  1. The temp has been 102 the last couple days. I've got a 45 min commute to work (mostly interstate). The last 2 days, when I pull up in the parking lot, I can smell antifreeze. These are the times when I wish I could see the engine temp like I could on my last 5 motorcycles. The bike is not leaking any coolant that I can see. It's not smoking. I don't feel any change in performance. Is there any way I can find out if the motor is running too hot? What would y'all do if you smelled antifreeze after a long, hot ride??
  2. Help!!! I am supposed to be taking a long trip starting tomorrow and my 07 is leaking Antifreeze. There are a couple small drips coming from the rear finned cylinder cover on the left side. I removed the cover and found where it appears to be coming from. But I have no clue what it is. It appears to be a 4th screw hole towards the bottom of the cylinder. I guess it could've blown from somewhere else, but it sure doesn't look like it. - There are no other Antifreeze trails except below it. Have any of you seen this before or have any ideas what is going on? Craigr
  3. I have changed my anti freeze and have let the bike run now for 20 minutes, long enough that it got hot enough for the cooling fan to kick on. I notice that the overflow is about 1 inch above normal full level. So I suppose this is normal. If there was any air locks or reason for the bike to get hot (boil over), should it have done so in that length of time ??? Never changed antifreeze in a bike before.............. No leaks anywhere and I did the whole drain except the pump. Thank you all for your advice. :confused24::confused24:
  4. Be precise please. I have never bought antifreeze for a motorcycle. The book says to get Ethylene Glycol type. I have not got a clue what that is. Is it possibly just plain old car antifreeze or what ? What brand should I get for a bike. I am sure it would have to be for an aluminum engine. I would like to completely change even. I do now know the procedure, thanks to Goose and the tech library. The bike is a 2007 model and has same antifreeze. Thank you in advance. Fuzzy
  5. Not in english...but you'll figure it out. http://biggeekdad.com/2010/04/oil-or-antifreeze/
  6. What I would like to know (before I change it) is Ethanediol antifreeze the same as Ethylene Glycol and would it therefore be suitable to use on my second gen 1999 Venture?
  7. Can anyone steer me in the right direction,I need a new service manual for my 1985 Venture. It as cone missing over the winter ,and there are no signs of it. All so Iam thinking of changeing out my antifreeze with something better.Like Royal Purple,or some other product that will help keep things a little cooler. Ant suggestions would be appreciated. And last what is the total amount of antifreeze in the bike system... Thank you Stan
  8. I searched but there appears to be no answer out there in VentureRiders.org land (yet). Which antifreeze should we be using? Someone told me to use a non-silicate blend and to use Honda (automobile type 2) or the Toyota long-life stuff which will prolong long the life of the water pump. I also see Yamaha has some special stuff at their usual outrgaeous prices. I have been using plain old Prestone green stuff (mix your own 50/50). What's the consensus out about antifreeze out there?
  9. what type and what kind of antifreeze should i use for my 83, thank you.
  10. I have had an antifreeze leak on my 1999 RSV for some time now. I have narrowed it down to a certain area that it is coming from. I need help on what to do. It is coming from the bottom of the side cover of the head. I am wondering if I take the side cover off is there a gasket or not? If it is not possible to be the side cover then do you think it would be the head gasket or the water jacket joint? I am going to attach some pictures? Any advice is greatly appreciated. I don't know a whole lot about motorcycles. Thanks hairman
  11. Just Bored and think to replace Antifreeze in Venture Cooling System, and get ready for nice weather rides. I Got one of Amsoil Antifreeze https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/ant.aspx , and they recommend to mix with Water in rate of 40, 50 or 60 % depend on region. Well Chicago have some arctic temperatures during winter, but over summer could be extremely hot too. So What is your experience with Coolant / Proportions. Should I Wait until Spring and use higher water grade. or just mix as directed on bottle? Little confused. this is my first time to change coolant fluid on Venture. I Know I'm never change coolant in my cars, and they works. What is your Recommendation. Thanks
  12. It is supposed to be down to around zero F here in the next couple of days so yesterday evening I thought I had better check the antifreeze in all my vehicles. The first thing I had to do was run over to Walmart to buy another checker as I could not find the one I had. I figured as I was there I would buy a gallon of antifreeze. I still can not let myself buy the 50/50 mix and pay almost the same price as regular. And, I always keep a gallon or so of distilled water on hand. Everything checked good, but one of my Maximas was almost 2 quarts low. I must have a leak somewhere, but I have not noticed it marking it's territory. So, when the weekend gets here and the really cold temperatures, I will just snuggle down and stay in. RandyA
  13. I just got back from 1700 mile trip to Duluth with a side trip to Chippewa Falls to see my daughter. Everything went pretty good except the first night when I pulled into the campground in Iowa I smelled antifreeze. Got off the bike and looked and one tube had a dent and there was a double spray of antifreeze. Thought my whole trip was ruined. I bought some stopleak and a package of JB Weld waterweld.Put the stopleak in and mixed up a ball of the epoxy and smashed it in around the damaged tube. Very nervously the next morning we headed on north. Never saw a drop of fluid leak or I probably would have turned around and headed back home. I hauled 2 gallons of antifreeze around the rest of the trip just in case. Tonight looking online for a new radiator the cheapest price I found was from a boat dealer. I was searching with the Yamaha # that I found at a motorcycle website. 4XY-12461-00-00 That surely is the same # all the way through the Yamaha system and they don't have a boat radiator with the same #. Maybe it fits a jetski. Can anybody confirm this?
  14. Please can any one tell me why there would be gas runing from the bottom of the motor & front fairing. I had the tank off to change the antifreeze. could the vent line at the top of the tank be causing this to happen? is it also used as a return line?
  15. This is Cindy.... . just put the leveling links on Dales bike and after he took it off the lift I noticed fluid....antifreeze I believe...... here are 2 picks showing where the leak is ..........any ideas???????? Thanks !!!! http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i251/rella_photo/test/100_1464.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i251/rella_photo/test/100_1465.jpg
  16. I need to ask this only because I'm on the road and don't have my owner's manual or shop manual with me. When checking the antifreeze level in the tank behind the right side cover, is the bike supposed to be level and balanced or leaning over on the side stand? It makes a huge difference in what the level reads. The bike in question is a '96 Royal Star, if that makes any difference. TIA.
