with the gas gauge before. My have to go for my first warranty job on this bike.
  18. Not a favorite, just a road report. This is an '08 report. Ride: July 2008, Weekday, AM Gas Available: Fields, Denio Junction. Direction: South Avg Speed: 75 Flora: High grass and desert to low desert. Fauna Encounters: 0 Subjective Temp: Balmy to Warm. Road Condition: I'ts been a year, but I remember generally good. Long straights with a few well marked sweepers. Fields is very tiny. Not sure I'd count on getting gas there without making inquiries first. Denio Junction has gas just a few miles south of Denio. Cars Passing Same Direction: 0 Cars Passed Same Direction: I want to say 0. Maybe 1 or 2. It was a while ago. Cars Passed Opposite Direction: 1 or 2 This is a lonely road.
  19. Ever since the sinus surgery that is. But one side effect... my gas smells a lot worse! I'm gonna have to give the Doc hell for that!
  20. Realizing that most of us with any sense ride rice burners, my son has a 2002 Superglide Harley, carborated, and his gas tank has sprung a leak. Buying a new one cost too much on a marine's paycheck, especially since he just found out this week he will be a daddy again (boy this time). Any ideas where we might be able to find a used tank? Do they have junk yards, etc for motorcycles? I know I'm scratching in the dark, but what the heck. You guys and gals have come through before I thought I would try again. Thanks.
  21. I don't know how to create a poll, but, I'm curious as to the biggest fill-up you've had. A couple times I've done more than 5.8 gallons, but, today was my biggest: 5.976 Gallons. Talk about running on fumes! Guess you could say I just about maxed out the available gas. And some say you can't get 6 gallons in the tank.
  22. I noticed that the MK-II Ventures dont have a keylock for the gas cap lid, just a thumb turn type instead of a key lock type. Does anyone have one of those keyless gas cap lid locks they are willing to sell? thanks.
  23. I am having a really hard time cleaning off the tar from a set of HD mufflers I have purchased to put on my RSV. I have used the following products with little to no effect. WD-40 Chrome Polish (Mothers and Turtle Wax) Never Dull Tar and Bug Remover and even GAS.... What am I missing here?? There has to be a way to do this and get the results....
  24. Dont know how else to title this and wanted all to know IF similar problems. OK Goose Remember we chatted about the Gas Smell and how I know of members that never have to use their choke? WELL, I no longer smell gas! Each day I have started the bike and have yet to use the choke! I guess either the Float resetting or the new plugs had something to do with it..I really think it was the float level as far off as that one was. ALSO,I do not think it has EVER ran smoother. I havnt given it a good run yet due to tring to gather screws I lost and now going to repair cracks in the fairing at windshield mount. Anyway Thanks, its nice to not smell the gas anymore! As far as the 44K goose mentioned in a previous post I have used it for 2 years or so and it is good stuff. My carbs on the inside were spotless.
  25. How come gas prices are so much higher in WV? RandyA http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_gastemperaturemap.aspx
