    Here in east Tennessee, we have a lot of rolling hills, some up to 6,600 feet and it can make for some unpredictable wind. As you move along in what would be a constant wind, the direction and intensitivity can change as the contour of the land changes. Several times on what was a nice day, I have cut a ride short due to wind. Wife's cousin dumped his Voyager after coming around a "protected" curve into the wind and he was off the road. RandyA

    This reminds me of being with my brother-in-law once. We were in his Ford F250 that he uses to go from point A to point B. I had him stop at a cycle shop for me to pick up something and while I ran in, there were a couple of guys on Goldwings with trailers leaving. As I was getting back in the truck, I asked where they were headed and they responded the Florida Keys on vacation. My BIL stated he could not figure why anyone would ride a motorcycle to the vacation spot. He said he guessed he could see trailering one and riding when he got there . I told him the difference was if you were riding a bike, the vacation started when you left and if you towed it, the vaction started when you got there. I really don't think he understood what I meant. RandyA

    Hey pegscraper, as I have mentioned before, I used to work in Ft Wayne up to the mid 90's. In my times there and riding around in the company car, I never did see much of a hill unless it was an overpass. Then again, I am from the mountains of east Tennessee and we have hills close by that go up to over 6,600 feet. If you ever get a chance to come to this area, please let me know and I will take you on some roads that will scrape your pegs plum off. Thanks for posting and I enjoyed the pictures. RandyA

    I probably have one of the more "unique" early 1st gens with a lot of mods. Functional: Corbin seat lowered 1-1/2 inches, upgraded head light to 86 up style, running lights, arm rests for wife I made with her own cup holder. Blaupunkt CD-MP3 player with 4 speakers installed. Safety: Air horns, Strobes in head light, strobes in trunk light bar with LED lights on trunk when brakes activated. Looks: painted Twight Royal Pearl, a soft pearl purple with ghost flames. Made "bikini" side panels to open engine up with lowers removed. Polished front forks, handle bars and engine covers. There are probably more than I can think of, but all these things are my favorite and I use them all!!! RandyA

    I occasionally surf thru ebay and have found some good stuff and some junk. I am also amazed at what some of these folks think their stuff is worth. It is not uncommon to see something listed for a buy-it-now price of $150 and on the next page, the same thing listed for $20 and still no or very few bids. My question, as it pertains to this forum is; if I see something I think others may need or want, should I flag it to the masses on here? Because, when I am watching something that I want, I don't want someone blabbing to the world about it. When I am bidding, I kind of feel it is everyone else's tough luck if they do not spend the effort to look on ebay. But, when I come across something I think you guys may want, I want to flag it to the group. I would really like to know how others feel about this. RandyA

    I doubt that, as it looks like you would have some serious gear mesh if it was crushed. I suspect any differences would be on the outside of the unit. Just out of curosity, did the same axle get used on both rear ends? If not, are they the same lengths? Also, has the width on the rear end been measured? Are the fork leg thicknesses the same on the bikes the parts came from? Enquireing minds want to know. RandyA

    Well, if you had gone to a 1st gen, it would have been more like going from a gocart to a sports bike, not a monster truck. Wow, having failures on those 2nd gens before you even get it home!! (Nice bike) RandyA

    I just checked on them and they are $98 plus $15.50 shipping. They say the discount will be returned when shipped. As far as I went, I did not see a place to leave a note about being from VentureRider. Was that on the last page? The last I heard they were $68 plus $5 for shipping, is this still correct? RandyA

    I use a strip of contact cement and push the grip on and have never had a problem. It may be a little difficult to remove the grip, but when putting a new one on, I cut the old one off anyway. RandyA

    I guess I am pretty lucky. I have a local independent shop that works on anything. They do good work, but sometimes it may take a while. It is routine to have as many as 50 to 70 bikes in line to be repaired. A year or so ago I stopped by and he had 5 1st gen Ventures in line. He also has a salvage yard in the back and did have a 1st gen until I ended up with it. If you buy the tires from him, mounting is included if you have the wheel off. There is a charge of about $8.00 for balancing. I put on both of the Elite 3's myself and did the axle and jackstands trick for balancing the front. It feels perfect at speed. I bought the rear from him and the front from superstore for $102. I am a happy camper even though the front tire was the hardest I have ever put on a rim. The Avon I took off was not hard, but the Elite 3 going on was. He was also the guy that told me about undercutting the gears for the 2nd gear problem. He was doing that on some racing motorcross bikes. It is also pretty common to see Harleys in line. RandyA

    Skid, I have heard of the tank cover coming loose before. I remember someone telling the story of picking up a bike they had just bought and when hitting the highway the front came loose and popped up in his face. Glad you were able to keep everything under control and did not loose the piece to the road. RandyA

    Lew, I want to again express to you and your wife that you have always done a fantastic job on putting Vogal together. You have gone to great lengths to put together a very organized program. Now, I would like to make a suggestion for you to consider. Last year when we put Asheville together, it was more like an extended meet and eat. There were several rides that were put together and the most formal one was going to Biltmore Estate. Other than that, it was not extensively planned. It was more like "Hey, who wants to go to Chimney Rock" or someplace else. We did have the meet that Rooster put together to eat, but other than that, the get togethers were mostly just winging it. We did have some hot dog meals and pancake breakfasts, but there was not a lot planning. My suggestion is maybe having a less formal get together. All the gifts and everything you did was great, but it can be great without it too. At the moment Laura and I are not sure if we are going to make it to Vogal, and I have been to all three and had a great time. We will just have to see as it gets closer. One thing I would suggest you or someone else do is have everyone coming provide information for emergencies or what ever and fax it to a central person and they can make copies for everyone attending. We did not have any crashes at Asheville last year, but there were several times the sheet got pulled out and people were contacted, such as needing help with a bike breakdown or whatever. I will be having cataract surgery a week or so before Asheville and may need to cage it to there. RandyA
