  1. What is the diameter of the handle bars on my 86? I'm looking at aftermarket grips and not sure which ones to get. Suggestions are warmly welcomed Brian
  2. Thanks for all the tips. I had ordered the main gasket but not the middle gear cover gasket or the crush washer and did not realize to look for the wire issues. I would have torn into it and been dead in the water till I got what I needed. Earl helped me out and what I need should be here in a few days... till then I'll still be riding Moral of the story.... Post the question prior to placing the order Thanks again! Brian
  3. I need to replace the gasket on the left side crank case cover and I'm wonder what "special" considerations I need to be aware of. I've read and printed the service manual instructions and looked at a few pics on the site. After removing the multiple allen bolts that hold the cover on will it come off with the stator attached to the cover or do I have to remove the smaller cover first (with Yamaha emblem)? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Brian
  4. Me too... Sharp looking add on. Thanks for sharing!
  5. Prayers up for Bob and Becky... Get well soon!
  6. Are you trying to take it to zero psi because you installed Progressives? Just curious. B.
  7. From what I found on line it looks like all the lenses are the same from 83 to 86. I'm sure your method will be less expensive but if you're looking for a stock alternative.... http://m.yamaha-motor.com/PartsViewer.aspx#/Yamaha/XVZ12TK_-_1983/METER/XVZ12TK_(1983_MOTORCYCLE)/METER_(XVZ12TK_-_1983) http://www.powersportsplus.com/parts/detail/yamaha/YP-26H-8353G-00-00.html I have also seen a couple on ebay but I didn't have any luck searching by the Yamaha part #. Hope this helps. Brian
  8. Thanks for the idea Keemez... I might just look into that. To go with the "stock" placement I think I've found the spots based on the explanations and pics. Seems that the front hole is a bit larger than the bolt will be but I guess a lock washer and lock-tite should do the trick. Am I on the right track?
  9. So if a guy had an 86 with the connector mounted on the false tank cover... what kind of head set would he want to purchase?
  10. Sa-weet!!! Thanks guys, this is very helpful! I should be able to figure it out with the pics and the explanations... Now to convince my Sergeant that I need to leave early to work on my bike Thanks again! Brian
  11. I'm not sure where the original mounting position was/is because the front portion had come off. I'm thinking it's suppose to secure to the fuel pump mouting bolt but when I screwed it in it seemed to be rubbing on the drive shaft housing. I did "Google" it and it looks like I do have the original R/R... I marked the pic below with where I think it should mount. Is this what you were refering to regarding the two holes in the frame? Really appreciate the help!
  12. So I'm trying to re-mount my R/R that fell of the other day. (I would copy the link to my previous post and pics but I haven't figured out how to do that yet) The bracket that the exhaust hanger mounts to, as well as the R/R, is slightly bent now and I'm not sure if the forward mount for the R/R is correct. So my question(s) is... Does the front of the R/R mount to bolt that also secures the fuel pump and is the R/R suppose to touch the drive shaft housing at all, cuz mine is. I still need to straighten the exhaust hanger bracket to properly secure the rear portion of the R/R but it seems, based on the pics, that the R/R will still be in contact with the drive shaft housing, towards the front, and I'm assuming that moves as the rear suspension is "activated." Can someone confirm that proper mounting for the R/R on my 86 VR and possibly post a pic for my visual brain?
  13. Not sure what I like more... My "new to me 86" or being a member of this site. You guys, and gals, are first class!!!!!! Brian
  14. Will be praying for your mother and wisdom for the doc's.
  15. I'm about 90 minutes south but I think there are a couple members closer. If all else fails let me know and I'll see what I can do. Brian:322:
  16. So sad to hear about this difficult time for their family. Will being praying for God's peace to be with them.
  17. That's great information, thanks. Sure is nice to have so much expertise only a click away!
  18. Thanks MiCarl for all of the info! Regarding the wires... It's hard to tell from the pic but the discolorization that you see inside the connectors is actually dielectric grease and around the wires it was very oily from a ton of blow-by cause by a broken air box before I repaired it. When I reinstall I will make sure to crimp the females. I think I answered this one but to be sure Are the front and rear brake pads the same part/part #? Thanks again!
  19. After taking the long way home from work last night my brakes felt a little funny. While inspecting the rear brake pads, which I noticed are non-existent, I saw what I think is the R/R laying against the drive shaft housing and the frame. After pulling the left side panel and the pass. foot rest mounting bracket I disconnected the two wire bundles and tried to pull the R/R out. It was still partially attached by one bolt to the bracket that holds the rear exhaust hanger but only barely hanging on. It was not attached all to the front but the bolt was still there? When I first bought the bike a few weeks ago I noticed that the left exhaust/muffler was not even with the right side when looking at the bike from the rear. After comptimpating this for several hours I think I've determined the following.... at some point the R/R loosened and the front portion fell down by the drive shaft housing causing it to push against the frame when the rear suspension travels up and down. (note the broke fins and fin marks on the drive shaft) Which in turn pushed against the mounting bracket forcing it outward. (note the chipped paint and rust marks on the bracket) So my question(s) is.... #1. Is this the R/R #2. Will the couple of broken fins on the back be an issue #3. Can I/would you straighten that bracket to even up the mufflers #4 Can someone send or post of pic of the rear of their bike so I can see the alignment of the exhaust #4. What brake pads are recommended for my 86 VR As always, any and all comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated!
  20. I know I'm new here but is this what is refered to as a "darksider?"
  21. When we disconnected the land line I was worried that our cell phones would be ringing off the hook with solicitors and burn up all of our minutes. My wife found this web site and in the past two years I've only gotten a couple of calls. Guess it's working. http://www.donotcall.gov For those of you with smart phones another option is Google voice. It's a free phone # that works on VoIP and uses data rather that cellular service to make and receive calls. It is quite handy when you need to register for something, give out, etc. but you don't want to others to have your primary phone number. Perfect for club cards, salesmen... Did I mention it is FREE http://www.google.com/voice Happy calling!
  22. Bet that was scary for you to watch! Glad you're both ok.
  23. That is blue-tiful !!
  24. G&V, If I see any down this way I'll let you know!
  25. I read about some of the O ring issues. I think you make a good point, I should probably wait till I get the bike running again to try and pin point the source of the leak before I go replacing every hose. Who knows, maybe it was dribble from me taking the rad cap of to clean it. Thanks for grounding me while I was jumping to conclusions
