Reserve Tank Question
RedRider replied to cabreco's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
As a test, I rode mine until empty. Was carrying a 1 Gallon gas can on the back to get me to a station. I got 211 miles (this is on a 2nd gen) from full (neck ventilated) to walk. Now, anytime I go anywhere far away, usually have the 5 gallon aux tank mounted. The tank will run down slower than my bladder will fill. Haven't had a problem since. RR -
Jeff, Good luck in rehab. Your shiny Venture is anxiously awaiting your recovery. RR

Two bikes I can afford. Two wives? No way. There is enough estrogen in this household the way it is. RR
-
Ummm, 2 bikes? Venture for highway miles, something more nimble for around town. For the second bike you can look for something smaller like a WeeStrom or a Tiger since you won't need it for extended highway duty. Just be careful, once you have more than one, they tend to breed. I picked up a KLR for around town and short back road / gravel road travel. Keep the Venture for longer distances. They get along well. Bikes aren't like wives. You can have 2 and they don't mind. RR

I had my 2000 to about 105 (GPS speedometer) running thru New Mexico on Interstate 40. Was just following some semi trucks. Decided I didn't like the added pucker factor while riding and backed off to about 85. The 2nd Gen is really sweet at that speed. RR

Depends what you want to do with it. If you only want to pipe the directions and/or XM/MP3 to the helmet, you just need a Y cable. If you want to integrate your phone via bluetooth, you will need the BuddyRich cable. The BR cable allows the microphone from your headset to connect back into the Zumo. Either way - please post pictures once installed. RR

'83 Brake system work - Milky Fluid?
RedRider replied to alvald83's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The bike is probably older than the mechanic. RR -
I would really like to get to this. Going to be riding just to the east of you that weekend (up thru Calgary to Edmonton). Current schedule would force me to ride 2400 miles in a little over two days if I stopped by Nelson. Unless I can figure a way to kick out a day or two early...... It would give me the opportunity to pick up skzoid's camper trailer though. We will see. RR

Faster than you want to go on one of these old washing machines (or even on one of the new washing machines). RR

Stator problem? Maybe?
RedRider replied to Dave77459's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
You will find this gauge is just an approximation of the voltage. It gives you a relative value depending on where it is wired. (I have the same meter on mine.) What is happening when you are riding in the cold is: All lights are on. Electric jacket liner is on. Carb heaters are on. (this is a big one) You are taxing the current capacity of the anemic stator when this combination is on. As long as you don't see the gauge drop over time, you are fine. However, you are close to pulling more juice than the stator is capable of producing. There are a couple of things you can do. Change your headlight to HID. Change your driving lights to HID. Add a switch for your driving lights to turn them off when riding in the cold. Upgrade to a high output stator. Change all the incandescent bulbs to LED (running lights, brake lights, etc. - turn signals don't help since you need to add resistors to the circuit for them to work properly). Other than that, your bike is working like it is supposed to. You will need to be careful when you add heated gloves. I had the same issue when adding all the heated gear. Changed to HID everything and the charging issue went away. Hope this helps. RR -

Former Fond du Lac police chief Tony Barthuly accidentally shot himself in the hand Wednesday night while cleaning a handgun. The accidental discharge happened at about 8:30 p.m., said Capt. Steve Klein. Police were called to St. Agnes Hospital for a report of a 54-year-old man who shot himself. Barthuly was later transported to Appleton Medical Center for further treatment. He was listed in good condition on Thursday. Barthuly currently serves as director of the Training and Standards Bureau at the Wisconsin Department of Justice. Any accidental discharge of a weapon needs to be investigated, said Klein. Due to Barthuly's ties to the Fond du Lac Police Department, the Sheboygan Police Department will handle the investigation. Additional information will be released upon completion of the investigation, said Klein. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=659672 RR

Yet Another Tire Question
RedRider replied to leo3wheel's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Put the new tire on and keep the old one around. When the new tire wears out, put the older tire back on and run it until the tread is uncomfortably low. Win/Win. RR -
bike wil not start
RedRider replied to icemonster's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
FYI - If you are jumping the bike from a car/truck, make sure the car/truck is not running at the time. The amperage put out by the car/truck alternator is substantially higher than most motorcycles can handle. RR -
I intend to at least put them in the freezer overnight. Not sure where to get dry ice around here anymore. Good idea though. RR

I was also going to use the long threaded rod and come washers to press the cups back into the neck. What time is a good time to call? RR

Company vehicle that covers gas for me. Now, if you asked what I spend on parts/farkles for the bikes....... I will never write that down in case SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed) sees it. RR

There certainly was no trick. Pure brute force with the Dremel. In the service manual it shows a couple of recesses supposedly allowing access to the rear rib. However, I didn't have a drift that was skinny enough to get on it. Ruffy, would you please post a picture of the drift you used? Preferably next to a ruler or pencil for scale. Also, where did you get it? RR
-
Ruffy, I'll give you a call when I get ready to reinstall the bearings. They are still on order from the dealer (just ordered them yesterday) and my forks are being done. Likely won't be until this weekend that I get around to installing them. That said, if you will be around this evening, I may give you a call to discuss. Yes, and I tried the brand new drift at the two recess points. Either my drift was too big or the recess cutouts were too small. Could not get purchase enough to hit it. Before I reinstall the bearing I may Dremel out the recesses a bit to allow another bearing change at 200k miles. RR
-
Well, I don't have a welder, but I do have a Dremel with an abrasive cutting wheel. That finally did it. Have filled the overshoot slots with JB Weld and will smooth them out before reinstalling the new bearing. Only worried about the slot where the seal rides. It won't make any difference behind the bearing. The ice didn't loosen it enough to fall out. Didn't think it would, but it was worth a try. Also heated the outside with a hair dryer while the ice was on the inside race. No go. Dremel to the rescue. RR
-
I was able to get the top one out with a drift. There is enough of the rear rib showing to get the drift on it. With the bottom one, not so much. I have a bag of ice (with liberal application of salt) on the ID of the lower bearing now. Will eat some supper and then go out and see if I can get it loose. RR

Passed 100k miles last year. It was time to do the fork spring. Probably could survive with the current steering head bearings, but they were a little notchy and since I was already in there..... RR
-
While taking off my forks to get Progressive springs installed, I checked the bearings and found the lower cup showing wear/damage lines. Since I could feel the line with my fingernail, I believe it is time to replace these bearings (probably only the lower needs replaced, but I am replacing both while in there). I took the lower tree with the lower bearing cone (inner race) to the dealer along with my forks. They are doing the spring replacement since I do not have the proper tools to remove and install the seals. They are going to remove the bottom bearing for me. However, I am looking at a way to remove the bearing cups (outer races) from the neck. The shop manual says to use a long drift for the lower. Nothing in my tool chest comes close to fitting in there. I borrowed a tool from the dealer to remove the top cup. We will see tonight if it will work. My questions is: What do you use to remove the lower cup in the steering head tube? RR
