  1. Hmmm, this post was interesting! I've got 13K on my bike and I've just started noticing a leak from the shock, I had put a set of leveling links on the bike a year ago, the other day I just lowered the front and went back to the stock links in the rear, the bike handles like a dream but now I have a leak! I haven't taken the shock off but am wondering after reading several posts if the shocks are re-buildable? That's a bunch of money for a new one, especially when you can buy a set of 4 for your auto for less than that! My bike is a 03 so way out of warranty. Larry M
  2. I was looking to lower the front of my bike, checked in the tech forum and found an older post that Freebird and 2Mike2 had posted back in 06, I would like to make a couple of helpful notes: After you have the fairing off be sure you have a good pad on the tank or you will make a couple of dimples as I did! They both mention this, after you have the Triple Tree removed, the top fork covers off and after loosening the 4 Allen screws take a crescent wrench and turn the upper fork tube at the air valve stem to about 9:00, or you will have to loosen and re-due everything as I did after I got the Triple Tree re-installed! I lowered my forks 1 1/8" and it made the valve stem too close to the handlebars to get a air hose on! I had put the Leveling Links on a year ago, it did help in the handling but I have a 29" inseam and was getting harder to handle in the parking lots and at some of the stops, I took the links off and re-installed the factory links, I also had Rick Butler do my seat, I'm now down to a 27" seat height, I put 10# of air in the back and 0# in the front, that would depend on your PP. I took a 250 mile ride yesterday, a lot of up and down and twisty corners, what a difference! The bike seems so much better balanced it's like night and day to me! Another quick note if you have a light bar be sure and be careful getting that back on, it's very easy to strip the threads, I had to re-tap mine!! Be sure and have lots of tools and a good memory. 3. This is the problem, it seems like any time tires come up there is very little said about White Wall tires! Everyone has an opinion on tires in general. I'm very happy with the Metzlers on my V Star but the rear tire is wider by abut a half inch than the rear tire on my RSV, some say it will work fine and others say it won't! I'm just looking for a good tire in a WW that will fit my RSV! There are a few mfg that still make a fit for the RSV and I would like someone that has them on their RSV to maybe add what they have put on their RSV and what they think of them by now... Have a great day, Larry M
  4. Ok, I know this subject has probably been wore out but maybe after a few miles on their WW tires someone might chime in and lend us that are in the market for White Wall tires some help? I've got a RSV, 03 and have the Avon Venom tires on now but will be looking to replace this spring for the new riding season, any help on a size, make and recommendation will be greatly appreciated! Not all mfg are making their tires in the White Walls. I have the Metzler WW on my V Star and am thinking about ordering the same tire and size for my RSV??? Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this tire subject again, Larry M:fiddle:
  5. Sorry, I didn't mean to get into a P------Contest, to each his own, I've had Digital cameras ever sense they come out, I think I'm on my 6th one! Your evidently the pro! I was just giving my opinion on a very good quality camera for the price and as far as I'm concerned you can't beat the Leica optics and what you pay for in this camera! And I guess I'm a three legged rock because with the stabilizer features I do get some very good scenic pictures! I didn't say 30X, I said 12X Optical! I'm sure Dingy will be happy with his new camera and he probably won't only be taking "touring pictures" with it... Larry M
  6. Well evidently you've not done much scenery filming! It takes at least 3X in a camera to see what the human eye sees! I have the 12X Zoom and sometimes would like to be able to zoom even more, and, that IS Optical Zoom! The camera also has the Digital zoom of 48X but you loose quality with the Digital. When taking pictures of animals at a pretty far distance or anything else for that matter it's nice to be able to bring them in closer. And I do know the difference between Optical and Digital Zoom! Larry M
  7. I forgot to add that the Panasonic uses the Leica lens and also will focus auto while zooming! I think the 12X zoom feature is far more useful than big megapixels! Also, in the reviews the DMC-ZS3 has a better rating than the Cannon because of some of the features. I think they have a newer version out at Costco now, The DMC-ZS6 that will zoom to 18X optical in the Intelligent Auto Mode..These are great cameras and will fit in your shirt pocket! Larry M
  8. Go to Costco and get one of the Panasonic Lumix ZS6 cameras, you will never regret the HD quality of the Video and the Great Zoom features! The quality is amazing and the 12X Optical Zoom is amazing! I think their on special for $249 and worth the extra cost you want to spend! Larry M
  9. I have the Utopia backrests on both my VStar and RSV, and, I had the same thing you have on my '86 1st Gen so know what your talking about! You probably won't want to take the Utopia off once you have it on because you will be able to just pull it forward for loading and unloading, great backrest! Larry M
  10. Thanks Sylvester and Pegscraper, this is what I'm talking about confusing! One says no and the other says it's ok??? Guess when I do order tires I'll try and stick with the stock WWW size... I've also got a VStar 1100 and have the Metzler 170X80X15 WWW's on it and just measured the tires, the 170 is a half inch wider than the 150 Avon I have on the RSV, it looks to me like it will be a pretty tight fit with the 170 on the RSV! Even though I have a dealer here that says it will be ok I think I'll stick with the stock size. Thanks for your feedback, Larry M
  11. I'm about in the market for new tires and want to put the WWW tires on the next time I change, I've read where several people say different likes and dislikes about tires so it's kind of confusing just which tire to get or what not to do! I've made and installed Leveling Links on my ride, RSV, and it did seem to make a great difference in the slow speed handling, however some say NOT to put a smaller tire 130X90X16 on the front if you have the links installed??? Also, Not to put a 170X80X15 on the back as it's too wide, others say it will work fine!? I wish someone in the know would comment on this, I can get Metzler 130X90X16 WWW for the front and 170X80X15 for the rear in a WWW. I also see Conti and Dunlap still make WWW that will fit. The cleaning part don't bother me, guess I'm old fashioned I LIKE the WWW tire look! Larry M
  12. And I just made a pair this morning as per Freeebirds instructions! The links were easy to make if you have the right tools! The only problem I had was getting the top link bolt loose! I didn't put the bike on my rack as it looked like I could do it just on the jack, the nuts are pretty thin and getting enough leverage to get them loose was a bit of a chore but with a little help from my wife in steadying the bike was able to get them loose and off. I just went for a short ride and could tell a big difference in slow speed handling right away, feels like I'm setting a little higher but still have no problem sitting flat footed and I've only a 30" inseam. Thanks Freebird for the great post and illustrations! Larry M
  13. Ok, I know there has been a big bunch of thoughts on TIRES, so, my question is, I've got a V Star 1100 Silverado that I've put Metzler 880 WWW 130X90X16 on the front and 170X90X15 on the rear, I would like to know if anyone has used that combination on their RSV? I'm told at the local dealer that the 170 would fit on the rear! It seams to be about 5/8" wider than the 150X90X15 that's on it. I want to put WWW tires on my RSV but am having trouble finding a fit in a good tire, I've got Avon's on it now and am about due for a new set of tires. Thanks everyone for all your thoughts and experance's. Larry M
  14. I've got a Utopia rest on both my V Star and RSV I've installed both of them and it's not difficult! Very comfortable/adjustable. I personally wouldn't be without a backrest! Probably cheaper and as good as any of the rests mentioned... ww.utpr.com Larry M
  15. Wow, after reading the posts on this article I'm wondering if anyone else feels the same? First, I bought a Morgan Carbtune late last fall because of the feed back on them and others, I haven't used it yet and almost afraid to because of the feedback! It seems there are so many biased opinions on tires, windshields, carbtunes, oil and many other items that a person don't know what the hell to go with! I realize feedback is good but can get confusing at times!? That's just MOPO... Larry M

    ATV 4x4

I'm only responding to this because I find it interesting reading the reader response to what they think is the best ATV! I've had ATV's sense Honda come out with the Big Red, owned several Hondas and ridden several thousand miles in the mountains and back roads with all makes and models and can tell you their all good, some have features that others don't. I also plow LOTS of snow and have used a 4-wheeler for years doing this, I have a Yamaha Grizzley 700 with a winch, power steering and 5' blade, I've chosen the Yamaha because they have, for several years, 2 wheel/4 wheel and a 4 wheel differential lock, Polaris now has come out with the differential lock on their machines. I think all the machines are good if one gets them setup right for plowing snow and use some common sense! I've never had to use chains and we get lots of snow conditions here in the Pacific Northwest! Just plow a little more offen when it's wet/heavy and coming down! Good luck in deciding what machine to buy, if you have a good local dealer stick with them! Larry M
  17. Hmm, this has been a interesting post! Sounds like you've had lots of experience tX2sturgis, with all of your experience and different rides does the rake kit help that much in cornering? I live out here in the Pacific Northwest, rural Idaho and Washington and have lots of secondary back roads with lots of corners and steep grades and your telling us that a skilled trike rider can outcorner the average 2 wheel rider? Not doubting your skills but would have to see that! the only trike I've ridden, for a short distance, was my friends new Harley trike and it wasn't easy to steer at all! Will be looking forward to going to Kamloops, BC this spring to check out the Hannigan and hopefully they will have one to do a demo ride on?? Great Post! Larry M
  18. Wow, what a great article! I've got a VStar Silverado and a RSV -03, I also was being tortured after 250-300 miles on the VStar so looked and found a great deal on a like new RSV. The RSV is so nice! I had a 1986 years ago and loved that bike, should have never sold it. Anyway I also have been looking and asking lots of questions on the conversions, I have a friend from Montana I ride with that just got a new Harley Trike this summer, $33K, it looks nice but is rough riding and hard to steer in the corners, really has to be heads up as he also has a Road King that he kept and rides and has to remember what he's on! I also was thinking about a Wing only because of the reverse but after seeing REDRIDER52's conversion and reading some of the coments I will probably make a trip to Kamloops, BC and check on the Hannigan conversion, it's only a day ride from my home. Hopefully I will be able to ride both the RSV and Wing conversions before I decide. Good luck and thanks for posting the article, let us all know what you've decided, Larry M
  19. Thanks for posting that Mark, haven't been a member that long, maybe in the spring I'll look up some members in my area, the riding weather here in our area is from the looks of things about done for this season! and SNOW. Larry M
  20. I just bought one just like this at Harbor Freight last Thursday for $3.99, perfect for the shock adjustment..
  21. I just wanted to say a big thank you to Rick Butler for the seat he altered for me! I got the seat back yesterday and went for a 175 mile ride today and I'm tellin ya there is no comparison to the stock Pillow Top seat I had and the altered seat! Anyone thinking about a Corbin or other big buck seat should spend a few bucks and try this first, I doubt they will spend the big bucks for another seat! Larry M
  22. Yup, I'll go along with the Clearview vote, I've got the Medium Vented and love it, far less buffeting than the stock RSV shield!! A little more than some but worth it. Larry M
  23. I would go with the Attorney General first before contacting a lawyer, I've done that twice, contacted the Attorney General and you would be surprised how fast the other party come around! And, it's FREE! That's what their there for! Our taxes pay for them! Larry M
  24. 1972, I have a 72, 175 and a 72 SL70! Larry M
  25. I'm sorry if this is a old subject but after a lot of looking around on the site I've not seen a thing about Back Braces, I'm sure I'm not the only rider out there that has a lower back ache after a few hours in the saddle?? I have a VStar 1100 Silverado that I put a Ortho Gell Pad in the seat and it did help a little but still after a few hours and a couple of days later my lower back ached terrible! I purchaced a 03 RSV a few months ago and it is a lot more comfortable than the VStar!! I've been looking and sent Rick Butler a personal message asking about making my present seat more comfortable, I've also been checking out the lower back braces, the KoolBak Motorcycle brace has some pretty good reviews. I'm sure that some of you guys/gals have a suggestion or opinion?? I had a 86 Venture about 20 years ago and I didn't seem to have the problem then, but, I'm 20 years older!!:shock3:thanks in advance for any ideas.. Larry M
