1. Coming down to the final days here in Michigan, Have most everything packed up and the big truck is coming Saturday. Will load sat and sun and be on the road monday. And be moving into new place in Hillsboro NC on wed. Getting excited!
2. I anyone is coming through Illinois headed to Don's in Oberlin and need a place to crash for the night you are welcome at our house
3. Weather channel says theres a suprise in store for BIG TOM coming his way.
4. So, I have had several helmets hooked up on the wall in my garage. One set of black helmets have been in the same spot since 2003, when I got rid of my black 83 1st gen and bought my 99 silver. The last week I have noticed this tiny bird coming in and out of the garage. Sitting outside today, in between getting the garage set-up to get back to working on the bike in earnest, I heard a loud chirping coming from a tree outside the house. The bird seemed to be stressed about something. I just happen to glance over to the black helmets on the wall and notice straw coming from behind the helmet. I go over and look closely. Sure enough, the bird is building a nest in both helmets. I go inside and leave the garage door open. In about 10 minutes, said bird made a dash for the helmets. So, it looks like im going to have some new garage mates for a bit. Ill just leave it alone, but I thought its all pretty cool. Sorry, I cant take pics of it. My New Fuji Camera wont work with my Mac and until I find out why the Mac keeps rejecting the pics I cant download any here. Wonder whats gonna wander into my garage next........
5. Has anyone made plans to hookup with other VRs for the trip east.I'm coming from Illinois,it would be nice to ride into WNY with company.
6. I just put in new plugs, fuel filter, adjusted the carbs and took her out for a couple of long runs 120+ miles both times. Everything was just fine including turning her off and restarting. The rains came and she sat for a week. When I went out to go for another trip I hit the starter the entire bike went dead. I turned the key off waited a minute and turned it back on and all the lights etc. come on just like she's ready to start , but she won't start. I get a click coming from what sounds like under the bike on the right side. If it was a car I'd think the starter was out, but before I start taking off/replacing parts...Anybody have any ideas or suggestions what it might be or where I might start looking? Thanks George
7. I liked it. But OTD price was 26k for the 4 door. Intellichoice rates the 5 year cost as as excellent. Any opinions out there. I know there are TDI forums and I ve looked at those but that's. Like coming here asking about Ventures. Anyone been down this road and bought something else? Thanks RSTDdog
8. Good afternoon everyone. Went for a little ride today and noticed my kickstand had a bit of oil on it when I stopped. For whatever reason, when I first seen it I didn't think much of it. (Not sure why it didn't register right away.) Anyway, when I came back to the bike there was a couple of drips under the overflow hoses pictured here. It seems the leak was coming from the second hose from the left. I checked my oil and it seemed to be OK. I had the same issue happen last summer - only one time. It was fine after that. This is the first time this year it's happened. There's been no oil change done recently, however it's just about due. The only time it happened last year it was about 1000 miles into the most recent oil change. Then nothing for a long time. Now again. I guess I don't understand what's causing it. Also, can anyone tell me what each of those hoses is the overflow for. I'm assuming gas, oil, antifreeze, and ???. I'm not sure which is which - other than that second one, based on the oil coming from it. Any assistance would be great.
9. Hey gang., Is there a way to fix this broken wire coming from the CB Side? There is only a small nubby coming out the end now. any help would be great! Thanks, Jeff
10. Does anyone have a front pillow tuffed seat laying around from a RSV they want to get rid of for a decent price, mine is coming apart and I dont want to replace it with something differant and I cant afford to have it recovered right now.
11. Thought some might be interested in this rally in Athens, TX. If I hear about a group of VR riders coming I will set up some good rides for the VR Group. Mavrick
12. Hi all Today is the day after many hrs in the garage out of Christys hair. Im getting to paint the new bikes tour pack. The heat has been on since yesterday. The 2nd coat is on starting to look like something now. this would have so much nicer if the PO had not put all those pics on the bike but hey its coming. I know I need pics they will be coming soon now. Bull463
13. -Good morning to all, I need the measurements of all the brake hoses for a 1984 VR? There is a manufacturer That is on E-BAY today but I need to give them the information so they can build me a set in stainless steel. I also need the clutch hose length. Thanks for the help I know is coming as always. Just want to say that I am overwhelmed when I think of all the knowledge that I have access to because of all the good work running this site.
14. My RSTD started groaning from the rear end. I replaced the tires back in November and thought I put enough grease on all the rear end components. Very surprised that it is groaning all things considered. Anyway I have a YSS shock coming so I think I will go ahead and replace it by removing the rear wheel route.
15. Took the bike out today to run some errands. On my way home I had to stop at COSTCO to pick up a few things for CHRISTmas Eve dinner. Traffic sucked as everybody was turning left into the parking lot. Went past COSTCO to make a u-turn back into the lot. A young male (18-22ish) was in a small red car in front of me. I could tell he was on his cell phone, I was ticked as I wanted him to concentrate on making his u-turn so I could make mine. It was then that I saw a guy in a wheel chair coming down the sidewalk, crossing the entrances of a couple of business on that side. I had to wonder where he was coming from, as there was nothing to the east of where he was coming from. You see, this guy had one arm, and one good leg. He was pushing with his right leg, while pushing/spinning the rear wheel with his right arm. He was working VERY hard at each push/spin. I watched how much impact some gravel on the wheelchair ramp had as he went up the 8% wheelchair ramp slope. I think I was just in awe on how hard this guy was working to get somewhere. I kept wondering where he was coming from and how far he had already gone. The kid in the red car finally made his u-turn. About time ! Then it was my turn. As I turned I saw the red car turn into a business parking lot. Next thing I know, the kid had jumped out and walked up to the wheelchair guy. A brief conversation had the young man pushing the wheelchair up the road as I passed. I pulled into COSTCO. As I ran inside I kept thinking about what I had just witnessed. That kid committed to pushing that wheelchair.. How far ? A couple of blocks ? A mile ? I ran through COSTCO grabbing my stuff while thinking about that kid pushing the wheelchair. It was then when I decided that I wanted to get out of there ASAP. I wanted to see if I could either push the next mile, give the kid a ride back to his car, or at least shake his hand. I got in line and kept thinking about what I had seen. I only had three small things to buy. The ladies in front of me turned to me and insisted that I go ahead of them. ( 2nd nice gesture I had seen in the last 15 minutes. ) I checked out and ran to my bike. I rode my motorcycle up a mile to the west, turned around and then to the south. Couldn’t find either of them. Don’t know where they both went. Finally went back to where the car was parked and couldn’t find that either. All I know two things now; There is a mom and dad somewhere that should be very proud of their son, and that the next time I want to be the guy who does it, not the one who just thinks about it.
16. I was just writing to DirtSquirt about his bike and asked him if and when he was going to be in Sturgis this coming year of 2012. I mentioned starting a new thread where we could post our dates to be in Sturgis so we can get together while we're there. I'd really like to meet some more of the VentureRider Brothers in person. Phoneman1981 & I met quite a few of the members in Cody last summer @ the International Rally. We are planning on being in Sturgis both weekends this coming summer. Let's get together next summer & have a Mini Rally in Sturgis. Any Ideas??????
17. If you like antiques, and have 20 minutes to spare, take a look at these videos. Unbelievable that someone could amass, or even find that much stuff in a lifetime... The auction is coming up next weekend. I just wanna know how they're gonna do it in 3 days??? Did you catch the '41 4-cylinder Indian?? 18. I have a small oil leak. Attaching a few pics. The leak is coming what looks like a connector coming from just above the exhaust and the back side of the engine. There is a hose connected to this but it is leaking at the point it comes out of the engine. Sorry for the lack of technical expertise and hope the pictures explain what I have a hard time putting into words!!

This video is about 12 min long...but worth it. It talks about Americans coming together...but I'd like to think that most people would do the same thing! http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthread.php?136581-BoatLift-An-Untold-tale-of-September-11-Resilience
20. I have a 2008 Venture...I'm very frustrated right now with my dealer trying to diagnose my bike. I'm on my third battery in 8 months. They put the third one in a couple of days ago and from the conversation I think mostly because they don't have a clue. What has been happening is that if I don't ride for a couple of weeks the battery was dying...so I thought there may be a draw on the battery...The dealer said that he was only seeing about a 1.2 Miliamp draw coming from my GPS set up. At first he told me that would drain my battery in two weeks...then when he sent me home with my battery charged back up...it was dead the next day. They did all their troubleshooting and finally they said that it was another bad battery. They put the battery in a couple of days ago...I went riding today and when I got back I noticed a noise coming out of the battery...it sounds almost like its sizzling. I don't think that it should do that...It is still making the noise and the bike has been in my garage for over 3 hours now. I asked about the voltage regulator and they told me they checked it...any suggestions at this point? Thanks...Dee
21. I would like to get a head count on how many people we have coming to St. Jude on Oct. 1. So if you are coming and bringing guest, which I know some are, please post how many you plan or might have. Jason, if you could get me a count on how many NARR riders will be there, that would be great, because we may have to have more than one guide for the tour.
22. Help!!! I am supposed to be taking a long trip starting tomorrow and my 07 is leaking Antifreeze. There are a couple small drips coming from the rear finned cylinder cover on the left side. I removed the cover and found where it appears to be coming from. But I have no clue what it is. It appears to be a 4th screw hole towards the bottom of the cylinder. I guess it could've blown from somewhere else, but it sure doesn't look like it. - There are no other Antifreeze trails except below it. Have any of you seen this before or have any ideas what is going on? Craigr
23. I took the week off to ride around. It's been beautiful in WI this week and I've put about 1000 miles on the bike just putzing around. No serious rides, just here and there with no real purpose. It's been fun. Anyway, my travels today took me to my local dealer. My sales guy was interested in taking a look at the mods to my bike (flanders bars, Road King exhaust being the main ones he was interested in). Well, I was getting ready to leave and backed out of the stall and noticed a wet spot where I'd been parked. I said, "well at least I'm in the right place for a leak to start!!!" So, they pulled the bike into the shop and took a peek. The tech looked it over and said it was coming from the overflow hose on the gas tank. That has never happened before and I've got just over 10,000 miles on the bike and have been in the exact same situation many times before - i.e. warm day with a half tank of fuel. That leads me to two questions which I was hoping to get some thoughts on. First, as long as I've owned the bike I've never had a leak from that hose. Why now? I could completely understand if I over filled the tank but that wasn't the case with only a half a tank. Second and more importantly, the liquid that was coming out of the hose smelled like gas but had the consistency of oil. Any ideas? I asked the tech about it and he said if I'd never experienced a leak before from that hose, who knows what was in it when the fuel started coming out. Huh!!! That didn't make any sense to me at all so I thought I'd better ask all you experts. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thank, Les
24. Put some new LED lights on my 2009 RSV. I put them right next to the raditor right next to the ferring. They look pretty good they are chrome with 18 lights in each pod. Try them out and see how they work. PS please over look the dirt on my bike Here is the link for the LED lights they cost a whole $14.99 with free shipping. They are coming from China and they are water resistance. They have two colors blue and white. Good Luck sorry it took me a while to get the link on. 25. I've been riding (at times off and on) for 34 years on 10 different bikes. I'd guesstimate I have close to 200K miles in that time. I've obviously had my share of close calls, and in fact I've been hit (slight bumps) three times quite a few years ago, but I have never been involved in an actual accident or gone down. Until Sunday afternoon... My 17 year-old son and I were headed to one of our local mountain areas to do some camping. I was towing our Cycle-Kamp trailer, and Matthew was riding what is now his Suzuki Boulevard C50T. It's only about a 150 mile ride, with the last 60 or so on Hwy 38, a scenic twisty mountain road. It was a nice sunny day, just very hot at the lower altitudes. It's not uncommon for a late afternoon thunder storm in the area, and we had seen the clouds indicating we may run into it, but I was hoping to miss it. But the rains did get us, and it was pouring down pretty good. Kind of a bummer to deal with, but certainly nothing new. Then it began to hail. The size of marbles, and it was coming down hard. And we were less than 10 miles from our campground. I was more concerned about my son, so I was looking for a suitable spot to pull off. I saw a potential area and started to slow down. I was going about 40 mph, on a slight decline and into a sweeping left curve. As I tapped the brakes, I felt what I think was the trailer probably coming around to the right behind me. Not necessarily jack knifing, but it was pushing the back of the bike to the left. I knew immediately I was in trouble, but for a second I thought I could correct it and ride it out. But I didn't. I went down to the right, and I came off the bike then, sliding about 40 or 50 feet. The bike apparently flipped over to the other side and slid a little more as well. I remember thinking to keep my head up and my hands up (I was wearing fingerless gloves), and I remember seeing me and the bike going towards a Chevy Tahoe coming the other way, and praying that he would stop. As I came to a stop I appeared to be unhurt and was able to get to my feet right away. Thankfully my son had been able to somehow stop safely, but he was a mess. I could hear him screaming as I was sliding along. Then I guess he didn't see me for a couple seconds, and he panicked even more. He came running to me balling, and just held on. He couldn't stop crying. The Tahoe not only had stopped, but he pulled across the road to block traffic. And several cars behind Matthew stopped. I had heard a woman in a car that was in the pull off saying "Oh my God, he's getting up!" The man driving the Tahoe came over to help me pick up the bike and push it to the side. At first glance the damage looked significant, and it was difficult to push. The floorboards were pushed up so I couldn't get it out of gear. Part of the coupler had actually broken, so we just had to remove the safety chains to separate the trailer. Once everything was off the road, I looked where it had all just happened. I was amazed at the conditions I was looking at. The hail was still coming down and the road appeared to be almost snow covered. Of course it stopped about that time, but it continued to pour down rain for another 20 or so minutes. And there was nowhere to take cover. I wanted to take some photos of the bike and road conditions, but I didn't want to ruin my phone. So here we were, on a mountain road 150 miles from home, in pouring rain, and with one bike unridable and a busted trailer. There are some awesome people in this world still. The couple in the Tahoe were those people for us that day. Steve and Kathy live in the mountain town of Bear City, and they were just out for a Sunday afternoon drive in the rain. They too were both soaked after helping me get the bike and trailer off the road. Steve told me he had a trailer and would be willing to go get it and trailer us into town, or even back down the mountain to the freeway. I humbly and thankfully accepted his offer. I had already contacted my brother that was going to head up to get us, but that was going to take a while. Steve and Kathy returned with their trailer in about 30 minutes, and we were able to load the RSV and the trailer onto it. By now they offered for us to come to their home to wait for my brother. Did I say these people are awesome? Once at their home, I made some phone calls. I cancelled my camping reservations, and notified family and friends about what had happened, but assuring everyone we were okay. I had to talk one of my daughters into staying put till we got home, she wanted to come up to make sure I was okay. We changed into dry clothes and Kathy even threw our wet ones in the dryer. And I inspected the bike more thoroughly. I must admit, I was now starting to feel some bruising, and the emotions were coming on. It was a bit of a scary ordeal. I have rambled on enough for now. I'm not sure, but I think the bike is totaled. I'll add to this later and include some details on the damage and some photos. I'm pretty bummed at the ruined camping trip and the potential loss of my bike, but I obviously have a lot to be thankful for. I am so thankful that it was me and not my son that went down. It was so hot when we left home, and I normally would have been without the jacket and wearing just a t-shirt. For some reason I wore my TourMaster mesh jacket, and it did do its job. I also tend to wear either my 3/4 or even half helmet in that kind of heat, but I had my full face modular helmet on. Not a scratch on the helmet, but you never know. Although the hail probably was the biggest cause of me going down, it also provided a slick "sheet" for me to slide along on. The Tahoe was able to stop on time. Kathy said from looking at me coming at them, she really thought I would be seriously hurt or even killed. Steve said he didn't know what to think as he saw me and the bike and trailer coming at him. Said it looked bad. I thank God I was not seriously hurt. And of course the kindness and hospitality that was given to us by Steve and Kathy. And thank you to all on here for letting me tell my story, and for all the kind words I know I will get.
