The directions in the Service Manual are pretty straight forward on the 1st Gens. and is available to download from here on the website in the Tech Section. You sync 1 and 2, then 3 and 4, next (here's where having 4 connections is nice) you use the third adjustment screw to match 1/2 to 3/4. When I did mine, using the Morgan Carbtune, once I matched the two sides together, the meter then showed some slight changes in the matching of 1 to 2 and 3 to 4. In just a few minutes I was able to move back and forth to the different sync screws and get all 4 cylinders matched. Dave

Don't forget to sync the carbs. When I purchased my '86 it was having a hard time staying running at idle so we took it over to the shop and they adjusted it. In reality they were playing with the carb sync screws because you don't need a screwdriver to adjust the idle. I wish I had known that at the time... but all is well now.

Good reminders to put safety first and keep yourself protected. Thanks Jack. Dave

I know a Chev salesman very well... total 2008 wages $20K. I don't know how he eats. Bankruptcy, IMHO, might be the best thing for GM. Get their costs in a more reasonable position and then their vehicles can sell for a reasonable price, along with parts and service. Dave

If you disconnect the power from the unit, does the time reset? If so, I would bet that the orange is for constant power for the unit to retain its memory and the red wire would then be connected to the switched power source so that the unit doesn't draw constant power. That said. Most manufacturers have instructions on their websites. Dave

There are a lot of us with the same question. I'm sure one of his families will let us know as soon as they can. Until then, prayers continued... Dave

Gary- What a great plan, thanks for the invitation. I'll be there. Dave

If the timing and weather will cooperate, I'll get more than just a couple of miles in the saddle but it sure has been nice on the short distances. Thanks again! Dave

I've used a free product before called SmithFix. After a virus file update in regular mode, you run it in Safe Mode and it's solved this type thing for me before. Dave:fingers-crossed-emo

Ponch- You don't have to have a decal (sticker). If you're in your car, you simply put the entrance receipt on your windshield and any ranger in the park can see that you have legally entered the park - NO TICKET. On your bike, you have the possibility of the receipt being stolen, so, they make a decal you can obtain for the same purpose - so a ranger in the park, won't issue a ticket for not having proof a valid entry. You should be able to get a decal at any station you can purchase the pass at. You need your pass, ID and your registration. All three documents need to show your name. When I spoke to the USGS yesterday they said it is a decal approx. 2 1/4" square and the lady suggested we put it on one of the mirrors. She also said that it would wash off in a rain storm. I think I'm going to attach it to a plate near the license plate. A ranger would have to go look at the plate to issue a ticket, so why not have it right there for him/her to see. Dave

I really like to idea of the inspection sticker plate. Does anyone out there have one of the decals? Can you post a picture of it? The park services says it can go on your mirror. I would rather not have something that would interfere with my vision (and my mirrors are bigger than Jan's). Dave

We have had a Nat'l Park Pass over the years but have always been in a car together when visiting any of the parks. As we are each planning on riding our own bike to the Roundup in Cody this September, I wondered how it would work. I talked to the Park Service and they said that the pass would cover us both even though we are each on a separate bike and suggested that we also get decals for the bikes so that we have something on the bike showing we are in the park legally. I've never been a fan of putting decals on my vehicles, so the question is......is there a safe way to display the decal on the bike without have to worry about it being stolen or being able to remove it once it expires? I'd love to hear your ideas and innovative ways you've addressed this issue. Dave

Matt- The radios on the 1 gen have a noise sensor on them. When the ambient noise level reaches a certain level the radio volume increases automatically to compensate. The sensitivity of this can be adjusted by the slider on the outside of the ON/Off/Volume knob. Dave

With the wonderful people associated with this site, it doesn't take long to find acceptance. While only here a short time, we feel the loss of Paul. Our prayers and simpathy go out to all of his family and friends during this time of loss. May he enjoy the ride he never had here in the life to come. Dave

For the cost of distilled water and time on a charger, IMHO it worth a try. Worst case scenario, you have to buy a new battery and you've lost a couple of bucks and a few hours. I say, go for it!!

Don- If you think this is too political or religious in nature. Please delete it. Dave I received an email from my sister in IL. this morning about the NBC poll. The subject matter is whether the phase "In God We Trust" should remain on US currency. I encourage all to vote at: www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10103521/ Dave

That was one of the first things she said, was that she needed to go on some longer rides so she would be ready to ride to Cody!

After looking at bikes for 8 months and with the warm weather threatening to come, it was time to replace Jan's bike. We looked at Kawasaki Vulcans, Yamaha V-Stars, Suzuki Boulevards, Honda Shadows. Even Bob Myer was helping us in the search. We looked for both new and used but Jan never found the bike she liked until.... On January 28th, we took our son to the MTC to start his mission. After we had said our good-bye's, Jan wasn't in the mood to just go home so I suggested that we stop in at the Lindon Harley-Davidson dealership. The dealership was built using much of it materials from the old Geneva Steel plant that was demolished across the street from their new facility. It is ready pretty neat looking to see all of the old wood, trusses and sheet metal and how it was incorporated in to the new building. While we were there we also looked at a number of the bikes and soon she came to the Sportster. Lance, whom we were chatting with as we looked, suggested that she sit on one (not what you normally want to do in a skirt). That was it! She loved the weight, height and especially and narrow profile of the engine and fuel tank. So, last Saturday, we went back to Timpanogos Harley and purchased a gently used 2008 Harley Sportster Custom. Can you see the smile in the pics? http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/IMG_0024.jpg The bike is 1200 cc, V-Twin, fuel injected, belt driven. It also has a custom paint color that changes depending on the light, windscreen and sissy bar (on order). We plan on adding a JMCB-2300 CB radio so that we can communicate on trips. She says that she doubts she be on the back of my bike much any more. When we left the dealership, we got on the freeway to go home, Jan on the bike and me in the car. After we got on the on ramp, I looked up to see tail lights at the top of the ramp and me at the bottom. I don't think she'll have any problems keeping up. http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/IMG_0022-1.jpg

Harold/ Jerry - I should have been more specific. The bike side pigtail has the insulated hot and exposed ground, I guess to reduce the chance of accidental grounding. The transformer side would be just the opposite but the chance of grounding is fairly small. Thanks for helping with the clarification!! Dave:missingtooth:

I tested mine a while back and the protected side is + because if the unprotected side (-) comes in contact with a ground it won't short out. Dave

How many will buy carb diaphragms
utadventure replied to Freebird's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
For those less informed, ok for me. Is it pretty much expected that my 86 will eventually need the diaphrams replaced? Are you smart to replace all four once one is found to be damaged (and keep the rest as back ups)? What is a normal price for a diaphram? Dave- 57 replies
