If riding in a group I use channel 29, but if alone I am on 19.

Like BuddyRich says, do a system restore if you had XP set up to do autosave points.

Any decent seat pads out there that work ???
SaltyDawg replied to Sterling Turner's topic in Watering Hole
I had a gel pad inserted into my seat on my 99 and it made a difference but I ended up having to buy a sheepskin from Alaska Leathers because the BB insert would absorb so much heat from the sun that it would burn my back side for close to an hour. Since you have pillow top seats and use a sheepskin I would suggest alternating between the two on long rides. I did it on my FL trip and never had a problem. Every time I stopped for gas I either put the ss on or took it off. Gives a different feel. I have the pillow tops on this 99 and only use the SS on long rides for a change up. I have done 600 miles with the PT in a day without using the ss and had no problems. If a pillow top w/ss worked for 3 days I highly doubt you would like a Corbin saddle. Hard as a rock from my experience. -

My experience with a blown shock is that me being a large man close to 300lbs the shock would bottom out quite often and would pogo down the road after going over RR tracks and hitting a pot hole. The worst was trying to track a straight path through a corner. Pretty much impossible, the bike wants to wander and wobble through the corner. Unsettling to say the least. Deciding factor for replacing the shock was when I was in traffic going about 50Mph in the left lane and had to make a swift lane change to avoid a hard braking cage. Whipped the bike to the right hard and back left hard to straighten her up and at the same time hit a pot hole and bottomed out almost high siding the bike at 50Mph. Got to work and promptly pulled 10 inches of leather out of my rear. Got on the net and ordered a new shock.

I'm pretty sure it's higher than that. I have gone to 7,500 before the rev limiters kick in. They do if I am not mistaken have a speed limiter in them also keeping them below 120-125Mph.

Carb Heater Cut-out Switch
SaltyDawg replied to V7Goose's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Or you could pull the fuse to the carb heaters and be done with it. Mine has been pulled for over a year with no adverse effects. I rode year round this season with temps down to 14 degrees. -
It's the shock. Blow back would be dark in a 99 even if you just changed the oil. I highly suggest the Works Performance shock. Go to www.buckeyeperformance.com and email RickH he can get you all the information. If you decide to go with the Works Shock I suggest you go through Rick since he is a dealer he has a better chance of getting it to you quicker than if you went through Works Performance. The Works Performance shock is custom made for you and your bike. They take into consideration your weight, passengers weight, towing a trailer, and your riding style to design a shock to work for you. That's why it costs so much. They don't just have Venture shocks on the shelf. It is a lot beefier than the stock and can be rebuilt for less than $150.00 although I haven't heard of one failing yet. Some folks have been able to get Yamaha to give them a new shock even out of warranty since it is a known problem with the RSV. Only problem is, the new and improved shock isn't exactly that. It's the same sock they only added a vent hose. From what I have been reading the failure rate is about the same as the old one. It's woefully inadequate for this big of a bike. Oh yeah if Yamaha gives you a new shock you have to pay for installation or do it yourself. It isn't a hard job if you have a lift.

Maybe I did read you wrong I don't know. You did have a round about way of getting the tire broke in, but there are others that are telling OB-1 that he didn't give the tire enough time to break in, that 350 miles wasn't enough and that theirs didn't feel good until about 1,000 miles. Unacceptable in my book, but then again that's just me. I have to applaud the MC shop that refused to put the CT on for OB, they obviously saw the writing on the wall.

Read the whole post. He started at 35psi and said he felt like he was going to die in a fiery death, 45 was better but still with the wobble and then dropping to 34.5 was like night and day. Now I'm no rocket scientist, but I can figure that if 35 was really bad and 45 was better than the 35. It's pretty easy to see that dropping from 35 where he started and ending up on 34.5 is only a half of a pound no matter how many stops along the way. The difference between a fiery death and night and day. To me a half a pound is unacceptable air expands as it gets hot so suffice it to say that what you start out the day with on pressure isn't what it's going to be going 65MPH down the interstate on a hot day. If the tire is that sensitive to pressure changes then how would you go about making sure it's perfect every time? NASCAR crew chiefs make 1/4psi changes to change spring rate of the tire, but they use Nitrogen because it expands less than air. I check my tire pressures every week and sometimes it has dropped as much as 3 psi. As far as mileage on the RT, well maybe you just haven't found the right tire yet. I don't ride like a little old lady but I don't scrape the floorboards on every turn either. I run hard for the most part. I was never able to get more than 8-10,000 miles out of a rear tire until switching to the Commanders. I don't, however ride 2 up anywhere near as much as I used to. My wife has her own scoot now.

1,000 miles, 1,400 miles to break in a tire!!! That's insane, sorry but I'm not willing to put my life on line for 1,000 miles to get more tread wear out of a tire. Performance is obviously not a factor in mounting a CT. A half a pound of air being the difference between feeling like dieing in a fiery crash and night and day? I mount a new rear tire about every 10 months putting 18-20,000 miles on it. I don't make a lot of money, but I can afford $130.00 every 10 months to have the peace of mind to know I have the ability to get out of a hairy situation when that cage comes into my lane. Whether I'm breaking the tire in or have 15,000 miles on it. As I have stated in another post. I can see mounting a CT if you run mostly straight flat roads, pull a trailer A LOT, or had the bike triked/side car. I see advantages in that. I ride to work each and every day, rain, cold, dead of summer, 100 miles round trip. So believe me when I say I would like a tire that lasts longer, but not at the cost of handling. To each his own.

As far as running a biased ply and radial on the same bike, well I have talked several bike mechanics and they see no problem with it. They said it was just a wives tale. On leaving the Dark Side, well all I can say is: Welcome Back!!!

To clutch, or not to clutch. THAT is the question.
SaltyDawg replied to Schlepporello's topic in Safety and Education
A lot of Venture riders only use the clutch for starting out then shift clutchless. I do it on occasion but would have to say about 80% of the time I use the clutch. I don't think it hurts theses things to shift without the clutch. -
WANT TO TALK TO ANOTHER BIKE w/o AUDIO
SaltyDawg replied to TESchoener's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
I would go with the J&M also, you have the option to put an MP3 player into it as well as bluetooth if you buy an adapter if I'm not mistaken. -
Anyone have dealt with these guys?
SaltyDawg replied to Maritimer's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
Can't say as I have had any of those problems with my Zumo 550. Sure every once and a while it takes a different route than what you would think it should, but most if not all GPS's do this also. No major audio problems as of yet, I occasionally have to reseat it in the cradle because of it getting jarred on a hard bump in the road, and as for not having a speaker on the MC mount, well you wouldn't exactly be able to hear what is being said while riding at highway speeds with a helmet on and wind noise. It is designed to integrate with an audio system on the MC, for that it works just fine.- 14 replies

Disconnect the connector from the horn then check your voltage. If the engine isn't running it will be in the 11vdc range since the headlight is on and drawing current. I agree with Freebird check that little screw.

Looking for 'comfy seating' on 06 Midnight
SaltyDawg replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Rick posted in last week or two that he was going on vacation and would be out of contact for a few weeks. He still does the mod, you will just have to wait till his return. If you search his posts you will find that one and I believe it has his expected return date. If I can get another seat I plan on having Rick do the mod for me. Maybe I can find a seat of early seats cheap to get it done to. -
That rear shock looks like it's sitting on the bump stops. LOL

So So glad you guys are alright. Bikes can be fixed. Someone was looking out for you two that's for sure.

Not gonna happen with this audio system.

Intercom and Radio in helmet
SaltyDawg replied to Maritimer's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Those buttons/switch are the Transmit buttons for the CB. If you turn the CB off they won't cut out the radio. Does your radio cut out every now and then and you hear static or someone talking? That's the CB receiving. -
What a tragedy. My thoughts and prayers go out to all. What a shame.

Headlight Bulb Orientation
SaltyDawg replied to AKRefugee's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'm pretty sure that the H4 bulbs are keyed in such a way that they can only go in one way and if you were able to get the retaining clip back on then the bulb is in properly. It's my guess that the HL is still aimed too high and needs to come down. I personally run my brights 95% of the time and have it aimed so that at about 50 yards the top of the beam of light is about 20ft off the ground. If the light bothers people at night then I will drop to low until they are passed. I have learned from experience that it's better to see farther and wider at night. Deer are constantly on the sides of the roads and the sooner I see them the better. -
Intercom and Radio in helmet
SaltyDawg replied to Maritimer's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The intercom is hot all the time. The CB will cut the radio out, but not the IC as far as I'm aware. That is unless you purchase an after market mic mute and install it. Then you have to activate the IC when you plan on using it either through a switch or hitting the CB transmit switch. Many people have the mic mutes and keep their IC volume near max so they can be heard when talking. If you keep the IC volume near max or maxed without mic mutes you pick up too much engine/road noise and it gets annoying after a while.
