  1. Coming up on 16000 miles on my 06 RSV and the service manual says to repack the Rear Arm Pivot Bearing at 16000 miles. Maybe I'm missing it in the manual but I can't find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  2. Anybody know how to get the Drag Specialties drivers backrest pivot covers off? The backrest is from a 94 Goldwing and is about 3" to tall. I need to get these covers off so I can shorten it and hide the welds under the cover when I'm done. There's an allen head bolt on the back but all it does is just spin. I'm thinking maybe the plastic ring that says WINGLEADER comes off and there maybe some screws under that. Anybody ever try to take off those covers?
  3. Ok.....I'm about finished piecing together a Markland backrest I've been working on. The pivots were my problem and I got it worked out to what I show in the pics. My question is did the Markland use a knob and stud as a tightening device you could do by hand or was it just a bolt to hold the pivot together like I have done. Can anybody provide a pic or two of the pivot? I used a threaded spacer bushing with nylon washers on either side of the pivot disk on the support arms and metal washer that fits over the smaller side of the bushing to compress the nylons a bit. No rattle, smooth tilt action, but is it the way it should be? Trying to get it right. Mike
  4. Ok. I have had a set of these since I bought the bike a couple of years ago. The PO's son had them in a box of extra stuff and said his dad had had them on the bike but he had taken them off years ago. They are in nice shape but for the life of me I could not see any possible way that they would bolt on to the bike. So they stayed in the box. My daughter has asked me several times to put them on for her. Now I ran across an eBay auction that had a set just like mine, except they had a whole different bracket assembly below the pivot. I hoped they would go cheap so I could part them out for what I needed but you know how that goes. Yeah right. These are pics from the arm rests from the auction. I'm going to ask if ANYBODY has a set of old brackets something like these laying around, gathering dust and just generally in the way that they would like to make a deal on. Just checking. Nosing around. I know some of you guys are still suffering from PMS and dieing for something to do........like dig in your old parts stash. I just need the brackets below the pivot. Let me know. Mike
  5. So after putting the 89 VR on the center stand and looking under, I noticed some play in the pivot area. I refer to the following parts diagram from South Seattle sports plaza online at http://www.yamahasportsplaza.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/2/Yamaha.aspx (sorry guys, the link didn't work completely. You have to put in motorcycle, 1989, xvz1300w venture, and then select swing arm) After removing shaft1, I found the items marked #33 (bushing) to be badly worn. I did remove the nut from shaft2 but was unable to remove it to see if there is any play on the shock area...any ideas how to get that shaft out? Do I have to punch it out? My biggest worry is getting to Bolt #29 with attached self locking nut #31. I know there are more bushings in that area but be d****d it I can get them loose. Do I have to remove the exhaust collector unit? It looks like it would be much easier to access the bolt and nut if I did so...but then I looked up how to remove the exhaust collector and it seems more complicated than I need right now. Is there a special tool or method some of you have used to access this area? Since I have to travel this weekend and parts must be ordered, I have decided to put the worn bushing back in for now and ride conservatively on this short trip. That's not hard to do in "Flatland" Saskatchewan, Canada. Any help and opinions greatly appreciated folks. Thanks.
  6. Besides making sure you LocTite the shift lever bolt, you should make sure you have properly lubed the pivot. I noticed the shifter seems considerably more sloppy on my 05 with 40,000 miles than my 07 with 13,000. When I pulled the shifter off, I noticed wear on the pivot just to the rear of top center. It was also pretty dry. There is a grease groove in the middle of the pivot, and my 07 did show it had once been packed. I bet the shifter on the 05 wouldn't be near as sloppy had I checked this long ago. Note that this IS listed on the periodic maintenance chart in the Owner's manual! My bad for not having properly checked it sooner. The shop used to just use a spray lube like a thin white grease on this point as well as the kick stand and brake peddle, so maybe I'll get them to fix it under warranty. Goose
