  1. Went for a ride this morning and my CB will not turn on. Radio worked fine. CB has been working fine until this morning. Tried a search on here, but the words CB and on are too short to use as keywords...:-) I did recently have the seat off to install an Ultimate backrest. I'm not sure where the CB is, but there are wires that run along the top of the rear fender under the seat. Did I mess something up with them? Open for ideas on what to start checking. Scott....
  2. Hello! I just purchased a 1983 Venture and when I rode it home the idle stuck at about 2500. The bike starts and runs fine, but the idle will not slow down. Any suggestions?
  3. Does anyone ever hear of problems starting their Royal Star in cooler weather? I've had this problem for three years now, and it's now starting again. I've put a new battery on, changed the plugs, air filter, brought it to the stealership, nothing helps. It is fine all summer, but as soon as it gets cold at night, I can't start it in the morning. I was thinking maybe something with the choke, but when it finally does fire up it is revving really high, like the choke is working fine. I hooked a lamp onto the engine all night and that seemed to help, but I'd rather solve the problem. This is my favorite time of year to ride and I hate getting stranded at night, fighting the starter. Any ideas?
  4. Hi to all, I did some work on my forks and put it back together today all was working fine last night. Now i have no lights, headlight, turn signals and rear brake light. Now when i hit my turn signal they work fine and when I apply my front or rear brakes the brake light works. Headlight completely inop and no driving lights at all. Looked at harness no pinched wires at steering stop. Any help woud be welcomed. Screaming red
  5. Hi Guys, I need some help. Parked my 84 Venture for about 6 months. Was running fine when I last rode it. Put in fresh fuel and bike started right up. Engine seems to be working just fine. Went to put it in gear and the bike stalled. Checked the kick stand switch and all was good. If I idle up the engine quite a bit and then go into gear the bike will move but it's like it doesn't want to . If I try to manually move the bike it rolls around just fine. I am assuming that there is a transmission issue. What could have gone wrong just sitting there and what can I check out myself before I have t haul the bike 70 miles to the closest yamaha dealer?? Thanks...John
  6. I know ya'll were headed out on a big trip sometime now, I just forgot when you were supposed to be back. I presume since you haven't been around to lately, you are doing fine, out of contact completely or doing something we don't want to hear about anyways . Hope all is going well and you two are enjoying your trip!
  7. Disclaimer: this is not a knock on those who chose to go to a different model. To each their own, and I mean that. Your reasons are all valid ones. I always wanted a Harley but when I got my RSV it was love at first sight. This is just one member's insight on why he still likes the RSV. After reading threads over the past year about members leaving the RSV and getting another bike, mainly because of the lack of upgrades, I said to myself, self, what do you dislike so much about the RSV that would make you part ways with it? I found nothing that would make me give up the ol' girl. Im a low tech kind of guy and the RSV is just fine for me. Would I pay the 20k MSRP for a new one now..no way. The technology hasnt caught up enough to warrant that kind of price. Harley and GW have increased their technical advantages over the years to kinda warrant that kind of price. But, like I said, for me the RSV suits my needs. Im comfortable on it. I can handle it just fine. Wife falls asleep on the back. And it still looks purty....Put untold amounts of upgrades over the years to make it just the way I like it. So, ill just enjoy my old bike a little while longer...
  8. i have an 83 i believe that is first generation. i have no spark on any cylender. was told could be ground. going to start by checking ground and then proceed to tci. any other suggestions. bike ran fine then just would not start. i just recently replaced the guage asssembly but it ran fine for a week after that
  9. Thaks in advance for any info. you can give me on this problem.. MY 86 Venture developed a bad TCI box last year.. Bought one on Ebay and it worked fine until just the other day. I lost spark to the front cylinder and hooked my old TCI up and had spark - so I knew it was the box. Then had a family member who is an elect. tech replace diodes and resolder everything, etc. I put that reapired box on the bike and had spark all the way around and it ran fine - FOR ONE DAY! Again - i lost spark to that front cyl. He again repaired it and I now have spark to all four cylinders but have developed a "bogging down" when applying more than a couple thousand rpm's of throttle. It sits and idles fine but when applying throttle, it backfires a little and boggs down. Is it just a bad TCI or did I mess up and unhook something under the airbox that is causing this or ??? Again - thanks if anyone can help.. jkit02@yahoo.com
  10. I have had this on the bike for about 3 years now. It worked fine until last year. When I have the turn signal going and hit the brake the light stops blinking but when I release the brake it starts right back up. I hooked the trailer to the car and it works fine. I have checked all the wiring connections and they all look good. We want to get everything working before we take our 10 day trip :biker:in October so am I over looking anything? If not I will just have to buy a new modulite. Thanks
  11. Just wanted to let everyone who doesn't know this about some old Vermont motorcycles laws. The State Police are now stopping people and checking to see if they have at least four square inches of reflective material on their helmets, this one has been on the books for awhile. I'm not sure of the fine but any fine is too much. The other law is about your license plate, it has to be horizontal and not vertical. I went to get my Hardtail inspected and had to turn my plate around, The guys at the shop were only doing their job. This one again could've cost me some money never mind points! The Killington Classic is coming up soon and the rumor is the State Police will have a "motorcycle checkpoint" close by, same thing as Americade! Don't give them the chance to tag you!! Joshua
  12. sometimes my class system gives me an E1 error and other times it works just fine. any thoughts on whats causing it?
  13. Is there any way to check wear on front brakes without pulling them? I've got 29,000 miles on them and they still work fine. Don't know how many miles you can get out of them. Glenn
  14. I thought I would toss it in here for y'all in case someone was interested. I have seen it twice and it sounded and looked fine both times. I know nothing else about the bike. The owners are good folk too! http://www.thegraphiclibrary.com/yamaha.html The Graphics Library is my Bro's company.
  15. Was curious if its possible to replace the trans gears without pulling the motor? I know you have to split the case but I do see the one side frame rail comes apart. I have limited room in my garage, so even if it takes longer thats fine, i have all winter.
  16. RSV 2009 IT HAS 1060 MILES ON IT RAN FINE THE NIGHT I PARKED IT. DIDN'T SOUND RIGHT SAT MORNING WHEN I FIRED IT UP TO GO TO PENN. GRAND CANONS. 17. Well, I got home last night around midnight - most of the trip back was great, but certainly not without incident. Ponch, BoomerCPO, Gunboat and I all left Don's fairgrounds together Sunday morning around 0930, intending on taking the back roads to enjoy the ride instead of beating ourselves to death on the slab for another 1,200 miles. The day started out great, with really nice temperatures and some truly wonderful roads, including one that seemed like the Ohio cousin to the famed Dragon's Tail - just a bit more classy wither fewer scars around the edges. But when we tried to escape Ohio by crossing the river at Maysville, either Kentucky boarder guards or aliens must of snuck up behind us and nabbed one of our members! Gunboat had been hanging way back for a couple of hours, but kept telling us on the radio that all was fine and not to wait for him. He was catching up at each stop sign when we had the chance to wait for him, and when we got to the light at the Maysville bridge, he did get up to us just as the light turned green and we headed across the river. Unfortunately, he didn't make it through the light! I told him on the radio we would wait for him on the other side, but before we got across, he said the light had changed again and he was rolling. So at this point, he wasn't any further behind than he had been staying so far. We told him on the radio what route we were following, and he even repeated the route numbers back, so everything seemed fine. But then the aliens swooped in and grabbed up both him and his daughter! His radio responses stopped, and several miles down the road we turned around and went back looking for them - but they seemed to have simply vanished into the hot and humid air of early afternoon. And to make matters worse, Gunboat had lost his cell phone that weekend, so not only did we not have any way to call him, but he probably didn't have any of our phone numbers available either. After about an hour of looking, waiting and calling on the radio, we finally figured we had to start moving again before we melted into big grease spots on the hot asphalt. We still haven't heard from him about what happened and just what orifices the aliens probed, but hopefully he'll fill us in soon. (Just for the record Don, we did stay on the same route we told ya, all the way down to Glasgow! Well, mostly, anyway - when 62/68 split, we stayed with US 68. We couldn't imagine how you might have gotten ahead of us, but I looked for your bike at every gas station and restaurant we passed.) The rest of Sunday went reasonably well, except for the constant discussion and puzzlement about Gunboat. We really felt bad about leaving him lost somewhere in northern Kentucky, but couldn't see what other options we had. We hit some great roads and finally packed it in around Glasgow, Kentucky, 444 miles for the day - not all that many, but typical for back road riding. Monday morning the forecast was for hot and nasty, and it was already withering to just step outside at 0700. We decided the back roads and small towns just wouldn't be all that much fun any more in those conditions and the best option was to just hit the slab and try to get the heck outa Dodge as fast as we could. We had an uneventful ride over to Memphis, where Boomer peeled off to get lost in the Louisiana swamps while Ponch and I kept on to Texarkana. Everything seems fine right up to the point where we stopped for the final gas in Texarkana, after which Ponch was gonna spin off towards Houston and I would continue into Fort Worth. But as I walked out of the store with a full mug of water to get on the bike, I thought the back tire just might be a tad low - didn't really look like it, but always better to check those things out, ya know? Closer inspection found a 2" screw in the tire, right at the edge of the tread, and angled such that you could feel a bulge where the screw was pressing on the inside of the sidewall! And this on a brand new E3 I just mounted the day before leaving for Ohio. Not surprisingly, as soon as I pulled out the screw, the tire deflated instantly. And here I was still about 200 miles from home, at the end of the day, and with a tire that almost certainly could not be safely repaired. What to do, what to do . . . Just for the heck of it, I stuck a plug in the tire and it held air fine, but there was a noticeable bulge along the sidewall where the screw had damaged the belts and inner surface, allowing some air to get trapped under the outer layer of rubber. The bulge wasn't very big, but that didn't change the fact that the tire was severely damaged and it's safety compromised. After a few spins and donuts around the parking lot where it handled fine, the tire didn't show any signs of the bulge growing. Ponch offered to follow me to the next stop down the highway, so I decided to see how it would take a few miles of low speed running. After a couple of stops to keep checking the tire and seeing no changes, we decided to shoot for a town about 30 miles down the road. We made it there without incident, and the tire still wasn't looking any worse, so my confidence grew enough I decided to just try and make it home while the temperature was cooler and there wasn't much traffic on the road. I put my wife on notice that I might have to call her to bring the truck to rescue me and the bike, bid farewell and tremendous thanks to Ponch and is lovely and long-suffering wife for sticking with me while I chanced that first scary leg on the questionable tire, and gingerly rolled on down the highway. Took me a few extra hours to finish that last stretch because of the slower speeds and constant stops to inspect the tire, but made it without any further problems. About 700 miles yesterday, and I think I pinched off a few pieces of my seat during that last 200 miles! What a trip! Had a great time at the carnival, changed some tires there, adjusted some valves, and tuned a lot of bikes. Met some new wonderful folks, as well as lots of old friends, and added some new experiences that I'll not forget. Thanks to all for a great maintenance "day"! Goose
  18. just purchesed a 1988 royal I am new to yamaha and dont know to much about them. new to internet to so my spelling will be bad. after riding for a couple days, the rpm drop to o when I am setting at a red light and it starts back firing. Give it some gas and it runs fine. It runs fine downd the road no missing or back fireing. could this be the diaphram in the carb or could it be electical. where can I find a service for it.I have been reading alot of the threads on this sight and sure helps I am glad I joined. thanks Motorhead 704
  19. hey gang... kumho on back, pirelli rear reversed on front. Couple spins around the neighborhood seems fine. Different, but fine. Time will tell!!!
  20. I fear the fuel pump has given up the ghost on my 06. Won't start at all with the choke out....maybe 1-2 clicks from the fuel pump when I turn the key. Tank full of fresh gas....new fuel filter....everything else working fine. They shoot horses don't they? Boomer.....well stuck for a while it looks like.....sigh.
  21. OK, I am really confused on this. My new bike has the extra lights which are set in chrome all over the back of the rig and a simple switch to turn them on and off, which works fine. I was replacing it with a rocker switch that has an LED (so it now needs it's own ground). When I flip the switch the on/off functionality of the switch works fine but the LED only goes on for a brief moment before the switch engages (basically just flashes on then back off). Any thoughts on why this LED wouldn't work. For the supply I am using a blue wire that comes from the fuse box. The load is the one I am assuming goes to the lights. I ran a ground wire right to the negative terminal of the batter, do I need a different ground point? I also went and got another identical switch in case there was something wrong with the rocker I bought first. Thanks!
  22. Anyone got any ideas about what sequence of diagnostic checks I might make for this problem? - I go to start my bike......the battery is close to dead.....might get half a turn on the starter, then just clickety click. (this is after it's been out, running around town several times already this Spring.........I'm in the land of ice and snow, so we're now "in season") - I put the battery on the 4-amp charger for an hour - The bike then fires up fine. Take if for a half hour ride. Stop for coffee, whatever. Starts fine again. Come home and park it. Next day, starts fine. Same routine. - HOWEVER......leave the bike parked for two or three days.....and, bingo, back to line #1. Questions: 1. How do I find out if it's the battery or the charging system? 2. Is there a particular reading I should get off the battery at each point in my scenarios, above? Thanks for any guidance. (Ordinarily, I'd just go out and buy a new battery........but I thought I did that LAST year!! Alzheimer's strikes deep, though......and I'm not really sure!! LOL) Mike
  23. My 85 is at last on the road and I will enjoy every moment. I would like to thank everyone who has ever added their input to this site. What a big help. The weather is fine and all summer lays ahead. Planned trips are to Sudbury Ontario and the White Mountains in NH. Ryan
  24. Is there a way that I can prolong the life of 2nd gear on my 84 VR. My thought was to skip 2nd gear when going through the gears from a stop. Maybe just use it when turning on to side streets or something. Just a thought. I have 33,000 on the bike and 2nd gear so far is fine. Just became a member, this forum is great!!
  25. When I am in a thread and I try to use the mark forums read under the quick links at the bottom of the page, I get the following message. If I use the one at the top of the page, it works fine. Only the bottom one does this. It's happened a couple times now. I can't say this is terribly important. Other links work fine. But I thought you might like to know.
