  1. I got the collector off, cut it open and removed a bunch of loose baffling, also noticed that the left side exit pipe had a crack where it is welded to the collector body, the crack was about 3/4 of the way around. I took it to a local welder, he fixed the crack and welded a new stainless steel plate over the opening, and also rewelded all of the tacks that hold on the chrome covers. $30, not too bad! Also decided to remove the airbox, clean the oil out of it, and remove the breather tubes. I used a rubber tube with a 90 degree bend off of the "twinkie" so the hose exits to the side with a filter on it. I also drained the oil down to half way in the sightglass, that should help. I just got it back together, and it runs smoother than before, and sounds great, a deeper sound, and no rattling or leaking sounds. I'm really surprised that these changes would make such a difference to the way the bike runs, it's a lot smoother. Is it possible that removing the breather tubes and fixing the exhaust leaks could make it run better? Removing the collector was not a hard job, I only broke 1 clamp bolt, the rest were ok. If your thinking about tackling this job, get to it. Next project, installing the Road King pipes! I can't wait to see what they look and sound like. Briley.
  2. hey guys newbie here and first post, i read thru some of the previous posts but didnt find my solution so here goes, just got and 1st 1984 yamaha venture,41k miles, runs like a top,all the carbs were just cleaned and synced, has new plugs also,oh yea and the tank was cleaned while the carbs were off have reciepts for all this work, anyway after it warms up runs great, perfect idle no misses fires up 1st try everytime after warm, but i live in florida so no cold mornings here lol,but every morning i start it up even if im not going out and i have to turn it over a couple times (without choke) then just barely choke it to get it started everytime, and have to warm it up at least 5 minutes before i go,now this isnt the biggest deal in the world but was wondering is it normal? and if not what else is there to check? i mean it runs and idles perfect never a backfire or miss,so im assuming timings good and it just had all that other work, and i put new filter and plugs in myself,so any ideas or should i just live with it? and going to say hi in the welcome section after this but im a 1st time yamaha owner and i luv it,im in st.pete florida, thnx guys for any and all advise
  3. I was changing the plugs and putting in new air filters and noticed something I had bever seen and was wondering what it might be. On the right side of the bike right behind the rear carb there is a small tube that runs from right side torwards the left side. It is moounted on the back side of the carb and has a little knob on it that you can rotate. Does anyone know what it is for?
  4. Here is a pic of the fuse panel. What do you think? Bike runs, but no turn signals. Thanks in advance, Don
  5. He'll be 14 in February, so it is a good time to get him started on motorcycles. So, as of yesterday evening he owns his own 1993 Suzuki DR125E. It's been ridden hard, and needs a lot of work, but it runs good and we don't have to worry about breaking anything on it. Not too bad for $400. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e330/rentalguy1/012-1.jpg
  6. First I would like to thank the guy who asked if I had the lower cowlings off. I synced the carbs last night, rode today no better. On the test ride held my hand over left air box opening bike immediatly ran better. Came home took two shop rags folded in half and taped over front of air boxes one each side. Bike now runs great. Either forcing to much air or creating a vacuum and starving the carbs of air.
  7. I just bought a 06 rsv midnight, 5000 miles, runs good first and second after that not so good. Anybody close to central Iowa who wants to show how to sync carbs thanks for the help.
  8. Hello! I just purchased a 1983 Venture and when I rode it home the idle stuck at about 2500. The bike starts and runs fine, but the idle will not slow down. Any suggestions?
  9. Go to Youtube - type in 1986 venture carbs. It's the video by jamkitful 1986 VR carburation problem REDUX Ok. Here's a link to the video of the problem with my bike... Dont know if anyone can glean anything from it but ??? I did all the previous tasks that everyone mentioned - tightened the airbox down, made sure there are no leaks, etc. etc. Still the bike runs extremely bad (almost like three cylinders). It wont take throttle (barely). It runs a little better on choke than off choke but still bogs down and eventually dies. I'm starting to think the guy that cleaned the carbs just missed or messed something up?? Either that or maybe it just needs synchronized (though I doubt that would make it runs this bad)? If anyone has any further ideas I can check before I sdend this thing to the scrap heap - I would be appreciative. Thanks again.
  10. Several months after receiving my Carbtune, I finally took the time to sync my carbs. MAN what a difference. No more backfiring when letting of the gas and runs so much smoother!!! Freebird, thanks for the detailed write up!!
  11. After being fed up with carb issues and running on 3 for awhile, I finally got another set of carbs from a member who was parting out and had redone carbs. I installed carbs and it was great to run on all four again. Seemed to stumble a bit at low RPM so I put the sync to it and got it all staighted out. Ran great for about 50 miles, then started running like crap. Seems to fall on it's face and die when you give it gas. Runs great at 5k-7k rpm.. The diaphrams and slides are all in great shape. Fuel filter is new, idles great. No air leaks I can find. Any ideas O' Venture guru's? A BMW 1200 LT is looking appealing right now, but I still love the 1st gen look and power (when it runs right).
  12. My lovely 02 VENTURE has a problem (1st one ever, besides me). She runs great down the road then she just acts like she runs out of gas, pull over starts right up then does it again then hard start then repeats and would not start. Had it towed home and she starts up now. Any ideas??? Thank you in advance for your help...........................Ron
  13. hello still having idling problem I went down the list of things to check. I resoldered the pins on the tci, removed the stop switch and cleaned it. took all the conectors aprt and cleaned them, changed the plug wires and plugs but it still want idle.It starts and runs when the choke is on,but when it warms up and the choke shuts off and it starts to idle the tack drops to 0 and it starts to back fire thru the tail pipe it will idle but is very low all most the point where it shuts off. on the road it runs good but when you let off to stop the tack will drop and it starts the backfiring. when I am idling it seems to be loading up bad you get a lot of fumes from the tail pipe. Is there some way to check the tci box to see if it is bad.I would like to try that before I take it to the shop. around here its so costly they want your right arm and your first born. thanks alot Darrell
  14. So, What was the verdict on your valve shims? How many needed to be adjusted and were they tight or loose? Do you notice a difference in the way it runs, if so, what difference?
  15. just purchesed a 1988 royal I am new to yamaha and dont know to much about them. new to internet to so my spelling will be bad. after riding for a couple days, the rpm drop to o when I am setting at a red light and it starts back firing. Give it some gas and it runs fine. It runs fine downd the road no missing or back fireing. could this be the diaphram in the carb or could it be electical. where can I find a service for it.I have been reading alot of the threads on this sight and sure helps I am glad I joined. thanks Motorhead 704
  16. OK folks...I know it's kind of late notice but I had posted before that I would try to see if we could get a discount on Dyno runs at a local shop about 4 miles up the road. I had noticed a new sign in front that said "Dyno now available". I stopped and talked to him today. He usually charges $90.00 for a Dyno run that does not include tuning. He said that if we had enough people interested, he would do them for $40.00 each. I personally don't see the need for one but if enough of you are interested, I will call him back tomorrow and let him know. He has to do them in the late evening/night due to the noise and the fact that there is another business next door to him. So...it's your call.
  17. well i came home about 2 hours ago after picking up some choke and puke for dinner. when i saw a nice officer looking over the motorcycle. i parked the car got out and said officer is there something wrong? he said well i been driving by here for the past week and noticed this motorcycle is still parked in the same spot. so im writing up a tow it sticker? i asked did you run the plates to see who it might belong too? he said im about to do that? i said well im the owner and i live right there. in that apartment thats about 14 feet from the bike. is my front door. he said oh well you should move that bike so we know its not stolen and abandon? i didnt want to tell him it was coverd last 6 days so what makes him think someone just up and left it? and it has current tabs? today i pulled the cover off. to do some cleaning on it before i install the master that will be comming shortly.. and explained i do not have off street parking here. as do the other 2 renters. but to make him happy i fired up the bike to show it runs. left it in neutral and pushed it 5 feet backwards. therefore moving the bike. he said ok it runs and it has been moved. i said yep thanks. he then said i will be back in 72 hours to make sure its moved again? damn what a jerk. if he would have put that damn super sticky red ticket on my new windshield. i might have went to jail.
  18. Do the carb manifolds on a second gen have the enternal metal sleeve/liner like those on a first gen?? I just took a look at those on the '99 and they are cracked a bunch. Motor runs good tho.....
  19. Hi; I haven't seen this problem before so here goes. I got a cheap 87 VR 1300, the bike runs OK but rough ran Seafome thru it changed plugs. It helped a Little but still very rough Idle and back firing some manly on deceleration. I decided to sync. the carbs. Problem is the bike runs so rough the vacuum gages bounce so fast you cant see then, they just vibrate in a range of about 1/3 the gage blindingly fast? I have a sinking feeling its the valves are out of adjustment some thing fierce but thats just a guess. I'm hoping some one here is familiar with this condition and can give me a hand, any thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Pete
  20. when i go to start my 86 vr.....i hit the starter, it gives a half turn of the motor, hesitates for a sec then vrooom....its running.....always does it.....never leaves me stranded. any ideas why? also......my temp guage runs higher than i like to see it. never overheats but whats normal? there r no numbers to see actual temp. ???? thanks!
  21. 2 cans of Sea foam,( I see that they have a new style of can) a repeat of my sync skills and hard riding to get most of the kinks out Now Im rrunning without that ball bearing runs fine there is a slight back pressure from the right pipe...when I down shift to first
  22. I talked with them yesterday, it seems there was a delay in the order because the factory only runs these big ones so often. 25 should be ready next week.
  23. Finally got a pretty Saturday to take the bike out and get the riding itch out of my britches. I've done a bunch of work on the bike over the winter and RandyA came over and helped me with carb diaphragms and lower in the needles. This is just my first impression of the improvement in performance, but SON OF A ______!!!! That puppy is fast now, I can't believe how much better it runs. Thanks Randy, you set me up right! Here are some pics of the bike now that I've worked on her for the past 3 months. http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b303/elmicko2002/PICT0014.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b303/elmicko2002/PICT0016.jpg Randy, I believe I owe you a few more beers. Whoo Hooo!!!!
  24. My black cloud is still hanging around I guess. As most of you know I lost my daily ride and trashed the clutch in my Saab. Anyway I was stuck without transportation. Stopped at car lot and grabbed a 2002 Tarus that seemed to run fair. It was dirty. I cleaned it up and it has scratches and stains all over. To make it worse the Warden (trying to help) washed it whith a plastic abrasiave pad and Soft Scrub. Now it does have scratches all over. That is not my problem she was trying to help and just didn't know what she was doing. They could probally be buffed out. My problem is I drove it for over 2 months. Had no reason to jack it up tires are good and it runs as good as a new one. Started making a thumping in the rear when you hit a bump the right way. So I looked under it and one of the pins that connect the rear strut to the sway bar was rusted into. No big deal I stopped at the parts store and picked one up to replace it. Body wise this thing looks good except for all the scratches. I started to jack it up to replace the pin. Jack went against plastic trim that runs along the rocker panels where it is supposed to go. Jack went up thur rocker panel and car didn't go up . Several handfulls of rust fell out from under the trim. I stopped and didn't go any farther before jack came thru floorboad. Question is did I just pay 4000.00 bucks to have a car for 2 months. Car lot owner's assistant promised they would call me back. Hasn't happened and I don't think he will unless he wants me to pay for anything they do to this thing. Didn't mean to write a book just a little ticked with this and thought someone would know what I ought to do. I was liking the Tarus and it runs great. Not as powerfull as my Buick and not as good on gas milage but I just got in a hurry and grabbed something with wheels on it. Thought I had gotten lucky for a change. NOPE!! This rust was complletly hidden by the trim. Is the car lot owner legal obligation to help me with this?? There was a 1000 mile or something like that power train warrenty. Trip to beach took care of that.
  25. I did stupid Things yesterday... I took the '09 Vmax and rode to the Hockenheim Ring to go Drag Racing ... I did four Runs on the perfect Pro-Prepared Raceway and came home safe and sound, but very exhausted. It was a very hot Day and the Line-up Organisation was not so good. I did four Runs and came out not to good.... Here are my Results ... metric http://wkhost.webkicks.de/squeeze/Docs/09/DragZeiten.jpg and imperial http://wkhost.webkicks.de/squeeze/Docs/09/Hockenheim08082009mph.jpg I screwed up in first Run, because i realized at around 1/8 Mile, that i have some Remainder on the Throttle Grip to achieve Full Throttle. Second Runs wasn't feeling bad. My Wrist took over for a Moment in the 3rd Run because i went over a small Patch of Oil breaking the rear Tire loose for a Moment. Forth Run wasn't feeling too bad, but my Body felt exhausted and overheating, nothing special that i recall there. Times at low 12 Seconds are whimpy seeing the Bike and what other Riders do with it in US. A Buddy of mine ran 12.0 in his first Run and continously improved to 11.007 in his 4th Run. There were probably around 2 or 3 Thousand Spectators on the Stands after noon. It was Kind of Fun and truely a special Expirience, I'd do it again if there's a Chance. I ran Part of the Road Racer Track on the Way back to the Pits and this was Fun too. Closed Circuit with no oncoming Traffic ... I evened out the Profile of rear Tire immediately after flattening it out out at the Pre Start Burn Out.
