  1. Where can one order Passenger Arm Rests that fits MKII?
  2. Anyone knows approximately the speed of an MKII at low redlined and high redlined in each gear?
  3. I have an MKII. 1) I just like to know if the MKI has a 17mm nut where the black plastic cover goes over the nut at the bent. 2) Also what is the biggest socket that will fit into that same opening ignoring the 17mm nut. On my MKII a Craftsman 19mm socket is the biggest socket that fits into that hole. Appreciate someone providing that information.
  4. KIC

    92 versus 89

I have an opportunity to go look at/possibly buy a 92 Venture as a parts bike. Just confirming that parts on a 92 would easily work on an 89 ? They are both still a MKII. Any parts that wouldn't work for any reason ?
  5. Ok, I've been gathering parts for my R1 upgrade for my '84 for a while. Got the calipers a while back and a set of MKII rotors have been hanging on the wall for a while. I had bought a set of MKII forks during the summer and they were in such bad shape I scrapped them. The PO, before they were listed on eBay had beat the daylights out of the lowers and scarred the upper so bad it destroyed any chance of ever getting a seal to seat again. So this is where I'm confused today. I bought another set of forks off eBay listed as off an '87. The pics looked ok and all the parts seemed to be there. But, when they arrived today I took them down to clean them up and strip them down I noticed they were different from the last set I bought. The anti-dives (electric) mount on the front of the fork, not the side like the MKII pics I have seen from you guys in the past. Then what caught my attention was that there was no cinch bolt on the one side. The outer section is threaded for the axle with the shoulder for the axle to ride on in the inner section. Did I miss something somewhere? I thought the axles were the same of both MKI & MKII. But the AD's on the front threw me. Does the MKI axle thread into the lower or am I going to need a different axle? The flanges for the R1's line up fine. Every thing else looks like it should. So tell me what I am looking at. Mike
  6. Was wondering if anyone has experienced a drop in MPG after installing the widest and tallest Clearview shield on long distance, Interstate riding? If so can you provide some stats. Especially interested in stats for MKII.
  7. Looking for a MKII starter motor as i believe they have 4 brushes instead of the stock two in 83. thank you very much -CJ
  8. i am looking for all the rubber brake lines for a 86 mkII. if you have upgraded to new braided lines if i could borrow your old ones and i can return them to you if you want. i have a vendor within walking distance of my house who does custom brake lines and i want to give him a try. he needs a sample set to make the new ones. let me know if you can help or pm me. thanks , Scott
  9. It’s that time of the year when many of us First Gen. VR owners are working on our bikes, so I thought I would take a moment and point out an issue I have discovered. After rebuilding over 100 First Gen. MKII VR (1986 to 1993) Rear Brake Calipers, I have noticed a trend that I wanted to share with you. Given that the MKII VR Rear Brake Calipers are at least 19 years old, and could be as old as 26 years, in the case of the 1986 model, Plus the rear of the MKII VR has one of the largest diameter rear rotors ever placed on a production motorcycle. The surface footage that is generated at the point of contact of the brake pads is so great, that the steel backing plates of the brake pads actually wear a groove in the Caliper Body! I have attached some pics of the groove worn in the body of the MKII VR caliper below. Now, this only happens on ONE side of the caliper body, so great care must be taken when inspecting the caliper when you change Rear Brake Pads. You will find this groove on the side of the rear caliper closest to the front of the motorcycle, and this is why many MKII VR owners miss this wear groove. If you find that your rear caliper has this wear groove, then replacement of the caliper is necessary. The reason being is the brake pads get trapped in this groove, and will not back off of the rotor after the rear brake has been released, causing the rotor to overheat and warp, or lock up. If the groove is not very deep, you still get reduced brake pad wear because the brake pads are staying in constant contact with the rotor. The first pic shows a cleaned up set of MKII VR Rear Caliper halves. The arrows are pointing to the groove cut in the Caliper Body by the Brake Pad Backing Plate. The next two pics are uncleaned caliper halves. This is most likely what the groove is going to look like when you remove the brake pads to replace them. I hope this information helps you with any pesky little rear brake problems you may be having. Earl
  10. I think that any MKII parts bike would be ok for my 91 VR. I'm just wondering if besides finding another 91 VR if there might be a priority in prefered MKII years. Like would a 92 or 93 be better than one 90 to 86? Then in the 90 to 86 are there certain years that might better than others?
  11. I think that a more fun and fair comparison should be more apples to apples. Give your experience and opinion for your specific year. I purchased a new 80 Goldwing and love it. I did not like the other competitor’s models at all if they actually had a competitor. I think that the only competitor was the BMW and that time I think BMW was the sport touring standard. BMW just was too expensive for me; also I really did not like the BMWs lines. Just one complaint and that is the 80 Goldwings cornering capabilities. I’m no hot dog but one main fun part of motorcycling was cornering. The cornering ability of the 80 Goldwing caught me my surprised, after the purchase. The 80 Goldwing was my 1st Honda for previously I owned a small 1969 90cc Kawasaki then a 1974 Yamaha TX500 then a 1974 Yamaha YZ125. So I did not have a Honda preference. I sold my 80 Goldwing for raising a family. 27 years later I got the Touring Bike itch with some nostalgic feelings. I wanted my 80 Goldwing back for nostalgic reasons and wanted to own a collectable. It was kind of like wanting to have your 57 Chev back. I found some beautiful 80 Goldwings, however in my search, the Yamaha Venture surfaced. I recalled in 83 when the Venture was introduced and Wow I wanted one even though I was selling my 80 Goldwing. I toss and turned between the 80’s Goldwing and the Venture MKI or MKII. Did a lot of soul searching and settled on the MKII. Like make vehicles history the design goes through some ugly years. Like the Mustang, some of the Mustang’s years were butt ugly. The Goldwing outwardly design changed a lot between 1980 and 1993 and I did not like most of those years design. I’m limiting to 1980 thru 1993 for my purchased, for the MKI and MKII looks are really similar, and in my pocket books range. The MKII got most of the points. I personally liked its design better than the Goldwings, but the Goldwings reverse weighted in very heavily. Then the Goldwings cornering ability came into play. Venture was more top heavy, The engine size really was not a factor for the 80 Wings 1100cc was plenty for me. I would have given the MKI more consideration but the famous 2nd rear issue really done it in. Also the Goldwings seems to be in general more expensive than the Venture in similar condition. Oh I also did like the Wings plastic for the sole purpose when cleaning the bike, But then the plastics took away from the motorcycle looks. So would I prefer my 89 Venture to a Goldwing up to 1993. The Venture won. Now today if I were to buy a new bike and I could afford it. The choice would be between the BMW and the Goldwing and without any test drives yet I’m leaning to the Goldwing. Maybe I should just ride into the BMW and Honda dealer for a test drive. Then maybe I better not, For what I don’t know and experience won’t hurt me. Todays Venture would not even be in the selection. I’ve heard many talk about the riding comfort. I’ve never really had an issue with comfort for I seem to adapt to the Bikes configuration. So there, you have my apple to apple comparision. What is your apple to apple comparision?
  12. If you have a set of arm rest for the 1st Gen MKII in Black or Gray for sale, please PM me.
  13. What heated grips would you recommend for a 91 VR MKII. What are the features one should look for in heated grips.
  14. This may be reaching but is there a Blue Tooth interface for the MKII communication system.
  15. Does someone have some procedure instructions on how to install Roto Covers on a MKII before I just go taking to many things off?
  16. Anyone have one of these you would like to get rid of. Eithor side would do. http://thumbs2.ebaystatic.com/m/mDEiy1nIJEDDfzXM_wEgYCA/140.jpg
  17. Is there a secrete in how to remove the left and right lower air vents on an MKII?
  18. Anyone have a good method of draining the gas tank on a MKII?
  19. Would like to know how and where you mounted your GPS on a 1st Gen MKII. Pictures would be appreciated.
  20. I need a usable, front rotor off an MKII. Right or left per Bongo. I am putting it on rear wheel as part of my VMax wheel conversion. I have to use the VMax rear brake and mounting setup due to swing arm clearance issues. The VMax uses a 282 rear rotor, which is the same diameter as a 1st gen front. 1st gen is 1mm thicker, but it will work for what I am doing. MKII rear brake setup I have on now with the 320mm rotor isn't even close to being able to make to work due to the offset in the floating rotor design. I could make my 298mm MKI rear rotor work, but it wouldn't be an exact match either. Gary
  21. First the sightings. Took a wonderful ride up in the Thumb of Michigan yesterday and on the way up saw two MKII south of Vasser in the roadside park on M15. Farther up MKII heading south on Vasser Rd just south of Wisner. MKII on M25 in Owendale. MKII south of Caseville on M25. MKII North of caseville on M25. Then another MKII parked at the Grindstone Bar in Grindstone. I spent the night with a friend in Grindstone. On the way back today lost count on how many MKII I saw heading North into the Thumb. Saw NO second Gens. Must not of been able to keep up. Now for the MUCH MORE. From Caseville to Port Austin which runs along Lake Huron beautiful Women in bikinis everywhere. What a scenic ride for these poor old eyes. Would still be up there but the darn Daughter kept calling me all night wanting to know how early I was leaving to get her and bring her home, she wanted to come home. So I get up early this morning, she's not answering her phone so I head straight home (not along lake shore) see just hundreds of bikes heading up, get home , call her to tell her I'm coming to get her, AND SHE DON'T WANT TO COME HOME!!! They are having a Birthday party for her friend where she was staying and wants to stay. I could of been setting on the deck at Duffy's in Caseville sipping a beer and admiring the scenery. It's not everyday you can see so much scenery setting in one spot. No I didn't take no pictures (camera would of melted). I just appreciate the scenic beauty God put on this Earth for us all to enjoy. Oh to be 25 again (I could ride longer)
  22. Never again will i remove an exhaust collector from a MKII. finally after TWO years of dealing with "life", i got back to my 86vr. lost my "religion", 14 times, before i got the blamed thing off! NOW! if you haven't had your MKII collector off, you might need to do a double check. mine has rusted out/through, about 3/4 of the circumference on ALL 4 exit pipes.only option is to take it to work and fabricate all new connections. one good thing!!!!!! my baffles are all still good! lol just jt
  23. Installed my new custom seat and went out for a ride. Life is good! Then I went over a rough spot in the road and all of a sudden a loud noise and when I look in my rear view mirror....there's my trunk. Bouncing down the road like a freaking basketball! I know I had it latched good, but apparently I forgot to set the lock to 'locked'. Argh! So, does anybody know if MKII trunks are compatible with MKI bikes? There's one on eBay that's the right color, but it's an '87 and mines an '83. They look the same but just wanna make sure.
  24. Anybody know how to rebuild the speedo on a MKII? I have no idea where to start. My speedo on my 91 quiite working the other day. The odometer and the trip odometer are functioning so Im assuming its not the cable. Just not reading how fast Im going. Had to drive home using the tach to gestimate how fast I was going. Nay help will be appreciated. David
  25. Anybody have any they want to part with? I mounted a MKII trunk on my MKI. I think it looks good and there is tons more room in there. For right now I have my 84 antenna mount kind of jerry rigged to do the job. But I need the MKII mounts to do the job right. I only have one antenna so I only really need one, but I would find a use for another if there's one available. Lik for a small flag or similar. Thanks, Bill
