  1. Well, my influence (for good or bad) has rubbed off on my eldest son, Curtiss. He is on spring break from college this week and leaving today to go riding/camping. Curt is taking my 2008 KLR650 which is a reliable machine loaded down with everything he needs. This bike is really a great packmule. He will head out about noon today and is aiming towards Mammoth Cave Nat'l Park. He wants to camp, hike, and just sit around and read (going to school to be a literature professor). I envy him and want to go too. His route today will take him thru central Illinois (Rockford to Normal) and then over into Indiana. Once he gets into Indiana, I expect he will get off the interstate slab. Will likely stay tonight in the Hoosier Nat'l Forest near French Lick. Tomorrow will see him down to Mammoth Cave. I will post a picture of the loaded bike and son once he is ready to go. If he runs into trouble, I may need to rely on the graciousness and support of this family until I can get down to him. While he is 22, he is still my little boy (sure - 6'4" little boy) and I want to protect him the best I can (without him knowing it). I will keep you all up to date. I love my son and am very excited for him to make this trip alone. It will be a great experience for him. Wish him luck. RR
  2. Glacier Nat'l Park. Besure this on your bucket list. Glacier's pristine forests, alpine meadows, rugged mountains, and spectacular lakes. With over 700 miles of trails, Glacier is a hiker's paradise for adventurous visitors seeking wilderness and solitude. http://www.photoshow.com/watch/KM2kB7Vj Phill
  3. In 1992 Loraine & I rode to Kalispel MT. For V-daze. We took a lot of scenic routes getting there. We would like to share this trip with you. The first video is our trip over the Rocky Nat'l Park. http://www.photoshow.com/watch/Si7Rc8Cv?source=em_ps_show_owner phill
  4. Well we did it again. The harvest this year was early and bountiful. Which left us with a window to get the heck out of here. So on October 7th we packed up the Venture and headed southwest again. The itinerary was to basically see Mesa Verda Nat'l Park , Bryce & Zion Canyons Nat'l Parks. We rode Interstate until we came to Highway 50 in Missouri past St. Louis. From there it was nothing but two lane blacktop. We made stops at Great Sand Dunes Nat'l Mon., The Strater Hotel at Durango, Colorado {had to have a drink at the Diamond Belle saloon} cool place felt like the Earps could walk in anytime, Natural Bridges Nat'l Mon., Capital Reef Nat'l Park, Bryce Canyon Nat'l Park, Zion Nat'l Park, Standin on the corner at Winslow Arizona, Valley of Fires Nat'l Rec Area, Roswell, New Mexico from there to Amarillo, Texas to I-40 then interstates back home. The weather was beautiful. In the mornings it was alittle cool but by 9:00 or 10:00 it warmed up fine. Before the trip I had bought the wife a Tourmaster heated coat and myself a Tourmaster heated vest. Her coats control unit failed after the second use of it so I gave her mine which she used off and on for the rest of the trip. I never needed my vest anyway. Since I have been home I have recieved another control unit for the failed one plus bought another one for a spare. I have heard that the aspen trees are beautiful in the fall. Let me tell you that this fact is true. They were a very bright gold. This made for some breathtaking visas with the green and gold against the mountainsides. We only rode in the rain once and that wasn't a hard rain. It was when we were making the first ascent into the Rockies in Colorado. The rain stopped after we were through the pass. The wife took 724 pictures. I will only post a few as pictures do not do the beauty and splendor of the west justice. The Venture ran like a Swiss watch. Burned up roughly over $300.00 of gas and a 1/2 qt of oil. Total miles 4577 in 15 days but right now it just seems like a dream.
  5. We have had a Nat'l Park Pass over the years but have always been in a car together when visiting any of the parks. As we are each planning on riding our own bike to the Roundup in Cody this September, I wondered how it would work. I talked to the Park Service and they said that the pass would cover us both even though we are each on a separate bike and suggested that we also get decals for the bikes so that we have something on the bike showing we are in the park legally. I've never been a fan of putting decals on my vehicles, so the question is......is there a safe way to display the decal on the bike without have to worry about it being stolen or being able to remove it once it expires? I'd love to hear your ideas and innovative ways you've addressed this issue. Dave
  6. We are taking off today on an epic journey to Arcadia Nat'l Park. We will cross into Canada in Sarnia, travel up the St Lawrence Seaway, take the ferry to the US in Kingston, ride the Annarrondaks, the Green Mtns, the White Mtns (incl. Mt. Washington), and head across Maine to Bar Harbor, ME. Just me, a buddy, and my Dad. 9 days, 3600 miles. If ya see Big Red riding with a couple of Beemers, wave. RR
