  1. WOW...talk about mixed feelings. I started riding when I was about 14 and I sure earned my share of battle marks during those early years. No training at all, just jumped on a bike, figured out what to push to make it go and was a terror for many years after that. Dylan is 19 now. I've bought a few small bikes for him to put around the yard on when he was younger but he never had any real interest. He had a CT70, a CT90, a Honda Bearcat and etc. but just never rode them over a half dozen times or so. Last week he told me that he has decided that he wants a bike. I think that some of his co-workers ride and he wants to join them. I feel very hypocritical about it all. I absolutely do NOT want him to get a bike but I sure understand the attraction. It has brought me much joy over the years. So, what do you do? I told him the truth about how I feel about it. That I really don't want him buying a bike but that I knew I had no basis to tell him no. I told him that I would insist though that he take the MSF safety course and that he NOT start out on a crotch rocket. I am steering him towards a 650 or so cruiser like maybe a VStar or a Honda Shadow. Due to his lack of interest in the past, I never thought I would have to face this day but here it is.
  2. Can anyone tell me what they cost? Was told the second gens are a lot better...
  3. So today some bimbo in a car drove in the exit only ramp at the bank while she was obliviously yappin' on her cell. Almost hit me on the motorcycle head on. I called her a moron & told her to get off her cell! She rolled down her window & gave me an attitude filled a non convincing "sor~ry". I replied "it's a damn exit not an entrance!", & started to go around her... well her reply?, "Well duh!" I stopped still, directly in front of her dropped my kickstand & told her to BACK OUT cuz I'm not moving! Would you believe she said "I'm calling the police." I said "back out or call the cops your choice" So...cops get there, our vehicles are face to face & she's facing the wrong way. Cop started writing her tickets(s) plural I counted at least 3. My guess is crossing a double yellow line, driving the wrong way, & dangerous action. Cop told me to go & be safe, I thanked him. I look at the bimbo on my way out, smiled & said... "Y'all have a nice day!"
  4. I am thinking of buying a scooter, about 150cc just enough for riding two up with maby a top speed of 50 MPH. don't want to spend a lot of money and some of the chineese ones look good but I am told to stay away from them. Would appreicate any infor on good ones to buy. No , I'm not getting rid of the RSV, the scooter will live on the boat for shore trips.
  5. I just bought a HF tag a long trailer and would like to know what things I should do to it to make it better befor I assemble it. I know alot of people use them so what should I do. I was told there at HF that they are not going to carry them any more.
  6. Sick Leave I urgently needed a few days off work, but, I knew the Boss would not allow me to take a leave. I thought that maybe if I acted 'Crazy' then he would tell me to take a few days off. So I hung upside-down on the ceiling and made funny noises. My co-worker (who's blonde) asked me what I was doing. I told her that I was pretending to be a light bulb so that the Boss would think I was 'Crazy' and give me a few days off. A few minutes later the Boss came into the office and asked, 'What in the name of GOD are you doing?' I told him I was a light bulb. He said, 'You are clearly stressed out.' Go home and recuperate for a couple of days.' I jumped down and walked out of the office... When my co-worker (the blonde) followed me, the Boss asked her, '..And where do you think you're going?!' (You're gonna lovethis....) She said, 'I'm going home, too. I can't work in the dark.
  7. WE'RE NOT QUITE READY FOR THIS YET................!!! I stopped at your house the other day and was told you were down at your favorite biker bar with some friends. I wasn't sure where that was, but was told I wouldn't have much trouble finding it. Sure enough, I drove just a couple blocks and there it was... http://us.mg5.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download?mid=2%5f0%5f0%5f1%5f3509026%5fAA1bimIAACWTT5CrBA3kAVxLh5Q&pid=2.2&fid=Inbox&inline=1&appid=YahooMailNeo There is nothing like the feeling of the sun on your face and the wind in your hair (?), is there?
  8. I couldn't get my rear brake caliper to compress but a quick search told me what I was doing wrong. Thanks guys.
  9. A friend is looking at a NUVI gps and has been told that it wont broadcast fm to his bike fm radio. One salesguy has told him that only the weather reports will broadcast thru to his fm radio. he is looking to run some music from an sd card and get his gps voice directions through his speakers. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Or suggest a gps that will do this for him? Brian
  10. My daughter and her husband showed up last night out of the blue. She was quiet for a few minutes then she announced that we may be grandparents. Initial home testing shows shes pregnant. In a few weeks she will go for a full Dr eval and testing, but shes pretty convinced its gonna happen. Told her I may have to get a sidecar for the kid now.......I can se it now....Baby leathers for the first bday and leather streamers on the stroller.
  11. Hi Folks: Before I get started, this is a post about the whining noise but not a request for information on how to fix it , as I have read about the clutch basket, the "I" basket and square cut gears. I'm new to this site and also new to the Venture motorcycle (owned one for two days). I love the bike in every way except for the unacceptably loud whining noise. I bought m bike used from a Yamaha dealer and I'm confused by the fact that they sold it to me without mentioning this problem and they won't take it back. I just bought a 2007 Royal Star Venture (two days ago !) from a Yamaha Dealer in Connecticut (I live in NY state). I found the bike on the internet and went over there to buy it. I was told by the salesman(who was bearing the same last name as that of the dealership) that it was "the oldest Yamaha dealer in the United States, still family owned for four generations". I wanted one of these bikes for touring, having ridden one only once, a year ago. I read many reviews on the bike and many comments from owners but never ran across anyone mentioning that one of the characteristics of the bike is an annoying whining sound at highway speeds, which can be termed unbearable. In fact, the one I rode a year ago didn't do this as I would have surely noticed. I didn't notice this noise when when I test rode the bike I just bought because its most noticeable at highway speed and the salesman coerced me into NOT taking the bike on I95 because "its a zoo out there at this time of day". It was only on the way home, after buying it that this unacceptable noise became apparent. The dealer represented the bike as a one owner bike which was in perfect running condition that had been ridden for 17,000 miles - the "cherry" that we are all always looking for. I got no great deal on the bike and basically paid top dollar for it because it was coming from a genuine Yamaha dealer who said he knew the owner and was purporting that the bike was a great bike. I had no problem paying that much for a bike in such great condition. Now, the dealer is telling me that this unbearable whine is a characteristic of the bike, like "they all do that". The one I rode last year didn't do this. In all of the rave reviews I read, not one of them mention that the bike has a characteristic annoying whine, so I don't think they all do it. But, probably, many of them do - but the ones that do are broken and need the "I" clutch basket. I was able to find out that SOME Ventures do this and the problem is fixable under warranty and there is loads of information about this problem going on for many years. Either the dealer knew about this or they aren't very good at being a dealer.I threw caution to the wind as I figured IF a Yamaha dealer was willing to sell me this bike (rather than dump it out the back door to a wholesaler), then it must be as good mechanically as it looks cosmetically (the bike is basically flawless in appearance and looks like new. I complained right away to the dealer and he told me that it is a characteristic of the bike. I told him that I understand that these bikes have an inherent whine but this bike is very loud and in the unacceptable range (unsolicited, my wife asked what the annoying noise was very soon into her first ride on the bike. Its bad. The dealer told me to bring it in on Monday (2 hours away) and he will have his mechanic look at it. I've got the feeling that this isn't going to lead me anywhere and I'm going to be told it is normal. The dealer says "He can't take the bike back because its been registered " I feel that this is a load of bull because he could buy it back for a dollar - he buys bikes all of the time. I feel that he either knowingly deceived me or has made a blunder that he should make good on. What are your thoughts ? Do you think, with all that is known about this problem, that a dealer could consider a bike that exhibits this noise to be sold as "perfect - just ridden for 17,000 miles " ? If the dealer doesn't make me smile on Monday, do I have a case to bring to Yamaha Corporation ? Your thoughts, advice and suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.
  12. Need to remove old gas from a 1984 Venture is there an easy way to do this or do I need to get a Sifen pump of some sort, was told that just putting hi test new gas in was not a good idea.
  13. Guy put in a AGM battery and sold the VR to a guy and told him the battery light was on because the sensor wire didn't work with a AGM battery. (which we all know is correct) Seems after a couple months the new owner took the bike to a dealer and the dealer told him the light was on because the stator is bad and it would cost $1800.00 to fix.. The new owner even has the sensor in his hand in front of the Judge. Judge Joe Brown looked at the picture of the bike and knew where the stator is located and said it can't cost that much to change. Well the new owner was trying to get the $1800.00 from the old owner to repair the bike. It ended up the new owner really wanted the money to go by a Harley that his wife wanted.. The Judge denied the new owner any money and told him he had a nice cruiser and should ride it and if he didn't like it go by a Harley. Surprised me how much Judge Joe Brown knew about the Venture.
  14. Ok guys, so when do we have our first good ride planned? I'm getting antsy sitting here all couped up. It doesn't help that my better half decided to give be a really nice birthday gift and told me she doesn't wanna be by better half anymore. I figure a good ride with some of my friends here should help me get my mind of that and back to where it belongs. Ridin' is great therapy. Bill
  15. The battery on my V Star 1300 finally died at age of 4 years and 3 months, pretty good lifespan in my thingking, went to Wallyworld as I normally do to buy a replacement battery, normally in the $50.-$60 dollar range...........wrong, they had 2 batteries, one was 59, the other was 86.00, and these are not Yusa, they were Walmart brand.............last battery I bought for the Venture was aroun 46.00. Shopped around, no luck , so I went to a scooter shop here in Newnan, he was $4.00 cheaper for the Yusa that the Yamaha dealer, when I told him the price difference, he said cant let that happen, he said he would let me have the Yusa for 79.95. So I have found a shop that will beat the big guys prices, I didnt expect him to come down by $30.00. I will have it by Thursday, and I can start riding again after not being on the bike since Thanksgiving due to my surgery.
  16. A little girl asked her Mom, "How did the human race appear?" The mom answered, "God made Adam and Eve and they had children, and so was all mankind made.." http://us.mg4.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download?mid=1%5f498826%5fAM4Nw0MAARF8TtrPlwxbQ3CN5so&pid=2&fid=Inbox&inline=1 Two days later the girl asked her dad the same question. The father answered, "Many years ago there were monkeys from which the human race evolved." http://us.mg4.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download?mid=1%5f498826%5fAM4Nw0MAARF8TtrPlwxbQ3CN5so&pid=3&fid=Inbox&inline=1 The confused girl returned to her mother and said, "Mom, how is it possible that you told me the human race was created by God, and dad said they developed from monkeys?" The mother answered, "Well, Dear, it's very simple. I told you about my side of the family and your father told you about his."
  17. REPLACEMENT WINDOWS Last year I replaced all the windows in my house with that expensive double-pane energy efficient kind, and today, I got a call from the contractor who installed them. He was complaining that the work had been completed a whole year ago and I still hadn't paid for them. Hellloooo,............just because I'm blonde doesn't mean that I am automatically stupid. So, I told him just what his fast talking sales guy had told me last year, that in ONE YEAR these windows would pay for themselves! Helllooooo? It's been a year! I told him. There was only silence at the other end of the line, so I finally just hung up. He never called back. I bet he felt like an idiot.
  18. I placed an order back on Aug 22 for the HID Motorcycle kit. They sent me an email with a tracking number that Monday. A couple of days later, used the tracking and it said received notice to ship. So I called HIDCountry, they said we thought we would be sending it out, but the item is on back order, will be sent the following week. This went on until last Tuesday, Sept 13. Was told parts are in, would be shipping to me and have it by Thursday, Sept 15. Called Friday, Sept 16, told them no email, no tracking number, and no package. Was told don't know what happened but will ship tonight, well of course not package Tuesday or today. Called yesterday and today, no answer nor no response to emails. So now I am left with credit card company fighting this, but just wanted to let all know NOT to use this company.
  19. On Monday my 19 year old daughter mentioned her jaw had felt like it was catching, kind of sticking in place a couple times during the day. I checked her over and found no swelling or anything odd. I told her to quit distending her jaw when she eats, (you have never seen her eat, I call her Gator), and we just laughed it off. On Tuesday afternoon she sent me a message from her work that her jaw had locked shut and she couldn't open it. Five minutes later she sent another message that it had unlocked and was better. I started to make plans to get her into the Doc the next day. I'm thinking signs of a Tentanus infection, lock jaw, at this point. Not cool. At ten last night she sent another message that it had locked again and she hurt real bad and she could feel her teeth grinding. I geared up and headed out to where she worked. When I got there she looked like a pissed off badger. Cute, but not funny. Told her to grab her stuff and we where headed to the emergency room. Her boss rolled in and told me she still had a couple hours left on her shift. My question to him was "do you want to go with us, or do you want to get out my way?" He backed off. I'll deal with that twit later. BUT......good news was it was not Tenanus. It was something I'd never heard of. This TMJ Syndrome. Problem where the joints on the jaw bone attaches to the skull, either caused by degeneration of the joints, not likely in a 19 year old, or from a past injury. Well we pretty much nailed down what that injury was. I've done my research and we are dealing with the care of it now. My question is has anyone dealt with this syndrome over a period of time and what might we expect? Just curious. Mike
  20. The Navy in it's infinite wisdom has ordered us home 10 days early!! I'm stoked! I've been told the Honey Do List is growing.
  21. Good friend called yesterday. He and his wife stopped for gas not far from home. When he got back on the RSV it sounded like a goose underneath everytime he bounce on the seat. I asked him if it felt like a pogo stick, but that wasn't the case. I told him that I was 99% sure his mono shock gave up the ghost. He is taking it to the dealer for warranty. Whatcha think?
  22. We're in the middle of a long weekend in my home state Down Under. Last Tuesday (it's now Saturday) I had my bike booked in to the local Yamahaha dealer for a 40,000kms service and a new rear tyre. Was supposed to pick it up the following day after it had been allowed to cool so the valves could be checked or whatever they do at the 40k service. Mid-morning Wednesday I'm told that the 'parts' they needed hadn't arrived on the courier service and it would be another day. "No problems", sez me. I'll get a lift in to town with a work colleague the next day. That night the dealer rings to tell me that his mechanic has stuffed his back "putting my carbies back in" and is off work - hopefully back on deck "later in the day". He would let me know by 6pm if it's right to go by the next morning. I did not hear back from him so I cancelled my lift with my friend. I gave him until noon Friday to ring me but I heard nothing. Meantime the daily train has passed through so I've missed that. Mid afternoon I ring to see how it's going and I'm told that the job card is being written up "as we speak and she's right to go." "That's fine," sez me. "But how do I get in to pick it up?" (Mind you I'm 25kms out of town with no other wheels as my pillion is away in the car visiting family.) Stony silence from the other end. I'm waiting for something like, "No worries. We'll slip out and pick you up", or "Give us an hour and we'll pop it on a trailer and deliver it to you." Nuh. No such offers. I abruptly told them to lock it up in the workshop and I'll pick it up on Tuesday (after the long weekend) when everybody's back at work. I also let it be known that I planned on taking off for a couple of days riding but that was now impossible. I'm sure the tone of my voice at that stage expressed my complete and utter dissatisfaction. So, tell me - how does a one day job turn in to a week? Just like it did above. Wonder what sort of 'compensation discount' I'll get. Unfortunately the closest other Yamahaha dealer is an hour and a half away.
  23. A doctor saw his 92-year-old patient out one day with a very, very attractive, very much younger woman on his arm. The old man said to his doctor, “Hey, doc, thanks for the great advice.” And the doctor said, “What advice was that?” The old man said, “You told me to get a hot mama and be cheerful.” Doctor said, “No, I said you have a heart murmur; be careful.”
  24. Well back on July 24 I laid my motorcycle down. Here is a post of the damage. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=62041 It was on a Sunday that it happens. With the dealers being closed on Mondays and me living on the south side of Indy I sent email to Dreyer Honda South. I told them I had a Yamaha RSTD and what had happen. Ask them if they could get the parts and fix it for me. I got a call that Tuesday morning from there service manager. He said they would love to do the job that they could get the parts. Well in a few days after that I had the check from the insurance company. I told the service manager that when they had all the parts in there dealer ship to give me a call and I would bring it in. Because I could still ride it and did not want it to be in the shop for a few months. He said Yamaha had all the parts in stock and it would take a few weeks to get them in. Well about two and a half weeks later they call me and said they have all the parts in but the front headlight ring. That if I could bring it in they would get the parts on it. Now they had down that it would take 6.5 hours labor. So I drop the bike off and I ask the service manager when it would be done he said this time next week. I told him I need the bike that next weekend. Well after they had my bike for a week I called them to see if it was going to be ready the guy that answer the phone went to look and came back and told me all the parts are setting next to the bike in the box. Well I said they have not touch it yet. I was not a happy camper. Then I find out they was still missing four parts. Well after me telling them I was not happy with them for having me bring it and saying they had all the parts but the one and plus that we talk about me bring it in when they had all of them and ready to do the job. I got my bike back the next evening with the parts they had in on it. Then the service manager tells me that when the windshield, front headlight ring, and reflector for crash bar for saddlebag was in I could bring it back and they would put it on while I waited. So I get a call yesterday and they said the rest of the stuff was there. Could I bring it in and they would put them on. I said you get them on while I wait today they said no we will have them on by Friday. I said that’s not want I was told the last time I pick the bike up. So I told them I would bring it in today. But that I need the bike Friday because I had a field meet to go to this weekend. Well after we had talk on the phone. I got to thinking they had not done good on their word has far timing. So I went up to their shop and got the rest of the parts and brought them home and put them on myself. I got the parts on in about two hours. Bike is now all done and back looking like it should. So I would have to say I give them a grade of D. The work they did was done right it’s just what they tell you and what really happen is off .
  25. Well it was time to replace my rear tire. So with all the reading I have done on here I decided to go with the e3. I started checking around on prices, on line, and several dealers. Called Team Power Sports in Garner N.C. and got the best price. Got a new rear elite 3 Dyna Beads and installed on bike for just a hair less than $215.00. I don't think that was bad at all. They had the best price on the tire from the get go. The service writer told me after words, installation should have been more because it was a venture. Code date on tire 0511. Love this sight and ALL the useful information. Thanks Guys & Gals, Melvin
