  1. So, after 2 years of having a couple of local shops (with the same migrating staff) adjust carbs for poor fuel mileage and backfiring (particularly on deceleration), I went to another shop after they couldn't seem to fix the issues. He was asking a series of different questions about valve adjustments, etc that the other shops weren't. He said he wanted to do a leak down test...One reading was a wopping 83%. So, I understand I am in for a valve job after getting jerked around with carb adjustments for 2 years to try to fix my measely 200-250 km per tank and decel backfiring. The new-to-me shop is a one-man shop, charges a much more reasonable hourly rate than others I have been going to, and has been seemingly much more knowledgeable. One question...just because I am tired of being jerked around....what does a valve job on an 03 Venture generally go for? I understand between the leak-down test, the valve job and whatever else comes into play I am looking at the better part of 2500-3K. Thanks
  2. I just finished installing a 2nd gen starter on my 1st gen 86 VR. It clearly solved the slow cranking. I cant say that I enjoyed the job. It wasn't a difficult job but you have to remove a lot of parts to get to the starter. I purchased new O-rings for the connections at the thermostat housing. Is a good idea to lube the rings with anything to help with reassembly and sealing? Maybe water soluble Vaseline or silicone?
  3. Has anybody seen or heard from GunnyButch In a while? Last I see is that his last post was 2010... He had just had that awesome paint Job done on his Trike... Thanks, Jeff
  4. I ain't got enough to do so tonight I went back to school. Started a welding class. All types of welding. Two nights a week. Work out three nights a week. I might get a job!!
  5. Some of you have met our son, Dane at various meets. At 25, he's a graphic designer by trade, but has always had a love for creating his own art. When he was young, he was designing tatoo's for a lot of people around here. Then he got into painting. Now this past year he started airbrushing. He's done a lot of helmets, older bikes and now Camaro's. I have a female co worker that just bought a 2011 Harley Sportster 1200. She wanted a custom paint job, but not "girly". Here's a couple of pix of it. Thought he did a nice job and just had to share it! He is usually asked to do a lot of skulls, barb wire, what I consider "dark" art, so it was fun to see him branch out a little! Proud of the little bugger!
  6. Have any of you ever had the fairing off? What about swapped wiring harnesses. I want to swap the harness from my 83 with a CB to my 83 without. I believe this is going to be a job, so what are some of your opinions? Would it be easier to splice in the CB? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks- CJ
  7. I got my head back on straight , so I'm back , been in a funk for a little while but thats over . still got Whitey , she still runin good , has a leaking slave cyl. got to rebiuld it or get a new one . Got off the road and got a real job again , yep , back to braking RV's and charging to much . Now to catch up on all the posts I've missed Thom
  8. I would like to know if anyone in Fla or South Ga. is planning on doing a valve job on their Venture. I do not need one on my bike but I have read all the posts on our site and really want to try it. I plan on learning it and then helping our members out. I have a carbtune and could teach that now and do adjustment for members. The valve adjustment is very interesting to me and so I would like to help, watch and learn. Please let me know and I will drive to the event/maintenance day or days. I also would purchase a shim kit for all to use. If anyone has one for sale please let me know as well. I am more than ready to tackle this job. Thanks to Goose for his excellent write up on how to perform this maintenance task. thanks, DanC:cool10:
  9. Hope you made a bunch this holiday season!!!! I fixed it.
  10. To all the Toronto area members...please let me know if you know a young mechanically inclined person looking for a full time job. I work for a small company looking to train someone in industrial engine and pump assembly/repair. We are a distributor for John Deere, Kubota, and Ford industrial engines and Flowserve pumps located in Mississauga.
  11. Been using AVG free edition for several years up till now it did a good job. After doing a few different scans with other trusted online scanners, found 3 different Trojans hiding on my system ! I've got them cleaned out now and think it's time to switch AV programs . What AV programs are doing a good job these days?

  13. Our daughter Tiffany (the singer) went to Ft Lauderdale a couple weeks back to visit her boyfriend. He works on a privately owned yacht. Upon arriving back home, she announces that she's moving because she now has a job on the same yacht. She flew out this morning. Ohhhh how I wish I was younger ... I am envious but wish her all the best. They set sail for the Bahamas in a couple weeks and after that, it's off to such places as Spain.... what a tough life it will be for her .... Check it out... http://www.moranyachts.com/Catalog/Yacht/?ID=577
  14. After having to go back to the eye surgeon and having to deal with a detached retina, instead of seeing some improvement, it has got worse. I called the Dr's office yesterday and they told me to come in immediately. It has now been determined that my loss of sight in my right eye is due to a lack of adequate blood flow. Unfortunately, this is not fixable. And, this goes back to being type 2 diabetic for 30 years and not always doing a good job keeping it in good control. After my marriage separation and divorce and losing about 50 pounds, I was able to get my diabetes in such good control that I had my A1C in the 6.4 range, which is very good, and that was after going off insulin. After my last A1C creeping back up to 8.3, I have now gone back on insulin. I have gained a few pounds back, but with this eye problem, loosing my job and dealing with some depression, I have not been getting the exercise I was getting. Now, my primary concern is to try to keep the other eye healthy. RandyA
  15. In the previous thread I told about the work done on the bike and the new paint job. Well, today I went to the garage to get the bike to add running lights and a Strebel horn I had purchased and when I got the bike out, I discovered the clutch fluid had leaked out of the cylinder at the handle and dripped on the fairing!!! My beautiful paint job is ruined and the fairing has split into 6 pieces. I am heart broken. I removed the fairing and washed all the pieces in soapy water and am going to have to try to save the fairing. Question: What can I do to glue it back together and what else can I do to fix the degradation in the plastic. Jim
  16. Some people here knew that I lost my job in June 2010 due to business necessity. They did offer me a seasonal job for winters which I took. After looking for a job all summer with no success, they called me back Oct 1,2010 for the winter. In April 2011 they asked me if I would like to stick around for the summer and I accepted. In Aug 2011 they offered my full time postion back with all benifits like I had never left, which I accepted. So...I am back to work full time. At my age tho....I did miss having the summer off and found out it wouldn't take much for me to retire..... If not for the better health insurance,( we was on my wife's for awhile) I could have stayed on seasonal and just collected unemployment for a few months each summer.
  17. Just finnished installing the new clutch in my Venture. New clutch disks and PCW HD spring kit. Whoever did the last job had 3 disks in wrong and the pressure plate not lined up. Not sure if that makes all that much differance but it doesn't jerk when I put it into gear now. The clutch lever isn't much different than it was before. This was an easy install! I HAD to buy new tools to do the job right.....right. Once again thank you all very much for all the info on the clutch. Wayne
  18. So I am out in the back yard working on the house. This white van pulls up and the driver asks if I am interested in some asphalt work. He says that he is doing a major job in the area and will have some leftover asphalt, just enough to do my gravel drive. He then pulls a magnetic sign out of the back seat to show me who he is and the sign says that his rate is only $4.65 per sq ft. He said that since I would be helping him out by using his excess material he would do my job for $2.00 per sq ft. Hmmm odd that a contractor would keep his magnetic sign in the back seat and not where it could do some good. Looking at the area I determind it to be 20 x 30 or 600 sq ft. I asked him if he agreed with my area assessment and he said yes. He then told me that he could do the job for just $1375. Red flag number one. I said that was still more than I could afford right now and he dropped the job to $1000. I thought that was interesting and asked if I could call him back later tonight to let him know. I then asked him for a business card. He said he did not have one with him. they were all in his other truck at the job site. What business owner does not keep his wallet stuffed with cards. Red flag number 2. I did get his name and phone number. The phone number was from Framingham MA. I am in WI. Why would a local contractor have an out of state phone number. Red flag no 3 As soon as I got in the house after finishing what I was working on, I got on the puter ad Googled William Stanley and the phone number and got scam alerts from all over the country. They even had his picture in a NJ courtroom getting convicted of the paving scam. OK now I have a boatload of red flags. After reading the scam stuff, this guys spiel matched right down to his name and picture. The way the scam works is that he offers to do cut rate work for a real good price. once you accept he shows up and does some work and then hits you with a drastically inflated bill of more than 10 times the agreed price. He then gets nasty and threatens to take a contractors lien on your property. This guy is constantly moving across state lines. I have instructed my GF that if anyone shows up to try to do work to not answer the door or talk to them, call 911 immediately and THEN call me at work.
  19. Just relocated the fuel filter on my 96 Royal Star yesterday after reading several posts on this site. It was an easy job and well worth while for future maintenance. The hardest part of the job was the mounting bolt and nut for the Roll-Over Valve that so many described as a PITA. To resolve this I put the bolt through the hole from the back of the metal bracket and put the nut on the front side with some loc-tite and now have a threaded stud that will stay in place. Just put the plastic holder on the bolt and install a lock washer and another nut. This doesn't have any earth-shattering significance but may be a tip that some might find useful. Happy, safe riding Doug
  20. 74k on my ’06 RSV and running great, but time was long past due for the valve adjustment. I have done all maintenance work in the past but the valve adjustment with shims and special tools seemed a little much for me, and wow, did I guess that right. After reading a post a week or so ago and seeing Muffinman’s comments I decided to give him a call and make an appointment to take my RSV to his place in NC. He was great, ordered new plugs, gasket set, fuel filter and he had the shims we were likely to need. He said something about color tuning and I said ‘what’s that” I balance the carbs my self. He said we should do it. What a difference. Here is the story, my RSV for the first 50K or so always went to reserve tank at 200 miles, like clock work, almost never varied more than a mile or two, last 10K or so it was looking for the reserve tank around 175 miles. Fuel mileage, was always 42-44mpg for the first 50K the started dropping to 38-42 lately. Well we did the valves, one intake tight by .001 and two exhaust open by .004, not bad enough to cause any damage yet, nor would I think any effect on mileage. The carb balance was off a little but not too bad, but the color tuning really made a change. Here is what we have now, noticeably more power in 2nd,3rd &4th and get this, mileage very, very carefully checked and getting 46.8 mpg, ½ of the mileage check was with two up and the other ½ solo. Now the bike was looking to go to reserve an 214 miles instead of 200 miles as when new, 175 miles lately. We spent a solid 6 hours, and we both worked, I don’t believe any one could do the job in less than 8 hr, Muffinman did a fabulous job and although a lot work I had a good time working with him, and I would say that unless your really good it’s not a job to mess with by your self, there are some parts that I doubt one would ever figure out with help. Great job, thanks Jeff
  21. Went for a ride today, and started noticing the handlebars sticking a little. I believe my head bearings needed to be repacked or replaced. Is the a tough job?
  22. I LOVE MY JOB! If you don't laugh out loud after you read this you are in a coma! This is even funnier when you realize it's real! Next time you have a bad day at work think of this guy. Bob is a commercial saturation diver for Global Divers in Louisiana . He performs underwater repairs on offshore drilling rigs. Below is an E-mail he sent to his sister. She then sent it to radio station 103.5 FM in Indiana, who was sponsoring a worst job experience contest. Needless to say, she won. ~Hi Sue, Just another note from your bottom-dwelling brother. Last week I had a bad day at the office. I know you've been feeling down lately at work, so I thought I would share my dilemma with you to make you realize it's not so bad after all. Before I can tell you what happened to me, I first must bore you with a few technicalities of my job. As you know, my office lies at the bottom of the sea. I wear a suit to the office. It's a wet suit. This time of year the water is quite cool. So what we do to keep warm is this: We have a diesel powered industrial water heater. This $20,000 piece of equipment sucks the water out of the sea. It heats it to a delightful temperature. It then pumps it down to the diver through a garden hose, which is taped to the air hose. Now this sounds like a darn good plan, and I've used it several times with no complaints. What I do, when I get to the bottom and start working, is take the hose and stuff it down the back of my wet suit. This floods my whole suit with warm water. It's like working in a Jacuzzi. Everything was going well until all of a sudden, my butt started to itch. So, of course, I scratched it. This only made things worse. Within a few seconds my ass started to burn. I pulled the hose out from my back, but the damage was done. In agony I realized what had happened. The hot water machine had sucked up a jellyfish and pumped it into my suit. Now, since I don't have any hair on my back, the jellyfish couldn't stick to it, however, the crack of my ass was not as fortunate.. When I scratched what I thought was an itch, I was actually grinding the jellyfish into the crack of my ass. I informed the dive supervisor of my dilemma over the communicator. His instructions were unclear due to the fact that he, along with five other divers, were all laughing hysterically. Needless to say, I aborted the dive. I was instructed to make three agonizing in-water decompression stops totaling thirty-five minutes before I could reach the surface to begin my chamber dry decompression. When I arrived at the surface, I was wearing nothing but my brass helmet. As I climbed out of the water, the medic, with tears of laughter running down his face, handed me a tube of cream and told me to rub it on my butt as soon as I got in the chamber. The cream put the fire out, but I couldn't **** for two days because my ass was swollen shut. So, next time you're having a bad day at work, think about how much worse it would be if you had a jellyfish shoved up your ass. Now repeat to yourself, 'I love my job, I love my job, I love my job.' Whenever you have a bad day, ask yourself, is this a jellyfish bad day? May you NEVER have a jellyfish bad day! !!!! Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift. ~
  23. :(Well it has finally hit home. The great budget cut axe has fallen. The wife has been told she will no longer have a job teaching next year. I guess our Governor and President are getting what they want, ignorant kids. First they attack the teachers with pay cuts and no more long term contracts and now cut them out of a job. The outragous amount of pay (which is 1/2 what the private sector pays) and the great benefits (900.00 after 30 years of service) is breaking the state and federal bank I guess, couldn't be their pay of course. Not sure how long we can hold on to the house but I guess toys will have to go. had a great vacation lined up this summer, no way now. My health is not so good anymore, but I guess I will try to get some sort of work to help get us by if the doc doesn't find cancer with my biopsy next month. Sorry for the rant but just needed someone to vent it on. Wish us luck please, maybe a miracle will happen and they will change their mind or she can find a new job that pays more than the minimum wage they are offering around here.
  24. Good job U.S. Military !!!!!!!!!!!! Beer30
  25. Actually I can't take credit for that. My son-in-law who is a journeyman mechanic did it, I just watched. As it turned out he did a totally professional job. We had trouble with one stator bolt that would not break loose. He had to actually take the stator assembly to his shop, weld a nut onto the bolt and then take it off. While he was there he cleaned it all up and then came back and he completed the install. We didn't solder the wires, he re-used the connector. Like I said he did a beautiful job. And I have to thank Brad (Squidley) for his comments as well. I'll be the first to admit I'm not a wrench. If I had attempted to do this solo my wife would have eventually found me curled up in the fetal position on the cold garage floor or sitting underneath my toolbox with a bottle of tequila gripped between my fists mumbling stark, imprecations against Yamaha, the government and realtors but not necessarily in that order. So here's the deal. Yeah so I don't know my Robertson's from my Philips head screw drivers. Who cares? I have a mechanic for a son-in-law. Anyway where was I...Oh yeah, the deal. I have a perfectly good OEM stator out of my 2004 RSV that I want to put in the classifieds and Ebay but I have no idea what it might be worth. Anyone have an idea what it might be worth? Thank you in advance. Chris in Red Deer, Alberta.
