  1. How do I know what is covered under the 5 year warranty and what isn't? My 05 RSTD is still under warranty (finally got my dealer to figure out it does indeed have a 5 year manufacturers warranty) and I THINK I have a front fork seal leaking. The manager claims that he called Yamaha and they told him that a fork seal is not covered under the warranty. Would like to call bull, but need some ammo. Also, would a leaking fork seal hold air?
  2. Go buy you a 30a 12v relay and a fuse box. remove all of the leads from your batter, hook up the relay and the fuse box. much cleaner and neater.
  3. So I think the front fork seals are weeping on my bike. When I had it up on a lift there is an accumulated dirt/goo under the right fork. Went by my dealer, they verified that it is still under warrant (that took some doing), and supposedly called Yamaha and was told that fork seals are NOT covered under the 5 year warranty. Anybody know any different?
  4. Just a thanks to V7Goose for my own personal maintenance day. Went to house at about 9 am on Saturday and commenced to tearing down my 05 RSTD. Got the carbs off, and had to adjust all 4 of the floats. Put in new plugs, changed out all of the coolant, synced the carbs and adjusted the mixture screws. A long hot afternoon, but a success. Thanks again.
  5. the stock seat sucks. try a different one. beads help as well as a quick change of pace at every other fuel stop.
  6. Sounds like the perfect reason to go to the Dark Side. Its what I did when my Metz gave it up.
  7. as a point of reference, when my 05 RSTD was new I had it dynoed and it came out 75hp/75ft-lbs, and it runs GREAT, don't think it is running lean, and certainly not cutting out or stalling at any rpm's. Don't know what your problems may be with the bike, but the power numbers seem right on.
  8. Hmmm a 12 pack of beer, a jug of coolant, a couple of gallons of distilled water...that's going to be an interesting trip on the RSTD...
  9. We could try mine on Saturday, since I will be over anyways and have been meaning to change mine (its still original).
  10. I don't know about that. I just ordered a Pirelli MT66 for my front tire.
  11. Yes you need safety chains, no worries in the rain, don't NEED a swivel hitch, start with 25 lbs in the tires.
  12. I just put a 155/80/r15 BFG Radial T/A on my 05 RSTD
  13. I bought a used Harbor Freight trailer and car top carrier from a guy who never finished the project. I finished it, painted the frame with truck bed liner, painted the top of the carrier with a spray can and was very happy with it. It pulled no problem and held a bunch of stuff. My total investment was maybe $300. If you aren't worried about looks, this is the cheapest way to go and works great.
  14. I'm going to be heading down towards the Austin area for that weekend for the ROT rally.
  15. I'll have to respectfully disagree about the foam earplugs. I always use these on long trips and can definately hear better at all frequency's with these on (at least while moving, it is harder to hear conversations with them in when stopped).
  16. Check all of the fuses.
  17. I bought a BFG Radial T/A from discount tire and they mounted the tire on my wheel for me. I think that they ended up using about 80 lbs to seat it, but they could at least put the wheel in a cage for safety.
  18. Also make sure your not lugging this motor, it likes to rev. Excessive lugging will also cause vibration.
  19. When I bought my 81 GS1100, it didn't have a title and I went through International Title Service and didn't have any problems with getting a new title.
  20. Hope yours goes better than mine. My first trip out with our new Time Out camper, we were about 2 hours from home on the highway when the rear blew out (picked up a nail). Ended ok, but was pretty hairy for awhile. The tire bead broke, so I couldn't even move the bike.
  21. You can also run all of your accessories off of a 30 amp relay (which is what I do) and tie the turn on to something (like the headlights) that are only on when the key is in and turned on.
  22. I've got the Corbin Dual Touring on my 05 RSTD and on my last long summer trip I would at fuel stops I would either put on or take off my bead seat. After 1 1/2-2 hours on either my butt was ready for a change. The beads can be changed very quickly.
  23. If it is a hydralic clutch your out of luck. If it is cable actuated, then you should be able to adjust it.
  24. If I understand what you are asking, it can't make any difference. If you have an aux block in the electrical system, and it has power on it, you are going to drain the battery, where else can the juice come from? The only other thing you could do was put in a relay where the trigger is from a source that only comes on when the bike is either running or the key is in the run position.
  25. If you haven't seen this documentary, it is definitely worth a watch. Ewan McGregor and friend travel 18000 miles around the world. Crazy stuff in there.
