  1. With the help of some of you ( Rocket, danob ), I got my clutch tore out and started to put it back together. I decided I just needed to take it in and have everything looked at so after I put the stack back in but before new seal and cover was on I tried to start it with no luck. It actually acts as if you are trying to start it in gear, it just wont roll over at all. Plus the clutch lever is like a rock. Now obviously I didn't put something back together right but have no clue what it is. I put all the plates back in exactly the way they came out well I thought but probably not. Anyone have any ideas. I need to get it running so I can at least get it to the shop, too nice of weather for it just to be sitting in pieces in the garage. Thanks
  2. Hi all. Still can't get my XVZ1200 84 model to run, I've sorted out the TCI unit, thanks Mike, and cleaned the carbs but it still refuses to start. I think I'll check and reset the ignition timing tomorrow, weather permitting. I think the problem's with the ignition timing because when the bike's turning over it's missing, giving out a loud bang every other spin, so that points straight to the ignition timing, right???
  3. :cool10:OH Happy Day! My youngest son finally landed a full time job a year and a half after he finished school. His degree is in physics and this job is right up that alley. He will be doing some kind of lab work. Yesterday he had his third interview with them and they called back in the afternoon to see if he could start this morning. He was up with the chickens bright eyed and bushy tailed at 7:30 (that's real early for him...LOL) and off to work with lunch in hand at 8:00. I told him he had bankers hours. Sure hope this works out for him. Mom would have been so proud. http://www.protoxrd.com/aboutproto.htm
  4. So last week I washed the bike a work. Fired it up and rode block down the street to fill up the tank. As I pulled up to the pump the idle got rough, dropped to about 600 and eventually died. i ended up pushing it to one of my employers other building. After 4 hours of trying to get it to run I gave up and left it for the night. Occasionally I would get it to fire, but it would never idle right nor would it idle over 300RPM. Next day, after work it fired up and idled. I could even twist the throttle and rev the engine. Shut it down, change the plugs. After changing the plugs, it idled smooth. The throttle was crisp. I went ahead and rode it the 70 miles home. It ran great! I did notice at idle it smelled rich though. Fast forward to today. I wander out to the shop to take the scoot for a ride. Hit the starter. It cranks for a few seconds then fires. idle was REALLY low. Let it idle for a couple of minutes and it dies. Now it won't start again. Anybody got any suggestions where to start? Thanks, Ed
  5. Hey Guys, I have a big question. My Venture all of a sudden quit wanting to start. If I put the choke on it doesn't start, if I give it a little gas it tries to start, and I had it running once and it didn't want to stay running. Does anybody know what could be wrong? I took the plugs out and cleaned and adjusted them. I'm going to put some new plugs in it tomorrow and try it. I've already rode it several times in the last couple of weeks and this all of a sudden happened. I just filled the tank up with gas recently.I don't think it's bad gas. Thanks guys

  7. I picked up my newly aquired 83 venture yesterday. I had bought it knowing it had some exhaust work to be done and having some front brake problems, but supposably the brake problems were fixed. I was a little nervous getting on for the ride home being this is the first time I had ridden a bike of this size. Decided to take the back roads to start out to get the feel for the weight and manuverability of the bike. To my surprise when I came to a stop sign there was almost no front brakes. Since there are rubber hoses that look pretty old on the bike I think I will start with replacing them to steel braided lines. Until these are changed, I think the bike will have to sit.
  8. I know for some of you this has been a long time coming, and it's way past due, but better late than never. So for all those 1stGen members who want to sound great as well as look great, here's your chance. Right now we're putting together a list. Details will be posted later. The cost will be $225 including shipping to your door in the US and $235 for Canada. The mufflers will need to be built, so the sooner we get them ordered, the better. It will take a while to get them thru production. Send me a PM if you'd like to hop aboard. Once we get 10 I'll start working on collecting the money and placing the order. The MAC's are being built to order, so it'll take a while before I can ship. The quicker we get 10...or more?? The sooner we can get the ball rolling. LIST CLOSED 1. Saddle_Bag.... Paid 2. 9. Hello Everyone, I'm in need of your assistance again. Here is my problem: when I wash the bike it is always hard to start,if I let it set a while it will start. If I drive in heavy rain the bike has stalled out. When I let it set a while it will start and run fine. I have taken the TCI unit out cleaned the connectors and opened the cover letting it dry out, also used diaelectric grease on the connector. I have replaced the spark plug wires thinking that they mey be the problem but to no avail. I'm leaving on Friday for Myrtle Beach and the forecast is for rain. HELP!
  10. I picked up an old 78 Honda CB400 TII Hawk that was in really good condition for a friend of mine that has never ridden before. After I got my VR he went out and got his MC lisence so he could ride too. There is no way I am gonna let a greenhorn ride my VR, so I've been keeping an eye out for a good first bike for him to get used to before getting a real bike. Anyhow, I got this CB400 from a classmate for free. He said it would still start but ran like crap. He had it for a lot of year and could never let it just go to the boneyard. Ya, it would start, but only would run on the 2nd cylinder. I pulled the plugs and the first thing I saw was splitfire plugs:bang head:. First thought was a hole burnt in the piston. Stuck my thumb over the plug hole and started it up. No compression! Got a flashlight out and turned the piston to TDC. The hole is about an inch or so big. I've seen way to many vehicles come into my shop that had some sort of severe problems due to some fancy type of sparkplugs. Now that I've made this short story really long, anybody know where to get old Honda parts at a reasonable price:confused24:?
  11. Now that the weather is nicer, I am finally starting the makeover of my black beast, havent decided what color to go back with.......but I will have time to decide while I tear all the plastic off and start repairing all the cracks and tabs. Hopefully it will be finished before Maint. dayt at Freebirds, if not the V Star will carry me there. Wont be as comfortable as the Venture but if will be a good ride. I will post pics as per rule #1...........If anybody as any helpful tips I am open for them. So here is the start............
  12. So..... it looks like the only "realy" US made touring bike is moving to Japan by 2009. (Yes, yes... I know ... Harley, Victory etc... Sorry , but look at the Keihin carbs and many other Delco, Bosh etc. parts I would hardly call those US made - perhaps US assembled would be more correct - and it shows by the trail of pars left on the road...) Wonder what that's going to do to the price.... Oh well, at least the quality will probably get better. I wonder if the design will change when they start to consider global, rather than just US sales. Smaller engine? Less plastic? Less comfort? Narrower profile able to handle European perpetual road-jams? Will it start looking like a bavarian donkey with a broken back (BMW) ?
  13. Is there a good thread on here to help understand/diagnose the leveling system on the first gen. I get nothing from mine, no lights, no noise, nothing. I suppose the place to start is, is it getting power? Thanks D

  15. After struggling through the "longest winter ever" we now have good enough weather to bring the bikes out from storage. There had to be at least 50 or more bikes travel down the highway past my place today, I also decided to begin my 2008 season. Uncovered my clean bike, installed the fully charged battery, wheeled it out of my garage and after 3 attempts to start, it fired up. Without any warning, gasoline started spraying out onto the ground from behind the leftside air breather. Unfortunately I didn't realize I had the gas leak soon enough to prevent major damage to the asphalt surface of the driveway, a lot of gas sprayed out. NOT IMPRESSED!!!!!! I took off the left side cowling to see where the gas was coming from. There is an open ended rubber tube that is not connected to the breather but is secured to the plastic housing. I cranked the engine once again and witnessed without view obstruction, this is the source of the gas leak. Of course this is Saturday late afternoon, the bike shop is closed til Monday and I am no mechanic, so I washed the bike, wheeled it back into the garage and did my best to clean up the fuel that was eating up my driveway. Can anyone explain why this happened??????? Thanks in advance!
  16. A friend of mine sent me this today. Its very easy to become complacent. As we start riding more, watch out for the other guy. http://www.zippyvideos.com/7103177407477156/nevertrustagreenlight/*denverchief
  17. I had tried to get as much riding as possible in the fall, being my first year with my '05. But I got caught by Mother Nature and I had 3 weeks of no riding before I tried to put her away for the winter. It would not start, I charged the battery and it DID start and I was able to put her away. BUT, the radio would not play. I did notice a small spark when attaching the wires to the negative terminal. I dunno?!? So as I am now able to break through the backyard glacier, and I was wondering were to begin and just what the heck to do. Fuses? and how do you get to the fuse in the barrel shaped plastic tube that sits on top of the battery? Which fuse is for the radio? After reading some other people battery woes, the radio seems to be the first thing that goes? right? So maybe it is a weak battery? Any help would be greatly appreciated. And ..... um..... pretend your explaining it to a total moron, (maybe then I'll get it). Thanks.
  18. Hi. I've bought a non running XVZ1200, 83 model, and have started rebuilding it. I bought a new battery/plugs etc to try and fire it up but it turns over way to slowly. When I press the start button the battery level just drops right down? I've also noticed the starter solenoid gets red hot when the engine's turning overhttp://www.yamahaventureclub.co.uk/forum//smileys/smiley24.gif I burned my fingers on the terminalshttp://www.yamahaventureclub.co.uk/forum//smileys/smiley35.gif, that's how hot it gets.
  19. Go out to start the bike at work yesterday. Hit the switch, turns over but doesn't start. Hit the switch again, engine turns and stops (kinda like the hot start issue sound), hit the switch again bike starts. Get on and notice that the odometer is actually on the odometer (I usually leave it on trip 1 and have left trip 2 unreset since I got the bike (to keep track of how many miles I've actually ridden it since getting it.) Both the tripometers are reset to zero. However, all of the radio stations I have set are still set as normal. It was 42 one the ride in and dipped to about 30 in the morning but was about 57 or so when I went to start it. Have no idea how old the battery is. It's a sealed, yamaha branded battery so I figure it's probably the second battery and is, roughly about 4 or 5 years old. It was low enough winter before last to not even turn the scoot over. Put it on the battery minder and it was good to go again and rode with it all last summer. Kept it on the minder every week or so this winter so no problem till yesterday. I'm thinking this is a sign that the battery is dying and the voltage dropped low enough to, have the hard start, reset the trip meters and put the odometer back showing. Any thoughts?
  20. My 84 VR is sick. Several months ago it took a full choke before it would start and then it progressed to were it would only start when it was warm. (set out in the the sun) Now it will rarely start without a spray or two of starter fluid. I have followed many of the suggestions on this site and have replaced the plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, new gas, etc. I also tuned the carbs. Once it is warmed up, it runs fine but getting it started is a major pain. If I don't have a charger on, it will crank until the battery runs out unless I give it a shot of starter fluid. Previously, after it was running and warmed up, you could shut if off and it would restart immediately. Yesterday, after I had rode it for a hour or so, I shut it off but had a heck of time getting it going again. It took several seconds of cranking it before it started. Any suggestions on what the problem might be or what to check next? Thanks.
  21. My riding season begins April 19th with a mood change. It's the first weekend after I paid the IRS.If the creek don't rise I'm going to put a few miles on mamamo's 99. Run a few tanks through it and make sure it's running ok before we start painting it in may. I think my test ride is about over(Mamamo is still waiting her turn). :rotf::rotf: The 84 needs some tlc before I consider a trip to the beach in june. Those front fork seals or whatever still have a major leak even after a rebuild and the battery is due replacement. I got a new front tire mounted up ready to install as well. The 89 just needs a little cleanup. Those #@#^ birds are trying to build nest in my scoot shed again and that darn cat has muddy tracks on the scoots. I need to roll the 86 outside where I got some elbow room and start parting it out in the evenings. I can throw a tarp over it out there. I think I will pull those plugs and clean them and start it up. The last thing I do will be part out the essentials for keeping it running. So when I get it secured on the center stand the plastic, floorboards, hitch, etc start coming off. Not sure how much help I can be but Yammer Dan is way over due for getting something running. We got to do something about that.My scoots have been neglected. Nothing has been started since January. We have been busy at the new property just not enough time.
  22. well spring is here in mn and i'm finally getting my bike together after fixing the tranny this winter. the motor's been sitting on my workbench mostly is pieces for a good part of the winter so I plan on putting clean oil in for the first start up, running it for 10-20 min the changing the oil and filter. I'm thinking about just puting regular 5w-30 in the first strat up since i have plenty of it around and it's alot cheaper than yama oil. anybody think that presents any problem's?
  23. I would like to infom anyone who is a member of a moose lodge and didnt know (like myself) that they have an organization within the moose called "Riders of the Moose ". After much research our lodge has decided to start a chapter of our own. It is an easy way to start a riding club with existing friends and to make new ones. They also do a pile of charity work for local organizations and Moose heart wich is a orphanage per say located in ill.You should check out the websites. google them "riders of the moose" and "mooseheart". We are actually planning to attend their blessing of the bikes at the end of may .
  24. Went to take the bike to work today and it wouldn't start,, battery seemed weak. This is the second time it has happend.. Bike is just a year old last week and completely stock. First time it had sat unused for a month, and when I went to start it the radio had been turned off so I was not 100% sure I had turned the key all the way off. I charged the battery and it was fine for a few weeks. On the 13th I did a 150 mile ride and put it back in the garage, hadn't had a chance to ride since (but that is only 11 days) and today it wouldn't start. The key was definitely off. I will get to it tomorrow and check the fluid level, connections and voltage, charge it, and check the voltage running, to make sure it is charging OK. Anything else to look for?
  25. After installing a Stebel air horn. My bike cranks w/o hitting the start button. Prior to adding the horn we had to have a "before" sound. Key was on and start was hit instead of horn and the chasis ground arked. Testing done so far: Start switch, Relay, Kick stand safety, clutch switch. HELP!!!!!! I have no idea where to go from here HELP
