RSTD not running.. Please help!
RedRider replied to Blooz's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
There is. Go buy beer and cigars for when Goose comes over. Actually, go ahead and drain the tank. Easy to do. Turn the petcock to off, slide the clamp off the fuel line attached to the petcock. Put a length of 3/8" (IIRC) fuel line and run it to a gas can. Turn the petcock to reserve and let it completely drain out. Put a whole can of Seafoam and a couple of gallons of fresh non-alcohol (if you can find it) gas in. Next, get a length of 1/4" gas line. If you look at the bottom of each carb bowl, there is a nipple. Put the 1/4" line on one and loosen the screw at the bottom side of the bowl that is inline with the nipple. You will see it. This will drain the bowl. Retighten the drain screw after draining (Not too tight, just snug will do it). Do this for each carb bowl (there are 4). Next, turn on the key and listen for the fuel pump. It should run for 5 to 10 seconds, maybe a little longer since it has to full all 4 bowls. The pump should slow down and then stop when everything is full. Let it sit overnight. Now, try to start it. If it goes, it will smell a little funny. Seafoam will do that. Not a bad smell, just different than regular exhaust. Once it is running, you will want to replace the fuel filter (may want to do that to begin with). It is a royal PITA to get to. Under the seat, behind the clutch side panel, behind the battery box. I think Yamaha uses Pakistani kids that have hands too small to make oriental rugs to get in there. If that doesn't do it, wait for the great Goose to perform his magic. RR -
At 50 below, hell freezes over. Vikings win the Super bowl. Fixed the last line. RR

bike feels wiggly... need help
RedRider replied to dozer520's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
+1 on double checking the fork brace. Any misalignment in a fork brace will cause problems. As a test, take it off and see how it does. While it won't be as stable in turns without the brace, it should handle just fine on the straights. At least this will tell you where to look. RR -
DogBones on engine????

You will also note in M61A1MECH's link, it shows the correct torque spec. 46 ftlb (64 Nm). And Blue Loctite. RR -
RSTD 2005 with 107,000 miles???
RedRider replied to RSTDinFL's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I wouldn't worry about the engine/transmission at 107k. Items that may need updated - front springs, fork seals, brake lines, valve shims, test for neck bearings. And of course, the standard maintenance items. If they are going to put a tire on, make sure it is a Dunlop E3, Avon Cobra, Michelin Commander (II?). Don't settle for a D404 (will last My impression is this price is a little high. Since they have done nothing to it other than give it a bath, it should be priced as a private party seller vs a dealer. Good luck. RR -
Of course you are welcome here. VR includes a complete section on the TD. Most of the bike is the same as the Venture. Welcome. RR

To change the clutch spring is about a 15 minute job - the first time. Unless you have been slipping a lot and burning up the discs, likely a spring is all that is needed. Put it on the side stand, take off the cover, remove the pressure plate, change out spring, replace pressure plate USING AN INCH-LB TORQUE WRENCH. Button up and ride. RR

Curt Gran has put together an Iron Butt SaddleSore 1000 ride page for the MLR. Since this was started as a gathering of long distance riders, it just seems right. http://moonshine-run.com/Moonshine/mlrss1k.asp RR

Reserve Tank Question
RedRider replied to cabreco's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
As a test, I rode mine until empty. Was carrying a 1 Gallon gas can on the back to get me to a station. I got 211 miles (this is on a 2nd gen) from full (neck ventilated) to walk. Now, anytime I go anywhere far away, usually have the 5 gallon aux tank mounted. The tank will run down slower than my bladder will fill. Haven't had a problem since. RR -
Jeff, Good luck in rehab. Your shiny Venture is anxiously awaiting your recovery. RR

Two bikes I can afford. Two wives? No way. There is enough estrogen in this household the way it is. RR
-
Ummm, 2 bikes? Venture for highway miles, something more nimble for around town. For the second bike you can look for something smaller like a WeeStrom or a Tiger since you won't need it for extended highway duty. Just be careful, once you have more than one, they tend to breed. I picked up a KLR for around town and short back road / gravel road travel. Keep the Venture for longer distances. They get along well. Bikes aren't like wives. You can have 2 and they don't mind. RR

I had my 2000 to about 105 (GPS speedometer) running thru New Mexico on Interstate 40. Was just following some semi trucks. Decided I didn't like the added pucker factor while riding and backed off to about 85. The 2nd Gen is really sweet at that speed. RR

Depends what you want to do with it. If you only want to pipe the directions and/or XM/MP3 to the helmet, you just need a Y cable. If you want to integrate your phone via bluetooth, you will need the BuddyRich cable. The BR cable allows the microphone from your headset to connect back into the Zumo. Either way - please post pictures once installed. RR

'83 Brake system work - Milky Fluid?
RedRider replied to alvald83's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The bike is probably older than the mechanic. RR -
I would really like to get to this. Going to be riding just to the east of you that weekend (up thru Calgary to Edmonton). Current schedule would force me to ride 2400 miles in a little over two days if I stopped by Nelson. Unless I can figure a way to kick out a day or two early...... It would give me the opportunity to pick up skzoid's camper trailer though. We will see. RR

Faster than you want to go on one of these old washing machines (or even on one of the new washing machines). RR

Stator problem? Maybe?
RedRider replied to Dave77459's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
You will find this gauge is just an approximation of the voltage. It gives you a relative value depending on where it is wired. (I have the same meter on mine.) What is happening when you are riding in the cold is: All lights are on. Electric jacket liner is on. Carb heaters are on. (this is a big one) You are taxing the current capacity of the anemic stator when this combination is on. As long as you don't see the gauge drop over time, you are fine. However, you are close to pulling more juice than the stator is capable of producing. There are a couple of things you can do. Change your headlight to HID. Change your driving lights to HID. Add a switch for your driving lights to turn them off when riding in the cold. Upgrade to a high output stator. Change all the incandescent bulbs to LED (running lights, brake lights, etc. - turn signals don't help since you need to add resistors to the circuit for them to work properly). Other than that, your bike is working like it is supposed to. You will need to be careful when you add heated gloves. I had the same issue when adding all the heated gear. Changed to HID everything and the charging issue went away. Hope this helps. RR -

Former Fond du Lac police chief Tony Barthuly accidentally shot himself in the hand Wednesday night while cleaning a handgun. The accidental discharge happened at about 8:30 p.m., said Capt. Steve Klein. Police were called to St. Agnes Hospital for a report of a 54-year-old man who shot himself. Barthuly was later transported to Appleton Medical Center for further treatment. He was listed in good condition on Thursday. Barthuly currently serves as director of the Training and Standards Bureau at the Wisconsin Department of Justice. Any accidental discharge of a weapon needs to be investigated, said Klein. Due to Barthuly's ties to the Fond du Lac Police Department, the Sheboygan Police Department will handle the investigation. Additional information will be released upon completion of the investigation, said Klein. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=659672 RR
