Riding into work today, my '88 Venture Royale suddenly lost it's tachometer reading, mostly. It comes on occasionally. At the same time, the engine kind of lost control of it's speed, at least it would rev up and down with the throttle held at the same place. Made it very scary to corner, not knowing it would keep a steady speed. Any ideas on what is wrong? The cruise was off. The charging system is OK. There's gas in it - not full, but should be enough, so it shouldn't be surging the gas tank, though it felt a little like other bikes have when the fuel is about to cut out. Fuel Pump? Some kind of ignition problem? I'm not sure it's safe to ride home, even though it's only a few miles. Does the tachometer get it's signal from some component that controls fuel or spark? Becky -
I had to help out in our store in Dalton Ga. yesterday. I was on my way home and stopped to gas up my bike. As I was getting my gas a lady came out of the store,with a handful of bags. "We are out of gas", she said. I got my gas completely pumped but the car next to me only got 3 gallons in. When I got home I saw on TV that places all over the Atlanta,metro area were out of gas also. I took my wifes car and was going to go ahead and fill it up for her at my regular store on my route to work. I pulled up- slid my card-pumped in a nickles worth and bam they were out of gas. There were bags on all the pumps at the other 4 stores between there and home so she is stuck with a 1/2 tank of gas. Hopefully she will be able to get some by Tues. because that 1/2 tank will only take her to work and back 2&1/2 days! The police chief in Athens Ga. was advising people that were planning on coming to the UGA-Al. football game to not come if they couldn't make the round trip on 1 tank of gas. My daughter and son/nlaw were already on their way to the game. She called me from just east of Athens and said that from her house in Dalton,to where they were then only 3 places they had passed had any gas and the lines were way down the street and police were directing traffic. It is ridiculous to be afraid to go more than a tank away from home for fear of running out of gas. Sorry I just had to vent!

Where is the gas tank on a first Gen. ??? I am making somthing that will work great for a 2nd Gen, while the tank is off, but not sure if it will be of any help on a first gen... Thanks,

I recently had my bike towed down from Georgia to Florida. When it arrived the gas was not shut off and it ran terrible. The choke had to be open slightly to even get it running. Tech looked at bike... found battery cables loose but said all carbs needed cleaning and spark plugs replaced. I have 11,000.00 miles on bike... never had this problem before always ran great. Also Yamaha Tech charged $100.00 hr to fix carbs... whats your take on this ? Any suggestions about gas/ carbs ?

My 87 VR doesn't have a knob on the reserve valve for the gas tank. Anybody have one extra or can tell me where I can get one? Kevin

Hi All With the air pressure set as high as possible the front end will still bottom out when going over some bumps. I’m assuming I need new fork springs. Is this correct? The carburetors were supposedly rebuilt, but on the left side there is gas running out of the drain hose. I don’t know much about carbs, any ideas on what would cause this? Thanks Al -
about a half dozen times in the last few months, my 97 rstd has just shut down after about 1/2 mile. i pulled over opened the gas cap , thinking maybe a gas cap venting problem but i don't know. the bike starts back up and runs fine afterward. i was thinking gas cap vent problem or maybe ignition switch short but not sure. any ideas would be appriciated. thanks, thumper1

I recently put some 85.5 gas in my bike and couldn't tell any difference. I did however burn it all out before I put her to bed for the night. Has anyone used any of this stuff and had problems with it?

I am new to this site and learning to navagate it. I was wondering if the car tire would affect the gas mileage on the venture. I have a 2000 Venture and have ordered a federal 165/80/15 for the rear. This is my daily rider because of its great gas mileage, to and from work, so I am curious if anyone has noticed in change in their mileage after mounting a ct on the venture. I also own a 1997 valkyrie with a 205/60/16 on it and the ct did drop it mileage a couple of miles per tank, it only gets 27 mpg anyway. guess you can't have gut wrenching power and fuel economy together. I would also like to say that all this concern about the twisties, my valk is far more sure footed with the ct. I have to be careful not to tear the pegs off in sharp curves. I had to get use to it but now there is no way I would put a mc tire back on the rear. Thanks for allowing on your site. Gregg Freedom of the road for all.

I have a 08 RSV and just put 3k on it, I just noticed the vent tube had some gas coming out of it today? I have been smelling gas but havent seen it and I have said something to the tech the last time I took it in and they couldnt find anything. Does anyone have any ideas or is this normal? Thanks guys. Rode today from AR across MS to AL. Arkansas and Alabama gas prices seem very similar, just under $4. Prices in Mississippi were astounding! $3.53 a gallon in lots of places around Tupelo. How can they do that? What can't neighboring states? Yes, I know taxes are cheaper but not THAT much. Enquiring minds want to know. Lynn

Ordered 07/28/08 and received on 09/15/08.....falls within the 5 to 7 weeks. Easy install.......looks great. Standard height with gray tint and vent. I do see the gas cap reflection at times and would like suggestions on how you solve that problem. I really do not wish to paint the gas cap black. IndyDog RSV08

I was out riding around today and decided to stop at Golden Corral in Newnan. As I was pulling into the parking lot I noticed a couple getting off a bike. As I was walking in I passed by the bike and they had a severe gas leak, gas was running pretty steady onto the ground. I saw them inside and told the guy about the leak, and he said "Yeah I got a leak in the tank." They just continued on with moving in to get some chow. I could not believe that he was unconcerned with getting hit with a Hazmat violation, or that they were crazy enough to be riding like normal, stopping for chow, etc with a serious gas leak.

Gas prices up locally $0.45 already this morning to $4. Heard in city near by up to $5.05 for reg. Ike is going to cost everybody big time, no matter where you live. I wish the folks of Texas well, but it looks like you are going to get it! RandyA

i don,t know the about the gas prices elsewhere but it has gone up here 1.00 over night !! and the news people say there is plenty off gas here in Fla. Thom

I'm down here in Kissimmee visiting my Bro Hulk who's in Oceola Medical Center recovering from a Triple Valve job on his heart... He's a former Member here who's not real PC or WWW savy and seldom posted... I've been riding his 2000 RSV around which has been siting since Bike Week and had old gas in it... I've run a couple of cans of Sea Foam through it and now have new gas in it and it is running better but... I have to drag the clutch a little and over rev it a little to get it to take off from a stop without knocking/pinging... Could this be a syncing problem... It sometimes pings when reving in neutral.. He has never had the carbs synced and I'd like to fix it for him so it'll be ready to roll when he recovers... I'm down here until Wed. unless the hurricane changes our flight plans. Anybody got any ideas??

OK, I've only filled the tank on my VR 4 times so far and every time I've done it, I did it the same way I have on every bike I've ever owned. I filled it to the top! Yet when I fire up the bike, the red light goes blinky blinky and the gas pump icon shows up, the gauge registers no gas in the tank. It won't register on the guage until I've driven it enough to bring the gas level down a bit. Then, it seems like it drops like a rock until it's time to get gas again. Once the gas registers zero o the guage and the red light lights up, I hit the gas station and usually end up having only put in 4.1 gallons. Is this normal behavior for the fuel gauge on 1st generation VR's or do I need to service my tank float device somehow?

Another fantastic day in the NC mtns, there I was minding my own business, filling my tank at the local conv.store. When all of a sudden everyone is yelling "watch out" so I turn to see this big ole green dodge ram pick-up heading my way, with no one in it:scared: So I try to stop it, I am all of 5'5" 170lbs it aint happenin meanwhile a guy comes running up opens the driver door, to try to hit the brakes, I am calling him every name in the book, thinking its his truck, he yells hey man I am just trying to help, aint my truck, about then it crashes into my bike and flips it on its side, bike is pinned to gas pump on left and big-foot on rite:scared: gas pouring out the overflows. Truck wont start, so we gotta push it outta the way, just to get to the bike, now I am more than a little pxxxxxed. Well I found out I can lift the bike up by myself, and I dont have to back into it and use my legs LOL. Well she aint a virgin anymore?? Station owner wanted an incident report as he hit the pumps too so the Police were there and he does have ins. Aint banged up too bad, but it sure put a damper on my day. Craig

Cant believe that im happy to be paying $3.70 a gal gas today....I also couldnt believe a line forming to the street too. I just went a few blocks further and found another station at the same price without anyone by the pumps. Wow, if it ever hits $3.00 a gal again I might just have a stroke.

Well I installed the new clearview shield tented today I am 5'8" tall I bought the med 3" shorter the stock. I think it may be just a little short but not to bad. I took it out for a ride It did not take long to find out the clearview leans back more then the stock shield The sun hit the gas Cap and bulls eye the reflection hits the shield and where is it on that shied right at eye level so what is next? $250.00 later it will be hard to see and what a distraction. OK pull back into the house tell Teri get me that blue rag over there so I can put over the gas cap bing reflection gone next step gas cap cover ordered over the phone should be here next week. then I will try again. At the end of the day next shield well have no tent and if it is a clearview I will go with the large. The shield does look like it is will made when you order one though make sure of the hight you need. PS don't take off the cover it is shipped with in case you want to send back ask me how I know that, needless to say I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer I should have read the tag on the shield.

i am at a loss, here. three months ago, i did the starter clutch repair. i put 3 gallons of gas and 1/2 can of sea foam in the tank, started it and let it idle for about 20 minutes.this morning i went out to the shed to start it a(first time i've been out there in 3 months), and my gas tank is empty!!!! could it be that the sea foam in that concentration, caused the petcock gasket to deteriorate? any other ideas as to WHY? just jt

I finally bought me a carb sync tool and I can not wait to get it an see what kind of difference it makes in the gas milage on my ride. My 89 royale runs great but only gets 35 miles per gallon no matter what I do.

Today when I left home I got to the corner and noticed I didn't have a speedo or odememter. Stopped and checked all the lights and they were on as was the overdrive and cruise lights, so since I had a GPS I went on. On the way I stopped for gas when I started it back up everything was working again. Later in the day when I started it kind of paused, then started, but the odemeter and cloce and been reset. Any ideas
