  1. Sometimes my battery guage is just barely over 12 (with engine running) and other times its around 14-15. Not sure is this is an early sign of a stator going bad or something else.....any ideas?
  2. Yes, it fits into a brass bracket as shown in the pic....(I used a little loctite on that end of the tube..) You adjust the other end to take freeplay out of the cable
  3. ...If you ordered a new cable then it comes with that 90 deg metal tube that the cable runs through...one end of that tube goes into a holder on the carb and the other end has an adjustment that when turned out will lengthen thereby taking freeplay out of the cable.... Bad pic of metal tube but you can see where the adjustment is on the end..
  4. I just replaced #3 cable about a year ago and I agree its a major PITA to replace.....About the freeplay..the cable runs through a 90 deg metal tube..one end of that tube has an adjustment that you screw out to lengthen the tube thus taking freeplay out of the cable..(it takes a 10mm open end wrench to adjust..)
  5. I have used Castrol GTX 20/50 in my motorcycles for the last 20 years...I add about 1/3 of a can of STP every time I change oil which is at 2000 mi....I have NEVER had engine or transmission oil related problems...I'm convinced the tranny shifts smoother with the STP in the oil then without....
  6. Yep, nothing will tighten your sphincter more than being miles from home, hitting the start button and nothing happens....Been there..you almost feel relieved when you realize it was "only" the kill switch....
  7. I believe a 1 1/8" socket will work.....
  8. My fork brace went right in with a little coaxing from a rubber mallet...I did use a little WD-40 in the bolt holes and along the edges of he brace but all and all it went in rather easy....
  9. OOPS....I mistakenly gave wrong advice on how to fill the final drive...I was thinking of my BMW that has three caps..DUH
  10. Doesn't your class system work?
  11. Same here...I'm 6'4" and I look just over the top of the windshield..I like it that way. Its a little noiseier but Looking through a wet or bug splattered windshield doesn't appeal to me.....
  12. You're a good man DT...I think we all wish that if we have a problem with our bike that someone like you comes along....
  13. I've had the same radar detector on my bike for the last 12 years.....Its saved me at least 25-30 tickets... Here in Nevada they're legal....but so is prostitution......
  14. Not sure about an 83 but on my 86VR there are three caps..one to empty and one to fill the final drive..there also is a 3rd cap in the middle (smaller than the other two)...I empty the final drive oil, cap the bottom and then fill it until oil comes out that midway cap then cap that one and the top filler cap......you're done
  15. Pappa bear......did you get my reply regarding using stop leak on the fork seals? If not let me know and I'll email you directly..

  16. I stopped my fork seal from leaking by lifting up the dust cover and putting a bead of LUCAS POWER STEERING STOP LEAK over the seal then putting the dust cover back in place..it may take a couple of applications and a day or two to set in but it stopped the leak..its been 4 months now, no leak...another guy I know added 2 oz of stop leak to his fork oil and it too stopped the leak...
  17. A shot in the dark.....a few years ago a friend of mine had similiar problems as you described....wound up he accidently put diesel fuel in his bike...
  18. Yes, and 4 screws hold the top cover in place..take off that cover and pull the air filter out and check it.... Also, we try to help each other so don't feel that any question you ask is a stupid question.....it takes a while to learn where things are at...
  19. I'd try running a can or two of sea foam through the fuel system first....
  20. Did you make sure you put the rubber caps back on the ports? If its running rich could be the choke or a dirty air filter....
  21. Replacing plugs is a good start but getting only 30mpg says its more than plugs..Your gas mileage should be up around 40mpg..Out of curiousity.... did you check your air filter?
  22. As long as the connectors are correct then any fuel filter should work...I've used several different ones over the years....I change my fuel filter when I change my rear tire..
  23. I use an air cushion that works great...On long trips I may have leg, shoulder, neck etc aches but my (_!_) remains unscathed.....
  24. I would fill both resevoirs just to make sure...Over the years I've had situations where I thought one or the other resevoir was full when it wasn't.. Also, when you have the front resevoir cap off move the float up and down a couple of times to make sure its working..
  25. I had the same problem on my 86VR....Pulsing when I used the foot pedal..I wasn't sure if it was the rear or Lt front rotor..Several members plus a couple of parts people told me that a vast majority wound up being the rear rotor..Bottom line is they were right..it was the rear rotor
