  1. I'm all for installing something that is better but the stock radio does work well and where would you put the aftermarket radio and make it looked like it was part of the bike and not some gadget that was just hung on there? As far as mp3 goes, thats an easy addition to the stock system.
  2. I like the factory radio because it fits, looks like it belongs there, and it works pretty well. If you need to replace something, all of the radio components can be had on Ebay for just a few dollars.
  3. WOW!!! I sure feel like an idiot now. My bags are mostly empty!
  4. Chrislemon, This is what I have picked up from this thread. You may have been trying to bleed the rear brakes by filling the the front brake master cylinder. The front brake master cylinder only works on the front right caliber. This system is probably good and why the front brakes appear to work. As mentioned, the rear brake/front left brake master cylinder is down on the right side behind a panel. I had the same problem on an 89 that I picked up. The problem was the bleeder that BongoBob mentioned. It mounted right in front of the false tank cover. It is actually very easy to see. Its the high point for the rear brake and front left brake and air collects there.
  5. I left the existing resistor in. Added a 2.2K resistor in series. More resistance here is a safe thing and it was easy enough to remove the original resistor if I still had a battery warning on the display. No need to stress the CMU. It works great with both resistors.
  6. Thats about the only thing I have ever had Seafoam do for me! I know that its considered the miracle cure but I'm still waiting for that divine intervention
  7. Smart move. As much as I love the year, it just wasn't worth that much to most people.
  8. Kevin, The tool kit from my 89 contains 6 sockets 19, 17, 14, 12, 10, 8 Ray
  9. I was out on the blue bike yesterday but not that far south. Pretty much in the Sodus/Lyons area. I do like that area down there. Time for a day trip!
  10. I think that a lot of members are missing the point. This has nothing to do with whether or not you should wear a helmet. It has everything to do with whether or not you have the choice to wear the helmet. The helmet law wasn't established because your local government cares about whether or not you crash and die. The helmet law was created because your insurance company was afraid that you would crash and die or worse yet, crash and require long term medical treatment. So when I read the headline about repealing the law, I wondered how Michigan got that past the insurance companies. Read the article and it becomes clear. The additional insurance coverage was the buy off. I wonder how the authorities will confirm that a helmet-less rider has the additional insurance.
  11. Assuming that you are running XP, go to control panel, go on Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options, click the item 2nd down in the list which says change the format of numbers...., click the time tab, go to time format and set it as h:mm:ss tt, the big H is 24 hr the small h is 12 click ok, and ok again. thats should do it for u. The method is slightly different in XP Home Edition. In Control Panel, go straight to Regional and Language Options Then click Customize next to the displayed language. Select the time tab and alter the format as above, i.e. HH for 24 hour, hh for 12 hour.
  12. I thought that all private sales were "as is" unless a warranty was specifically written.
  13. Its a 2nd Gen thing?
  14. I have this same question. I have done a lot of reading about the cable but it still isn't quite clear to me as to exactly what it does. I admit to not being the sharpest knife in the the drawer. I sent Buddy a message asking but never got a response. I figured it was a dumb question. Ray
  15. I am seeing numbers from 3ft/pd to 44ft/pd. With a range like that a drift pin and hammer will work as well as anything else! What is the right number?
  16. I cant believe that I got caught by that!!! I'm man enough to admit it! It wasnt even my wife's. It was mine! Thanks guys!
  17. The radio and CB in my 86 work. Its just that they aren't very loud. I would say that max volume gives about 50% output. My 89 easily blows it away in volume. Connections are good at the radio and amp. Any thoughts?
  18. That is EXACTLY what mine did and like you I was looking back at the compressor. Members here pointed me toward the controller board connections. Some of the solder joints on the pins were bad enough that you could see a ring around the pin. I just redid all of the connector pins. That was it. Problem solved. BTW, mine did eventually post a code when I started poking around the board. Ray
  19. I am not one to disagree with Dan. He has more motorcycles at one time than I have had in my life! I can tell you that I did not mod my 4 brush starter and it works great. You also do not read anything about the 4 brush starter failing.
  20. PS - I just synced the carbs today. They werent too far off. I also just got a laundry list of things to check from Earl. Thanks Earl!
  21. I have looked and looked and I cant find this screw. I just picked up an 89 and it runs well enough but I swear that it has a lean idle. The previous owner told me that his Yamaha dealer rebuilt the carbs but I don't know what they did or didn't do. I think that they left it too lean. It requires full choke when cold and takes at least 2-3 times as long as my 86 to come off of choke. Also when pulling out from a stop, it requires more throttle and lags a small bit until it gets going. And this is after it is warmed up. Accelerating while moving is laggy for the first 15% of the throttle. I read in a thread that three turns out on the idle screw is a good place to be. Is this a good method or should I just drive the bike to PA to see Earl?
  22. I had the same problem on my 86. If you look around you will see many replies that will tell you to check the battery, upgrade the cables, clean the terminals and engine ground and even do a ground repair to the starter. All of those things are good things to do. But the ultimate fix for my bike was to upgrade to a GenII or later starter. Its a 4 brush starter versus the 2 brush starter that you have now. There are a number of threads here that talk about it. They can be had on Ebay for $50 -$129. Its not a fun project but it isn't too bad and it absolutely solved my slow starting issue.
  23. Many thanks to Earl (Skydoc_17) for the inspiration. I had the mirror stem and just bought the cell phone mount. I like how the phone enters car mode when inserted in to the dock for simple operation. I didn't even know that this mode existed. Ill probably clean it up a little more and shoot the back side with a little black paint.
