  1. I got one that is purple, that matches my bike!!! RandyA
  2. Spring gets here at 7:44 am EDT. I went out to the car to leave for work and windshield was covered with ice, not frost, but a think layer of ice. This has been the longest winter I can remember in my life. We may still have some winter weather in the mix, but it won't last long. I just pray we have a good safe riding year. RandyA
  3. I want to remind everyone of the dangers of using bungee cords. My supervisor at work had a bungee cord come loose as he was trying to secure something and it popped him in the center of his left eye. At this point he will have to have a new lense put in to get any use out of that eye. I have also almost have this happen and it could have gotten me, but I was lucky. Year before last, Laura were coming to the campground at Vogal and she wanted some firewood to have a campfire(it did not matter that it was 80º outsire). We stopped at a little store and I bought a bundle of firewood and realized I had not pasked my good bungee cords. I went back into the store and bought some of theirs and as I was stapping the bundle of firewood on the trunk grill, one uncurled on the hook and came loose, just barely missing my face. So, I know how quickly this can happen. If you are going to use bungee cords, and they can be real handy, just make sure that if it did come loose when you are pulling on it that you are not in the line of fire. These things can pack a lot of punch. RandyA
  4. There are some of us 1st genners that don't have CLASS, because we are standard, but if we had CLASS, we still wouldn't have any class. RandyA
  5. I think the politically correct term for this is " electrically challenged". I think they are doing away with the word retarded. RandyA
  6. Could it be the Reserve Light Unit? I forget what it is, but there is some kind of warning to let you know your RSU is not working. It may be that the high beam indicator quits working. Hey Steve, I opened up the clutch slave I got from you and it also had the square rubber insert that covers the hole where the bleeder it. KEWL!!! RandyA
  7. I got mine from the superstore.com for $102 with free shipping, but I checked yesterday and they were up to $116. I do like the tire. Hey thom, how are you going to know if the tire feels good down in Texas, you ain't got no curves like we got up here? Oh, I remember, you don't like curves. RandyA
  8. One thing that has been sugested to bicyclists is to lay your bike down on the road near the strips to trip the light. I guess we could do that with our Ventures. Then when enough people stop to help you get the bike picked back up, maybe it will trip the light. RandyA
  9. Are you refering to the collector under the engine, or one of the side mufflers under the side bags? RandyA
  10. Sounds like a ground problem to me. See which wire is ground and make sure it is good. RandyA
  11. Thanks for sharing that Nick. But..but..my 26 year old Venture is not THAT outdated, is it? RandyA
  12. I have not taken the time to go find my manual and read it, but just from what I am reading here, I am seeing things that do not make sense. First of all, if you are reading valve clearance at Top Dead Center TDC between the compression stroke and power stroke, you are going to be on the back side of the cam on those lifters. The reduction of the valve clearance is not caused by the shim getting thicker due to sludge or anything, but from the valve face hammering into the valve seat and wear in that area. The more it wears at the valve seat, the less clearance you have at the shim. Now what is the reason for clearance in the first place? There needs to be enough clearance to allow the valve to close completely when "off" the lobe and there should not be excessive clearance to allow the shim to rattle. If too much clearance, you will hear the valve "ticking". The specified clearance takes these two things into consideration along with the various heat ranges that everything will be operating in. Therefore, if you set your valve clearance to be checked in any of the area where that valve is completely off the lobe, you should be just fine. And, when you check the clearances with the engine cold, that specification takes into consideration any heat changes. I have checked a few valve clearance in my day, from several different bikes to soild lifter high performance cams in small block Chevys and the off lobe clearance is what is always used. The only time any loading was used was when duration and cam timing was taken into consideration and that is usually at the .050 lift point at the beginning and ending of the lift area. So I say checking the clearance anywhere on the off lobe will be fine. RandyA
  13. Great article and two more suggestions. This is a great time to remove and grease the speedometer. When ever you put the dash back in and plug up the big receptical to the back of the CMS, use a plastic wire tie to pull the wiring harness up slightly to take the "pull" off the connection. RandyA
  14. If you have an auto supply place that sells stuff for farm tractors, you can get a wire set cheap that works real good. Just make sure you replace the caps as they have a resistor in them that gets corroded. Also, make sure you have your petcock back open as you will be running out of gas. RandyA
  15. When I went from the Avon to the Elite III the other day on the front, the Elite III was about an inch taller. It is the 90 series. RandyA
  16. I think it was well worth watching and agreed with it all. RandyA
  17. It is not just that one week. When bringing your bike to MB seems to be discouraged at anytime, motorcyclists go elsewhere. They may not even want to go there in the cage with the family. That is when they would normally do a little shoping while the family is in the water. The biggest problem is not the half drunk Harley guys with loud pipes, it is the "second" bike week that causes the majority of the problems. Do a little research and you will understand. We went down to Hilton Head SC last year and that is another place that is not M/C friendly. Many of the places you could not go into on a bike. That was my last trip there. RandyA
  18. http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com Try this out. I just got an Elite III for my 1st gen less than anywhere else that I could find. RandyA
  19. What is the serial number on the 85? If it is above 1413, it should have the upgraded stuff in it. RandyA
  20. I bought my 83 Venture 13 years ago this month with 23,000 miles on the odometer. I have put an additional 98,000 miles on in since for a total of 121,000 miles. It has been a great bike for me and I enjoy it immensly. How about you on your bike? RandyA
  21. You may have a problem with the proportioning valve not working correctly. RandyA
  22. Got a stiff neck yet? RandyA
  23. Hey Dan, I know there is a difference from 86 up on the Venture, compared to an 85 , but not sure if 85 Vmax is different in mounting from an 85 Venture. I have considered picking up an 86 up swingarm sometime off ebay, as there is normally not a high demand to later on pick up a Vmax rearend. RandyA
  24. Wjat ever it was. it is removed. RandyA
  25. Even our leader dropped his bike at Vogal. I believe it was Vogal I and as we were riding back from Helen, we pulled over at an overlook and some riders that were in front of us did a u-turn. When one of them came back to the overlook and was making a loop, he was going too slow and the bike started to come over. Freebird jumps off his bike and tries to help the other guy and had not put his bike in gear. Yep, the down hill slope got him. RandyA
