  1. Hi riders! My 03 2nd gen is giving me trouble. The front end is a mess. It feels sloppy and unsettling all the time. In a lean, the front end is wobbly. I put it on a lift, grabbed the front wheel, don't feel any head bearing clicking. I don't get any bounce back when I send the bars to one side or the other. The tire is perfect, no cupping, the wheel is rotating as it should be. Back on the ground, and facing down hill, I let it roll a bit, hit the front brake and I can feel a click. I don't feel the forks bounce unusually. I have a new Works rear shock which is fine. I've got 21k on it. Never did either the bearings of fork work. Anyone want to come to long island and help replace it all ? Any ideas.
  2. Needed to have valve adjustment on my 83 venture. Ponch is going to be kind enough to come down with equipment and supervise. Will start about 9 AM on Saturday 8-27-11. My address is : Jerry Van Avery 1255 CR 878B Sweeny Texas, 77480 Others are welcome to come buy watch/ learn and do other maintenece on they're bikes. Will plan to have Sloppy Joes for lunch and If you want to cool off the pool will be available. Might be able to have some Ice cream for desert. Let me know if you plan on coming to the country and if there is specific maintenance you need or plan to tackle. I do have motorcycle jack but not a stand.
  3. 2005 ford escape 4 wheel drive I want to take the calipers off the front...2 bolts ....should be pretty straight forward BUT..... 3/4" is sloppy, 11/16 to tight 19 mm is sloppy, 17 mm to tight I have 2 sets of metric and 2 sets of standard tools and neither have anything in between. Am I missing something?
  4. Tonight I decided to pull off my clutch lever to clean out the junk in there.. I'd been having some odd noises from the lever and it felt kind of odd from time to time.. So apart it went tonight.. and wow, what a frikken mess in there! Take off the nut, turn out the pivot bolt, and pull the lever off making sure to catch the brass holder.. everything was dark gunk mess in there.. no wonder it was feeling weird. A good cleaning and I discover the dust boot is torn to heck, exposing the push rod (plunger) to the elements.. Hmm wondering how munged up it might be inside of all there? I got everything re-assembled and lubed it up with Moly for now as I can't figure out what's best to lube it all up with properly. The one thing I do notice now is though the lever travels sooo much easier, it's also a lot more sloppy than before. I thought I might have dropped a sleeve from the pivot pin but no.. its simply just sloppy fitting now that all the junk it removed. I did notice that the brass holder is deformed and worn, and that the dust boot is torn. I'll go down to the shop and order each a new one.. however, how hard is it to install that boot? Considering the mess that I found, and the amount of slop in the lever play now, might it be worth my while to have the whole thing cleaned out and rebuilt with new seals? The book says to replace the piston seals every 2 years? I ride the bike a lot and in all kinds of weather.. the fluid tends to appear old prematurely, I wonder now if this is where some contamination might be coming in.. ? Thoughts, ideas or comments appreciated..
  5. Besides making sure you LocTite the shift lever bolt, you should make sure you have properly lubed the pivot. I noticed the shifter seems considerably more sloppy on my 05 with 40,000 miles than my 07 with 13,000. When I pulled the shifter off, I noticed wear on the pivot just to the rear of top center. It was also pretty dry. There is a grease groove in the middle of the pivot, and my 07 did show it had once been packed. I bet the shifter on the 05 wouldn't be near as sloppy had I checked this long ago. Note that this IS listed on the periodic maintenance chart in the Owner's manual! My bad for not having properly checked it sooner. The shop used to just use a spray lube like a thin white grease on this point as well as the kick stand and brake peddle, so maybe I'll get them to fix it under warranty. Goose
